From May 29, 2019: Steve Young, longtime comedy writer for David Letterman, visited the show to talk about a new documentary, Bathtubs Over Broadway:In this award-winning, feel-good documentary, a comedy writer for David Letterman stumbles upon a secret musical world starring tractors and bathtubs and finds an unexpected connection to his fellow man. With David Letterman, Martin Short, Jello Biafra, Chita Rivera, Don Bolles, and more.SYNOPSIS:When he started as a comedy writer for the Late Show with David Letterman, Steve Young had few interests outside of his day job. But while gathering material for a segment on the show, Steve stumbled onto a cache of vintage record albums that would change his life forever. Bizarre cast recordings - marked "internal use only" - revealed full-throated Broadway-style musical shows about some of the most recognizable corporations in America: General Electric, McDonald's, Ford, DuPont, Xerox. They also featured writers and performers who would become legends, such as Chita Rivera, Kander & Ebb, Florence Henderson, and Bob Fosse. Steve didn't know much about musical theater, but these recordings delighted him in a way that nothing ever had. BATHTUBS OVER BROADWAY follows Steve Young on his quest to uncover all he can about this hidden world. While delving into treasure troves of forgotten archives, tracking down rare albums, unearthing unseen footage, and rediscovering composers and performers, Steve comes to form unlikely friendships and discovers how this discarded musical genre starring tractors and bathtubs was bigger than Broadway.ABOUT STEVE YOUNGSteve Young is a New York-based comedy writer, author, songwriter, and lecturer. This documentary was delivered right to our doorstep with a stamp that said "your brand": the tale of a late-night comedy writer and how he stumbled into the enormous and yet nearly lost world of the industrial musical, multi-million dollar shows put on for corporations and never meant to be seen by society at large. Which is a crime, because "My Bathroom" is a work of aural genius. Friend of the pod Tori joins us once more to discuss Skippy peanut butter (which had a ton of heavy product placement in The Peanut Butter Solution) and some Canadian commercials from 1985!Annette Funicello Skippy commercials, Dennis the Menace Skippy commercial, Animated Rockin' Skippy commercial, Skippy Dipping Commercial...The people in the animated Skippy commercial are, as Julia notes, extremely cool. Perhaps even cooler than the cool kids from the 1980s Skittles commercial we discussed last weekThe crispy coated peanuts Julia mentioned are apparently known as Japanese Peanuts in the United States, and apparently they were invented in Mexico by a Japanese immigrant. We also speculate about influencers getting into the peanut butter hair growth trend. And yes, you CAN find videos of people using peanut butter as a conditioning mask. We also watched Eleven Canadian Commercials from 1985.Bathtubs Over Broadway is a documentary about industrial musicals that Julia recommends, and that the Canada Cooler commercial reminded them of it. Do you personally remember any of these commercials? Have you ever tried Schooner lager? Let us know!

In the second hour from Wild Rose Casino in Jefferson Ross and Jared Stansbury talk fantasy football, the 30 for 30 "The Sterling Affair," and a couplet documentaries Ross really recommends "Untitled Amazing Jonathan Documentary" and "Bathtubs Over Broadway" but he was not a fan of the Gilbert Gottfried documentary. They also discuss having "The Talk" with their dad, getting condoms from Grandpa, the Ironside Axe Club hosting the World Axe Throwing League championships which will be aired Sunday night on ESPN2 and Ross' Roulette finishes the hour covering Odell Beckham Jr. being "sent to Cleveland to die" and Harbaugh saying its "hard to beat the cheaters."
This week on the pod... Angela reconsiders a career in theatre; Steven almost feels something. ***ADDENDUM: In this episode we inadvertently implied that Steve Young, who is the subject of this documentary, was also the creator/director. That is most definitely not the case as Bathtubs Over Broadway was directed by the award-winning Dava Whisenant. Our bad. As penance we're forcing ourselves to listen to 'The Dishwasher and the Disposal' on repeat. Bathtubs Over Broadway (streaming now on Netflix) is the story of Letterman comedy writer Steve Young and his journey into an obscure sub-genre of theatre, Industrial Musicals. Along the way there are interviews with Don Bolles, Jello Biafra, Martin Short, Florence Henderson, and many other names that you'll know by the end of the film.Dava Whisenant received the Albert Maysles Award for Best New Documentary Director at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival and the 2019 Writers Guild Award for Best Documentary Screenplay.Follow Dava on:Twitter: @davawhisenantInstagram: @cactusflowerfilmsFollow Sup Doc on:Twitter: @supdocpodcastInstagram: @supdocpodcastFacebook: @supdocpodcastsign up for our mailing listAnd you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon.

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher discuss Power Rangers. A 2017 reboot for the big screen, Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks) renews her betrayal of Zordon (Bryan Cranston) on Earth in present day. It's a movie in which the Power Rangers barely appear. There is some decent social interactions between the teens, but the story slogs to an action-packed ending. It's too little too late. This was meant to be the first of a six-part series, and you can tell. Exposition is the name of the game here. Thrasher likes the documentary Bathtubs Over Broadway. It's about the odd history of industrial musical numbers. Mat feels Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes is a detailed 4-hour documentary on the titular killer that can be a little dry at times. Steve Young is a former Letterman writer who put together an incredible documentary called "Bathtubs Over Broadway". He took a moment to talk to Andy about the show.
Oh man, where do we start with this week? Well, we're making up for lost time so we're covering 2 RHOBH, 2 RHONY, 2 Fosse/Verdons, and a whole bunch of new Netflix/Hulu stuff you should check out, including Wine Country; I Think you Should Leave; Dead to Me; Bathtubs Over Broadway; and The Act. We've got comedy, death, dancing, you name it! Reminder to charity organizers, keep the Real Housewives away from your function--they'll sh*t all over it like the disrespectful monsters they are! Be afraid, be very afraid!

(Note: Due to a schedule rearrangement, we reference this ep being before St. Patricks Day. It's Not. We're a pack of liars.) You got a song in your heart? Do you ever make up song and dance numbers about the everyday products you find in your home? Well then, we got the episode for you! Best of all? Bob Sham is barely in it. Therefore there’s way less crude language than usual. Bob didn’t make it out to this “in-theaters” episode to watch “Bathtubs Over Broadway” by Dava Whisenant, so Angela had to be joined by special guest, Jeremy, to discuss this heartwarming story of a Letterman writer obsessed with finding obscure recordings of one-off corporate broadway-style songs called “Industrial Musicals”. More on this over at www.industrialmusicals.com. Tired joke writers team up with tired actors and tired punks to pay homage to this bizarre musical sub-culture. Jeremy is a big fan of musicals and considering how many documentaries there are about theater (a lot), you will likely hear from him again. Unfortunately Bob isn’t totally absent from this episode, but he does have some important things to say. Special thanks to Doritos® for sponsoring this episode. Go out and try their new Asiago Coconut™ flavor. When you Get Cheesed™ with new Doritos® Asiago Coconut™, you’ll be screaming “Cheese Nuts!™”. Chance the Rapper knows what we’re talking about. On this edition of the Cinema Clash: an eclectic mix of films, including an experimental and provocative musical drama VOX LUX; the family addiction drama BEN IS BACK, starring Julia Roberts and Lucas Hedges; the new – but not really new ONCE UPON A DEADPOOL; a quietly affecting Japanese film with awards potential, SHOPLIFTERS; and a surprisingly informative and entertaining documentary about industrial musicals, BATHTUBS OVER BROADWAY. Tune in!
Lots to cover on this week's show as award season races toward the finish line for BOFCA! First up, we hear from Dave who calls in with his thoughts on BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS (2:00). Then Kris makes a hard case for SUPPORT THE GIRLS (8:25), which was a hit on the festival circuit but ought to be way more widely seen. Evan then walks us through MONSTERS AND MEN (19:07), a pretty good take on a story that has nonetheless been covered in more interesting and absorbing ways by other films this year. Kris saw BATHTUBS OVER BROADWAY (28:56), a delightful story about one of the oddest phenomena in American entertainment: the industrial musical. Evan saw INCREDIBLES 2 (35:23) -- surprise surprise, it's good -- and Kris wraps things up with MORTAL ENGINES (41:57) -- surprise surprise, it's not.

After watching an early copy of the forthcoming documentary Bathtubs Over Broadway, Alec became fascinated by the film's quietly hilarious hero, Steve Young. As part of his job as a writer for the David Letterman Show, Steve had to scour secondhand stores for kooky music Dave would play on-air. That's how he first came across recordings of industrial musicals, a genre of theater largely unknown to anyone who didn't attend a sales conference in the 60s or 70s. An "industrial" was a fully staged production commissioned by a large company and performed solely for its salesmen, executives, or distributors. Some starred top-flight Broadway talent and were written by legendary teams like Chicago's Kander and Ebb (Go Fly a Kite for GE, 1966) or Fiddler on the Roof's Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick (Ford-i-fy Your Future, 1959). But many performers and composers made their living primarily doing industrials. Steve Young has dedicated his post-Letterman life to preserving what recordings remain, and to shining light and love on the artists behind these ephemeral creations. Alec and Steve dive into songs like "My Bathroom," and into the psychology of someone who would dedicate his life to saving them from obscurity. Plus they talk Letterman, and Young's own path from blue-collar New England, to Harvard, to the top of the comedy-writing heap.
