Today Matt & Todd saddle up with (not Wolverine) Logan for a retrospective on one of cinema's most iconic, sharp‑eyed but little-discussed legends: Lee Van Cleef.Few actors have ever done more with a squint, a silhouette, or the simple act of entering a room. Lee Van Cleef embodied a whole cinematic archetype. From Westerns to war films to Italian genre oddities to 80s action pulp, his career is a treasure full of gems any actor would be proud of.This episode explores the major stops along that trail, to name a few that we mention:High Noon (1952)Van Cleef's film debut, silent but unforgettable. Even without dialogue, he stands out—those cheekbones and that stare do half the acting for him. A small role, but the beginning of legend. For a Few Dollars More (1965)The real turning point. As Colonel Douglas Mortimer, Van Cleef becomes a full‑fledged Leone gunslinger. He was cool, lethal, and unexpectedly soulful. He matches Eastwood beat for beat, proving he wasn't just a villain, but a presence. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966)Angel Eyes. One of the greatest villains in film history. Van Cleef's performance is all precision: calm, polite, and terrifying. The Big Gundown (1966)A masterpiece of the Spaghetti Western era. Van Cleef's Jonathan Corbett is a bounty hunter with a conscience, and the film gives him room to be complex, conflicted, and commanding. This is peak Van Cleef—charismatic, dangerous, and magnetic. The Big Showdown (1967)A looser, more playful follow‑up to Gundown, showing Van Cleef's ability to shift gears without losing his edge. He's still the coolest man in the room, but now with a wink.Barquero (1970) A criminally underrated American Western and one of Van Cleef's best roles. As Travis, the ferry‑man who becomes the last line of defense against a gang of killers, Van Cleef is gruff, stubborn, and absolutely riveting. This is the movie that proves he wasn't just a European Western icon—he could carry a gritty American frontier story with equal force. If you watch only one deep‑cut Van Cleef film, make it Barquero which features a tremendous cast with stellar performances including the always great Warren Oates and Forrest Tucker.Escape from New York (1981)Snake Plissken may be the star, but Van Cleef's Hauk is the heavy with a steel core. Older, grayer, but still radiating authority. Code Name: Wild Geese (1984)Pure 80s Euro‑action pulp. Van Cleef brings gravitas to a movie that desperately needs it, elevating the mercenary‑mayhem with that trademark “I've seen everything and survived it” energy. One of the most action-packed endings you'll see with a lifetime of pyrotechnics in one scene. The Master (1984, TV Series)Van Cleef as a ninja master. On television. In the 80s.Is it absurd? Yes.Is it terrible? Actually, no. Its really just fine 80s cheese. He brings sincerity to a role that could've been pure camp, and the result is a cult oddity that's impossible not to enjoy.Plus:Ride Lonesome, Sabata, The Magnificent Seven Ride, The OctagonLee Van Cleef never phoned it in, even in the wildest genre films. He could be heroic, villainous, or something intriguingly in‑between. He had a face that told stories before he spoke a word.He elevated everything he touched—from masterpieces to B‑movies to TV curiosities. If you know, you know. If you don't, find out via some of the best western and action films you missedMatt has over 100+ lists for movie suggestions on LetterboxdYou can reach out on Bluesky: @MovieMattSirois Terrible movies often find him, even under under the alias Marcus at Movie Asylum of the Weird, Bad and Wonderful.Follow who we follow:Once Upon a Geek and The Fade Out Podcast

Seelenplan-Lesung: https://cathrin-hauk.de/dein-seelenwe... Imagine the excitement of having your model railroad appear on the cover of the hobby's premier magazine for the first time?? That's exactly what happened to Mike Hauk When his Susquehanna and New York, Railroad appeared on the cover of the May issue of Railroad Model Craftsman. This HO scale railroad is based on a short line located in the central Pennsylvania mountains, north of Williamsport and along the West branch of the Susquehanna River. Mike first discovered this railroad while reading Tom Taber's series on logging railroads, while more inspiration came from the family hunting camp that wasn't far from an entire freight yard thick with woods after its abandonment years before. It's a great podcast and one we're sure you'll enjoy!!

Send us a textTyler Hauk guides elk in some unique terrain which mixes the deceptively flat rolling short grass prairie of eastern Oregon and the unreasonably steep canyons that border them. He also used to take cruise ship tourists on trips to view bears and you'll want to hang out until the end of the episode to hear that one. Trust me. Follow his Instagram here.
I had the pleasure of being joined on this episode by esteemed Åsta Haukås, a professor of language education at the University of Bergen, Norway. Her research focuses on improving students' ability to learn multiple languages and supporting language teachers' motivation and professional development. It was great to learn from Prof. Haukås about language teacher motivation and how we can support it until retirement. This is a key element that is often overlooked in the research but we know it is vital for sustaining student motivation in our classes. A fascinating discussion I am sure you will all enjoy and learn from! Please let me know what you think! I'd love to hear from you. Keep in touch and share widely! Mississippi River hammers, Cory Hauk & Wyatt Stout, made the trip up for an intergalactic conversation. The track record these two have tournament fishing on the river is something special. Cory's list is longer, but he never sent it to me; so as far as I'm concerned, he's won 3 St. Jude's in a row with his partner Brian Harmon, has had a run of sheer dominance on multiple river pools, and has proven himself regionally as well. Wyatt has wins in the MSBC Circuit, Bass World Sports, 3 Buzz's Classic wins, a BFL co-angler win on Rayburn, 2 College Regional Championship wins on Carlyle and Kentucky Lake, been to 5 College National Championships, 2 state teams, numerous college top 5's, the MNBN Team Trail win this year, a TBF win this year, and then a shit load of local club and city open type tournaments. On top of that, we had ourselves a damn good time. Enjoy! Brought to you by: Waypoint Angler Supply. Visit their website and use the code: "galaxy20" to save 20% on your next order. This week on Fabulous Film & Friends we're going to analyze a trio of “cult classics” from the actor/director pairing of Kurt Russell and John Carpenter. Starting with 1981's Escape From New York starring Mr. Russell, Donald Pleasance, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Harry Dean Stanton, Adrienne Barbeau, Isaac Hayes and Season Hubley, on to 1982's The Thing starring Russell, Donald Moffat, Keith David, Richard Dysart, David Clennon, T.K, Carter, Richard Masur, Charles Hallahan and Wilford Brimley, And finally 1986's Big Trouble in Little China starring Russell, Dennis Dun, Kim Cattrall, James Hong, Donald Li, Kate Burton, Suzee Pai and Victor Wong, My two guests are the only pair who would be up for such a comprehensive cinematic showdown : Lit major and lil' Sis Roseanne Caputi and Actor Funnyman Photobug, Alex Robertson. Before we run the gauntlet, the synopses: In Escape From New Yorkex soldier and current convict Snake Plisskin is forced under the threat of death by government agent Hauk to rescue the President of the United States after a group of insurgents cause Air Force One to crash in New York city which by 1997 has become a walled off maximum security prison. The Thing catalogues the paranoia, fear and sheer horror that ensues when a shape-shifting alien invades an American Antarctic Research Facility. Big Trouble in Little China follows the mystic, martial-arts laden misadventures of blowhard truck driver Jack Burton, who, on a routine stop in San Francisco's Chinatown wins a bet over his buddy Wang Chi. In order to collect his money, Jack follows Wang to the airport to meet Wang's beautiful green-eyed betrothed bride Miao Yin who is summarily kidnapped by the evil ancient supernatural gang Lord David Lo Pan. Lo Pan, for his part, inhabits a broken down and decrepit old body and can only move as a spirit in his young and powerful form. In order to attain full strength and fleshly form, Lo Pan needs Wang's green-eyed bride to break his century old curse. With the help of lawyer Gracie Law and a troupe of warriors led by magical Egg Shen, Jack and Wang charge into David Lo Pan's compound to stage a daring rescue. Which film rates the highest?Find out!

There's a simple phrase that if we all embraced, would make the world a better place, "You be You!" Of course, we rarely allow others to be themselves and then we wonder why we have to dress up as being someone we're not to please others. Today's guest has done her fair share of dressing up - cross dressing to be specific - and she's not afraid if someone is not happy about. Savannah Hauk shares her journey to own her truth, living a successful male-to-female dual gender life. About Savannah Detroit-born Savannah Hauk is an author, podcaster, advocate and TEDx Speaker. She lives a confident, visible and successful male-to-female dual gender life. Through a lifetime of experience and research, Savannah has come to understand the many reasons men need to express a more feminine persona, the struggles and fears they face, and the weight of the transgender labels they accept but may not truly or fully understand. Her eLit award-winning "Living with Crossdressing" book series is written to demystify and destigmatize the dual gender experience for both crossdressing men and the people who love them. Savannah also co-hosts the weekly The Fox and the Phoenix Podcast, reinforcing the same positive and inclusive message of diverse gender identity and multiple expression. She also leads conference workshops and has given two TEDx talks. When Savannah isn't working or advocating, she spends her time with the MCU, LEGO, Netflix, and spending time with her girlfriend and their two fur babies. When I was a teenager, I started actually doing oil painting with Bob Ross at home. I think he's a master, mindful art teacher, one of the first that I remember when I would paint these happy trees and play with my own creative world on the painting and noticing things, that I would feel so much calmer, and relaxed, and was able to work through a lot of anxiety that I had at the time. In my late 20s, I had a cancer diagnosis. And I went through surgery and radiation. And at that time, I really discovered a practice of combining mindfulness with collage and writing and a lot of self-reflection. And that was so huge for me to be able to sit with the emotions and the grief that I had at the time around all of that and to be able to offer such care and compassion to myself. I think mindfulness, through the collage practice that I was using, was just so so huge and such a gift that I could give myself. So there are so many examples, which is why I love this work. But absolutely, it's helped me emotionally tune in and notice what's happening with my emotions and not have as much judgment, and have more compassion. Because of that, then I'm able to feel more relaxed and less anxious or stressed. Thoughts on Breathing I think the breath is an interesting thing to track and notice how it shifts and changes all the time, and can be amazing feedback for us. Suggested Resources Book: Waking the Tiger: Heiltrauma By Peter Levine App: Insight Timer Bullying Story I was bullied when I was much younger, I had extra weight on me as a kiddo. When I was in elementary school, I would get teased and bullied a lot for my extra weight. For those that were bullying me, I can definitely see that having mindfulness introduced for adults or children when there is bullying could offer a place of awareness of just noticing for them what is happening and awareness of these narratives and tapes that we have, and that there are all these different narratives, and to not have as much judgment around that. I think probably the biggest part that comes to mind for me is this resiliency with our nervous system, by having mindfulness and by having that nonjudgment, that perhaps even as a child, I could notice sensations and where I'm feeling anxiety in my body or noticing that I'm holding my breath and have ways that I can take care of myself at that moment and also connect with those who would be supportive for me.
