Show #830 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 5th July 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. IONITY CELEBRATES 250TH FAST-CHARGING STATION IN EUROPE "IONITY, the European fast-charging network, founded in 2017 by BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company and the Volkswagen Group with Porsche AG, and joined by Hyundai Motor Group (Hyundai and Kia) in 2019, celebrates its 250th charging location." says InsideEVs: "The company announced the news on July 3, 2020, about six months since the milestone of 200 stations. The pace of new installations was probably significantly lowered by the COVID-19 lockdown, so we are wondering whether the target of 400 locations by the end of 2020 is still the case. IONITY's website shows that there are 251 stations installed, while another 49 are under construction. Most of the chargers are supplied by Tritium (55%: 569 chargers at 139 stations), followed by ABB (41%: 424 chargers at 108 stations) plus 5 stations with a total of 28 Porsche Engineering chargers." https://insideevs.com/news/432240/ionity-250-fast-charging-station-europe/ TESLA INSTALLS 500TH SUPERCHARGER IN UK & IRELAND "Tesla continues to expand its electric vehicle charging network around the world, following the announcement of its CEO Elon Musk. To meet growing demand, 500 Supercharger devices have now been installed in the UK and Ireland. The first Superchargers appeared in the UK in 2014 and are now available in 63 locations. Tesla has already installed 42 new Superchargers this year, which confirms the company's intention to expand globally." reports Tesmanian: "Previously, the company’s Supercharger Network expansion has slowed down to allow for the ramp in the production of Supercharger V3 units. V3 Supercharging uses the same principle as Tesla’s current Superchargers but adds a 1MW power cabinet to the equation. That means 250kW peak charging rates per car. To date, eight V3 Superchargers have been installed in the UK - all at the brand’s Park Royal service center in London. Model 3 is compatible with the device as standard, and models S and X come with an adapter that allows them to use the same system." https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-installs-500th-supercharger-in-uk-ireland TESLA UPDATES WARRANTY ON PROBLEMATIC MEDIA UNIT AND TOUCHSCREEN "Tesla has updated its warranty for its already problematic media unit and touchscreen with a ridiculously shorter two-year or 25,000-mile limit." is the wording of electrek today: "As we previously reported, Tesla had a problem with the embedded Multi-Media-Card memory (eMMC) in its original MCU (the central media unit with a touchscreen). It is being overwritten to the point of failure, and many early Tesla owners are having to replace it. This week, Tesla updated the warranty on replacement MCUs and slashed the length of coverage in half." https://electrek.co/2020/07/04/tesla-updates-warranty-problema BUICK TO INTRODUCE VELITE 6 PHEV IN CHINATIC-MEDIA-UNIT-TOUCHSCREEN/ "Buick is adding the VELITE 6 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) to its new energy vehicle (NEV) portfolio in China. The model is expected to be launched this month. The VELITE 6 PHEV will be powered by Buick eMotion electric drive technology that leverages GM’s global electrification expertise." reports Green Car Congress. And don't get that confused with the Buick Velite 7 I've previously reported on: "Based on a variant of the BEV2 platform that the Chevrolet Bolt EV debuted in 2016, the brand-new Buick Velite 7 EV includes a state-of-the-art battery pack that will allow it to offer an electric range of up to 500 kilometers – equivalent to about 311 miles – with a full charge, calculated under the conditions of the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). In China, this makes it the most efficient electric crossover in its class. Aesthetically, the Velite 7 EV boasts a relatively simple design with a distinctive front fascia, and might share a few body panels with the upcoming Chevrolet Bolt EUV. The company has announced that the new high-performance lithium-ion modular battery that mounts the new Buick Velite 7 has a higher energy density, thanks to improved cell chemistry. Additionally, the battery pack has an advanced structural design and BMS thermal management system that meets GM’s global standards" as per GM Authority https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/07/20200704-buick.html https://gmauthority.com/blog/2020/06/brand-new-buick-velite-7-ev-crossover-unveiled-in-china/ TESLA SUPERCHARGING USAGE HITS PRE-COVID 19 HIGHS @elonmusk: "North American Supercharger usage is now at pre-covid high, Europe about a week behind, China & Asia-Pacific in general doing great" TEPCO TO REUSE CHINESE EV BATTERIES FOR ENERGY STORAGE "Japanese utility Tokyo Electric Power Co. Holdings will launch a storage battery business utilizing used electric-vehicle batteries from China, Nikkei has learned. The plan is to assemble used batteries into a containerized energy storage system to assist renewable-energy plants" writes Nikkei Asian Review: "Transmission and distribution unit Tepco Power Grid will purchase used EV batteries from trading companies in China and elsewhere, combining 20 to 30 vehicles' worth of them into a container-type battery. The batteries will then be sold to solar and other renewable-energy plants for 30% to 50% less than new batteries. Tepco hopes to grow the business into a new revenue stream. EV batteries are generally replaced after seven to 10 years, but the used batteries still have about 70% of their original capacity" https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Energy/Tepco-to-reuse-Chinese-EV-batteries-for-energy-storage AUDI, ENBW TO TURN ELECTRIC CAR BATTERIES INTO GRID SUPPORT TOOLS "Audi and utility EnBW are setting up an electric car battery operation at EnBW's Heilbronn plant to build scaleable storage facilities by the end of this year, drawing on retired batteries to help power grids." according to Car and Bike.com: "Electric vehicle battery recycling and reuse has become a priority for car and battery makers while renewable energy companies face the problem of how to absorb surpluses of wind and solar power to avoid waste and disruption to the stability of grids, slowing the transition to purely carbon-free energy system. Audi has been testing the behaviour of electric car batteries, which represent a third of an EV's unit costs, in a research setting in Berlin for three years. The batteries to be used for the commercial phase of the project come from test cars, which have run hundreds of thousands of kilometres, Kupfer said. "A used EV battery still can function for another three to 10 years," he said." https://www.carandbike.com/news/audi-enbw-to-turn-electric-car-batteries-into-grid-support-tools-2257009 ELECTRIC CAR SCRAPPAGE SCHEME REJECTED BY GOVERNMENT MINISTERS "Hopes of a new scrappage scheme reportedly offering up to £6,000 towards the cost of an electric car have been dashed now that the government appears to have rejected the idea." says the RAC: "The Times reports that a letter from Rachel Maclean, junior minister for transport and the environment, reads: “the government has no plans at this stage to introduce a scrappage scheme.” A similar scrappage scheme was dismissed in 2018 as ministers believed it was “difficult to deliver [and] potentially open to abuse.” At present, the government provides a grant of up to £3,000 only towards the purchase of plug-in cars, although this was cut by £500 in March." https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/news/motoring-news/electric-car-scrappage-scheme-rejected-by-government-ministers/ [mention for Premium Partners] You can listen to all 829 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. NISSAN LEAF SALES IN JAPAN DROP BY 51% IN OCTOBER 2019 "Nissan is not able to prevent the LEAF from falling in its home market and in October the rate of decrease even accelerated!" reports InsideEVs: "Combined with a decrease in the U.S. and probably not strong results in Europe (at least not good enough to release a sales report), Nissan's EV outcome is disappointing, especially for a pioneer that undertook a tremendous effort to bring the LEAF to the market. Ten years later, the best LEAF ever, available in two battery options (40 kWh and 62 kWh) is selling at a lower level than a few years ago. In Japan, only 820 LEAFs were sold in October (down 51% year-over-year), although LEAF was still the #40 most popular model." https://insideevs.com/news/381088/nissan-leaf-sales-japan-october-2019/ BMW 320E TOURING MODEL COULD BE UNVEILED NEXT YEAR "This year the Bavarians launched an impressive number of plug-in hybrids, including the 330e PHEV. However, in the future, more plug-in hybrids will be launched, including the 320e in the 3 Series range." according to BMW Blog: "During a recent meeting held in Munich, highlighting the results BMW achieved over the first nine months of the year, BMW CEO Oliver Zipse talked about hybrid Touring versions coming next year. “By the end of the year, we will have 12 fully electric and plug-in hybrid models on the roads. Customers desire our plug-in hybrids because they can use them as their only vehicle,” said Zipse. “The 3 Series Touring will also be available as a plug-in hybrid variant next year,” he added." https://www.bmwblog.com/2019/11/06/bmw-320e-touring-unveiled-next-year/ VOLKSWAGEN TO INTRODUCE ID. SPACE VIZZION "Volkswagen has released design sketches of the 7th model it intends to build on the MEB electric car platform. The car is known for the time being as the ID. SPACE VIZZION." says Clean Technica: "The ID. SPACE VIZZION is a wagon of tomorrow that combines the aerodynamic characteristics of a Gran Turismo with the spaciousness of an SUV. Stylistically, the ID. SPACE VIZZION follows the design DNA of the ID. family, yet has a completely independent and progressive character.” https://cleantechnica.com/2019/11/10/volkswagen-to-introduce-id-space-vizzion-at-la-auto-show-november-19/ PORSCHE CAYMAN ELECTRIC RUMORED TO HAVE 400 HORSEPOWER "Porsche isn't hanging around with its electrification strategy. While the world's attention is firmly upon the Taycan, Stuttgart's first full production electric vehicle (EV), its engineers are busily working on a more affordable battery-powered model. The replacements for the entry-level 718 Boxster and Cayman twins will be all-electric, underlining how serious Zuffenhausen is about jumping onboard the electric battlebus." writes Car Magazine: "Our intel suggests the following specs: Powertrain Twin electric motors, rear- or all-wheel drive Output System total 400bhp Chassis Aluminium monocoque Due on sale 2023" https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/spy-shots/porsche/electric-boxster-and-cayman-sports-car/ GM SELLS LORDSTOWN FACTORY TO THE OFFSHOOT OF A STRUGGLING EV STARTUP "GM says the factory’s new purpose will help establish Ohio as a hub for EV manufacturing." says The Verge: "But the Lordstown plant now rests in the hands of a small company that finds itself trying to do what almost no other startup has been able to do: build an entirely new American automaker from (almost) the ground up. To be clear, Lordstown Motors is a new company that was specifically set up to buy the Lordstown plant. It was created by Steve Burns, the founder and former CEO of struggling electric vehicle startup Workhorse. Workhorse has sold electric delivery vans in the past, and is in the running for the contract to build the United States Postal Service’s next-generation vehicle. But the company has recently found itself in dire financial straits. The startup has lost nearly $38 million in 2019, and generated just $4,258 in sales this past quarter." https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/8/20954956/gm-lordstown-motors-factory-workhorse-electric-vehicles-trump-ev VOLKSWAGEN STARTS PRE-PRODUCTION IN FIRST CHINA PLANT FOCUSED ONLY ON E-MOBILITY "The new plant of The SAIC Volkswagen joint venture’s new plant—which is dedicated to production of all electric vehicles on Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB)—has been completed in Anting, Shanghai. Celebrating the start of pre-production, a first China-specific all-electric Volkswagen ID. model rolled off the production line." says Green Car Congress. It took only 12 months to see the completion of this innovative factory. Congratulations to our colleagues in Anting, who will further prepare to produce the first China-model of the Volkswagen ID. family here in Shanghai. We will speed up our NEV offensive even more, as we expect further e-mobility market growth. —Dr. Stephan Wöllenstein, CEO of Volkswagen Group China https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/11/20191109-vwchina.html CHEVROLET MENLO EV MAKES CHINA DEBUT "General Motors has a total of 20 new electric cars coming by 2023, but don't think they're all for the US. China is the largest market for electric vehicles in the entire world and GM is absolutely catering to that reality." reports CNET: "On that note, China's latest electric-car entree is served. This is the Chevy Menlo EV that debuted on Friday. Before you ask, no, this isn't coming to the US. A Chevy representative confirmed to Roadshow that the model is specific to China and the company has zero intention of bringing it to the US. The range figure is pretty close to the Buick Velite 6's as well, which likely means the two share a lot of technology. The Velite 6 is another China-only EV that GM sells locally. The Menlo EV, however, is the first electric car Chevy will sell in China." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/chevy-menlo-electric-car-crossover-china/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… What do you prefer, the carrot or the stick? Show #445 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 16th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. ANDERS HOVE – PATREON EXECUTIVE PRODUCER: “I was listening this morning to your guesses about the pronunciation of AI.ME. Since the concept was released at the Shanghai auto show, and could be intended for China, this is probably a play on words, since "ai" is the verb "to love." It'S pronounced the same as "aye" in "aye aye, captain." So "aye ... me.". Reasons to have Sentry Mode: An email from Brian Thompson. “Willie Singletary, Council Candidate Hits Tesla Model 3 with Escalade and leaves scene.” AUTO SHANGHAI 2019: THE ELECTRIC VEHICLES TO LOOK FORWARD TO "it's no surprise that the Auto Shanghai 2019, which begins on April 16, will have more EVs and EV concepts on display than you can point a finger at. Here's some of the ones that we think will stand out." says Overdrive.in. Their picks are: Possibly of most interest to us is the production version of the Renault K-ZE. As the looks suggest, this will be the electric version of the Renault Kwid. It will be based on a heavily modified version of the Kwid's CMF-A platform and will have a 250 km range. The Buick Velite 6 is a heavily revised version of the second generation Chevrolet Volt. The PHEV version debut first and be powered by the same 1.5 litre petrol motor and 18.4 kWh battery pack. The full EV version is expected to have a 85 kW motor with a claimed range of 291 km." They also rate the NIO EP7 performance sedan, the Audi Q2 etron which is like an electric A2 for China only, the Aston Martin Rapide E and the Geely GE 11 - "the first global model from Geely's newly-created EV brand "Geely New Energy". Internationally it will be available under the Geometry brand. " http://overdrive.in/news-cars-auto/auto-shanghai-2019-the-electric-vehicles-to-look-forward-to/ RENAULT KWID EV (CITY K-ZE) REVEALED AT SHANGHAI MOTOR SHOW "Renault has showcased the production version of the Kwid EV at the 2019 Shanghai Motor Show. The EV is based on the same CMF-A platform as the Kwid, albeit with a few modifications to accommodate batteries and an electric motor. However the specifications of the same haven't been revealed yet." reports ZigWheels: "while it has not been officially revealed, the City K-ZE will have an approximate range close to 250Km. Inside, the cabin remains largely similar to the Kwid with a functional setup. Key highlights include an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system which also gets online navigation, real time monitoring for EV features, 4G WiFi and voice recognition. the Renault City K-ZE packs PM2.5 sensors and an air quality control system, which evaluates cabin air quality and switches between interior and exterior air circulation automatically. It also gets features like a rear camera and a tyre pressure monitoring system." https://www.zigwheels.com/news-features/news/renault-kwid-ev-city-kze-revealed-at-shanghai-motor-show/33576/ NEW NIO ET PREVIEW ELECTRIC CAR REVEALED IN SHANGHAI "At the Auto Shanghai 2019, Chinese EV startup NIO showed off its all new sedan product lineup with the ET Preview and exhibited its entire NIO Power service solution as well as some cutting-edge technologies such as the 220kW permanent magnet synchronous motor electric drivetrain." reports Gasgoo for InsideEVs.com "The EV maker also showcased such products as the high-performance electric flagship ES8 SUV; the high-performance long-range, intelligent electric ES6 SUV; the ultrafast electric car, the EP9; the NIO EVE Vision car and NIO Formula E Team car, the NIO 004." https://insideevs.com/new-nio-et-preview-electric-car-revealed/ KARMA DEBUTS BEAUTIFUL PININFARINA DESIGNED ELECTRIC COUPE "Aside from the Karma Revero GT (yes, it’s an updated variant of the Fisker Karma from 2016) which is a production vehicle going on sale soon, Karma Automotive has an interesting two-door concept debuting at the 2019 Auto Shanghai. The so-called Pininfarina GT is based on the Revero GT and, as its name suggests, has been designed by Pininfarina." according to Anthony Karr from Motor1.com: "The official press release says this is the “first result of a partnership with Pininfarina, the iconic Italian design and engineering house,” which hints at potential future products developed in cooperation between the two companies. While the coupe has the exterior dimensions of the Revero GT, the overall appearance is sportier thanks to the shorter rear overhang and the long hood. We believe the two-door vehicle has the same powertrain as the Revero GT, which means there’s a BMW-sourced 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo engine, an onboard electric generator, and two electric motors for a combined output of 535 horsepower (399 kilowatts) and 550 pound-feet (746 lb-ft) of torque." https://insideevs.com/karma-debuts-pininfarina-electric-coupe/ ELECTRA MECCANICA SHIPS SOLO FROM CHINA TO NORTH AMERICA "Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker, Electra Meccanica Vehicle, has signed a contract with Crane Worldwide Logistics to move its single-passenger, three-wheel Solo model from its assembly plant in Chongqing to the ports of Los Angeles in the US and Vancouver, Canada." according to the website Automotive Logistics: "Electra Meccanica is currently ramping up mass production of its Solo electric vehicle at its Chongqing manufacturing facility in China for delivery to customers there and abroad in 2019. According to official figures from the EV maker it has 64,000 pre-orders on its books." https://automotivelogistics.media/news/157291 HYUNDAI & H2E: 1,600 FUEL CELL TRUCKS FOR EUROPE "Hyundai and the Swiss company H2 Energy (H2E) have confirmed their commitment to establishing a joint venture called Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility. The JV’s first goal is to open up the European hydrogen mobility ecosystem with fuel cell trucks." writes Carrie Hamel for electrive.com: "Hyundai will supply a total of 1,600 fuel cell-powered heavy trucks to Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility from 2019 to 2025 – 600 more than originally announced in a memorandum of understanding signed in 2018 between H2E and Hyundai. The Swiss company H2E specialises in the production and supply of renewable hydrogen in Switzerland with subsidiaries in Germany, Norway and Austria and they will be responsible for marketing the fleet." https://www.electrive.com/2019/04/15/hyundai-h2e-1600-fuel-cell-trucks-for-european-market/ MINI SURVEY CLAIMS CUSTOMERS ARE HAPPY WITH 75 MILES OF EV RANGE "In this survey from MINI USA, the brand asked 1,004 adults over the age of 18 (502 men and 502 women) a series of questions to determine what a necessary average range. While the questions asked were not disclosed to us, the brand claims that a resulting average range of 75 miles was deemed “sufficient”." says BMW blog: "MINI also learned from this survey that the majority of customers find EVs to be best used in city driving or for commuting. The latter of which is assuming it’s a relatively short commute. This information is likely to factor into the size of battery packs used in upcoming EV MINIs. The first one to come is the upcoming MINI E, which is said to use the same 42.2 kWh battery pack as the BMW i3 and get around 120 miles of range." https://www.bmwblog.com/2019/04/15/mini-survey-claims-customers-are-happy-with-75-miles-of-ev-range/ TESLA'S CONSTANT PRICE CHANGES FRUSTRATE BUYERS "Last week, Tesla changed the prices on their cars again. In just the last few months there have been a huge number of price changes, particularly on the Model 3" says a Forbes article which goes on to track every price change since, a 12 point list which follows the changing face of Autopilot and the $35,000 Model 3 which came and (partially) went. It's a toughtful article by Brad Templeton and talks about buyers remorse, how cellphones have been commodotised. "Elon Musk has had a few things to say about this. First, he points out that prices on other maker's cars fluctuate all the time due to specials, dealer rebates, and plain old negotiation. He says Tesla is just doing it transparently and should not be blamed for doing the right thing. There is some merit to this, but the fact that somebody can get $3,000 off a car by negotiating at the dealer does not affect the price of existing cars nearly as much. He also points out that Teslas, unlike other cars before them, keep getting new features with software updates, which are given to all owners whose cars can handle them." https://www.forbes.com/sites/bradtempleton/2019/04/15/teslas-constant-price-changes-frustrate-buyers-even-more-is-likely-as-cars-become-computers/#6bba873e5da9 TOYOTA SELLS ELECTRIC CAR TECHNOLOGY TO CHINESE STARTUP IN RETURN FOR GREEN CAR CREDITS "Toyota has agreed to sell its electric car technology to Chinese startup Singulato, in a move which will give it preferential rights to buy green credits under China’s new quota system for electric vehicles (EVs)." according to City AM newspaper: "The green car credit system, introduced in January, requires a significant portion of car makers’ production or imports in China must be electric or hybrid. Those that do not meet the quota themselves can purchase credits from rivals that exceed it, but if they do not have enough credits they face government fines for their operations in China. Singulato is developing a mini EV which it hopes to release later this year. This will generate credits for the startup, some of which Toyota will then purchase. Toyota has already said that initially it won’t be able to meet its quotas without buying credits from others." http://www.cityam.com/276295/toyota-sells-electric-car-technology-chinese-startup-return CHEVY BOLT EUV NAME TRADEMARKED, ELECTRIC CROSSOVER COMING? "An interesting patent filing by General Motors hints the upcoming second electric vehicle from the automaker could be a high-riding machine. First unearthed by GM Authority, the Bolt EUV moniker has been trademarked by GM earlier this month and will be used for “motor land vehicles, namely, automobiles.” says Motor1.com today: "As GM Authority reports, the name is probably going to be used for Chevrolet’s next Bolt-based EV. In March this year, the American manufacturer confirmed it will build the all-electric car at its Orion facility where the Bolt is currently produced. A new $300-million investment in the factory was also confirmed and a plan for approximately 400 new jobs at the site." https://www.motor1.com/news/344658/chevrolet-bolt-euv-trademark-rumors/ WHY TESLA DEFINES AMERICAN LUXURY, NOT CADILLAC OR LINCOLN "Americans are at our best when we look forward instead of at what others are doing. Cadillac and Lincoln used to epitomize this idea." says MotorTrend: "While Cadillac has spent the past three decades copying BMW's homework, and Lincoln spent the same time building cost-cut, rebadged Fords and Mercurys, the soul of American luxury escaped Detroit. Today, it has settled in sunny California. Tesla's tech and engineering is class leading, and delivers benchmark EV performance and range. And the vehicles are (relatively) expensive, requiring early adopters to be of a certain socio-economic status. They have become part of the fabric of today's luxury consumer society, a car many buyers of mainstream automobiles now aspire to own because of what it would say about their own status. Tesla is therefore a genuine modern luxury brand." https://www.motortrend.com/news/why-tesla-defines-american-luxury-not-cadillac-lincoln/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week.
