Geri Jewell shares her trailblazing career as the first actress with cerebral palsy to break into mainstream television. From her early stand-up days at The Comedy Store to her iconic roles on The Facts of Life and HBO's Deadwood, Geri reflects on the challenges and triumphs of her journey. She opens up about her influential friendship with Carol Burnett, the unforgettable moment she was cast by Norman Lear, and the humorous yet impactful experiences that shaped her career. Her stories offer a mix of inspiration, humor, and behind-the-scenes insights into breaking barriers in Hollywood.   Episode Highlights: Comedy Roots: Geri recounts her journey into stand-up comedy, starting at the famous Comedy Store in 1978. From her struggles with early performances to becoming the first comedian with cerebral palsy to appear on national television, Geri's resilience shines through. Her candid reflection on bombing her second week at the Comedy Store—and what she learned from it—provides both humor and wisdom. Carol Burnett's Influence: One of the highlights of Geri's youth was becoming pen pals with her idol, Carol Burnett. Carol's words of encouragement inspired Geri to pursue her dreams in show business, despite the societal expectations placed on her due to her disability. Geri shares heartwarming memories of Carol's support and how it fueled her ambition. Meeting Norman Lear: A pivotal moment in Geri's career came when Norman Lear spotted her performance and immediately cast her as Cousin Geri on The Facts of Life. Geri recounts the whirlwind experience of joining the cast, humanizing the snobby Blair Warner, and the impact of being one of the first actresses with a visible disability on a major TV show. Decapitating Big Bird: In one of the funniest moments of the episode, Geri shares a story about her guest appearance on Sesame Street, where an unexpected accident involving roller skates and Big Bird left children screaming! Geri's retelling of how she managed to “decapitate” Big Bird during a live taping is guaranteed to leave you laughing. From Stand-Up to Deadwood: Geri takes us through her transition from sitcoms to the gritty world of HBO's Deadwood. A chance encounter with David Milch in a pharmacy led to her role as Jewel, a character created specifically for her. Geri's reflections on working with Ian McShane and the unique challenges of performing in such a raw, historical setting are captivating. New Book – Geri's Gems and Jewels: Geri discusses the inspiration behind her new book, a collection of essays and stories drawn from her life and career. The book combines humor and poignant reflections, with a special foreword from her dear friend, Norman Lear.   Filled with laugh-out-loud moments, touching memories, and incredible career insights, this episode is a masterclass in resilience, humor, and the power of breaking barriers.   You're going to love my conversation with Geri Jewell Geri's Website IMDB Get an autographed book   Follow Jeff Dwoskin (host): Jeff Dwoskin on Twitter The Jeff Dwoskin Show podcast on Twitter Podcast website Podcast on Instagram Join my mailing list Subscribe to my Youtube channel (watch Crossing the Streams!) She's also really gay in the tradition of Jo from The Facts of Life, and not only because Leanna Creel, the actress who played Tori, came out in real life. Erin Fletcher returns to explain why she's actually a better match for Zack than Kelly or AC Slater… because Zack Morris is the Blair Warner of Saved by the Bell. For those of us growing up in the 1980s, and our parents as well, The Facts of Life was simply must-see TV. The coming of age story of four girls at a boarding school, under the care of watchful housemother Mrs. Garrett, warmed our hearts and our television screens. Who can forget preppy, glamorous Blair Warner, brought to life for nine seasons by actress Lisa Whelchel? Lisa, a committed Christian from the age of 10, has gone on to have quite the journey over the decades, from marrying (and later divorcing) a pastor, to writing a number of Christian-themed books on family and parenthood. But it was her season on Survivor in 2012 that seems to have sparked a personal growth journey for the ages! Alicia has the details. Lucy gets fed to a dragon) Perfect Strangers, "Aliens" (a.k.a. Balki is an alien) The Facts of Life, "Seven Little Indians" (a.k.a. the Twilight Zone parody) A Family Matters, "Stevil" (a.k.a. Steve Urkel gets a murderous puppet doppelganger) Benson, "Death in a Funny Position" (a.k.a. serial killer cruise ship) Day By Day, "A Very Brady Episode" (a.k.a. a very strange venture into Brady Bunch land) Two Guys a Girl and a Pizza Place, "Two Guys a Girl and a Psycho Halloween" (a.k.a. Ryan Reynolds murders everyone) Punky Brewster, "The Perils of Punky" (a.k.a. the cave of horrors) The Cosby Show, "Cliff's Nightmare" (a.k.a. Cliff Huxtable vs. Muppets) Here are the details on this Facts of LIfe episode: “Seven Little Indians” (January 3, 1987) It would be ambitious for any sitcom, much less Facts of Life specifically, to attempt a weird episode that not only satirizes 1980s slasher movies but also murder mysteries and also The Twilight Zone. For all that being packed into one 22-minute format, this one actually works pretty well. Lisa Whelchel as Blair — big-haired, wild eyed and caked with makeup — makes for a striking visual that probably traumatized a few kids back in the day. My podcast episodes aren't usually very newsworthy or timely but this week is an exception. Just days after I recorded my interview with Mindy Cohn, news broke about the very thing we discussed-a Facts of Life reboot or reunion.  It wasn't the main reason why I wanted to interview her but it came up in our conversation and what she told me was surprising. Apparently Leonardo DiCaprio and Jessica Biel's production companies have bought the rights to The Facts of Life. Mindy tells us exactly what happened when she and a prominent producer had the idea to reboot the show and took it to Sony. Days later, the rights to TFOL were no longer available and had been snatched up by Leo and Jessica.  She explains it fully in this episode so it's definitely worth a listen to hear for yourself. People say I look a lot like Mindy. What do you think? Mindy and I met at the BGG Acting Studio several years ago and I was immediately drawn to her. Not just because people have compared me to her, several times, but because she's a natural mentor. She tells me that's because she was mentored by legends in the business and feels compelled to return the kindness. CREDIT: NBC-TV/KOBAL/REX/SHUTTERSTOCK One of her mentors was Charlotte Rae, who not only pushed for Mindy to get the part of Natalie on The Facts of Life, but took her under her wing as she came of age in Hollywood. Charlotte Rae passed away on Sunday, August 5th. We recorded this episode several days before which is why Mindy still talks as if she's alive. It's clear Charlotte Rae's legacy will live on through actors like Mindy, and so on and so on. THE FACTS OF LIFE -- Pictured: (l-r) Nancy McKeon as Joanne 'Jo' Polniaczek, Kim Fields as Dorothy 'Tootie' Ramsey, Lisa Whelchel as Blair Warner, Mindy Cohn as Natalie Green, Charlotte Rae as Edna Garrett -- Photo by: NBC/NBCU Photo Bank In addition, we also talked about why she still takes acting classes, her secret to longevity in this fickle industry, and where her heart is now. It's in a charity called Heifer International, an organization that works to end poverty around the world by empowering women and teaching sustainable farming. They have a big fundraiser coming up in October on the backlot of Universal Studios. To find out more information about the event and how you can help, visit www.heifer.org/LA. When I talk to Mindy I'm reminded of why I love this business. There are actors out there who aren't just trying to be famous. They have a love for the craft, and are a part of something that sometimes feels unattainable to me. I often feel like an outsider looking into the cool kids of Hollywood, just hoping someone will invite me in to the party. So until that happens, I'm going to keep gleaning all the wisdom I can from those willing to share, and then make my own party. To hear the rest of my interview with Mindy Cohn, download and subscribe to MIH podcast on iTunes. Don't forget to leave a review.
