This week, Travolta returns to the fold.... in a good movie this time?! Nathan and Clint break down two tales of violence and revenge, both throwbacks in their own way: one to the spaghetti Westerns of the '60s and '70s, the other to, I guess, Deadfall? First up is Arsenal, a chintzy DTV Cage vehicle with a twist: this time, apropos of nothing, he's reprising his over-the-top role as mustachioed drug kingpin Eddie King from his brother Christopher Coppola's chintzy 1993 thriller Deadfall. Once again, he's paired with a bland lead (Adrian Grenier, whose face makes you always wonder whether the movie you're watching is a fake Vincent Chase joint) in a disjointed, overly-stylized tale of brothers pitted against each other in a battle for their own souls. But this time, with a lot more snot-nosed Cage weeping every single line in a Tony Clifton wig.  Fret not, though, for sunrise is just over the horizon in Ti West's slick, darkly funny Western pastiche In a Valley of Violence. Taking the same arch approach he takes to horror homages like House of the Devil and X, West follows a lonely man (Ethan Hawke) running from a violent past with little but his trusty pup by his side. But when tragedy befalls him (two guesses as to what happens to that dog), Hawke goes full Western John Wick on the cocky gunslinger failson (James Ransone) of the eminently pragmatic town marshal (John Travolta, mutton-chopped and delightful).  Pledge to our Patreon at patreon.com/travoltacage Follow us on Twitter @travoltacage Email us questions at travoltacagepod@gmail.com Podcast theme by Jon Biegen Podcast logo by Felipe Sobreiro

What Was Real? Andy Kaufman, Latka Gravas, Tony Clifton, & Jim Carrey On this week's episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos, Mr. Chavez & I look at the life and career of Andy Kaufman. Kaufman was always a polarizing figure in the world of comedy and entertainment. A challenging artist, constantly at odds with his audiences, Kaufman was responsible for some of the most controversial "crowd stunts" in late 70s and early 80s entertainment. From network specials designed to confuse and trick audiences, through his ambivalence in playing Latka Gravas on the sitcom Taxi (1978-83), berating and wrestling women, and his alter-ego - the obnoxious Vegas lounge singer - Tony Clifton, Kaufman has been heralded as a genius and "ahead of his time" and also a spoiled Hollywood star. This week Ibrahim and I discuss Milos Forman's 1999 biopic Man on the Moon, featuring a Golden Globe winning performance from Jim Carrey and the 2017 documentary on the making of the film, Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond. It's an intersting conversation on the trappings of stardom and the responsibility of the artist.  Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many Thanks.

Thrilled to be joined again by pop culture historian and author Richard F. Brown to do the definitive 'Taxi' total rewatch and episode. We get into the mysterious beauty and melancholy of Bob James' 'Taxi' theme song 'Angela', and the temporary filmed open that became so identified with the ennui and thwarted ambitions of the beloved cabbies of the Sunshine Cab Co. We discuss all the characters and the actors who played them: Latka and Andy Kaufman, Danny DeVito and Louie, Marilu Henner and Elaine, Judd Hirsch and Alex, Christopher Lloyd and Reverend Jim Ignatowski, Tony Danza and Tony Banta, Jeff Conaway (RIP) and Bobby, Carol Kane as Simka, and more. 'Taxi' is one of the most interesting sitcoms in television history because of the originality of its approach to filming with four cameras instead of the sitcom-traditional 3 cameras. This allowed director Jim Burrows to capture what he calls the essential surprise of comedy being performed live in front of a studio audience. Any discussion of 'Taxi' offers the best opportunity we have to discuss Andy Kauffman and his unique and often challenging approach to comedy and performance art in everyday life. We cover his outstanding and long-shelved 1977 TV special, which features one of the most amazing and little-discussed Andy Kauffman bits: a heartfelt and very real and emotional conversation he has with Howdy Doody, his childhood TV hero.  And we cover Andy's famous prank on the Taxi cast and brass through the casting of his alter ego Tony Clifton, and Tony Clifton's firing and subsequent massive scene on the soundstage involving security guards and several extremely pissed off producers and actors. This is an episode that will hopefully share with you some things you might not have known about 'Taxi' and afford us all the opportunity anew to appreciate the fact that this series uniquely brought us out of this world talents like Andy Kauffman, Christopher Llloyd, Danny DeVito, and Carol Kane in ONE SHOW. Any series would and could be built on having one of those dynamic talents in the cast; Taxi had all four. Unreal!

Since his arrival into the realm of celebrity, Andrew WK has been shrouded by mystery. Accusations that he was an industry plant, a tool of Scientology or even a government psy-op all center around the messianic man in white, but the biggest is that he may in fact be someone else entirely, or at least not himself. Some say WK was replaced in the early oughts for a more agreeable actor, later resurfacing under the alias Steev Mike. Steev Mike is a producer for WK, and is the Tony Clifton to WKs Andy Kaufman, an alias with more hatred for Andrew than he has proof of his own existence. Mike has played foil to WK as well as helped him produce his greatest albums, but who is he? Find out today as we take a deep dive into the industry plant iceberg.

Nearly forty years after his death, Andy Kaufman's work continues to defy easy categorization. Man on the Moon (1999) presents a man obsessed with the long con, the prank, the happening, the song-and-dance. Carrey as Kaufman is constantly toying with reality, perception, and the insidious ways in which the fourth wall is merely a construct of a complacent consumer society…Jim Carrey famously lost himself in the role - and this week, Phil and Tom lose themselves in a movie that has more to say about Donald Trump's post-truth reality than we'd like to admit.Take a heel turn on this episode of the Progressive Pop Podcast.Man on the Moon is a 1999 biographical comedy-drama film about the late American entertainer Andy Kaufman, starring Jim Carrey, Danny DeVito, Courtney Love, and Paul Giamatti. Directed by Miloš Forman, the film pays particular attention to the various inside jokes, scams, put-ons, and happenings for which Kaufman was famous, most significantly his long-running "feud" with wrestler Jerry "The King" Lawler and his portrayal of the character of bawdy lounge singer Tony Clifton. I'm your host, Gem Kennedy. My pronouns are they/them and I'm a transformational practitioner and coach living in the UK. Hi everyone! Welcome to Series 2 of Queers & Co. I'm so excited to be back and to be able to share all of my brilliant guests with you. I've got 13 guests for this coming series and I've recorded about half of the episodes so far. And honestly, I can't wait to put them all out. I hope you're going to get lots from them and find them interesting, insightful, and maybe share them with anyone that you think might be interested in hearing what my guests have to say as well. The world is in a pretty different place now from when I recorded the first series in 2020. So I think the last couple of episodes, we'd just gone into lockdown in March 2020 and now here we are in January 2021. The UK has just entered another lockdown. I hope you're all keeping safe and well, no matter where in the world you are. It felt really meaningful to me to have this guest as my first guest for the second series. I first spoke to them two years ago when I was just starting out with the Queers & Co. project and I interviewed them to find out about their relationship with their body. And since then we have crossed paths multiple times and I just think they are brilliant so I'm really excited to be able to share the interview with you. They are an awesome artist, a performer, a space maker and if you are in need of any kind of cheering up or cool activities to do online, then I'd highly recommend that you check out their work. We talk a bit about that during the episode, but you'll also be able to find out more in the shownotes and I'll point you in the right direction at the end of the episode. As always, if you enjoy hearing from my guests, please do let them know. It's really nice for them to just know that people out there are listening and that they appreciate what they have to say. And if you'd like to continue the conversation about any of the episodes, please do join...

We look at how a comedy icon took on the role of a comedy icon, and almost lost himself, and lost a few friends along the way. We analyze the behind the scenes antics and see if the man we see on screen is ACTUALLY Andy Kaufman, or just the image that we are meant to believe. We look at how wrestling legend Jerry “The King” Lawler took to Carry's portrayal, and how a wad of spit almost sent Carry to the hospital. We discuss the role of Courtney Love, and how one of the 90's most controversial people, was on such good behavior, that she stayed away from the insanity. That plus discussions on Taxi, 80's SNL, an obligatory mention of Tony Clifton, and we discuss the ultimate Kaufman question: Did he fake his own death?   Also we discuss the inner workings and staff of a “Bahamian” based Burger King, and a reminder TO STAY INDOORS AND WASH YOUR DAMN HANDS!!!   Be sure to subscribe to the Because Maybe Network for latest episodes of our podcasts, and our video game series!
