Burned, Amputated, Isolated — Now Marc Fucarile is Leading a Disability Revolution

@marcfucarile @marcnetworkincA chance encounter at the Chicago Abilities Expo led to one of our most powerful conversations yet. Marc Fugarile, a Boston Marathon bombing survivor, shares his journey from the devastating moment when the second bomb detonated just feet away from him – instantly amputating his right leg, setting him ablaze, and leaving him fighting for his life. With remarkable candor, Marc reveals the profound isolation he felt during recovery, describing how it took three and a half years to find the appropriate prosthetic socket for his needs. "I missed three and a half years of my son's life because I wasn't able to be standing up," he explains, his voice carrying both grief and determination. This frustrating experience sparked the creation of the MARC Network (Mobility Awareness Resource Community) – a free mobile app connecting people with disabilities, their families, and service providers in one digital space. What truly distinguishes Marc's vision is his recognition of untapped power within the disability community. "We are a community made up of 60 million people that control a trillion dollars in spend every year," he emphasizes. Yet this immense potential remains fragmented by systems that divide people by specific conditions, diminishing their collective voice. Mark passionately argues for unity, noting how the disability community consistently bears the brunt of economic downturns and policy decisions made by those unaffected by the consequences. The MARC Network represents more than just technological innovation – it's a movement to reclaim agency and create sustainable support systems. As Mark explains his public benefit corporation model that channels resources back into community needs, we glimpse what's possible when tragedy transforms into purpose. This speedcast episode may be shorter than our usual format, but its impact will stay with you long after listening. Police Sergeant Shot Multiple Times, Left Paralyzed And Leg Amputated. On November 11, 2016, Boise Police Sergeant Kevin Holtry's life changed forever. What began as a tactical search for a dangerous fugitive in a quiet Boise neighborhood turned into a brutal ambush that would leave Holtry shot multiple times, paralyzed from the waist down, and ultimately result in the amputation of his left leg. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on our website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. The suspect, a violent parolee wanted for multiple shootings and a carjacking, had been released early from prison. After eluding officers in a stolen vehicle, he was believed to be hiding somewhere in a residential area. Sergeant Holtry, a member of the Boise Police Department's Special Operations Unit, joined the search along with fellow Sergeant Chris Davis. Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Medium and most all social media platforms “He knew the risk,” said a department spokesperson. “But Kevin always put others before himself. That's the kind of officer he was.” As the team cleared backyards, Holtry took the lead position, a role both he and Davis understood carried the highest danger. As they entered one yard, the fugitive, armed and crouched behind trash receptacles, opened fire. Look for supporting stories about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Newsbreak and Blogspot. Police Sergeant Shot Multiple Times, Left Paralyzed And Leg Amputated. Holtry was shot five times in the attack. One bullet instantly paralyzed him. Davis was also shot but survived. Officers returned fire, killing the suspect on scene. The team's K9 partner, Jardo, sustained fatal injuries in the firefight. “I was hit immediately,” Holtry later recalled in a podcast interview. “I couldn't move. I knew it was bad. I couldn't feel anything.” The attack marked a turning point in Holtry's life. After more than 16 surgeries, he remained paralyzed and lost his left leg. Despite the devastating injuries, Holtry continued to serve the Boise Police Department for several more years, becoming a symbol of resilience, service, and courage. Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms. In recognition of his heroism and continued dedication, Holtry was awarded the Medal of Honor, one of the department's highest honors. His journey has since become a beacon of inspiration in the law enforcement community and beyond. “Kevin exemplifies what it means to serve with honor,” said a Boise PD official. “He never gave up, not in the fight, not during recovery, and not when it came to helping others heal.” Holtry's story is featured on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast available as a free podcast on their website, available on Apple, Spotify, and most major platforms. In his episode, he shares raw details about the ambush, the intense physical and emotional recovery, and how he found purpose againthis time, through mentoring, sports, and public speaking. Police Sergeant Shot Multiple Times, Left Paralyzed And Leg Amputated. Outside of uniform, Holtry discovered a new way to find that same adrenaline rush through adaptive athletics. With support from the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF), he competed in the 2019 San Diego Triathlon Challenge and participated in Nordic skiing, sledge hockey, and other sports that brought him joy and healing. The interview is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast website, also available on platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and most major podcast outlets. “Sports saved me,” Holtry said. “Being active again gave me back a part of myself I thought was lost.” Holtry, who served three years in the U.S. Army and spent more than 20 years in law enforcement, mostly with Boise Police, had once left a career path in education to become an officer. Though he had a degree in English literature and a potential future in the classroom, he chose the streets instead. Check out the show on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms. “I wanted to serve,” he told a citizen's academy class, according to a Boise PD Facebook post. “That's what I was meant to do.” Even after his injuries, that service never stopped. Holtry continued to teach self-defense classes, mentor young officers, and speak to the community about the realities and rewards of police work. His story has been shared widely on Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn, and in local and national news. Police Sergeant Shot Multiple Times, Left Paralyzed And Leg Amputated. “Just someone saying, ‘We appreciate your effort' that means the world,” Holtry said in one interview. “I'm a public servant. That's what we do. If you don't find a high in that, you're not human.” Despite the physical challenges, including bullet fragments still lodged in his body and a steel rod holding his right leg together, Holtry never allowed bitterness to take root. “I don't hate what happened,” he said. “It gave me a second chance to impact lives differently.” Today, with the help of a GRIT Freedom Chair provided through a grant from CAF Idaho, Holtry explores Idaho's outdoors, still healing, still teaching, still inspiring. His message is one of resilience, purpose, and pushing through the unimaginable. For more insights, the free episode of the “Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast”, is available on their website for free in addition to Apple Podcasts and Spotify, as well as through other podcast platforms. White water rafting has gone very wrong for a Lithuanian man in the fast-flowing Franklin River in Tasmania over the weekend. After accidentally wedging his leg between rocks, the man was trapped for over 20 hours, partially submerged in the river, while rescuers attempted to release him, staving off hypothermia with hot meals and warm drinks in thermoses. Eventually they concluded the only way to get him out was to amputate the man's leg at the knee.    How does something like this happen? If you're thinking of doing any adventure sporting over the summer or on your next holiday, should you think twice if considering white-water rafting? On this episode of The Briefing, Bension Siebert speaks with Bruce Baxter, owner and founder of Paddle Sports Australia and author or The Ever Varying Flood: Franklin River Rafting Guide to unpack what he thinks went wrong.  Follow The Briefing:TikTok: @listnrnewsroomInstagram: @listnrnewsroom @thebriefingpodcast YouTube: @LiSTNRnewsroomFacebook: @LiSTNR NewsroomSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Investigations are now underway after a driver was killed in a serious crash which closed a busy route in both directions. The black vehicle was travelling on the coastbound carriageway of the A2 in the early ours of this morning when it collided with a central barrier and a bridge parapet. Also in today's podcast, a police sergeant who stripped naked and masturbated near a play park in Chatham has been sacked. The 51-year-old admitted taking pictures of himself performing the indecent act after he “crawled” into a wooded area.A violent thug who punched his mum and ex-girlfriend has admitted his behaviour was “disgraceful”.The unemployed 24-year-old was drunk at the time of the attack in Dover and when he woke up in a police cell claimed he could not remember what he had done.A Dartford man who thought he just need a bit of a rest has had his arms and legs amputated and part of his nose has been eaten away after he developed sepsis. The father of three took a few days off work and could never could have imagined that four months later he would have lost all his limbs and be waiting for surgery to rebuild his face. And you can hear from residents who have welcomed the proposed overhaul of a leisure centre – but say while upgrades are needed it will be a shame to see the loss of the “fun bits”.The renovation of Tides Leisure Centre in Deal comes with lots of new inclusions, but would also mean the loss of the existing wave pool, flume, smaller slides and sauna room.

"I want my legs back," the girl cried in Arabic. "I want my legs back." You can't have your legs back, little girl. They have been eaten by a hungry machine who needs them for fuel to power its gears. The machine needs your legs to keep the sky raining bombs and to make its death robots fly. Your legs power the bulldozers digging mass graves and the tanks blowing holes in the hospitals. A glorious kingdom is held together by the amputated limbs of children. A pentagon-shaped castle is built from the bones of the amputated limbs of children. Wall Street werewolves and bank boys dine on the amputated limbs of children. Movie stars treat their wrinkles with creams made from the amputated limbs of children. Suburban families prop up their smiles with the amputated limbs of children. The news man lies and in his eyes you see the amputated limbs of children. The podium man smirks and between his teeth are the amputated limbs of children. And the little girl cries, and the news man ignores her, and the podium man smirks at her, and the bank boy bites her, and the machine rolls on, limbs fed into its furnace with pitchforks, crushing houses and blackening the sky, poisoning the oceans and bloodying the earth, while the air fills with the crying of children, for limbs that will never come back, for homes that will never come back, for mothers that will never come back, for childhoods that will never come back, for brightness that will never come back, for innocence that will never come back, for dreams that will never come back, for joy that will never come back. And we are here, eating cheesy meatcarbs and watching funny haw-haws and gossiping and prattling and wishing we looked better and trying not to think about all the tiny arms and legs we see covering the earth whenever we step outside. Reading by Tim Foley.

Today I sit down with Lindsey Roy. I was introduced to her through a mutual connection who thought she would be a great fit to be on the podcast. After some research, I was blown away by her story and was so grateful when she agreed to come on the show.  10 years ago, Lindsey was in a serious boating accident, which lead to an amputation. Then just 10 months ago, she underwent a double lung transplant. Not only has she kept a positive outlook during these trials, but she has continued to win at work, and at home. She is a successful business leader with Hallmark, a wife for 15 years, and a mother to 2 kids. Her story is one of resilience and faith that I think all of us could learn and be encouraged by.   In this episode, you'll discover…  What is the key trait to winning at work and at home? (2:08) Lindsey opens up about her accident. (5:23) How did God show himself during her trauma? 9:17) Lindsey's double lung transplant (15:42) Communication. Express your needs. (26:52) You can't feel grateful and fearful at the same time. (35:24)   Lindsey's Bio: A tragic boating accident while on vacation almost claimed Lindsey¹s life and left her with an amputated left leg, severely injured right leg, and injured right arm. Through a challenging recovery process, Lindsey learned impactful lessons on how to harness disruption and find clarity in the chaos. A fresh voice on the speaking circuit, Lindsey has been heralded for her authentic style and universal message. Lindsey has spent over eighteen years in the corporate environment, leading teams in innovation, digital development, and product merchandising. She was named Vice-President at Hallmark Cards at just thirty-two years old, one of the youngest VPs ever in a company with over a 100-year history, and in the top 1% of brands worldwide. Lindsey combines her unique life experience, corporate background, and emotional intelligence to truly connect with audiences.   What's Next?  Have you read Rise and Go?! "Hey, don't shoot, I understand what's going on, don't shoot. We can work this out."Just after midnight on 19 October 1985, Douglas Cleaves was relaxing with his sister and two of his friends at his home in Anchorage, Alaska. The four had eaten dinner earlier that evening and were watching "Fame" when they heard a couple of loud knocks at the front door. Doug's sister, Susan, got up to get it. Standing at the door was a masked figure wearing a balaclava, combat gloves, and a tan-colored trench coat, who was holding what looked like a bolt-action hunting rifle. This unknown individual stormed inside and shot Doug five times, ignoring the man's pleas as he lay helpless on the ground, having lost his legs in a terrible accident just a few months prior...Special thanks to Susan Ludwig, Doug's sister, who has championed her brother's story for several years now.
