Looking in from the outside, it seems that chefs and food professionals have an uphill battle when it comes to relationships. Late nights, erratic schedules and stress don't make for the best foundation for marriage and family. But sometimes, with lots of perseverance, understanding and effort, things just work. I sat down with Chef Lloyd Foust, who just joined the team of Salt, to open Poppy in Larchmere, and his wife Rachel Ventura, the proud creator/owner of FrankieLynn Hot Dogs, to hear how they make it work. The couple met while working together at The Black Pig and now they're married with two sons. Over a couple of glasses of wine at Old Brooklyn haunt, Opal on Pearl, we find out what makes their marriage work. The truth is, all you need to do is sit with them for 15 minutes, and you know the answer. I hope you enjoy this "Valentine's Day Episode" as much I did when I made it. So......it's the holiday season..... How did that even happen???  It really seems to have come out of nowhere this year! As fun as the holidays can be, they can also be really difficult for people for a variety of reasons.  But the two that I want to focus on today are: Food; and Family/friends Obviously, food abounds during the holidays.  Most people have more than one work party, friend gathering, and/or family celebration to attend.  All of those will involve food.   Lots and lots of food. And while it would be fantastic to just be excited about these gatherings and simply look forward to them, that's a big ask for emotional eaters.  Very often, people who struggle with food are extremely anxious around the holidays.  Which makes sense!  It's hard for anyone to feel like they have a handle on food this time of year.   Add our family and friends to this picture.  Hopefully, you have a loving, supportive group surrounding you.  But not everyone is that lucky.  For many folx, holiday gatherings are a time of comments about how you're eating, body shaming, and stressful family dynamics..   Obviously, these gatherings can be very triggering.  Whether it's fearing the food situation or the people you're going to be celebrating with, the holidays can be rough.   And if this is the case for you, I am so, so sorry.   On this week's podcast episode, we're talking about how to handle food and family/friends during the holidays.  I give you five tips on how to make the holidays a little bit easier if you're worried about food or if you're walking into some difficult social gatherings.   Take a listen! Perhaps the most relatable aspect of the show was its depiction of all things food, eating & solid cuisine. What is the role of food in the Jewish community, does it mean more to our community than others? 1) Diffrent kosher cuisines 2) Toughest parts about keeping kosher 3) What kinds of kosher keeping is there? 4) the private chef life and what it's all about 5) Is a healthy kosher lifestyle attainable? 6) Why is it stereotypical for only women to be able to cook or have to cook!? 7) The rise of kosher taste is up! What do we do about it? 8) Inflation is here! How to budget and get the best bang for your grocery shopping 9) why is every Jewish single either a professional and a cook or a DJ? Or girl is a fashion influencer? 10) Is food a placebo for intimacy, partying or other vices? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/shidduchim/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/shidduchim/support

Tembi Locke is an actor, an author, a screenwriter, and a producer who really knows how to connect with her audience. Her New York Times bestselling book, From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home was Reese Witherspoon's 2019 Book Club pick. Reese loved it so much, she's executive producing the adaptation for a Netflix series where Zoe Saldana will star as Tembi.  Tembi's memoir, From Scratch, is a sweeping, autobiographical romance that follows an American woman as she falls in love with a Sicilian man while studying abroad in Italy and then builds a life with him in the United States. When she unexpectedly loses her young Italian chef husband to illness, she's challenged to pull herself through grief so she can raise their adopted daughter as they would have raised her together: with hope, joy, and infinite love. Cooking becomes a way for her to be close to Saro both in Los Angeles and in his mother, Nona's kitchen, and why mourning food (morning with a “u”) offers comfort and sustenance. It's why a bowl of pasta always makes us feel better. Tembi has over sixty film and television credits under her belt as an accomplished actor and is currently recurring on Never Have I Ever, a comedy created by Mindy Kaling. Offscreen, Tembi is a nationally recognized speaker for her keynotes on resilience, loss, and motherhood with her TEDx talk viewed by individuals and nonprofits worldwide. If you're anything like us, you've had at least one uncomfortable experience at a holiday gathering. Spending holidays with family and friends can be both great and unsettling at times. With Thanksgiving coming up and the December holidays right around the corner, we share in this episode how we've learned to navigate food and other people during this time of the year. This hasn't been easy for us. First, we discuss how we used to experience holidays, then what we've done to shift our experience, and finally how we approach these gatherings now. Of course, our conversation is much deeper than just food and interactions with other people. We dive into topics such as: How to restore your mind-body connection at holiday events What we've done to help ourselves not be as affected by the words and actions of others How to communicate with others in a way that makes us feel our best How to figure out your current values around food and holidays in general How to change your mindset to welcome new experiences And so much more. Here are some reminders and takeaways from today's episode: We cannot change the people around us. We can get clear on our values and communicate with others in a way that makes us feel good. We are more than our bodies. We are more than our current situation. Setting boundaries with other people is healthy and can help us get to where we want to go. We are responsible for protecting our peace and making space for growth. Our values will change and it's okay to change even though it makes us and the people around us uncomfortable. We can lead by example and encourage others to grow too. We encourage you to reflect on these reminders and get clear on what your current values are. If you find this episode valuable, please share it with a friend. Your support helps our show grow and for that, we are extremely grateful!
