This week, we get into Theodore Rex; a film about a cookie-loving dinosaur with a heart of gold who needs to save the world from a new ice age because his creator has fish DNA that can freeze stuff, starring Whoppi Goldberg. We wish that the previous sentence didn't exist, but that's the most succinct way to break this movie down. If you want to know how bad this movie is, we need to gently remind you that this movie cost over $30 million in 1990s money and saw a direct-to-video release. Truly baffling. Here's the rub: Dinosaur detective devours desserts, discovers a dinoside, and defeats delinquent dicks! Worst Movie welcomes back world-ending genocide! T-Rex trash receptacle transport! Untamed tail tappin' tooshies! Scalebacks! Hardbody Bob! Ninja Grids! Imagine a T-Rex with huge tits! Whoopi “the fart incarnate” Goldberg steaming herself drippy! Kane's nevermind nuke button! Theodore's jizz jalopy! Dead dino skank wife, and much, much more on this week's episode of The Worst Movie Ever Made! www.theworstmovieevermade.com

Edmund Morris, in his book Theodore Rex, wrote the following about President Theodore Roosevelt and his wife, Edith (p.451). “Teddy Roosevelt's attitude toward Edith — beyond the fact that they personified every syllable of the marriage vow — as one of dog-like adoration he looked to her for porch company, for approving pats and hugs, and sometimes, guiltily, for discipline when he had done something wrong. She could bring him up short, during one of his indiscreet monologues, by giving off a special quietness that he could sense within seconds. Roosevelt often outraged her sense of propriety. ‘You only have...Article Link

Guest Yani Bellini Saibene Panelist Richard Littauer Show Notes In this episode of Sustain, host Richard welcomes guest Yani Bellini Saibene from Argentina. Yani, with a rich background in open source community management, shares her journey into the tech and open source world, and highlights her roles as the rOpenSci Community Manager, R-Ladies Project Lead, and Vice President for the Board of Directors for The Carpentries. The discussion dives into the challenges of funding, sustainability of volunteer-based models, and the importance of including diverse voices in open source development. The conversation also explores the economic disparities and cultural differences affecting contributors form the global south and how building strong local communities can empower individuals by providing them with tools, knowledge, and a sense of belonging in the wider world. Press download to hear more! [00:01:47] Yani describes her start as a researcher at INTA while at university, her degree in computer science, and her initial work developing software and teaching scientists to use computing tools. She also details her career progression and her master thesis at INTA. [00:04:49] We hear about the foundation and global expansion of R-Ladies, as Yani emphasizes community strength and the organizers' passion. She discusses the flexibility and inclusivity of the chapters, and the support and resources shared among the community. [00:08:56] Richard questions about the distinct roles and activities between rOpenSci, R-Ladies, and The Carpentries, which appear to have similar goals in teaching R, and Yani explains the different objectives of the three organizations. [00:12:50] Yani lists the funders, including the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Sloan Foundation, and others. She describes the funding models for R-Ladies and Carpentries and the challenges of sustaining such community-oriented projects. [00:14:52] Richard inquires about the role of the board of directors in establishing post-grant funding. Yani explains The Carpentries' membership model where institutions pay for benefits like workshops and instructor training, she mentions the perks for members, discusses the challenges of maintaining services without sufficient membership or grants, and highlights cultural and financial barriers in Latin America. [00:20:17] Richard is curious about cultural barriers and asks for further insights into overcoming cultural barriers and the limitations of translations. Yani discusses her personal journey with the English language and its importance in coding beyond syntax and shares some data from a recent study that was done, and the paper is called, “The manifold costs of being a non-native English speaker in science,” from PLOS Biology. [00:24:42] Yani discusses additional studies, mentioning the Linux Foundation report on English as a barrier in open source contribution and its influence on perceived expertise. [00:25:55] Richard asks Yani about the point at which translation efforts start to yield benefits for the community and inquires about the visible impacts and dividends from investments in internationalizing materials. Yani cites examples of immediate benefits, and discusses her involvement in translating educational materials, which has supported teaching many Spanish speaking teachers. [00:32:38] Richard raises concerns about the possibility of global exploitation through talent extraction from non-English speaking regions. Yani addresses the issue of local versus international business compensation and the ethical implications for non-profit organizations. [00:36:30] We hear Richard's concerns about how to have conversations about open source contributions and community building in a non-extractive way and he wonders if it's feasible to collectively support open source maintainers financially. Yani explains the concept of three “currencies” in any job: money, heart, and brain. [00:39:16] Yani discusses the champions program at rOpenSci, where stipends were important for participants to allocate time to the tasks and do an excellent job. [00:41:05] Find out where you can follow Yani online. Quotes [00:06:17] “In R-Ladies, you have enough informality and enough expertise to make this a special place to learn.” [00:18:26] “There is little funding for maintaining what you already have.” [00:20:40] “I have to confess that I approached the English language because I loved code.” Spotlight [00:42:26] Richard's spotlight is a book he's reading called, Theodore Rex. [00:43:10] Yani's spotlight is a friend and someone she works with at R-Ladies, Athanasia Mo Mowinckel. The never fully told story of Theodore Roosevelt's world-changing terms as U.S. President.
Note: This episode originally aired on April 24, 2015. -- This week, YSM tackles the truly bizarre buddy cop/talking dinosaur movie Theodore Rex. Join us as we wonder whether writer/director Jonathan Betuel got an uncredited plot assist from his four-year-old nephew Tommy and whether Theodore Rex is the most annoying 90s “poochie” protagonist we've ever covered. In the near-future, human-sized dinosaurs have been brought back by an eccentric German scientist just to see if he can. Now, the scientist is planning to start another ice age in order to bring in a new society. In the wake of a dino-murder, police officer/publicity stunt diversity hire Theodore Rex is given permission to investigate, along with new partner Katie Coltrane (Goldberg), a tough cop with computer enhancements. Together, they deal with the evil scientist and his henchmen “Edge,” (Stephen McHattie), “Spinner,” (Bud Cort), and “The Toymaker” (Peter Kwong).
On this episode, Ren and Ginger discuss Alan Dershowitz, a fancy lawyer man known for defending the rich and famous and the devil's own personal advocate. Allegedly. Featuring stale takes, the copaganda masterpiece, Theodore Rex, and not one, but two, dramatic porn retellings. Citations at this fnguypod.com.

On September 3, 1902, Theodore Roosevelt was riding in a carriage in Pittsfield when it was struck by a trolley. His Secret Service bodyguard was killed, and Roosevelt himself narrowly escaped serious injury. This episode explores the causes of the accident, the subsequent investigations and criminal charges, and also looks at the possible long-term effects of this accident. If you are interested in learning more, the sources for this episode included Edmund Morris's biography Theodore Rex, along with a number of contemporary newspaper articles. Among the most helpful of these were the September 4, 5, and 6 issue of the Springfield Republican, and the September 4 issue of the Boston Globe. For our money, Whoopi Goldberg ranks as one of the greatest actresses of her generation. If you were born after a certain date, you might most know her as a host on The View, but she was breaking down walls and winning Oscars long before that. Her list of credits inspires awe. There's Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple, Ghost (she won the Oscar for that one), Sister Act, which was so good that it got a sequel, Jumping Jack Flash, and many more. Heck, she even made a more than credible action hero in the badass eighties flick Fatal Beauty. At the height of her fame, she made a risky move by going to TV and recurring on Star Trek: The Next Generation as Guinan, but she was a fan of the franchise and didn't care that she could get pigeonholed as a TV actress.Indeed, Whoopi was the best, and it's a shame that she's gotten fewer significant roles in movies in recent years, although she's reprising Guinan on Star Trek: Picard, and there are rumours of a Sister Act sequel happening on Disney Plus. Time will tell, but in the episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we celebrate a talent that's not one to shy away from controversy (a massive understatement if you watch The View) but remains an impeccable actress (even if she did do Theodore Rex);

Kaia talks to her friend Juliet Landau who grew up in the entertainment business but became successful all on her own (even in spite of the narcissists that surrounded her). She's a multi-hyphenate powerhouse: actress, director, writer and marketer- and now also an educator. She opens the kimono to reveal some of things she wish she would've known earlier in her career, and how she has navigated her success, as well as writing/directing, and starring in her new, groundbreaking film A PLACE AMONG THE DEAD. Juliet Landau is an actress, director, producer and writer. As an actress, highlights include her role as Drusilla on Joss Whedon's BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER & spin-off ANGEL and co-starring in Tim Burton's ED WOOD as Loretta King. Last season Juliet recurred in Amazon Prime Video's #1 television series, BOSCH, as Rita Tedesco. She's currently recurring as ‘Cordelia' on TNT's CLAWS. Juliet just helmed her visionary, feature film directorial debut, A PLACE AMONG THE DEAD which has been picked up for worldwide distribution by Modern Films. She co-wrote and stars in the venture. With Gary Oldman, Ron Perlman, Robert Patrick, Lance Henriksen, Joss Whedon and best-selling author Anne Rice, appearing for the first time in a movie. Also in the works and partially completed is THE UNDEAD SERIES. Think Jerry Seinfeld's COMEDIANS IN CARS GETTING COFFEE… This is VAMPIRES IN COFFINS GETTING BLOOD! … It's the only series ever to gather the A-list of the genre together. Every one of the talented artists in A PLACE AMONG THE DEAD came back to participate in her series, as did Tim Burton, Willem Dafoe and many other notables. Other acting work includes starring opposite Whoopi Goldberg in THEODORE REX as well as starring in over 20 other films, appearing in many more, guest-starring frequently on television, extensive voiceover work in features, tv, video games and garnering rave reviews for her roles in the theater. Juliet's previous directorial efforts include two short subjects. TAKE FLIGHT explored Gary Oldman's creative process and was produced by Gary. DREAM OUT LOUD featured interviews with Guillermo del Toro, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Rian Johnson. Both projects were produced with her husband Deverill Weekes under the Miss Juliet Productions banner. Landau co-wrote two issues of the ANGEL comic book for IDW. She is now penning the companion coffee table book to THE UNDEAD SERIES called BOOK OF THE UNDEAD. modernfilms.com/aplaceamongthedead Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Entertainment Business Wisdom. This movie is terrible. No surprise there. It is trying to be a million different things and failing at pretty much all of them except the Dino suit, which is Okay. No wonder they dumped this to home video and never even played it in a theatre.Hate Watching is the show that is watched by the few and hated only occasionally.#TheodoreRex #whoopiegoldberg

Les, Kurt, and Jason welcome back very good friend of the show Meredith Thomas back to talk about her latest project. Meredith is Lifetime Royalty at this point, so it's exciting that she's now making moves behind the camera as the Second Unit Director for Keeping up with the Joneses. Kurt has some Blac Chyna news that Meredith and all of us are trying to wrap our head around (Courage). Then it's time for Keeping up with the Joneses: The Wrong Nemesis (the first episode of season 2). Les schools everyone on great deployment of the soap trope “you never find a body.” There's a lot of references to the “Whoopi Goldberg did a movie with a dinosaur” film Theodore Rex. Plus, with an expanded hoodie budget, (somewhat surprisingly) no welding, and shady money exchanges that feel like selling something through Craigslist, this movie is the right catalyst to teach us that sexism even persists in the boys' club of ecoterrorists. Lesson learned: landladies can be spies, too. Facebook : lifetimeofhallmark Instagram : lifetimeofhallmarkpodcast Theme song generously donated by purple-planet.com
