This week, we talk a movie that may have been ahead of it's time. Killing Them Softly is a bleak crime thriller that is a metaphor for our bleak political field so I can see why no one want to watch this in 2012 but now we see why it's important.
Matt Strackbein (AKA The Letterhack) is back on MVC to talk about Andrew Dominik's bleak 2012 crime drama Killing Them Softly. Rivka, Frank, and Matt discuss how the film, set during the 2008 financial crisis, serves as a subtextual critique of Obama's first term, how the “criminal” economy drives the plot of the film, and how the film's nihilism has become even more relatable today than when it was released. A New Economic Bill of Rights for the 21st Century For next week's movie, we'll be watching the 1977 John Travolta smash hit Saturday Night Fever.
Rivka and Frank return for another "duet" episode, diving into Sam Raimi's 2009 horror-comedy Drag Me to Hell. This time, they explore whether the film serves as a horror story about class betrayal or a metaphor for eating disorders under capitalism. They also discuss the film's problematic racial tropes and consider the director's political intentions. For next week's movie, we'll be watching another 2012 pic, the crime drama Killing Them Softly.
River of Life A/G
Rivka and Frank are back with another “duet” episode, diving into the 2012 horror-comedy The Cabin in the Woods. A Frank favorite, this film surprises with its sharp critique of capitalism's relentless need for human sacrifice. The duo also can't resist touching on the latest political chatter sparked by Love Is Blind. For next week's movie, we'll be watching another 2012 pic, the crime drama Killing Them Softly.

After some listener mail, the guys discuss the career of Dave Chapelle (2:21). They start off by discussing his early life and his notable family history. They discuss his early failures, his success and his first special “Killing Them Softly”. They then talk about the groundbreaking ‘Chapelle's Show' and how Dave abruptly left the show at season 3. Finally they discuss their thoughts on Chappelle's most recent Netflix stand up special ‘The Dreamer' and the controversy surrounding some his jokes about the trans community. Then, in the second half, the guys talk about the medical complications of cannabis (25:03). Asif goes over the common effects of acute cannabis intoxication. He then discusses how despite what many think, you can become addicted to cannabis. Asif then reviews how cannabis may impair brain development and how it is related to psychosis. He also discusses whether cannabis can be considered a gateway drug. Asif then goes over some of the more severe side effects including cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome and reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome. Ali then asks Asif about any updates regarding seizures and cannabis and also discusses the cultural role of cannabis in some societies. Monday night stone! Steve requests a recall from Mike about the legendary Fuck-Around Brown from Mike's stint in jail many moons ago. Morning show seem to exist only to remind us of the stuff we remember from 20-30 years ago. Mike is clueless about some supposed presidential primaries that have taken place. Steve has the breakdown of the Supreme Court's latest ball washing of Donald Trump's zany transcontinental litigation shenanigans. It seems that technological advances like lane assist for drivers may be reducing the competency of the masses. Luke serves Mike because Mike brought up the same Ben Mendelsohn story from the 2012 film Killing Them Softly like he always does. We sneak in a Bud Light commercial break this week. Don't skip it! Undecided voters are real and the proof if in the endless advertising that defines the culture of the United States. Joe writes in because he knows his email makes the show that much better! Joe shares a video with us from some dude from The Austin School who breaks down the brutal realities of the Palestinian genocide. The video shares certain traits with the SNL clip featuring Bill Hader trying to raise funds for starving people in Africa. Obviously we then had to play the clips of Bill Hader doing Alan Alda impressions. Steve has a bone to pick about Mike's favoritism for Aaron Sorkin's work. He is not having it. We love you all! Our Monthly episode is here!
Our "Alone for the Holidays" series concludes with our final episode of 2023, a discussion of Andrew Dominik's bleak 2012 crime drama KILLING THEM SOFTLY starring Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini, Ray Liotta and Richard Jenkins. Set against the backdrop of the 2008 financial crises, KILLING THEM SOFTLY follows a pair of low-level criminals pulling an opportunistic heist, then switches to the hit man hired to control the fallout. Based on the novel Cogan's Trade by George V. Higgins, KILLING THEM SOFTLY was largely dismissed by audiences upon release as too downbeat, but it's an honest and exhilarating movie of big ideas, expressing with great efficiency and poetry what it means to be alone America. KILLING THEM SOFTLY is currently available to stream for free on PlutoTV or Tubi, or with subscription to Prime Video.
Intraoperative hypotension is now firmly associated with harm and poor outcomes, this conversation should get you thinking about what this means to you as a practitioner. Here Desiree Chappell speaks with Amy Yerdon, Assistant Professor of Nursing, Nursing Acute, Chronic & Continuing Care, University of Alabama, Birmingham and Bradley Steg, CRNA is a Nurse Anesthetist in Jackson, Tennessee.
The fallout 2008 financial crisis has been portrayed on film in a number of ways; from documentary's like Iniside Job (2010) and Capitalism: A Love Story (2009) to ficiton films "inspired" by the events like The Big Short (2015) and Margin Call (2011). Andrew Dominik's Killing Them Softly (2012) takes a different approach. It starts with George V. Higgins' 1974 crime novel, itself the third in a series, that centers on a lower level crime syndicate in Boston. Then Dominik places that story in a 2008 New Orleans during the final weeks of the Obama/McCain presidential election. We get into the obvious metaphors that occur when organized crime is compared to financial institutions. But, we also end up discussing the various ways that Nationalism can manifest itself in America; from George W. Bush, to Obama, to Trump and Biden. We'll be dipping our toes back into this Systemic Risk topic, the intersection of the 2008 crisis and it's portrayal on film. In today's episode we're chatting with Scoot McNairy. Here's a storyteller who's genuinely humble and genuinely extraordinary. He's an award winning actor and a producer. He's worked on numerous award-winning films such as “Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood,” “Gone Girl,” “12 Years a Slave,” “Argo,” and “Killing Them Softly.” He's starred in critically acclaimed series such as “Narcos: Mexico,” “Godless,” and “Halt and Catch Fire.” The list of legendary directors he's worked with will blow your mind. Steve McQueen, Quentin Tarantino, and Gus Van Sant to name a few. Scoot's own story begins in Texas as a kid who was fascinated by how movies were made. Dozens of commercials, TV shows, independent projects, and major studio films later, his fascination for the process of filmmaking has only deepened. But he's also someone who admits there are things he loves doing just as much as acting and there are times when he's left the industry to explore them. He's candid about the working relationships and friendships that have impacted his career. You'll hear what Academy Award, Golden Globe, and Emmy winning actor has inspired him the most. And you'll see how everyone's process coming to the craft is unique—it's important to build your own bag of tricks. With The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and Killing Them Softly, it could be said that director Andrew Dominik specialized in making box-office bombs that were only later discovered to be works of genius. According to Netflix's numbers however, he broke that trend with his next film, gathering 37,340,000 viewing hours...but unfortunately, that movie was also the most widely hated, critically savaged release of the year: the Ana de Armas starrer Blonde! Will MG go with the crowd on this one, or has Dominik made another secret classic?
This week's Nose is like the trick you do with the wiggling, getting all the girls hipped up. Blonde is Andrew Dominik's fourth feature film as writer and director, his first since Killing Them Softly in 2012. It's an adaptation of the Joyce Carol Oates novel, and it stars Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe. Blonde is a Netflix release, and it's said to be the first movie distributed by a streaming service to receive the NC-17 rating. And: Elvis is Baz Luhrmann's sixth feature film as writer and director, his first since The Great Gatsby in 2013. It stars Austin Butler in the title role and Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker. Writer-director Andrew Dominik wrote his adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates' novel "Blonde" in about four weeks — and then waited 12 years for the opportunity to bring it to the screen. The "Killing Them Softly" director joins Filmmaker Toolkit to talk about his decade-plus-long journey to bring Joyce Carol Oates' fictionalized portrait of Marilyn Monroe to the screen, and the epic study of trauma and Hollywood's exploitation of it that he created. Grab the cigarillos and hoist the balaclavas: we go us a score in the works! This episode's exploration of crime cinema guides us through the seedy underbellies of Boston...or New Orleans...or Sawmills...or wherever the heck Killing Them Softly, Andrew Dominik's 2012 political diatribe in hood's clothing, takes place. But before we revel in the muck, we partake in a Blue Plate Special selection that salvages something from John Waters's 1972 cult behemoth Pink Flamingos, find a lot to love with the new A24 slasher Bodies Bodies Bodies, and celebrate the bittersweet conclusion of Better Call Saul. We eventually get around to casing the goldmine of a genre movie that is the subject of this episode, one which prompts a discussion of all things Brad Pitt, a consideration of Dominik's updating of novelist George C. Higgins and his source material, and really just find every opportunity to heap love upon Sam Shepard's brief but legendary walk-on performance as Dillon, the man himself. When Brad Pitt arrived on screen 30+ years ago, he was a pretty face with a surprising sinister side. That brief turn in Ridley Scott's "Thelma and Louise" proved to be a template for the actor's diverse and increasingly accomplished film career. For proof of Pitt's growth as an actor, look no further than the very existence of this week's TOP 5 PITT PERFORMANCES, featuring long-time Pitt skeptic Adam's mea culpa. And for proof of the high quality of the Pitt filmography, consider that Adam and Josh share only one title between them. This week on the podcast as David Leitch returns directing a new action comedy, Bullet Train. And it stars one of the last massive movie stars, I am of course writing about Brad Pitt. So we will be talking Brad Pitt films. Me and Boaz couldn't handle the weight of this mans stardom alone. So we invited the help of Jack and Nick from The Reel Thing Podcast. Warning we will be talking SPOILERS.Martin and Boaz pick for this week is a film where we are accepting defeat, because of The Reel Things exceptional choice. So we went for something a little different with a little gangster film, Killing Them Softly. On this one we talked about the the incredible acting skills from this cast especially from James Gandolfini. We talked about the how the social commentary was used. Plus we talk about a particular assassination scene that was pretty wild. IMBD page As ever please enjoy. The Reel Things website FVF social links InstagramTwitterTikTokSupport the show

The theme for this week is fixers. "Michael Clayton" (2007), stars George Clooney as a bag man for a huge law firm that is representing a Monsanto-like company. The lead attorney on the case has a mental breakdown and Clooney has to clean it up. Matt and Adam wanted more Clooney fixing. Brad Pitt is a different kind of fixer in "Killing Them Softly" (2012), a film centered around the aftermath of a poker game robbery. Next, failed comedians is the theme with "King of Comedy" (1982) and "Joker" (2019).Thanks for listening!Did we get something wrong? Have your own recommendations? We pay tribute to Ray Liotta (1954-2022) with a focus on the later stage of his career. It's Andrew Dominik's 2012 neo-noir Killing Them Softly vs the 2021 Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark. Which one will win and enter the canon?? Which one will lose and enter the trash canon and Brett and Joe can never watch it again for the rest of their lives??? It's our 50th episode! To celebrate this, Asif asks Ali about his top 3 favorite comedy specials (1:31). Ali picks Dave Chapelle's ‘Killing Them Softly', Wanda Sykes' Im'a Be Me' and Eddie Izzard's ‘Dress to Kill' and discusses what makes these specials so good. Then Ali asks Asif about the biological basis of why we develop laughter (32:04). Asif goes over how laughter and humour develops in babies and what they find ‘funny'. Then, Asif talks about the areas of the brain where laughter originates and what areas of the brain when injured can cause you to lose your sense of humour.
