The Rocky Road hits its 200th episode during Paddy's week – so who better to have on than the King of New York himself, Ireland's John Duddy. He had a famous fan in Jake LaMotta and later worked closely with Robert DeNiro, who had starred as The Bronx Bull in Martin Scorsese's epic Raging Bull back in 1980. Even today he's boxing royalty in the Big Apple but John Duddy is also a son of Derry and an Irish boxing cult hero, someone who helped popularise professional boxing in the early noughties, leading to a wave of up and coming fighters to follow their dreams either at home or across the pond. Show that you can become a big name in Dublin and you could be labelled ‘the next Bernard Dunne'. Show that you're ready to break the Big Apple and you might, you just might, be labelled ‘the next John Duddy'. The Derry Destroyer fought nine times at Madison Square Garden between 2005 and 2010 – winning them all – and lost just twice in a 31-fight career. At one stage he was right in the mix to fight for the middleweight championship of the world – which LaMotta held between 1949 and 1951 – but boxing had other plans for him. John wrapped up his career in 2011 when he realised his hunger had dimmed, cancelling an all-Irish match-up with Andy Lee, and, bitten by the acting bug, he's never looked back. He's still involved in the sport to this day, spearheading a new programme with the Moving Brains Foundation which put on 54 two-hour sessions for people with Parkinsons Disease in 2024 – and continues to grow and grow. And he is also coaching at Trinity Boxing in New York City, a stone's throw from the World Trade Centre, with the hope of one day opening his own gym. In Part 1, we look back at John's early years in the Irish amateur ranks, his determination to unseat Michael Roche as light-middleweight champ and the Corkman's incredible gesture before he finally did, his boxing pals who made it all so enjoyable, and hunkering down to avoid a hurricane in Cuba during a training camp. We also discuss the links in the chain that go from his early life until now – his uncle Jackie, his dad Michael, Charlie Nash, Ken Buchanan, Barry McGuigan and Roberto Duran. This is the ultimate Rocky story. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Welcome back to Intermission, a spin-off podcast from The Film Stage Show. Led by yours truly, Michael Snydel, I invite a guest (or guests, in this case) to discuss an arthouse, foreign, or experimental film of their choice. Warning: The episode features discussions about suicide. If you feel you are in crisis or know someone who is struggling, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. It is a free, 24-hour hotline at 1.800.273.TALK (8255). For the eleventh episode, I switched up the format of the show a little bit and talked to both Charlie Nash, a contributor at Edge Media and various other publications, and his close friend, William Willoughby, a veteran who was kind enough to speak about the film's relationship with his own PTSD, about Elem Klimov's controversial and influential 1985 Russian anti-war film, Come and See––which is available on The Criterion Collection and to stream on The Criterion Channel. Klimov's film is a staggering portrayal of the loss of innocence of an idealistic teenager during the Nazi occupation of Belarus during World War II. True to its name, it's less a traditional war film than a feature-length crucible for its young lead (played by Aleksei Kravchenko, whose hair did indeed turn gray during the arduous production), whose only remnants of childhood disappear long before he's reduced to a sobbing mess as seen on the infamously imposing cover. But despite the endurance test reputation from its advocates and critics––it's regularly featured as a poster child for “films that you'll only ever want to see once” along with popular controversial choices like Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom or Irreversible––it doesn't resort to sensationalism despite the film's effectively torrential presentation. Come and See channels a different kind of unspeakable horror. A sensation that lingers not because of gore or the brutality, but because Klimov and his performers so deftly evoke the consuming psychic disruption of war. That's in large part thanks to the sound design––a maelstrom of jagged noise, silence, melodramatic inner and outer monologues, diegetic folk and classical music, and unceasing crying. It also doesn't feel constricted by the usual expectations of the standard war film and its stampeding self-importance or worries about not showing battles as heroic. That last suggestion is the starting point for today's podcast conversation as Charlie and Will first talk about their complex and extreme emotional reactions to the film before we all deconstruct what makes a war film effective and how many American films fail in that respect. It's a frank, difficult conversation, but one that I hope communicates the ways Come and See feels truly singular. Intermission episodes are shared exclusively with our Patreon community before being posted to The Film Stage Show's main feed. Hops and Box Office Flops

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 7, 2020 101:43

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li somehow manages to be the worst big screen adaptation of the franchise. The 1994 film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme wasn't a huge hit and was most certainly not critically beloved. Thus, Chun-Li had a low bar to clear, but it still could not do it. It made less money—$12.8 million vs $99.4 million—and couldn't even cross the 10% threshold critics set for 94's. It sits at just 5% on Rotten Tomatoes with a viewer average of 18%. To quote film historian Leonard Maltin, "The 1994 movie was one of the worst films ever inspired by a video game; it should have been titled Four Hundred Funerals and No Sex. Yet this bomb makes it predecessor seem like Gone With the Wind." Yes, it is that bad. Its script is bland; its characters are underwritten; and it's a martial arts movie where the fight scenes and choreography just aren't good. For a game known for its flying fisticuffs, that's quite a predicament. Chun-Li's issues with what should be its signature moments is a little befuddling. It was directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak—who'd served as the cinematographer on several high-profile movies and had also helmed other movies in this genre. Not to say that Cradle to the Grave and Romeo Must Die are excellent or anything, but they're certainly more competent than this. In Chun-Li, the action scenes are hacked to death, quick cutting from one moment to the next. And when Chun-Li finally unleashes her iconic "Spinning Bird Kick," it's lost in the haze of a diluted camera filter. These problems are entirely attributable to the movie's casting. From Neal McDonough as an Irish M. Bison to Taboo (yes, the guy from the Black Eyed Peas) as Vega to Kristen Kreuk as the titular hero, it's sort of a nightmare. Their lack of training and martial arts acumen are far too apparent. Save for Chris Klein, who's the only person who seems to understand the kind of movie he's in, as Charlie Nash and Robin Shou as Gen, the movie would be virtually unwatchable. Robin, you deserved better. So sit back, spin-kick the cap off of a Tsingtao from Tsingtao Brewery, and polish up your Hadouken! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, and Chumpzilla are taking to the streets to throw down with M. Bison and his magical tiger fists! It’s #GivingTuesday and I want to implore you to consider contributing the the Mat Talk Podcast Network. This is more than just podcasts. This show, Short Time Shots, is just a glimpse at what type of news I provide, for free, to the wrestling community at an almost daily basis. Why almost daily? I’ve got a wife and kids, too.  At the end of each episode, I normally make a plug about contributing. This show and the daily wrestling newsletter is a value for value model. If you find it of value and worthwhile to you, consider making a one-time or small monthly contribution to what you think this is worth to you. If you like it just fine and feel like you’re spending enough on wrestling subscriptions and online offerings, that’s absolutely fine. If you think this is actually worth something more than your time, hey, give that a shot too. You can modify your contribution at any time. Go to mattalkonline.com/contribute to see the various ways you can help out. I’ve got a staff of 10 - fingers. Thanks to Pat Fitzgerald, Trent Kroll, John McCarty and Craig Scharer for their contributions this Tuesday.  That’s it for the sales pitch, because THIS is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily recap of the scores and more in and around the world of wrestling, I’m Jason Bryant and in the morning, I’m off to Canuckistan! I mean, Canada. In case you’re wondering, yes, I’m announcing the Canadian Olympic Trials. Yes, they hold them in December. They’re in Niagara Falls, which is actually SOUTH of where I live. Why do they set the team so early? Well, I’ll have an investigative, expose, The World In Crisis. Double gold star if you catch THAT reference.  Dual Meets:  I’d say Mount Union was pretty pumped up about their win on Tuesday. The Purple Raiders social media accounts quickly tagged me on Twitter (@jasonmbryant) to let me know No. 6 Mount Union beat No. 7 Baldwin Wallace 31-9 in the Yellowjackets own gym. Mount Union head coach Josh Malave with quite the conundrum, having to X out the M in Mount Union’s name all week. The only matchup of ranked foes saw Jordin James, ranked No. 1 at 141 for Mount Union, beat No. 9 Charlie Nash 11-4. Lenny Reich shout out as well! Elsewhere in the Ohio Athletic Conference, No. 21 John Carroll picked up its first shutout in three years, topping the Fighting Muskies of Muskingum 43-0. Fastest fall of the night came at 165, where Canton, Ohio native Luke Reicosky picked up six in 64 seconds.  Otterbein improved to 5-2 on the season after beating Ohio Northern 30-15. Top-ranked Drew Kasper picked up another W at 285 for the Cardinals, improving to 14-0 on the season and registering his sixth fall of the year.  And while I’d like to give Mount Union the graphic on Twitter and Instagram, that honor goes to Division II Kentucky Wesleyan. The Panthers won its first dual in school history, topping NAIA Midway 26-19 in Midway, Kentucky. Last year, Kentucky Wesleyan went 0-10 in its maiden season. Kairus Washington’s fall at 285 sealed the deal.  Sticking with some Division II action, Indianapolis shutout Urbana 48-0.  In the NAIA, Williams Baptist beat Hannibal-LaGrange 39-15. Anyone get ZZ Top stuck in their head anytime they hear the name Hannibal-LaGrange? No? The Eagles picked up five falls in the American Midwest Conference win.  In an odd scheduling note, there were two women’s duals initially scheduled on Tuesday, but the North Central-UW-Stevens Point dual was moved to February 18, and the Emmanuel-McKendree dual was canceled. Which can be spelled with one L or two. Cancelled. See. I didn’t get a red underline when I typed it, but you … can’t actually see that.  Notables on the Docket: Division II Lander will host its first dual in school history as the Bearcats welcome another first-year program, fellow Division II member and conference mate Mount Olive. Mount Olive won its first dual as a program last week - this is the first time Lander is stepping on the mat for a dual, ever. Kentucky Wesleyan will try to win two in a row as they visit NAIA Thomas More. There will be no more Elisabeth Shue references. Well, there might be.  In Division III, we have a five duals involving teams from D3 and all five of them are in-state battles. Pitt-Bradford faces Thiel, Southern Virginia faces the new NJCAA program at Southwest Virginia Community College, Fontbonne takes on Westminster, NAIA Lincoln faces Millikin and UW-Stevens Point faces UW-Platteville.  The NAIA mostly follows suit, as Truett McConnell faces Life, Central Christian takes on Ottawa and Arizona Christian faces Embry-Riddle. Grand View and Baker gotta screw it all up by being from different states.  Fontbonne and Westminster are scheduled to go there on the women’s side as well, while Saint Mary (Kan.) heads to wrestle Missouri Valley.  FROM THE DWN: The University of Iowa announced on Tuesday that four-time All-American Brandon Sorensen has begun undergoing treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. There are numerous outlets with information on this, including the Daily Iowan, Trackwrestling, The Cedar Rapids Gazette, the Quad City Times … after this kind of news, there really isn’t much I want to promote here today. Thoughts are with Sorensen, his family and the entire Iowa wrestling family.  The only good news really coming from Iowa today was the Hawkeyes did come in as a unanimous No. 1 in the NWCA Division I Coaches Poll. Slight movement, nothing major.  No major changes in the NJCAA Team Rankings as Western Wyoming is still No. 1 there.  From the Asbury Park Press, Rutgers head wrestling coach Scott Goodale gives a mighty endorsement for the football program bringing back Greg Schiano as head football coach. Apparently, Goodale was a pretty good tosser of the pigskin back in high school. Not quite like Uncle Rico, but good.  Cuban Olympic medalist Alexis Vila was sentenced to 15 years in prison for his role in arranging a murder. Yikes.  Cronkite News, which we’ve discussed on the show before, drops another solid wrestling piece, this time Sarah Farrell profiles Marlee Smith, the lone woman on the Arizona State wrestling team. There’s even a quote from your sometimes-humble host, that’s me.  The Cuban Greco-Roman wrestling team is leaving Iran, according to the Mehr News Agency. The Cubans were training in the run up to the Greco-Roman World Cup, which was postponed by United World Wrestling last week. The Iranian contingent is adamant they will put on the event, passing off alleged safety concerns in the country.  This was posted yesterday, but since there was no Shots, I repeat such info here. The Japan News reports that four-time Olympic champion Kaori Icho has not entered the All Japan Championships set for this weekend, effectively ending her chances at winning an unprecedented fifth Olympic wrestling gold medal. She’s the only human being who has ever walked the planet to win four Olympic gold medals in wrestling.  On The Network Kyle Klingman and Andy Hamilton go On The Mat with the Director of Wrestling and the head men’s wrestling coach at Presbyterian College, Mark Cody.  WarUP on The WPIAL with Jeff Upson and Greg Warnock chat about things related to Waynesburg Central in Western Pennsylvania.  Keep an eye out for a new show coming this week on the network called State of Wrestling. It’ll be an organizational podcast coming from the NWCA. I’ll host it and the first guest will be NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. “An it harm none, do as you will" “Do as you will shall be the whole of the law”. The Wiccan “Rule of Three” (everything you send out comes back to you threefold which should make anyone a bit hesitant to do harm). We should also know that lots of people who use magick are not Wiccans; indeed many Christians (who have their own Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”) create effects in accordance with their will, even if they add phrases like “for the best of all” or “this or something better”. Some call it “manifesting” or “prayer” not magick, but it seems to be pretty much the same thing.          However, given that humans seem to have this ability (to greater or lesser extent- but greater as we practice with it), we then must look at the ethics of doing something with this ability. Can we, as Breitbart reporter Charlie Nash said last week, accept that “feminist-inspired witchcraft movement is casting evil spells on White House officials” and that this is an “increasing thing under Trump”? Last February there was a similar story from the same source telling of Witches casting a binding spell on Trump. This could be just more Trump generated Faux News, or perhaps some of us are trying to use the resources we have to minimize the damage of an out-of-control government. If we complain about the rich “buying” favors, are we as bad as they if we use resources other people may not have to encourage the ends we want?   Wednesday I'm going to talk about the ethics of using magick on other people, and I'd love others to call in with their perspectives, whether you're for or against it, whether you're a witch or not, whether you cast or manifest.

This week, friend of the show (and the hosts!) Charlie Nash returns to the guest seat in Dave's absence. The first review of the night is Evan and Charlie with MOLLY'S GAME (3:38), Aaron Sorkin's directorial debut. The famed writer of A FEW GOOD MEN, THE WEST WING, and THE SOCIAL NETWORK, known for his tight and layered dialogue, would have benefited from applying the same discipline to his camerawork and pacing, as a worthwhile story with good performances gets buried under its own weight (and penchant for mansplaining). Next up is Charlie with a captivating recap of CALL ME BY YOUR NAME (28:15), Luca Guadagnino's coming of age tale love story starring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer. It boasts lush visuals and a deep exploration of discovering sides of ourselves we neither understand how to express nor contain. Wrapping things up is THE POST (48:44), Steven Spielberg's latest masterpiece -- yes, it really is -- about the publishing of the Pentagon Papers. With a top-notch cast and a clear understanding of the stakes, it's a must-see for history buffs or anyone who cares about valuing truth  and accountability above comfort and stability.

Episode 60 of One Week Only! This week, we are joined by special guest Charlie Nash, freelance film journalist and member of the Boston Online Film Critics Association! Our key film this week is the absurdist French farce "Slack Bay" about a ridiculously weird wealthy family in 1910's France on holiday at their seaside estate, and the mysterious "disappearances" going on in the neighborhood. Featuring a wonderful cast (including Juliette Binoche) playing a variety of strange characters, it's an absurd comedy about class and society told with expertly dark humor and visual splendor by director Bruno Dumont. It opened last week in New York, opened the COLCOA French Film Festival this week, and is now playing in Los Angeles.(44:00) We also review the horror film "A Dark Song" about an occult ceremony, directed by Liam Gavin (4:00); the period biopic "Nise: The Heart of Madness" about a courageous Brazilian doctor, directed by Roberto Berliner (10:35); the journalism documentary "Obit" about The New York Times obituary department, directed by Vanessa Gould (17:05); the Israeli dramedy "One Week and a Day" about a couple dealing with grief, directed by Asaph Polonsky (29:50); and the Canadian Jewish drama "Natasha" about Russian immigrants, directed by David Bezmozgis (36:50). All three of them delve into the reasons this Peter Berg/Mark Wahlberg vehicle about the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing is insulting to Bostonians — like Walhberg’s made up character, its exploitative shots of grisly carnage, its selective focus on victims, and its hard-on for authoritarianism. Not surprisingly, there is an overlap between that segment and the next one, where the guys discuss the Worst Movies of 2016 (at 33:54). Charlie hasn’t seen it, so Kris and Evan convince him to check it out by spoilerpiecing how its hero acquires his kung fu powers. Then it’s up to Evan to describe MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2, or as he calls it, MY BIG FAT SEQUEL. He’s annoyed by how hypocritical it is, which leads to a tangent about another hypocritical movie: I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK AND LARRY. Once he finishes sharing all the reasons why MBFGW2 wasn’t good, all three guys tear into BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE. Charlie describes how it looks like shit (dark, murky, and brown) and explains why Batman and Superman are wrong in their worldviews. Evan craps on it too for its poor direction and editing. Kris is no fan either, but he provides interesting context for the movie in relation to comic book storylines and describes the few things he did actually like about it.

This week Charlie Nash makes his second Spoilerpiece appearance to share his experiences at the Coolidge Corner Halloween Horror Movie Marathon and the New York Film Festival with Evan and Kris. At the 12-hour movie marathon, which he dubs “a cinephile’s wet dream,” Charlie saw horror films that stimulated his overactive imagination like HALLOWEEN, NIGHT OF THE DEMONS, THE CHANGLING, and THE HITCHER. Also, at the New York Film Festival he watched CAROL and SON OF SAUL, two important movies that he breaks down. Charlie and Kris then take on SPECTRE, the James Bond picture that Kris dubs "more of a postscript than an epilogue" to Daniel Craig's entries in the franchise. It’s overly long, self-congratulatory, and worst of all—it has a shitty theme song. Thankfully all three of the guys saw SPOTLIGHT, a tremendous film that chronicles the Boston Globe’s report that exposed sexual scandal in the Catholic Church. Not only is it a better Boston movie than BLACK MASS, but SPOTLIGHT is elegant, subtle, and gripping based on its story and the performances by its leads.

Charlie Nash of Movie Mezzanine, Edge on the Net, All Things Horror, and Cinematic Essential joins Evan and Kris this week to take on INSIDE OUT, DOPE, and ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL. The guys start by bitching about jerks who spoil GAME OF THRONES before they share why Pixar’s film INSIDE OUT moved them to tears. All three enjoyed it so much that they can’t think of a single bad thing to say about it. Next up, Kris and Charlie summarize DOPE, while attempting to separate its promising parts from the misfires it makes and detours it takes. Then they wrap things up with the abhorrent ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL, a picture that’s so bad it makes Kris angry for once. He and Charlie spoilerpiece what makes it so awful for Evan, which gives him some pretty awful ideas of his own for what to do with it when it comes out on DVD.

Special guest Charlie Nash stopped by for the second part of our Cinema Fix episode on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and the resulting discussion was pretty bananas. As great as the visual effects are, is performance capture technology ever going to feel timeless? Is the film's bleak tone an appropriate one given the ridiculous nature of the property? How does Matt Reeves' direction elevate poor writing? And what is it trying to say about the nature of violence, and do the climactic moments undermine the intended message? Tune in to find out. SHOW NOTES: 0:22 - Intro 3:05 - Charlie's general thoughts 5:52 - Performance capture technology -- how good is it? 20:06 - Characterization (or lack thereof) 23:32 - The opening scene, apes on horseback 26:53 - The gun control message and tone of the violence 30:06 - Koba and Blue Eyes 37:09 - A hypocritical view of violence? 53:06 - Andrew nitpicks a human reaction 58:49 - Show close DON'T FORGET: You can contact the show by emailing cinemafix@filmgeekradio.com or leaving a voicemail at 336-793-2509. Special guest Charlie Nash stops by to help Monica argue with Andrew about Kimberly Peirce's version of Carrie. Is the film really a total waste of time? How is Carrie different in this version? In this episode, Charlie Nash from Avenging Angels and Your Magazine Emerson stops by to discuss The Conjuring. Or rather, he drops in to help Monica explain to Andrew why he's wrong. Charlie Nash sticks around to really dissect the jumbled mediocrity that is Snitch. The movie is an interesting mess, but it's still messy, so they spend half an hour talking through it.
