Unlocking Energy Storage Value: PJM Market Reforms with Brattle Group's Serena Patel Episode Overview: In this special live episode of the Solar Maverick Podcast, recorded at the 2025 Mid-Atlantic Solar & Storage Industries Association (“MSSIA”) Solar & Storage Insight Conference in New Brunswick, NJ, host Benoy Thanjan sits down with Serena Patel, Energy Research Associate at The Brattle Group, to unpack critical energy storage market reforms in the PJM interconnection. The conversation focuses on a groundbreaking report from Brattle, commissioned by the American Clean Power Association, that lays out a roadmap for unlocking the full value of energy storage across U.S. energy markets. Key Topics Covered: Why PJM's current market design undervalues flexible storage resources The two most urgent market reforms: ▪ Opportunity cost bidding for energy storage ▪ Creation of new ancillary service and ramping reserve products How suppressed price signals hinder storage operators' revenue Lessons from other RTOs like CAISO and NYISO that PJM can implement now The case for all-source procurement in local reliability planning The critical role of stakeholder engagement and policy advocacy to push reforms forward Featured Report: Energy Storage Market Design Reforms: A Roadmap to Unlock the Potential of Energy Storage By: Brattle Group for the American Clean Power Association Released: April 2025 https://www.brattle.com/insights-events/publications/brattle-experts-prepared-an-energy-storage-market-reform-roadmap-for-several-us-electricity-markets/ Notable Quotes: “Our current systems were built for legacy fossil fuel generators. If we don't reform the markets now, we risk undervaluing the flexibility that storage offers.” – Serena Patel “Opportunity cost bidding would help storage developers maximize revenue by bidding strategically, rather than being constrained by outdated market rules.” – Serena Patel   Takeaway for Developers & Policymakers: To accelerate storage deployment, developers must actively engage in PJM stakeholder processes and advocate for reforms that enable revenue stacking and flexibility compensation. The Brattle report offers actionable insights to guide that involvement.   Thanks to MSSIA: Special thanks to the MiSSIA for hosting the Solar Maverick Podcast at their first annual conference and for their continued solar and storage advocacy in NJ, PA, and DE.   Benoy Thanjan Benoy Thanjan is the Founder and CEO of Reneu Energy and he is also an advisor for several solar startup companies.  He has extensive project origination, development, and financial experience in the renewable energy industry and in the environmental commodities market.   This includes initial site evaluation, permitting, financing, sourcing equipment, and negotiating the long-term energy and environmental commodities off-take agreements. Burned by an aborted nuclear power plant new build that saddled the state's consumers with hundreds of millions of dollars in needless costs for years to come, South Carolina's Act 187 established a legislative study committee to ponder whether the state's electricity consumers might not be better off with competitive reforms of the Palmetto State's 150-year-old monopoly regulatory regime. A centerpiece of the committee's considerations is a sweeping analysis of the competitive options the state could pursue, comprehensively put together by the Brattle Group. We talk with two of the report's authors – John Tsoukalis, principal, and Andrew Levitt, senior consultant, at the Brattle Group – about their report with the top-line conclusion that South Carolina electricity consumers could save up to $300 million annually if the state's utilities participated in some form of large regional transmission pooling organization. The biggest cost savings, they determined, among the various scenarios considered in the report, were projected from a scenario envisioning if the entire Southeast region, not just South Carolina, were to throw in with PJM Interconnection, the large regional transmission operator encompassing from Illinois across to Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland (PJM) and Virginia, in order to create a large, diverse wholesale power marketplace that helps minimize the considerable costs of meeting resource needs and operating a reliable powergrid. As directed by Act 187, the Brattle analysis also examined the potential consumer savings available from conducting a consolidated statewide integrated resource planning (IRP) process, rather than the less efficient utility-by-utility IRP planning that the state's utilities undertake with regulators to determine development or acquisition of new generation resources to meet reliability needs – and then performing competitive solicitations to help develop any new resources. Also as required by the law compelling Brattle's analysis, the report delved into the Third Rail of electricity politics: restructuring utility regulatory oversight to provide some form of competition in retail sales to consumers, whether residential or the large industrial and commercial customers. "Part of what I guess people don't really understand is, you can't really do retail choice unless you have competitive wholesale markets that are working already," Tsoukalis explains, calling the potentially near-term savings from grid regionalization the "low-hanging fruit" of the options available to lawmakers to consider going forward."There's so many options" in the report for lawmakers to consider, Levitt notes. "You can take a mix-and-match approach, different ways through governance, different ways to do transmission planning. You can share these things and not share those things. I'm 100% confident that there's a solution out there that will match the political will that's present at the moment. I don't myself know what the solution will be, but we're available to help craft it."Support the show

Inside this Episode with Mitch Hampton My very first familiarity with Todd Berliner comes from a single book: his book on 70s movies, “Hollywood Incoherent”. Although my incentive to read this was partly due to ongoing research for my own book, there were many things I found intriguing about Berliner's book. Only gradually over time did I begin to realize that my commonality with him was wider than interest in 1970s cinema: we also tended to look at movies and, most generally art, in very similar ways - ways we were fortunate to get into in this episode. Like all my favorite scholars Berliner gets "inside" of what he discusses, rather than distract us with relatively irrelevant or unimportant material. I enjoyed talking movies with him during this episode and it certainly brought me back to the days when I was around "haunts" like the Brattle, Film Forum, Coolidge Corner, or even the days of Cinema 5 and 16! I hope the audience enjoys listening to this episode as much as we did creating it. Professor Berliner's Bio Todd Berliner, Professor of Film Studies at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, teaches film style, storytelling, and aesthetics and American film history. This episode is a recap of the recent Boston International Antiquarian Book Fair, which recently returned to the Hynes Convention Center after years of online-only events. How did it go? The short answer is, Great! It was well attended, with over 120 dealers exhibiting, so everyone could enjoy seeing old friends – and making new ones – in person again. Rare books sold briskly, panel discussions got lively, and the Brattle gave out about 35 pounds of M&M's – regular and peanut. If you couldn't make it this year, don't worry: we're already planning events for 2023 and 2024. Listen to learn more, and head to bostonbookfair.com to keep up with future fair news.

If you're getting ready to sell a house, you may already know about painting the walls eggshell white and popping a tray of cookies into the oven, but have you considered paring down your library? Home buyers tend to be dreamy and fickle: something as innocuous as a Harry Potter hardcover collection in the living room can prevent them from envisioning a happy future there. On the other hand, desolate shelves are also depressing; it's best to convey the idea of books without getting too specific. We'll talk about how the Brattle can help with your home staging journey, as well as the unexpected connections between the real estate market and the secondhand book business, on this moving new #brattlecast.

Introduction to the book by William Cooper - from Belcher Foundation, -COOPER -WILLIAM-, minister in Boston, was a native of that town, and being early impressed by the truths of religion and delighting in the study of the scriptures, he passed through the temptations of youth without a blemish upon his character. He was grave, but not gloomy nor austere- discreet, but not precise- and cheerful, with innocence. While a member of Harvard college, where he was graduated in 1712, he ardently cultivated those branches of science, which were most useful and important. Every literary pursuit was sanctified by prayer, and every human acquisition rendered subservient to the knowledge of God and religion. Soon after he began to preach, the eminence of his qualifications as a minister attracted the attention of the church in Brattle street, Boston, and he was invited to be colleague pastor with the reverend Mr. -Benjamin- Colman. At his own request his ordination was delayed for a year, until May 23, 1716, when he was inducted into the sacred office. From this period to that of his death his ministerial gifts, graces, and usefulness seemed constantly to increase, and the more he was known, the more he was esteemed, loved, and honored. In the year 1737 he was chosen president of Harvard college, but he declined the honorable trust. He died December 13, 1743, in the fiftieth year of his age.-

As the Covid-19 pandemic slowly draws to a close, we're taking stock of some of the changes it's caused—to downtown Boston, the secondhand book business, and, especially, the Brattle. Differences at the shop run deeper than masked employees and plexiglass barriers: after a disastrous first year, we're busier than ever before, and our new customers tend to be younger and more diverse. A revised book-buying policy has cut down on conflict, and we've renewed our focus on in-person shopping, keeping many of the better books offline. Some of the most important changes at the shop have to do with not being there: prioritizing family, travel, and work/life balance. We talk about it all on today's “new normal” episode of the #brattlecast.

Something interesting is happening: the Brattle's traditional demographic of bookish older men (No offense! We love you!) is being edged out by younger, more diverse, and dare we say, hipper customers. Why? Our photogenic outdoor sale lot has become popular on Instagram, creating a cycle of visits, alfresco shopping selfies, likes, organic advertising, and more visits. We'll talk about the ways that this social media-driven shift is changing the shop, and the irony of an ultramodern communication network luring people back into the arms of dusty old books, on this potentially viral #brattlecast.

The Brattle often rents books out as props, and sometimes serves as a set for student films, but recently, for the first time, a major Hollywood movie filmed a scene at the shop. The Holdovers, directed by Alexander Payne (Sideways, The Descendants) and starring Paul Giamatti (American Splendor, Billions) is set at a New England prep school over the winter break of 1970. We'll talk about what it took to transform our sale lot into a part of Boston's gritty, bygone Combat Zone (not much), where film crews find snow, and more show business secrets on this behind the scenes #brattlecast.

In the second episode in our series on how the shop works, we're talking about specificity. Before the Brattle can buy a group of books, we have to figure out what they are. Sounds simple, right? But often, the person calling us is not the person who collected the books, and they're not sure what they have. We'll ask, ‘What kind of books are they?' and they'll reply, ‘Fiction and non-fiction' or ‘Hardcovers and paperbacks.' Even if we can narrow it down to, say, books on food, that could mean thousands of different things, from fast food pamphlets to the first cookbook published in America (American Cookery). Learn how we narrow it down, and what makes a library desirable in general, on this laser-focused #brattlecast.
