Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains, with R&D Vintage 2023, from New Glarus Brewing. Guest host Jane picked this 1982 picture starring Diane Lane as a young woman dealt a series of devastating, life altering blows in a short amount of time. She takes her sister and cousin on the road with a couple bands and creates a movement. There's some great music from punk legends, who also play roles in the film. I paired it with a New Glarus award receiving sour, that is one hell of a good time.

This week the ghouls discuss one of film's greatest tough watches, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986). From wiki: “Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is a 1986 American psychological horror crime film directed and co-written by John McNaughton about the random crime spree of a serial killer who seemingly operates with impunity. It stars Michael Rooker in his debut as the nomadic killer Henry, Tom Towles as Otis, a prison buddy with whom Henry is living, and Tracy Arnold as Becky, Otis's sister. The characters of Henry and Otis are loosely based on convicted real-life serial killers Henry Lee Lucas and Ottis Toole.” But first! Drew Barrymore scabs, which is a bummer, but she apologized so she gets the Bloodhaus Seal of Approval. The hosts talk all about Hollywood unions, Drusilla goes to Vidiots to see Videodrome and they discuss which format is the appropriate one to watch the film. Josh watched Massacre at Central High (1976). Also discussed: Serial Mom, Cannibal Holocaust, Faces of Death, Salo: 120 Days of Sodom, Color Out of Space, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Happiness, Josh learns about the X rating, Karina Longworth, Marvel dialogue, Chicago, The Blues Brothers, Ladies and Gentlemen the Fabulous Stains, Kansas City Bomber, Slapshot, various serial killers, Streetwise, the morality of true crime, Ryan Murphy, and more! NEXT WEEK: Werner Herzog's Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) Website: http://www.bloodhauspod.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/Email: bloodhauspod@gmail.comDrusilla's art: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/Drusilla's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hydesister/ Drusilla's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/drew_phillips/Joshua's website: https://www.joshuaconkel.com/Joshua's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/Joshua's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/joshuaconkel

We're See Also and we don't put out!!To welcome 2023, Kate and Brodie are returning to the source: the proto-feminist punk classic, Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains. It's 1980 and a couple of punk bands roll into the steel town of Charlston, USA. In the audience are Corinne "Third Degree" Burns" (Diane Lane) and her sister Tracy (Marin Kantor), orphaned teens trying to make ends meet after their mum's death, and their cousin Jessica (Laura Dern). They yearn for a way out, for a way to better themselves. By the time the Metal Corpses and the Looters leave for their next tour, The Stains – the girls' band – has joined them as the support act. What happens next, the ignominious break-up of the Looters and the huge success of The Stains, was the feminist fantasy that, in real life, made the film a cult inspiration for the Riot Grrrl movement. Written by Nancy Dowd and directed by Lou Adler, Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains prove why every citizen should be given an electric guitar on her 16th birthday.See AlsosStainspage on Caroline Coon's website NPR's piece on the influence of the film on riot grrrl, featuring Alison Wolfe from Bratmobile, tied to the release of (ARP Hive!) The cursed year that was 2021 has come to an end and Lee felt like going out on a more positive note. In this mega-sized episode he's compiled a list of tracks from fictional bands and musical artists that have appeared in films. Lots of research went into this one, as Lee tries to give credit where credit is due to the people behind the fictional acts. Be it totally made up acts, parody acts that came before their film debuts, or if they actually formed later on in real life, Lee tries to cover a little of everything. This experimental slapstick comedy, that also features a young Dennis Quaid, is  strange entry into the annuls of cinema history. From working as a featured extra in Lou Adler's LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS (1982) and finding her calling in front of the camera… to becoming one of the hardest working actors in cult cinema over the next 40+ years… to the on-set accident that mangled 4 of her fingers down to the bone… to writing for publications like FANGORIA, GORE ZONE, and SCARS… to co-hosting FANGORIA RADIO with Dee Snider from 2006 - 2010… to winning enough awards to be known as “The Meryl Streep of Horror”… to her triumphant recovery from a brain tumor… to directing her first feature film with 2016's MODEL HUNGER… Debbie is a living example of never giving up, an eternal optimist, a survivor, and a hero to so many of us. Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a writer looking to break in and a patient having anxiety about returning to “normal” after the pandemic, Joe recalls how Debbie taught him what a consummate professional looks like on a set, and Adam gets no respect after crowning an actress with the title of “Scream Queen Winner."

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS (1982) is a criminally underseen film. Ahead of its time, THE STAINS was dedicated to depicting the gritty nature of the music world on the cusp of a new decade. For never having a theatrical release, this film’s relentlessly empowering nature has ensured its steady climb to cult status. ▶️Synopsis: Surrounded by a male-dominated music scene, an all-female teenage band, The Stains, join an on-going tour with jaded, aging rockers and a brassy UK punk band. While perfecting their sound and look, The Stains discover the turmoil that accompanies becoming a media sensation. ⏩⏩Discussions include: Music industry truths about fandom, band realities, power of the media and the ‘70s-‘80s music scene convergence; writer Nancy Dowd’s inspiration for the script backed by punk expert, Caroline Coon, plus their on-set problems and creative differences with director Lou Adler’s vision; the underage cast mixed with famous musicians; original ending vs. the theatrically released version; messages derived from the film, the influence on real-life musicians and how this atypical teen journey of THE STAINS steadily grew into a cult favorite. **Starring Diane Lane, Laura Dern, Marin Kanter, Ray Winstone. Directed by Lou Adler.** ▶️**PICKS OF THE WEEK** —Lindsay’s Pick, UNFAITHFUL (2002): A suburban couple’s marriage is upended when one partner has a chance encounter and lustful affair with a stranger, resulting in an unexpected turn of events. **Starring Diane Lane, Richard Gere, Olivier Martinez. Directed by Adrian Lyne.** —Justin’s Pick, SATISFACTION (1988): After graduating high school, an all-female rock ‘n roll band set out to land an important summer gig, but find the road to success will be a bumpy one. **Starring Justine Bateman, Julia Roberts, Liam Neeson. Directed by Joan Freeman.** ▶️MURRAYMOMENT: We get to the bottom of the romantic rumors between Billy and actor/musician Jenny Lewis which flooded the internet in 2015. ▶️FINAL THOUGHTS: An unfunny prank on the set of THE STAINS and absence of drugs in the film. ▶️NEXT UP: BETTER OFF DEAD (1985)!

James Cameron’s THE ABYSS was a technological marvel in 1989. For many, the film remains a mystery, overshadowed by other Cameron films which reaped the benefits of THE ABYSS’ monumental achievements. Having nearly missed the late-1980s underwater movie wave, THE ABYSS played a massively integral part in Cameron’s career. For our 50th Episode, we’re diving into what made this nearly unimaginable film not only possible, but a feat still awe-inspiring 30 years later. Synopsis: A team of underwater oil rig workers are enlisted to seek out a sunken nuclear submarine. Battling weather problems from above and Navy Seals with an alternative mission, the civilian team discovers an alien species looking to make contact. Discussions include: Aspects of underwater filmmaking, including immense difficulties, dangers and unforeseen challenges; training and hardships faced by the cast and crew; Cameron’s perfectionism and methodical troubleshooting; newly invented technology/special effects; differences between the theatrical and extended cuts of the film; use of *real* underwater breathing liquid; Cameron’s personal influence on the script and use of purposeful sexism; what hindered the film’s release; our love of the cast and why this ambitious movie is so unrelentingly intense.**Starring Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Ed Harris, Michael Biehn. Directed by James Cameron.** **PICKS OF THE WEEK** —Lindsay’s Pick, ANACONDA (1997): A documentary film crew falls prey to an opportunistic, snake-hunting stranger, while being stalked by giant Amazonian anacondas. **Starring Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight, Owen Wilson. Directed by Luis Llosa.** —Justin’s Pick, STRANGE DAYS (1995): Before the dawn of a new millennium, this flashy, neo-noir thriller follows a shady Los Angeles ex-cop/grifter selling visions of the future and uncovering what dangers lay ahead. **Starring Juliette Lewis, Angela Bassett, Ralph Fiennes, Tom Sizemore. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow.** MURRAYMOMENT: Behind the scenes snippets of Billy’s time filming The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. FINAL THOUGHTS: Marketing and reception of THE ABYSS, in relation to other underwater movies released around the same time. NEXT UP:LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS (1982)!

Greetings punks and skunks! Brian and Cargill kick off their month-long Gals Who Rock series with a lost punk classic. Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains didn't get a wide theatrical release, and it didn't turn up on home release for 26 years. When the guys say it's a lost classic, they're not lying, they're professionals. The film features several superstars at the dawn of their careers, including Diane Lane, Laura Dern, and a sexy young Ray Winstone that has both hosts scrambling to put the nitro back in the box. The Fabulous Stains, like the eponymous band there in, has something biting to say about music, about fame, and about identity. It's raucous and fun despite being so cynical that the happy ending (tacked on two years after shooting had wrapped) is somehow more cynical than the intended bleak ending. All this, plus The Dead Rooneys, awkward Thanksgivings at the Dern house, and the guys open a package on air that almost definitely possibly isn't related to a kidnapping.
