Troy Arntsen, co-founder and president of Voluspa, transformed a simple idea into a global luxury candle brand renowned for its exquisite scents and impeccable quality. Hailing from Minnesota, Troy was a self-described "daydreamer" who defied expectations when he traded a promising engineering career for the world of essential oils. His decision, met with initial doubts from his family, was fueled by an unshakable entrepreneurial spirit. In 1999, armed with only a few thousand dollars and the unwavering support of his partner, Troy relocated to Southern California with a dream to create Voluspa. What began as a humble kitchen operation—where late-night candle pouring was the norm—evolved into a global brand, with Voluspa candles now sold in over 80 countries. The company's success stems from its commitment to using premium, natural ingredients and a dedication to elegant design, setting it apart in a market saturated with generic offerings.Troy's engineering background proved invaluable as he developed Voluspa's signature coconut wax blend, a unique innovation that remains central to the brand's identity. Over the past 25 years, he navigated the complexities of scaling a business, from building a team to mastering the e-commerce landscape, all while staying devoted to his family.Today, Voluspa is a leader in luxury home fragrances, with Troy still passionately steering the ship. His journey from a small-town Minnesota dreamer to a successful entrepreneur is a powerful testament to the importance of pursuing one's passions, upholding core values, and building a business with integrity and perseverance.*The Founder Hour is brought to you by Outer. How did the Viking Norse tell a story as important as Ragnarok (the end of the world) in poetry, and then in prose? What does prose require that poetry does not, and vice-versa, and especially when the accounts we have are separated by centuries of historical change, and religious conversion? In this third episode on Norse Mythology, I read the story of Ragnarok from the Prose Edda (dating to c. 1220), and then its corresponding section in the poem Voluspa (c. 1000) in the Poetic Edda. Each section is preceded by the story of the death of Odin's son, Balder, which in many ways precipitated Ragnarok. I also read from a later poem, Balder's Dreams (c. 1300). The translation of the Poetic Edda (and Balder's Dreams) that I read from is by Andy Orchard, and the Prose Edda by Anthony Faulkes. The commentary I read from throughout the episode comes from the translation and commentary by Ursula Dronke. The essential reference books on Norse myth that I will be using for this series are John Lindow's Norse Mythology: A Guide to the Gods, Heroes, Rituals & Beliefs, Rudolf Simek's Dictionary of Northern Mythology, and Andy Orchard's Cassell Dictionary of Norse Myth & Legend. This week, we recount the tale of the Norse, who were also called Norsemen or Vikings, depending upon the era under discussion. The Germanic-speaking Norse people lived in Scandanavia and other parts of Northern Europe between 200 and 700 AD. After 700 C.E., when they began raiding and settling in Britain, Iceland, Greenland, and elsewhere, they are generally referred to as Vikings, who came to prominence in the 9th and 10th centuries. Different versions and offshoots of their myths spread into the counties they inhabited, especially, for example, Britain and Germany. Many myths that we call Anglo-Saxon were influenced by Norse myths, as were the myths of Germany, contained in works such as the Nibelungenlied. The primary source for the myths of the Norse people, including the creation myth, is Iceland, where the old Norse religion remained in force long after the rest of Europe had been Christianized. It was not until the year 1000 that the Icelandic Assembly voted to replace the old religion with Christianity. The Norse myths that we know now are contained in the Icelandic text called the Younger Edda or the Prose Edda, compiled by the Icelandic historian Snorri Sturluson in about 1220 A.D.. Snorri's work is based on much older works from the oral tradition and from the Elder Edda or Poetic Edda, which was written down between the ninth and twelfth centuries, and re-discovered in 1643. It is sometimes called the Edda of Saemund because it was wrongly attributed to Saemund Sigfusson, a writer of the 12th century. The Norse creation myth retold by Snorri in the 10th-century Sddaic poem, the Voluspa, is an animistic myth centering on the Ice Giant, Ymir, from whose dismembered body the world was made. Welcome to Gifts of the Wyrd, a podcast for and about inclusive Heathenry / Norse Germanic pagan paths. In this episode, I celebrate the fourth anniversary of the podcast. It's been four years of speaking with interesting people doing interesting things to manifest and hold inclusive paths of the Norse/Germanic traditions. A big thanks to you all for listening and supporting the people and works that are being done. I also bid farewell to PantheaCon. After 26 years, PantheaCon retires with sad farwells and joyful memories. A new organization is currently planning for a convention to be held in the same location and same time frame beginning next year. I close out the episode with the full recording of Thunderbarrows Hill by Damh the Bard. He creates some wonderful music (Check out Spirit of Albion among others) and I'm thankful he gave permission to play this song for you. I'm happy to be asked to contribute articles about runes to a few publications including Taufr ezine (@heidhrcraft #taufrzine) and The Cartomancer (@thecartomancermagazine #thecartomancermagazine). March 19, 2020: Today, the world is dealing with a pandemic called Coronavirus (COVID-19). Many are isolating and in quarantine status to help flatten the curve of infection rates and allow the virus to subside and not overwhelm medical treatment. Along with others, I wish good health to you all. Please be safe, follow CDC/WHO guidelines, and treat others with kindness. Notes: Check out the first issue of Taufr eZine. Taufr is a publication of the new Inclusive Norse Path of Heidhr Craft. Take a look at this interesting path and my regular column: "You've Been Runed." Check out The Cartomancer magazine. The Vikings! Sure, they had helmets and hammers, but did they also have... poetry? Indeed they did! In this episode, we talk to Noah Tetzner, host of The History of Vikings Podcast, about the collection of Old Norse verses called the Poetic Edda - and in particular, we look at the first of these, the succinct poem known as The Völuspá. Dated to around 1250 A.D., the Völuspá recorded centuries of oral tradition. Today, it serves as one of our best introductions to Viking mythology, affording us a window into a fascinating and mysterious culture. Help support the show at patreon.com/literature. Jan interviews author Connla Freyjason about his book Norse Witch: Claiming the Heidhrinn Heart. This book is on the wave of a movement of encouraging those of the Heathen practices to embrace their relationships with the 9 Worlds in a modern context. If you are tired of hearing "you're doing it wrong" by others, this is a book that will inspire you to build on the things we can piece together from the lore and archeological finds to develop thriving relationships with the Gods, the vaettir, and the ancestors. Through active participation, we use the gnosis (experience and knowledge) we gain through those relationships to create and engage in meaningful practices today. We touch on other topics and discuss the upcoming release of Blessings of Fire and Ice, a devotional companion in the Norse Witch series. Was a Germanic goddess Eostre or Ostara ever honored in the old days? Are Easter and the German 'Ostern' named after her? Does the widespread Easter lore have roots in ancient pagan rituals? The answers to these questions are disputed among both laymen and scholars. Often it can be hard to distinguish between faith and facts. Therefore, the available sources have been brought together in this book and offered with explanatory notes. However, it is left to the reader to consider whether in Germany a goddess Ostara, Eostar or Ostera was worshiped as was Eostre in England. In this episode, Jan Tjeerd discusses the book by GardenStone for Ostara. Eostre Ostara Eostar by GardenStone is available from GardenStone's website and on Amazon. This Voluspa project promises to be done in a similar manner. Sam will be talking about the project, the process, and more regarding the Voluspa.
And we're back. After a 6 month hiatus, I'm pleased to be recording the podcast again. It's been a hectic spring and beginning of summer with computer issues, travel, and family things to work out. So it has delayed the timing and ability to record. But things have settled glad to ge the podcast going. A huge note of thanks to Xander Folmer of Hughinn's Heathen Hof for the amazing logo and banners created for Gifts of the Wyrd. They are amazing and beautiful. I am really pleased with the image and working with him is amazing. Contact Xan for graphic design ideas and work you may need. This episode we get caught up and comment about issues within the Heathen community regarding some groups choosing to make their Heathenry exclusive to those who do not fit their vision of a white, heterosexual, of certain European heritage, or other ways to exclude on immutable traits. Gifts of the Wyrd does not engage in that and stands by an inclusive Heathen practice with many other amazing groups and people. Together we can create safe spaces for people to learn, grow, worship, fellowship, and find community and allies.
