Two Shost Podcast Ep.137 - What are the Spurs chances of getting a top pick in the NBA draft after losing the coin toss? On this episode of the Two Shots Podcast, we will be joined by Paul Garcia host of the Spurscast, and Benjamin Bornstein who is a writer for Project Spurs. We will discuss the San Antonio Spurs being approved to play three games away from the AT&T Center and what this means for the team's future here in San Antonio. The Spurs organization looks to expand its brand beyond San Antonio and into Mexico as the city council approved the team to play three games away from the At&t Center for the upcoming 2023-24 season. Paul Garica, Ben Borstein, and I will also talk about Spurs Sports and Entertainment released a timeline for their massive $500 million practice facility that is set to open in August of 2023, with a ribbon cutting ceremony to be held in September. The center will be open to the public in October and the Spurs restaurant that is not expected to open until January 2025. Spurs fans can now rest assured that their team is here to stay in San Antonio and can look forward to having access to a new practice facility. RC Buford, the General Manager of the Spurs, has reassured fans that the team will not be moving to Austin, and has made it clear that the Spurs are committed to its San Antonio home. With the Spurs losing the coin toss to the Houston Rockets the team will now finish with the third-worst record in the NBA but how does this affect the team's chances of landing that number one pick in the upcoming NBA Draft? Well, honestly losing the coin toss was not that big of a deal as both the Spurs, Rockets and Pistons all still have a 14% chance of landing that coveted top pick. The worst the Spurs could do is fall to that 7th spot in the NBA Draft but the odds of that happening are 7%. The Spurs have better odds of getting that 5th spot at 14.8% than landing the 1st overall pick by only a few percentage points. We will discuss the team's percentages in more detail on this episode of the Two Shots Podcast. Did you see the latest Spurs merchandise labeled La Cultura that was made available to the fans this week? It's a blend of the culture of the Alamo City with Aqua Frescas and a bit of the Fiesta theme along with a Spurs Coyote Pinata. From T-Shirts to Caps, this limited edition merchandise is always a fan favorite here in San Antonio. We will discuss the pricing for the La Cultura merchandise as T-Shirts start at $39.99 and Caps at $34.99 are these prices too high? In San Antonio, you can go to the Southside or any local Flea Market and buy a bootleg T-Shirt for about $10.00 - $15.00 that will look just as good if not better. We will discuss this and end the show by talking to Paul about his latest episode of the Spurscast as he Collin Reid will be Breaking Down The Team Salary Going Into The Off Season. Much to the surprise of Spurs fans around Alamo City, we learned early yesterday that Spurs rookie sensation Jeremy Sochan was named to the Jordan Rising Stars along with other players including Paolo Banchero, Jaden Ivey, and Jalen Duren. With such exciting news in what has been a dismal season for Spurs fans, we will discuss what this means for Jeremy Sochan and the team. Joining us on this all-new episode of the Two Shots Podcast will be guests Paul Garcia, Benjamin Bornstein, Wesley Perkins, and Rudy Campos Jr. host of Sweep The League Podcast. What has Jeremy Sochan done over the last seven games with the Spurs? We will take a look at his stats and what the numbers tell us about the overall growth and production of one Jeremy Sochan. We will also be discussing the upcoming NBA draft and which prospects Spurs fans should be keeping an eye on. We will also present the idea that maybe the Spurs should trade down in the draft if they don't get that first or second pick and look to fulfill some needs on the team rather than draft the best available player. We will end the show by giving our Superbowl predictions o which team we believe will win it all. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/twoshotspodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/twoshotspodcast/support
Spurscast: Long-Term Outlook Questions In Spurscast episode 669, Spurscast host Paul Garcia and Project Spurs writer Benjamin Bornstein answer Spurs fan questions about: The best way for the Spurs to end up with the number one overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft How long it can take for the Spurs to be an elite team again Best way to end up with 1st pick The best chance a team can have of trying to land the number one overall pick in the NBA Draft lottery is by finishing with one of the three worst records in the league. Per Tankathon.com, teams who finish 30th, 29th, and 28th have a 14% chance in the lottery of landing the number overall pick. According to their over/under wins by Bovada.lv, the Spurs are projected to finish with one of the three worst records, with an over/under of 23.5 wins for this season. How long can it take for the Spurs to be elite again? Two questions asked about the Spurs getting back to being an elite team again were if the Spurs go with the free agency route or draft route to try to compete again. The free agency route is difficult because though the Spurs are projected to have a lot of cap space, there just aren't All-NBA level players who will be available in free agency next year. The draft route looks like the best option, but that could typically take five to six years, and so many things have to go right. Young players on the current team have to go to another level and the Spurs have to get lucky and draft a really good player with their lottery pick, and then that player has to actually be excellent in the NBA when the games start. Spurscast: Preseason Injuries for Keldon Johnson and Josh Primo In Spurscast episode 668, Spurscast host Paul Garcia and Project Spurs writer Benjamin Bornstein discuss: Josh Primo and Keldon Johnson's injuries, which means they'll both likely miss all of the preseason Josh Richardson saying Devin Vassell is poised to make a leap this season Early season minutes for the rookies Preseason Injuries for Johnson and Primo San Antonio Spurs forward Keldon Johnson will miss the start of the preseason with a dislocated right shoulder he injured in open gym three weeks ago. Johnson is expected to be back for the first game of the regular season. Thursday the Spurs announced Primo will miss the start of the preseason with an MCL sprain. Like Johnson, Primo is expected to be back for the start of the regular season. Vassell to make a big jump this season? In a training camp interview, Josh Richardson said the player he thinks will take a big step this season is Vassell. He said not only is Vassell more vocal on the court, but he's showing more playmaking with the ball in his hands in being able to create for himself and others. Vassell also said driving and trying to get to the free throw line are two parts of his game he worked on in the offseason. Early minutes for the rookies Unlike most seasons where Spurs rookies start in Austin with the G-League Spurs, Jeremy Sochan, Malaki Branham, and Blake Wesley all have a shot to earn a role on the team with the Spurs shifting toward a development-focused season. Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich said only Jakob Poeltl has a guaranteed spot in the starting lineup and he will be testing the young players by giving them minutes earlier than usual. Spurscast: Post-Draft Analysis and Summer League Impressions In Spurscast episode 663, Spurscast host Paul Garcia, Project Spurs writer Benjamin Bornstein, and former Project Spurs writer Trevor Zickgraf discuss: The latest news and notes for the San Antonio Spurs Analysis and Summer League impressions about the Spurs' rookies Jeremy Sochan (out for Summer League), Malaki Branham, Blake Wesley, and Dominic Barlow Latest New and Notes The Spurs officially waived Danilo Gallinari on Friday. The team has also officially signed all three first round pick rookies in Sochan, Branham, and Wesley. The Spurs can still open the most cap space in the league, though they haven't made any major signings or trades since free agency began July 1. The only two moves the Spurs haven't made official are the signing of Gorgui Dieng and the two-way signing of Dominic Barlow. Post Draft Analysis and Summer League Opening Game Impressions In the episode, Bornstein and Zickgraf analyze the Spurs drafting Sochan with the 9th pick, Branham with the 20th pick, Wesley with the 25th pick, and agreeing to sign Barlow to a two-way contract. Branham, Wesley, and Barlow's play in the opening game of Summer League against the Cleveland Cavaliers are also discussed. Sochan won't play in any of the Summer League games after exiting health and safety protocols and because he's also dealing with a hamstring injury. The Spurs have four Summer League games remaining Sunday against the Golden State Warriors, Monday against the Houston Rockets, and Thursday against the Atlanta Hawks. Their final game will take place on either July 16 or July 17. Spurscast: Dejounte Murray Trade to Hawks In this emergency Spurscast episode 661/Project Spurs Round Table, Spurscast host Paul Garcia, Project Spurs staff members Joe Garcia, Benjamin Bornstein, Vickie Villareal, and Evan Townsend discuss: The Spurs agreeing to trade Dejounte Murray to the Atlanta Hawks for future picks What will the Spurs do with their cap space now? Will other veteran players be moved via trade? What will happen with Keldon Johnson's possible contract extension? Other offseason notes and more Murray to be traded to Atlanta Wednesday the San Antonio Spurs and Hawks agreed in principal to send Dejounte Murray to Atlanta for Danilo Gallinari, three future first round picks, and a future pick swap. What will the Spurs do with their cap space now? Once the trade with Murray and Gallinari is completed after July 6, the Spurs can still open over $30 million in cap space depending on what they do with free agents and players on non-guaranteed deals. Should the Spurs sign free agents to fill out the roster, or should they be a team ready to take on contracts via trade for more future draft picks? Will other veteran players be moved via trade? Now that the Spurs are indeed headed toward a rebuild, will veteran players like Jakob Poeltl, Doug McDermott, and Josh Richardson be moved too via trade? What will happen with Keldon Johnson's possible contract extension? The Spurs have until late October to extend Johnson's contract. Will they make that move in the coming months, or will they let Johnson become a restricted free agent like Lonnie Walker IV just became? The Spurs' lone win over the last four games was a blow out against the Houston Rockets. Defense has been an issue for the team. The Spurs have maintained the 16th ranked offense over the last week, but they've slipped down to 19th on defense. In other team news, Zach Collins is getting closer to his return to the team with more games played in Austin, while Keita Bates-Diop became the latest player on the team to enter health and safety protocols. With Andrew Wiggins being selected as a Western Conference All-Star starter, Dejounte Murray's path to becoming an All-Star might have become more difficult. In Spurscast episode 633, Spurscast host Paul Garcia and Project Spurs writer Benjamin Bornstein discuss the latest San Antonio Spurs News. Luka Samanic getting waived More observations from the preseason Notes and roster updates Luka Samanic waivedMonday the San Antonio Spurs waived 2019 first-round draftee Luka Samanic. While on paper the move seemed a bit surprising since Samanic was still just 21 years old and on his rookie scale contract, the eye test said differently. Samanic wasn't one of the Spurs' primary options at the 4 in three of the team's four preseason games, and with the team needing to trim the roster by October 18, roster cuts were going to be needed. Samanic will still get his $2.9 million salary for this season and other teams have until Wednesday to claim him off the league's waiver list. If a team claims Samanic off the waiver list, then he would be an active player on their roster and the Spurs would no longer be responsible for his salary this season. More observations from the preseasonThe Spurs fell to the Miami Heat Friday in the preseason and then defeated the Orlando Magic Sunday. The rotations have consistently looked like Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich will start Dejounte Murray, Derrick White, Keldon Johnson, Doug McDermott, and Jakob Poeltl. Off the bench, Popovich has been staggering the minutes of Murray and White, and having Bryn Forbes, Lonnie Walker IV, Devin Vassell, and Drew Eubanks as the second unit. The offense and defense are analyzed in the conversation, with notes on the Spurs not playing as fast as they said they were going to do in training camp. The Spurs currently rank 27th among 30 teams in pace this preseason. Notes and Roster UpdatesThe Spurs are now less than 10 days from having to waive or trade one more player to get their roster down to the league maximum of 15 players on guaranteed contracts. In Spurscast episode 629, Spurscast host Paul Garcia and Project Spurs writers Benjamin Bornstein and Jonas Clark discuss the latest San Antonio Spurs topics: Players with Austin Spurs who might get a training camp invite Austin Spurs players who may end up getting the vacant two-way roster spot Who will replace Matt Nielsen as the Austin Spurs' Head Coach? Players with Austin Spurs who might get a training camp invite The San Antonio Spurs currently have 18 players under contract when including Joe Wieskamp's two-way deal. This means the Spurs can still add up to two more players for training camp and the preseason. In the episode, there's a conversation regarding players with Austin Spurs experience who might get training camp invites for the San Antonio team. The Spurs' roster though will have to be set at 15 players on full NBA deals and two two-way players by October 18, after the conclusion of the preseason. Austin Spurs players who may end up getting the vacant two-way roster spot Now that Keita Bates-Diop has signed a full NBA contract, the Spurs have an open two-way roster spot available. There's a discussion in the episode regarding players who have Austin Spurs experience that would be good candidates for the Spurs' open two-way roster spot. Who will replace Matt Nielsen as the Austin Spurs' Head Coach? In early September, the San Antonio Spurs announced Matt Nielsen, who was the head coach of the Austin Spurs, had been hired as an assistant coach with the San Antonio organization. With Nielsen now in San Antonio, the question becomes who will replace him as the Austin head coach? The podcast discussion looks at a few G-League coaching candidates that can take over in Austin. Another note to watch is if the new G-League head coach for Austin will be someone who is able to help Wieskamp and possibly Joshua Primo develop, in the event San Antonio sends Primo to Austin during the regular season. In Spurscast episode 626, Spurscast host Paul Garcia and Project Spurs writer Benjamin Bornstein discuss: The Spurs' Las Vegas over/under for wins An update on where the team stands and decisions still to be made Lonnie Walker IV heading into next season The Spurs' Las Vegas over/under for wins BetOnline.ag recently released the over/under for wins for all 30 NBA teams. The Spurs' over/under for wins was 28.5 wins. If the schedule played out based on the over/under win projections, the Spurs would finish 13th in the Western Conference and be in position to land the 6th overall pick in the NBA Draft Lottery next summer. Update on where the team stands While training camp doesn't begin until late September, the Spurs still haven't completed some reported deals. The team still needs to sign Bryn Forbes to his contract and the Spurs need to sign Joe Wieskamp to a two-way contract. Keita Bates-Diop is also still a restricted free agent, with the opportunity to return to the Spurs on a two-way contract if he accepted the qualifying offer. Before the opening game of the regular season, the Spurs will have to either waive or trade two players because teams can only take 15 players and two two-way players on their roster into the regular season. Once Forbes and Wieskamp sign their deals, the Spurs will have 17 players and one two-way player on their roster. Lonnie Walker IV heading into next season This offseason the Spurs can either extend Lonnie Walker IV's contract before the first game of the regular season or if he plays out the season, he'll be a restricted free agent next offseason. In the podcast episode, there's a discussion using AI models from ProFitX reviewing Walker IV's progress last season and the areas where he's projected to improve in the coming season.
