Over the past century, thousands of musicals have opened on Broadway. Why do we remember some and not others? My guest this week is Doug Reside, the author of a very interesting new book: Fixing The Musical — How Technologies Shaped the Broadway Repertory.  In this conversation, Doug shares with us how the printed versions of the scripts, cast recordings, movie versions, and even illegal bootlegs on YouTube have shaped the American musical as an art form and defined the Broadway repertory as we know it. This book is filled with fascinating research, which might be expected since, in his day job, Doug Reside is the Curator of the Billy Rose Theatre Division at the NYPL for the Performing Arts. Reside joined NYPL in 2011 first as the digital curator for the performing arts before assuming his current position in 2014. Prior to joining NYPL, Reside served on the directorial staff of the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities at the University of Maryland. He has published and spoken on topics related to theater history, literature, and digital humanities, and has managed several large grant-funded projects on these topics. He holds a PhD in English from the University of Kentucky. How to become a PATRON of Broadway Nation! Thousands of shows have opened on Broadway. Why do we remember some and not others? The musical theatre repertory is not composed of titles popular in the theatre but by those with successful cast recordings, movie versions, or even illegal bootlegs on YouTube. The shows audiences know, and the texts and music they expect to hear when they attend a production, are defined by media consumed at home more than by memories of performances witnessed in the theatre. For example, author Doug Reside shows that it is no accident that the serious book musical with a fixed score developed in the 1940s - when commercially pressed and marketed record albums made it possible to record most of the score of a new musical in a fixed medium. And Hamilton, a musical with dense lyrics and revolutionary musical style, would not have been as easily accessible to world audiences if most hadn't already had the opportunity to learn the score by listening to free digital streams of the original cast recording. The technologies that made these media possible developed concurrently with and shaped the American musical as an art form. Reside uncovers how the affordances and limitations of these technologies established a repertory of titles that are most frequently performed and defined by the texts used in these performances. Fixing the Musical: How Technologies Shaped the Broadway Repertory (Oxford UP, 2023) argues that the musicals we most remember are those which most effectively used their era's best recording and distribution technologies to document and share the work with those who would never see the original production on Broadway. "I didn't want to do any middle level teaching because of behavior, but I ended up teaching eight years at Patrick Henry Junior High. I loved every moment of it. I learned that if the kids loved and trusted you, they would do anything for you. It was just so much fun to take what they were willing to give and do some good work with them. It all translated into how they behaved in choir."Cathleen Britton has been making music her entire life. She grew up in Aberdeen, South Dakota, and then studied music at The University of South Dakota, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master's Degree in Music Education. Britton has spent her career largely in Sioux Falls directing middle and high school vocal music programs. Her concert choirs have been selected repeatedly to perform at regional conventions, college music festivals and even at Carnegie Hall. Show choirs directed by Britton have received top awards at competitions in a multi‐state area. Outside school, Britton directed the Asbury Methodist Adult Choir for 15 years and was vocal conductor at the Augustana Summer Music Camp. She has served as Clinician and Festival Conductor at numerous conventions and competitions throughout the state and region. She traveled to Muscat, Oman as a festival conductor for the TAISM Festival of Choirs.Britton has fostered the growth of vocal music programs through her work in the American Choral Directors' Association where she has served as Repertory and Standards Chairperson for Vocal Jazz and Show Choir, Publicity Chair, and Convention Clinician for the North Central Division of the ACDA. She also held the office of State President of the South Dakota Chapter of ACDA. In 1996, Britton received the Encore Award for excellence and achievement in choral music and in 2008 was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by her peers in the American Choral Directors' Association‐South Dakota Chapter. Britton was honored as the South Dakota recipient of the National Federation of High Schools 2011 Outstanding Music Educator Award. She was their North Central regional recipient for the same award in 2017, and in 2020, she received a national citation from NFHS.To get in touch with Cathy, you can find her on Facebook (@cathy.clark.britton) or Instagram (@catbritton).Choir Fam wants to hear from you! Thank you to Mathias and Doris Berner from the Network to Heal Summit, for allowing us to use their content for the Homeopathy Hangout Podcast. You can learn more about their work at www.mathiasberner.com  Jeremy talks about the traumatization of people on both sides in Gaza. He explains the treatment of acute trauma caused by violence and was as well as a way out of the permanent re-traumatization of the Jewish population in the world. We learn how we as humans can get out of the duality of good and evil and how hate and emotions make us susceptible to manipulation. Jeremy explains the most important acute remedies and the most important means for the "chronic" reappraisal that is sorely needed to break the cycle of violence and finally create peace and harmony. Jeremy has taught at most UK homeopathic schools and founded the Dynamis School for Advanced Homeopathic Studies in 1986, which is now the longest running postgraduate homeopathic course in the world. He has taught the three-year Dynamis curriculum in England, Ireland, Holland, Switzerland, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Israel, Canada, Japan and the United States. Jeremy has also given seminars in Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Bulgaria, Hungary, Morocco, China, Russia, India, South Africa, Mexico, New Zealand, Argentina and Australia. He maintains numerous practices in London, Tel Aviv, New York and Africa. He received a scholarship from the Society of Homeopaths in 1991 and received his doctorate from Medicina Alternativea and Pioneer University. He is a member of the North American Society of Homoeopaths and the Israeli Society for Classical Homoeopathy. Jeremy is Honorary Professor at Yunan Medical College, Kunming, China, and Associate Professor at Candegabe University of Homeopathy, Argentina. Jeremy is the author of ten homeopathic books and many published articles and research papers and has proven (a process of shamanic and academic research) and published 38 new homeopathic remedies. His books The Dynamics and Methodology of Homoeopathic Provings and Dynamic Materia Medica: Syphilis are homeopathic bestsellers and are used as textbooks in many schools. He is currently working on a series of books on the noble gases, of which "Helium", "Neon" and "Argon" have already been published, followed by "Krypton". He is the author of the Repertory of Mental Qualities and "Homeopathy for Africa", a free teaching course for African homeopaths. He has published three extensive (40+ hours) self-published online video courses, including "The Homeopathic Treatment of Epidemics and AIDS in Africa." He has worked as a consultant for several homeopathic software companies. For the past 11 years, Jeremy has lived in Tanzania with his wife Camilla, also a homeopath, working on their volunteer project "Homeopathy for Health in Africa", where they treated AIDS patients and researched remedies for AIDS free of charge. They have set up 19 clinics and a homeopathic center and work, among other things, in two hospitals and with Maasai tribes in the countryside. They have trained many local homeopaths and together have treated over 20,000 patients.
