Does it make sense to take pride in one's intellect, fitness, or wealth? Our Sages teach us that those things are determined before someone is born, and therefore it would be ludicrous for us to take pride in what was given to us by God. But in a seminal teaching, Ben Zoma reveals that there […]

Judaism gives us the tools to hold both joy and pain simultaneously. Few understand this better than Rabba Yaffa Epstein, The Jewish Education Project's Senior Scholar and Educator in Residence, who tragically lost her nephew, Yakir Hexter z”l, while fighting in Gaza one year ago.  Yakir was much more than a soldier—he was a brilliant Torah student, a talented artist, an athlete, and a bartender with his own signature cocktail. In this week's episode of Adapting, Rabba Yaffa shares Torah in Yakir's memory, drawing wisdom from Ben Zoma in Pirkei Avot and from Yakir himself, emphasizing the responsibility we all have as spectators to step in and make a difference. Rabba Yaffa juxtaposes her grief with welcoming a beautiful baby girl named in Yakir's honor within the same week, reminding us that we can find light and inspiration even in the darkest of times. This episode was produced by Dina Nusnbaum and Miranda Lapides. The show's executive producers are David Bryfman, Karen Cummins, and Nessa Liben. This episode was engineered and edited by Nathan J. Vaughan of NJV Media. If you enjoyed the show, please leave us a 5-star rating and review, or even better, share it with a friend. NA'ALEH YOGA: Yoga Nidra Journeys for Deep Rest+ By Ruthie Ayzenberg   Close Your Eyes and Open Your Mind   Sometimes we get preoccupied with what we don't have and forget to give thanks for all the blessings we do have.  The Jewish sage Ben Zoma says: "Who is wealthy? He who is happy with his portion." (Pirkei Avot 3:5).  This meditative practice is all about finding gratitude within and appreciating the goodness that is found in every corner of daily life, especially the little things we often take for granted. From the beautiful & bountiful world around us to the intricate world within, there is so much that is going right in every moment and so much to be grateful for!  So, whether you're filled with gratitude already or feeling kind of down and need something to lift your spirits, this episode is for you. From my heart to yours...      Optional post-practice integration ideas: * Make a list of at least 10 specific things you are grateful for today. * Share with someone how much you appreciate them. Be specific.  * Choose an ordinary object that makes your life better (for example keys) and learn about its story.  *Look for fortunate coincidences (hashgacha pratis)  as you go throughout your day

In this week's episode of Ḥoni's Circle, we study a section of Maasechet Brachot where Ben Zoma enumerates all the steps that lead to a loaf of bread or a piece of clothing. We discuss how, implicit in this text, is a sense of gratitude for the entire community of artisans active in the process of providing our daily needs, and relate this to climate change by acknowledging that we need a community to provide for everyone and work for a livable world, but also that we should keep in mind our own work as fitting into the work that the entire community is doing to fight climate change. Such a rich daf! First, the story of "Pardes," the four who entered the Pardes and came out with very different reactions (Ben Azzai, Ben Zoma, Elisha ben Avuyah, and R. Akiva). What happened to them is helpful, and perhaps essential, to understanding how people function in the world, when they confront that which is difficult, or metaphysically challenging, and the like. Also, Elisha ben Avuyah's conduct as Acher (Other), the apostate whom R. Meir still regarded as his teacher. And what that means for both R. Meir and Acher himself.

The Jewish definition of strength has nothing to do with bench presses or push ups...though those might help someone get into shape, or at least develop some seriously bulging musculature! (Not that I, Rabbi E, would know...talk to me about treadmills, not barbells.) In Jewish ethical thought, "strength" is defined as the ability to control or check our potentially destructive and damaging impulses, desires, passions. "Ben Zoma says: "Who is strong? One who can subdue an impulse." [Pirkei Avos: 4, 1] It's a hard job, and one to keep us busy our whole lives, that's for sure. But someone--or rather, every single one of us--has to try to do it. So my friends (and, yes, myself): BE STRONG, and let's exercise that muscle of self-control!

Closing the debate between Ben Zoma and R. Yehudah, not wholly satisfactorily. The washing sanctification and the immersing was all done in a holy chamber near the kohen's chamber -- except for the first immersion of the day, which took place outside, in the water that arrived to the Temple via an aqueduct higher than the courtyard of the Temple. Also, a new mishnah! Continuing with the procedures of the day. Beginning with the kohen gadol's wardrobe change, more washing, and the Korban Tamid of the morning, shared with another kohen/other kohanim. Plus a Korban Minchah, more with blood, and the incense of the morning... and afternoon. [What's What: Istanis (again)] They would adjust the temperature of the mikveh, if the kohen gadol was sensitive to the temperature. The Gemara here responds to his human need.

A new mishnah focused in the kohen's washing of hands and feet, and immersing in the mikveh (10 and 5 times, respectively). With measures in place to preserve his modesty, of course. Which brings us to a dispute between Ben Zoma and R. Yehudah, with regard to how close to a risk of incurring later this washing avoids. What are they actually disagreeing about? Whether the washing (or lack thereof) invalidates the service itself. And how it increases the kedushah of his activity. Plus a distinction made between the first dunking and washing of the day, though the mishnah (and Ben Zoma and R. Yehudah) do not make that distinction explicit.

Study Guide Yoma 30 Pictures In the Temple, one who urinates, needs to wash his hands and feet. Why? One cannot read Shema if one has excrement on one’s body in its place. The gemara tries to understand this halakha as the Torah was not given to the angels! If one leaves a meal to go to the bathroom or to talk to a friend outside for a long period of time, does one need to wash again upon returning to the meal? If so, does one need to do it in front of everyone so that they don’t suspect him of not washing? On what does this depend? One needs to go to the mikveh before entering the azara of the Temple. On Yom Kippur, the Kohen Gadol would dip in the mikveh five times and would wash his hands and feet ten times. Four of the five dippings were done in the azara in the Beit HaParva, but the first was done outside, above the water gate. Why does one need to go to the mikveh before going into the azara? Ben Zoma and Rabbi Yehuda debate this issue and whether it is by Torah law or rabbinic. What is the practical difference between their opinions? Rabbi Yehuda says in another braita that the leper doesn’t need to go to the mikveh on the 8th day of his purification process as he has gone the evening before. How does his opinion here fit with his opinion in his debate with Ben Zoma? From those who disagree with Rabbi Yehuda in the latter braita, it becomes clear that there is a third approach that only a leper needs to go to the mikveh before entering the azara. Why?

1.When Bavel will be destroyed, wild animals will come and harm its neighbors as well. When Shomron was destroyed, its neighbors were blessed, bc Shmoron become a place for planting fertile vineyards. 2. When someone sees large group of Jew (600,000) in Israel theres bracha that recited "the Sage of Secrets"- bracha is depicting how different each person is. 3. Ben Zoma noted how the difference in attitude between a gracious guest who gives proper gratitude to the host and a selfish guest who gives no gratitude to his host. 4. Special bracha for Talmidei Chacahim and for non Jewish sages. Special bracha for Jewish and non Jewish Kings. 5. Rav SHeshes was blind but was still able to predict when the King would come bc the King comes after the silent still sound just like the Pasuk describes with Hashem. 6. Rav Shila had a story where gave lashes to someone who slept with a non Jewish woman. The person slandered him for giving punishment without authority. Eliyahu Hanvai came and helped testify that the story was the man had slept with a donkey. The royal palace wanted to kill the man until Rav SHilla explained how merciful God is and hinted that we should mirror God and have mercy as well. 7. Special brach for Jewish homes in their inhabited state or in their destruction. Same for non Jewish homes- a bracha is recited for them. Rav Chana's home was known especially for its amazing hospitality. There is a comfort for these homes being destroyed that our homes are linked to the Beis Hamikdash, and as long as Hashem's house in in ruins, ours are no better. 8. Special bracha for graves. Special bracha for seeing friend after 30 days (shehechyanu) and after 12 months (m'chaye meisim) It takes 12 months to forget about a dead person. 9. Spotted people, black skinned, red skin, white skin, obese people, dwarfs, or person with warts, we say "Meshane briyos." Amputated person, blind, person with very dense hair, person with boils we say "dayan ha'emes." It depends whether the person was born with the defect (meshane briyos) or it developed later (dayan ha'emes) 10. On Zikin, we say "Hashme's strength fills the world." ZIkin is comet star. WE have tradition that this star doesn't pass through Kesil (name of constellation) and if it would it would destroy the world. Zikin may also be when the light of "rakiya" shines though "violin"-the bottom layer of the sky. 11. Theres two constellations- Kimah and Kesil. They balance each other as Kesil is hot and Kima is cold.

At the beginning of the Seder, we recall the story of five Talmudic sages who passed an entire night discussing the Exodus from Egypt, after which they needed to be reminded that dawn had broken so that they would recite the Shema. One of the five, Rabbi Eleazar ben Azarya, remarked that he had never known about the obligation to mention the Exodus each night until he heard an interpretation from a man called Ben Zoma, who derived it from an extra word in the verse. But the rabbis offer a dissenting view, appearing to disagree with Ben Zoma’s interpretation, and they offer an interpretation of their own that predicts a requirement to discuss the Exodus from Egypt even after the final redemption, in the era of Messiah. There are numerous reasons why the inclusion of this passage -- which originates in a mishnah in tractate Berachot -- is puzzling. The subject under discussion in that mishnah is whether or not one needs to say the third paragraph of Shema, and has nothing whatsoever to do with the retelling of the Exodus story on Passover night. Why bring up this irrelevant halachic debate in the Haggadah? And even if the nighttime reference is relevant to the story of the rabbis who stayed up all night, why mention the dissenting view of those who disagree with Ben Zoma? And what exactly is the meaning of the rabbis view that the Exodus story will retain its importance, even after Messianic redemption? Rabbi Dunner addresses these and other questions, and also includes a detailed look at the mysterious Ben Zoma, whose unusual personality and great scholarship are crucial to gaining an understanding of this curious passage of the Seder night Haggadah.

“Listen Better than you Talk” is a mini podcast that seeks to extrapolate the value behind improving one’s listening and attentiveness skills. In this podcast, I explore the various facets within which good communication and DIALOG (not dialect!) lies. It is my hope that with some of the simple principles shared here, you too will be able to improve your listening and communication abilities. Some quotes pertaining to this piece: “Raise your words, not voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder” – Rumi “When one responds to verbal attack, the result is worse verbal attack” – Rav Shalom Arush – I THINK… “Speech without thought is like a body without a soul” – Rav Lazer Brody “A person who speaks without thinking utters empty words, and empty words don’t have the power to cast a lasting impression on the listener’s heart” – Rav lazer Brody Ethics of our fathers: Chapter 1: 17. His son, Shimon, would say: All my life I have been raised among the wise, and I have found nothing better for the body than silence… Chapter 4: 1. Ben Zoma would say: Who is wise? One who learns from every man. As is stated (Psalms 119:99): “From all my teachers I have grown wise, for Your testimonials are my meditation.” Chapter 5: 7. There are seven things that characterize a boor, and seven that characterize a wise man. A wise man does not speak before one who is greater than him in wisdom or age. He does not interrupt his fellow’s words. He does not hasten to answer. His questions are on the subject and his answers to the point. He responds to first things first and to latter things later. Concerning what he did not hear, he says “I did not hear.” He concedes to the truth. With the boor, the reverse of all these is the case. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/faithisstrength/support

Rabbi Elazar ben Azaryah said: "Behold, I am like a seventy-year-old man, yet I could not win [the argument against the other sages] having the exodus from Egypt recited at night, until Ben Zoma derived it [from a Biblical source]." "[He derived it as follows:] It says (Deut. 16:3), 'In order that you may remember the day when you left Egypt for all the days of your life.'" "Now, 'days of your life' means the days; 'All the days of your life' [includes also] the nights." But the Sages say: "Days of your life" means the present world; "All the days of your life" includes also the era of Mashiach.
