Thoughts on sports and trash-talking in real-life (Muhammad Ali) or a football field, to the movies (Apollo Creed) to even comedy actors in wrestling like Andy Kaufman. How trash-talking is used as an effective form of intimidation in life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUh1XBeW0zw Transcription Does trash-talking work? Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live. Today I wanted to talk about this, is kind of a second in the series that we're doing, having to do with manipulation through marketing, and just a general manipulation to human beings. It just happens. It's automatic and understanding these elements of human behavior, allows you to communicate with people better in your marketing, and also to not fall into a lot of the traps that people tend to fall into. When you're dealing with trying to get people to do what you want them to do, which is what really what marketing and sales are about. You're trying to encourage people to do a certain thing. And hopefully, it's a good thing. But it makes no difference whether it's a good thing or a bad thing, the same principles in place. And so what I'm going to talk about is trash-talking. Trash-talking and sports is a model for something. It's a model for intimidation. It's a model for getting attention. It's a model for outrageousness. It happens on so many different levels with humans, but sports is just an obvious place. And one of the most obvious places I've got a book here I've shown it before. This is a really good book by Bob Zmuda, on Andy Kaufman. Andy Kaufman was a comedian in the 70s and 80s, who really got into he always enjoyed the theatrical of the whole thing, and was very much a well, very much a performance artist. He would enjoy professional wrestling before professional wrestling really went mainstream in the 80s and 90s. And he got into the trash-talk persona, and able to really put it out there. It's what wrestling is professional wrestling is known for American professional wrestling is known for you would not have really, I don't know, maybe a third or a half of the entire performance that happens is this back and forth trash-talking, which is just intimidation, outrageousness, making outrageous statements, and you see it in the most extreme form there. But you also see it on a level of professional sports, when we're talking about Muhammad Ali, one of the best trash-talkers of all time, in terms of just saying these outrageous statements about how great he was about how he was going to destroy the other person. In an almost poetic way, he would get away with this outrageous talk. And people loved it, they enjoy it, they love hearing it, they know it's partially a game, it's partially just a process. But at the same time, there's an intimidation factor that happens. So when I played football in high school, the same thing would occur, you'd have some guy on the other side of the field, and I was aligned. You'd have some guy on the other side, just saying the most outrageous things about your mother and everything else, just to intimidate just to get you to react. This is what we talked a lot about yesterday about that reaction factor, there has to be a reaction at some point. Either you're reacting to them, or they're reacting to you or you're able to stand outside of that game, and not play it. But there tends to be a reaction back and forth. The person that is reacting, is losing to the person that is causing the reaction to happen, which is provoking the reaction. And so that's what you see in professional sports over and over again. You see it even to the point that it bleeds over into entertainment, in terms of you know, the Rocky movies, every person Rocky's ever been against has been a provoker you know, the Apollo Creed and, you know, Mr. T's character and all the rest. They're all these outrageous trying to get the other person's goat so to speak.
A film about the life of Andy Kaufman while also being a film about Jim Carrey losing his mind. Kyle just wants to stay meta. Dave refuses to even look at the fourth wall. The Machine wishes it could dress up as Elvis.

Was Jim Carrey a straight narcissist or experiencing something....supernatural? Pappy, Stevie, Josh, Brett Kelly and Brother Demojordan discuss this documentary about method acting on the set of Man on the Moon (1999) Netflix Original full title: "Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond - Featuring a Very Special, Contractually Obligated Mention of Tony Clifton" ******** A behind-the-scenes look at how Jim Carrey adopted the persona of idiosyncratic comedian Andy Kaufman on the set of Man on the Moon (1999). Director Chris Smith's fascinating deep dive into actor Jim Carrey's time spent portraying famed and complicated comedian Andy Kaufman. Using approximately 100 hours of footage shot on the set of Man on the Moon documenting Carrey's transformation into Kaufman for four months. Jim Carrey earned critical acclaim and a Golden Globe for the performance, but many of the production's most Kaufmanesque moments played out behind the scenes, thankfully captured on video by Andy's former girlfriend, Lynne Margulies and former writing partner, Bob Zmuda. In Jim & Andy, Carrey looks back at the resulting footage 18 years later, reflecting on how he and Andy came up in oddly parallel universes, his experience channelling Andy and Tony and more broadly the spiritual journey of his career.

This week trash cinema aficionado Matt Carman (I Love Bad Movies) joins me for a special episode I'm calling "(Bad) Movies My Friends Have Never Seen." Will Matt survive watching the notorious Stallone/Travolta joint Staying Alive for the first time? Matt and I ponder whether Tony Manero is the worst character in popular fiction and try to make sense of his starring turn in the insane Broadway extravaganza Satan's Alley. Plus Matt shares his thoughts on the difference between a "good/bad" and "bad/bad" movie and we spot a Miami Vice homage a year before the debut of Miami Vice. Freaky! Check out I Love Bad Movies, the zine that Matt does with his wife Kseniya Yarosh of the Bonnie and Maude podcast. Brooklynites will also want to check out the Brooklyn Zine Fest which they organize every year. Like Movies My Friends Have Never Seen on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. You can also get the show on iTunes and Stitcher. A taste of Satan's Alley. Bob Zmuda's stories about Saturday Night Fever/Staying Alive screenwriter Norman Wexler are insane.
Writer, comedian and producer Bob Zmuda has had a busy career, performing, writing and producing comedy specials, co-creating the charity Comic Relief and collaborating with the late (??) great comedian/performance artist Andy Kaufman. Gilbert and Frank rang up Bob at his house in Lake Tahoe to talk about (among other things) his early days as half of the comedy duo Albrecht & Zmuda, his role in bringing the Kaufman biopic "Man on the Moon" to the screen, his controversial new book about Andy's life, and his theory of how his old friend and collaborator pulled off the greatest hoax in comedy history. Also, Eddie Murphy takes a phone call, Tony Clifton (or was it Jim Carrey?) invades the Playboy mansion and Garth Brooks (almost) portrays Bob on the big screen. PLUS: The ventriloquist team of Dick & Stinky! Andy gets a woody! Larry the Lobster gets a reprieve! Gilbert gets the axe at SNL! And a surprise guest crashes the podcast! Ah. Back to an all-clip episode of Succotash, your Comedy Podcast Podcast. We have a cornucopia of clippage for this time around. Mostly new faces or, rather, voices, but some old faves, too. Purposely not clipping any of the "big" shows this time around. I’m talking the shows that get most of the attention from the media and, as a result, keep cropping up at the top of the heap on iTunes, Stitcher, etc. There are a lot of comedy podcasts out there that get short shrift, little notice or just plain ignored. Succotash has been making an effort to beat the bushes for the harder to find podcasts and, if YOU’RE a comedy podcaster and want to get a clip on Succotash, just email us a 3 to 5 minute MP3 snippet from your show! Send it to clips@SuccotashShow.com. I wanted to share a video with you from Frank Cronin, our Irish correspondent. He's finished his summer foray in America and is back on the Emerald Isle - Galway City, to be exact - where he's looking to finish up a college degree. His international travels the past few years have left him a little bereft of ready cash, however, and for the short haul, he's looking for a place near the university to camp until he gets his rent money together. Take a look... All right - let's get to the rundown for the latest episode. Here's what's on tap... I Am IdiotWe’ve featured I Am Idiot with Ben, Howard and Keith from Britain before. This clip - featuring a prank phone call from Howard where he's been challenged to mention the title to every Mel Gibson movie in the course of the conversation - is longer than we usually play. But this one was pretty entertaining so I made an exception. Moment Of ClarityLee Camp is a comedian with an activist bent. He's very active in the Occupy movement. And his podcast, Moment Of Clarity, has 158 episodes or so, meaning he’s got this thing down. Interviews, guest, rants. It’s a pretty heady and often revolutionary blend he offers. Sweet Feathery JesusSFJ is a cross-country, trans-Atlantic affair, with hosts Belasco, Dr. P and Booze in Texas, North Carolina and England, respectively. Some listeners seem to think that Belasco and I sound alike. Not sure about that, but the trio of them are interesting guys, sitting around on the internet, talking. SpoodcastThe teaser for Spoodcast on their homesite reads: “Two Americans, One Canadian, and one American living in Canada walk into a bar. There’s no punchline. That’s the Spoodcast.” One of the co-hosts (and executive producer) is Matthew Dean. Another dude is named Joel. No idea who the other fellows are - more info on the website, guys! Dr. Matt Matthew Dean (see above) also produces and stars in Dr. Matt. This unlicensed head shrinker bills himself as “half Dr. Phil, half Stephen colbert and half Dalai Lama." Ever since our favorite Dr. Feelgood Bob Ducca and his Affirmation Nation went silent back in February, podcasting has needed a self-help guru. Could Dr. Matt be the answer? Maybe so… Combat Radio We played a clip from Combat Radio two episodes ago when Phil Leirness was our guest co-host. I asked Sargent-At-Arms Ethan Dettenmaier for another little taste of the show and he shot us over a short blast with Captain Cool Billy Dee Williams. The Brit & The AmericanThomas Moore and Alba Lewis over at The Brit and The American were so tickled that we played their clip that they recorded a special little thank you in the course of their podcast. I was tickled about that that I'm playing it in this episode. From Out Of Nowhere (aka FOON)We play a first clip from the From Out Of Nowhere podcast — or FOONcast — with hosts Rob Kern and Eric Furniss. It's a music and comedy-oriented show, with lots of guests, such as Marc Maron and Marshall Crenshaw. This clip features the guys’ visit with Blue Oyster Cult singer/guitarist Eric Bloom, and they ask him about the infamous SNL “more cowbell” sketch. Remasculate Comedian Steve "Mudflap" McGrew has been featured on Comedy Central and other TV venues. Now he’s fired up a podcast called Remasculate, featuring various guests including his wife. In this sample, Steve comments on a news article about the Top 10 Hated jobs in America. Proudly Resents We’ve featured Adam Spiegelman before and with good reason: He gets some kickass guests. This time around he chats with Tony Clifton, the sometimes alter ego of late comedian Andy Kaufman and sometimes alter ego of Bob Zmuda. This clip has a great untold Jim Carrey tale. We close out this edition in the usual fashion, with a visit by raging moderate political comedian Will Durst, this time giving us his take on the recently-wrapped Republican National Convention. Until next time, please remember to pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
Starting off part two of Comical Radio Classic was Bobby Slayton, who unexpectedly showed up, guns blazing, ready to insult everybody. Business as usual for the least adorable 'pit bull' there ever was. If you don't understand the reference, just Bing it! Just kidding. Who uses that, anyway??? Following Bobby's tirade was a calm, cool, and collected call-in from Bob Zmuda, Andy Kaufman's co-conspirator and creator of Comic Relief. Zmuda "Revealed!" (another reference, sorry, I'll stop) that he wanted Nicolas Cage to play his best friend in "Man on the Moon." Mr. Ghost Rider himself! Jim Carrey snatched the role, however, after a genius audition tape. Zmuda also talked with the crew about Mr. X, a screenwriter mentioned in the Kaufman book who would make people do crazy things for money. The revelation was slightly underwhelming, considering that it was actually divulged 11 years ago. Man, where have we been? On the moon? The multitalented Dante Nero stopped by, and the gang chatted with him about his numerous pastimes and occupations. They include: Being a comedian, male stripping, riding a unicycle, doing mixed martial arts, fencing, splitting cables, and on and on and on. Chris mentioned to Dante "Jack of All Trades" Nero that he had snake eye tattoos "down there." Would that increase Chris' chances of becoming a male stripper himself? No, and that probably means that Chris won't get work because he's wearing a scarf either. If you made it this far, good for you! Milk and cookies for everyone! (Google that reference, too.)
Adding fuel to the fire of the last episode, Danny brings in close friend and recovering heroin addict George in an attempt to get Kasten to lay off the smack. George tells tales of being incarcerated, stealing bikes to avoid $2 fares and finally recovering after a long uphill battle. The Battle for Kasten’s sobriety will continue until the hosts finally win. Late bloomer stand-up comedian John Kawie is alive and kicking after suffering a stroke that couldn’t keep him down. He sufficiently scared hypochondriacs Myka and Danny after talking about how sudden his stroke came on. To make the conversation even lighter, the hosts reminisced about a dead comedy club booker with Kawie. Let's just say this interview was a little on the morbid side. Dan Fishback, a gay and Jewish musician/motivational speaker/life coach attempts to set the crew straight and make their lives all a bit easier. He was the first person in Comical Radio history to agree that living in your grandmother’s basement is a-okay. Chris was finally vindicated after years of mockery from the crew. Crew: 2,370. Chris: 1! And that was it for part one folks! Make sure to download part two next week where we talk to Andy Kaufman’s co-conspirator Bob Zmuda, former male stripper/fencer/unicyclist/mixed martial artist AND comedian Dante Nero with a random drop in from Bobby Slayton.
