But how does one even go about bringing four high-profile individuals into Salem during its busiest season? Well, we've got the answer for you! It involved a lot of leg work, a lot of planning, and good old fashioned Salem community. Salem has a long history with witches and witchcraft as the site of the infamous trials of the late 1600s. Since those dark times, the town has grown to embrace people of all walks of life and is a popular tourist location, especially during the Halloween season. In fact, the town can be quite crowded during the holidays. So, Gary and GoldieAnn thought we would bring a little bit of that Salem magic to you with one of the town's premier street ambassadors, Borah Brewington Snaggletooth XIII. This cranky, green-skinned witch is a positive, entertaining, and sometimes mischievous witch that roams the streets year-round and especially during October. Borah can be found spreading magic, engaging with people, and officiating weddings.Join Gary and GoldieAnn as they take a walk Within the Mist to meet with Brian "BORAH!" Sims to talk about the rich history, but most importantly, the Salem of today. Perhaps we can even convince them to share some of their poetry so as they say "Hop on your broomstick and let's see where they carry us."Salem's Black Hat Society: http://salemsblackhatsociety.org/index.htmlBORAH's! October Salem adventures continue! Welcome to the city of Salem which, according to Chelle, walks the balance between witches, witchcraft, history, and pop culture.Chelle and Laylla discuss Samantha from Bewitched and how they feel about her statue in the heart of Salem. Borah and Salem's Black Hat Society get a mention yet again because they are just that awesome. And of course, we gush over The Ropes Mansion also known as The Hocus Pocus House, yet again. Its such a fun spot. We should have asked one of the many Sanderson sisters walking around to pose with us so we could be a trio of witches. MuahahahaIn this episode our high duo of wayward witches find themselves visiting the Charter St cemetery, also known as The Burying Point Cemetery. There are several notable souls buried here, and also rumored to haunt its pathways, including a Judge from the witch trials, Judge John Hathorne, who is the great great grandfather of author Nathaniel Hawthorne.Just outside the haunted cemetery (the second oldest kept up cemetery in the USA), is The Witch Trials Memorial, not to be confused with the OTHER memorial site called Proctor's Ledge. This memorial has the names, date of death, and means of execution etched in stone. The memorial ledges are often adorned with flowers and tokens from visitors. While respectfully toking in public on "Laylla's Dad's Sungrown" and EndGame, the witches also headed down to tour The House of The Seven Gables, (also called The Turner Ingersoll Mansion) made famous by the book of the same name written by Nathanial Hawthorne. Is the house haunted? Did anyone see a ghost? Who is "Duchess" Susannah Ingersoll and why is she so freaking cool?Is there an update to Never Again The Burning? https://www.amazon.com/Fourth-Face-Goddess-Gale-Hamby-ebook/dp/B00DPUI2E8/ref=sr_1_1?crid=285DUMTQVCE8X&keywords=the+fourth+face+of+the+goddess&qid=1664376718&s=digital-text&sprefix=the+fourth+face+of+the+goddess%2Cdigital-text%2C92&sr=1-1

AWOOOOOOOOOO!!! It's WOLFENOOT season! Joining me on this episode is the delightful Wolfmum Jax Goss to talk about the new holiday, Wolfenoot. Wolfenoot was created by in 2018 by 7-year old Wolfkid who thought it would be great to have a holiday dedicated to being nice to animals and pets. So, he invented one and it has taken off around the world. This is the third anniversary of Wolfenoot which will occur this year (and every year) on 23 November. Join me to chat with Wolfmum about how the event came into being, what do do on Wolfenoot, being nice to animals, supporting charities and rescue centers when you can (either monetarily or by volunteering), and sharing small gifts with loved ones and pets. Although Wolfenoot is named for the Great Wolf Howly, it is not just for wolves and dogs. The wait is over and the The Oracle of Freya - Journey of The Völva oracle card set is coming to kickstarter (and later for sale on the website) in October 2020. To "kick" off the campaign, I interviewed deck creator Bela Siol. Bela is the creator of the Oracle of Nehalennia (episode 22) and the Transformational Oracle of the Morrighan (episode 29). These decks are still available at belasiol.com. We have a fun time discussing her inspiration to create the Oracle of Freya and how Freya connected with her to do it. Listen in to a discussion with author Gunivortus Goos about his latest works to be translated into English (Germanic Magic) and updated (Goddess Holle). Both books are lengthy volumes filled with fantastic history and ways to connect to a Germanic based practice of Heathenry/Asastru. Germanic magic is a modern system developed from Germanic folk practices and relationships with the Elder Futhark runes for an intensive magical experience today. Goddess Holle is revised and expanded to include lore, folk tales from the region, and how she is connecting to people today. Gunivortus' website (boudicca.de) includes all his books which are printed in Dutch, English, and German as well as articles, blog posts, and short audio files of stories and legends. Musician Hauk Heidallsman, joins me on Uncontained to talk about his new solo album Red Tail Rising! This album came out in February and now that most of us are on an involuntary stay-cation, Hauk is using his time to work on his next album for his other band Black Hat Society. We talk about some of the challenges Hauk has come across recording his new album. we also discus what influenced and helped shape the his new album Red Tail Rising.Like all touring entertainers Hauk was forced to cancel all of his shows until this crazy Corona thing is over. I'm excited for the time when acts can start touring again, because by that time all of these entertainers will be starving to get on the road with so many new creations to show the world. Until the entertainers can hit the road again many are in need of a little help. I am not asking for hand outs for entertainers but if you are in a position that you can afford it please think about actually purchasing some of music that is almost always streamed for free, or by some of their merch. I had to throw that out there before it got bad and we had to bring Sarah McLachlan in to sing a sad song and make you all cry like the ASPCA commercials.Plug in your ear buds, This is how Hauk Heimdallsman Lives Uncontained!!Facebook: @haukrulesFacebook: @blackhatsocietyBandcamp: Black Hat SocietyBandCamp: Hauk See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In April 2020, much of the world is practicing social distancing, staying at home (except for necessary errands/work), and finding alternative ways to hold ritual, socialize, and share experiences due to the worldwide pandemic. Enter online video conferencing. Video conferencing has increased in workplaces and as a venue for teaching and learning more than ever. Among these cyber experiences is the growing use video conferencing for conducting rituals. This is not new as online rituals have been around for a while, but with the need to remain at home, more are evaluating their views on the practice. Jan and guest Robb Lewis talk about the benefits of facilitating and participating in online rituals. We bring up that some people are decidedly opposed to them, but focus on the good things that come from the experiences. Such as a better ability for participation: from those who are not near others of a Norse Pagan practice those who cannot attend due to physical or medical reasons those who can join from long distances Online rituals are not superior to in-person events, but they certainly make it possible for greater participation. Robb is a practicing pagan of over 20 years and is the president of a newly founded Ring of *Ghosti-, a religion of hospitality. You can find out more about him at his Facebook page, his website, the Ring of Ghosti Facebook. Check out the Frith Forge 2020's online events 15 August 2020. Welcome to Gifts of the Wyrd, a podcast for and about inclusive Heathenry / Norse Germanic pagan paths. In this episode, I celebrate the fourth anniversary of the podcast. It's been four years of speaking with interesting people doing interesting things to manifest and hold inclusive paths of the Norse/Germanic traditions. A big thanks to you all for listening and supporting the people and works that are being done. I also bid farewell to PantheaCon. After 26 years, PantheaCon retires with sad farwells and joyful memories. A new organization is currently planning for a convention to be held in the same location and same time frame beginning next year. I close out the episode with the full recording of Thunderbarrows Hill by Damh the Bard. He creates some wonderful music (Check out Spirit of Albion among others) and I'm thankful he gave permission to play this song for you. I'm happy to be asked to contribute articles about runes to a few publications including Taufr ezine (@heidhrcraft #taufrzine) and The Cartomancer (@thecartomancermagazine #thecartomancermagazine). March 19, 2020: Today, the world is dealing with a pandemic called Coronavirus (COVID-19). Many are isolating and in quarantine status to help flatten the curve of infection rates and allow the virus to subside and not overwhelm medical treatment. Along with others, I wish good health to you all. Please be safe, follow CDC/WHO guidelines, and treat others with kindness. Notes: Check out the first issue of Taufr eZine. Taufr is a publication of the new Inclusive Norse Path of Heidhr Craft. Take a look at this interesting path and my regular column: "You've Been Runed." Check out The Cartomancer magazine. The Cartomancer is a quarterly journal featuring original content in the form of articles, reviews, artwork and more. And I will have an article in the Summer 2020 edition! Welcome to Gifts of the Wyrd, a podcast for and about inclusive Heathenry. This episode, my guests are Bat Collazo and Luke Babb to talk about - Loki and his family. Loki is a being of the Heathen/Norse practices who is often regarded as the trickster god not to be trusted, blamed for the end of of the world (Ragnarok), and should certainly not be honored or a part of any practice today. In this episode, we will not discuss the various myths and lore (you can look those up yourself in the Prose and Poetic Eddas or other Norse mythology collections) nor will we discuss whether one should or should not honor or worship Loki or any of his kin. We talk about our experiences and observations of others with them in the community. Bat is a queer Heathen of color, writer, crafter, and artist who is also heading up the Troth's upcoming Loki devotional (fall 2020) from Lulu.com. Follow Bat on Instagram at @batcollazo and on her blog, Batbruja. Luke is an eclectic polytheist and member of the Troth. They are also a member of the Fellowship of the Phoenix (a pagan order focused on queer experiences) and a columnist for The Wild Hut. This episode I have the pleasure of talking about runes and ancestors with Lonnie Scott, host of Weird Web Radio. Lonnie is also a runester, the Illinois representative for The Troth, a tarot reader, hypnotist, and father. Lonnie's essay on ancestors is published in Elhaz Ablaze: A Compendium of Chaos Heathenry available on Amazon in print and ebook. During the rune talk, I mention my friend's oracle walks. She posts images from those walks as #sidewalkoracle. Please follow the hashtag on Instagram. Links to Lonnie are: Wierd Web Radio, Tarot Heathen, Mattoon Hypnosis. Check out Elhaz Ablaze here. Jan speaks with Jeremy Baer about his new Thor devotional book entitled Hammer, Oak and Lightening: A Thor Devotional. It is published by The Troth and is part of a series of devotional books to the Gods and Goddesses of Germanic Spirituality. The book was released in early August 2019 and contains references to the stories of Thor, how he has been honored through different periods of time and people, and modern experiences, poems, and rituals to share and compare how he is connecting to people now. To discuss our attendance at Trothmoot 2019, I am join by The Wild Hunt columnist Luke Babb. Luke is an eclectic polytheist and a magical Jack of All Trades. They are the Herald of the Chicago Temple of the Fellowship of the Phoenix, where they help to design and offer education to the queer pagan community. They are also a proud member of The Troth. Check out Luke’s blog post about Trothmoot on the Wild Hunt. Trothmoot is an annual event held by The Troth which hosts rituals, workshops, and its annual membership meeting. This year had a special meaning for many because it hosted a ritual devoted to Loki on it's main program, something that had not been allowed for 10 years. The prohibition was removed earlier this year. We talk about the ritual and how it meant to each of us with our own relationships with Loki and the community he connects with. Check out the new Heathen History Podcast. The Heathen History Podcast is a joint effort of Lauren Crow and Ben Waggoner, longtime friends and co-founders of Black Bear Kindred of Central Arkansas. Inspired by Ben's research on the history of the modern Heathen movement for the third edition of Our Troth, each episode will be a deep dive into a person, organization, or event that deeply shaped modern Heathenry. They strive to look as objectively as they can at the good, bad, and ugly in our past. The Transformational Oracle of the Morrighan deck by Bela Siol This episode we are going to take a short visit to our Celtic neighbors to visit with oracle deck creator Bela Siol. Bela created the Nehalennia deck (see episode 22) and, as she is also working on a Freya oracle deck, I thought it would be nice to discuss with her about the deck she is creating for The Morrighan. The Morrighan is a Goddess of the Celtic Pantheon and has close relations to Freya. I know many Heathens who work with The Morrighan, either regularly or occasionally. So She is very much connected to many people. Update (4 Dec2019): Order The Transformational Oracle of the Morrighan from Bela's website: Bela Siol Find Bela and the Oracle on Facebook: @belasioloracledecks and Instagram @bela.siol Gifts of the Wyrd contact: Follow me on Instagram: @wyrdgifts1 Twitter: @WyrdGifts Facebook: @GiftsoftheWyrd Email: GiftsoftheWyrd@gmail.com Jan's Facebook page @JohnHijatt Please leave feedback on iTunes. Welcome to another episode of Gifts of the Wyrd. This episode, we pipe aboard two Heathens serving in the US Navy who are taking steps to lead Heathen services (blots/study groups etc) aboard their commands. Josh and Josh are Troth members who serve aboard two separate commands and talk about their journeys to having Heathen (and Pagan) services and study groups regularly held while they are at sea. They joined me for an interview at the end of September 2018 The Heathen activities aboard a US Navy ship were recognized nationwide in early January 2019 with media outlets picking up a story about the services held during deployment. Our guest, Josh W, was interviewed in the story which was carried in the Navy Times, Washington Times, Daily Mail, and other outlets. Great job! And we're back. After a 6 month hiatus, I'm pleased to be recording the podcast again. It's been a hectic spring and beginning of summer with computer issues, travel, and family things to work out. So it has delayed the timing and ability to record. But things have settled glad to ge the podcast going. A huge note of thanks to Xander Folmer of Hughinn's Heathen Hof for the amazing logo and banners created for Gifts of the Wyrd. They are amazing and beautiful. I am really pleased with the image and working with him is amazing. Contact Xan for graphic design ideas and work you may need. This episode we get caught up and comment about issues within the Heathen community regarding some groups choosing to make their Heathenry exclusive to those who do not fit their vision of a white, heterosexual, of certain European heritage, or other ways to exclude on immutable traits. Gifts of the Wyrd does not engage in that and stands by an inclusive Heathen practice with many other amazing groups and people. Together we can create safe spaces for people to learn, grow, worship, fellowship, and find community and allies. Review of the Viking Oracle: The Viking Oracle is by Stacey Demarco with artwork by Jimmy Manton and published by Blue Angel Publishing. After a little catch up session, I review the Viking Oracle. This will be a long episode, so it's ok to take some breaks at the natural stopping poings. About 25 minutes in or so will start the review. The next stopping point will be at about 43 minutes in with a music piece. Then finish out the remaining 40 minutes or so with discussion about the oracle deck. The deck review will be in three parts. Introduction to the deck and artwork overall, the runes of the deck and the oracle part of the deck. I hope you find this helpful with your decision about this deck. email: giftsofthewyrd@gmail.com twitter: @wyrdgifts Facebook: @giftsofthewyrd www.giftsofthewyrd.com Music: Intro/out: Five for Freya from Apple Blossoms and Abandoned Tracks - 2014 by Hauk Voluspa 4 & 5 by Tonya Threet from the forthcoming album Voluspa.
