It's our last episode of the year! So, as usual, we're revealing our BOFCA ballots as we discuss our respective Top 10 Films of 2022! Unfortunately, Dave couldn't make it this week, but we still share his top 10 before digging into each of our own. You can hear Dave's list starting at 2:55, Megan's at 14:36, and Evan's at 47:39. And in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we're talking about the winner of our NYE movie poll, Rob Reiner and Nora Ephron's 1989 rom-com, WHEN HARRY MET SALLY!
John and Max are celebrating the 20th Anniversary of The Fellowship of the Ring with an episode dedicated to the movie. Lots to cover on this week's show as award season races toward the finish line for BOFCA! First up, we hear from Dave who calls in with his thoughts on BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS (2:00). Then Kris makes a hard case for SUPPORT THE GIRLS (8:25), which was a hit on the festival circuit but ought to be way more widely seen. Evan then walks us through MONSTERS AND MEN (19:07), a pretty good take on a story that has nonetheless been covered in more interesting and absorbing ways by other films this year. Kris saw BATHTUBS OVER BROADWAY (28:56), a delightful story about one of the oddest phenomena in American entertainment: the industrial musical. Evan saw INCREDIBLES 2 (35:23) -- surprise surprise, it's good -- and Kris wraps things up with MORTAL ENGINES (41:57) -- surprise surprise, it's not.
This week, we're joined by BOFCA member and Hollywood Reporter contributor Robyn Bahr! She and Evan kick things off with GREEN BOOK (4:06), a not-terrible but treacly and episodic look at racial tension containing nothing new (especially in a year with so many strong offerings tackling the same material). Then, Kris and Evan examine SUSPIRIA (15:24) and marvel at how not-fun they managed to make dance-school witches by bogging things down with extraneous characters and a go-nowhere sideplot. Then it's ASSASSINATION NATION (34:52), a powerhouse of a film with style to spare that'll leave you energized and hopefully optimistic. Last up, the crew is divided on VOX LUX (42:06), a brutal examination of what it means to be a pop star in the world we currently inhabit. Is it good? Listen to find out!

Tim, a former professional ice skater and current news/film reporter-type, brings a unique perspective to the discussion and offers some insight on the real Harding’s skills. Then the guys get into STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI (38:12). Yes, we give everything away (like always), but THE LAST JEDI is so much fun no spoilers could actually spoil it.

Dave had to look after Baby Henry, so BOFCA critic Greg Vellante joins Evan and Kris for this week’s episode. After a brief game of “Get to Know Your Guest Host,” Greg leads off with BEFORE I FALL (at 7:30), the teenybopper version of GROUNDHOG DAY, which he finds forgettable despite its heart. Next Kris discusses TABLE 19 (15:04), a wedding comedy about nothing in particular that he dubs “stay together porn” for its terrible plot involving couples staying together that shouldn’t. After that, Evan and Greg rave about MY LIFE AS A ZUCCHINI (at 29:42), the touching Oscar-nominated animated film about a group of orphans who form a family. Finally, Greg fully loses his Spoilerpiece virginity by spoiling the heck out of LOGAN (at 42:06), the Wolverine movie that he describes as entertaining, unexpectedly moving, and extremely violent.

Pee talk takes an unexpected, yet movie-related turn at the start of this week’s episode. Once the guys dispense with their bathroom discussion, they move on to the Boston Online Film Critics Association’s yearly awards, which were recently announced to the public. The guys quickly walk through their ballots (at 4:37), mentioning their favorite films that didn’t win, exploring the nuances of their votes, and teasing movies like FENCES that they look forward to discussing in future episodes. After the awards excitement, Kris reviews COLLATERAL BEAUTY (at 28:00), a picture that sounds like an emo side project, where the filmmakers couldn’t decide between making an awards movie or a Christmas movie, so they made both and got something awful. With that out of the way, Dave and Evan take on this week’s big release, ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY (at 44:00), a prequel that doesn’t have much in common with other entries in the STAR WARS franchise. It has a diverse cast of skilled actors, deaths with weight, and a director that cares about framing shots, however Dave and Evan don’t think it deserves the hype from critics.

Dave is back from sick leave to share his unique take on a classic lullaby. Then Evan and Kris jump into reviewing Ron Howard’s IN THE HEART OF THE SEA, or IN THE FART OF THE SEA, as Dave calls it. The film stars the Greater Hemsworth (Chris) and Brendan Gleeson, but not Dave’s favorite actor Ray Winstone. It’s a movie about a sperm whale that kills seamen, and yes the guys milk that fact for all the laughs it’s worth. They also don’t shy away from making CABIN BOY references whenever possible. Probably the biggest surprise is how much Evan and Kris disagree about it. Their conversation veers into a tangent about Ron Howard films, before all three guys get into this year’s Boston Online Film Critics Association (BOFCA) awards. The three of them share their top 10 lists, and delve into some of the categories where they had completely different items in their ballots like Best Foreign Film and Best Documentary. Highlights include PEACE OFFICER, FINDERS KEEPERS, STRAY DOG, and JAFAR PANAHI’S TAXI. Before they sign off, the guys have a few words of appreciation for the marketers giving BOFCA’s awards some attention, and a few choice words for the organization’s critics.

You know when I begin a Crizzlecast singing the Gap Band's "Yearning for Your Love," you know it's gonna be a good episode. And that's exactly what I did when I spoke to today's guest, Monica Castillo. Another film critic from the Boston area, I talk to the lovely and vivacious Castillo about growing up seeing movies in Florida, her eventual move over to reviewing movies in Beantown and how she aided in launching the Boston Online Film Critics Association. We also get into her side hustle as -- a ballroom dance instructor! By the way, she also co-hosts this podcast that I've been on a couple of times. On Tuesday, I'll talk to the other host of that show.
