South Australia’s History Festival gets a fitting soundtrack in episode 432, and it arrives in three distinct voices: a geneticist-historian overturning stones in founding-era South Australia, Mr South Australia himself bringing context and colour to every corner of the conversation, and an original paddle steamer shanty that had Keith Conlon attempting to haul imaginary ropes. Dr Samantha Battams is back for her fourth visit to the Adelaide Show, this time with a book that drops her own family tree right into the founding moments of this state. There is no SA Drink of the Week in this episode. The interview was recorded at the State Library with a room booking that had a firm end time, so Steve, Keith, and Samantha made the most of every minute with stories instead. The Musical Pilgrimage this episode is Steve Davis and the Virtualosos performing Away Away: The Canally Crew Song, an original river shanty written in tribute to the paddle steamer PS Canally, which is being restored at Morgan and set to relaunch in late May 2026, and the song features in Keith and Steve’s show, History Hit Parade show at the Mercury Cinema. Running Sheet: All Singing All Reading South Australian History Festival 00:00:00 Intro Introduction 00:00:00 SA Drink Of The Week There is no SA Drink Of The Week this week. 00:02:09 Dr Samantha Battams on Paving the Way May is South Australian History Festival month, and if you want to know why that matters, consider this: the western suburb we now call Grange was once known as Reedbeds, where Captain Charles Sturt made his first home while the colony was being developed. One of our guest’s ancestors was the gardener there. Dr Samantha Battams has written a book that puts her own family tree right in the founding moments of this state, and she’s launching it at the History Festival on 15th May. Samantha, has previously been on The Adelaide Show in 249 – Captain Harry Butler and his Red Devil, 279 – The Secret Art Of Poisoning, and 344 – True Crime SA style. The western suburb we now know as Grange was once called Reedbeds. Captain Charles Sturt made his home there in the colony’s earliest days, and one of Dr Samantha Battams’ ancestors was his gardener. That’s the kind of connection Paving the Way is full of. Battams’ three-times great-grandfather, Johann Gramp, arrived at Kangaroo Island in 1837 as an eighteen-year-old orphan aboard a vessel that wrecked shortly after. He had lost both parents by age seven, worked for a baker in Bavaria, and made his way to Hamburg where the South Australia Company was recruiting German labourers. He would go on to establish what Keith Conlon describes as the first commercial vineyard near Jacobs Creek. Keith also notes that he gets there by a roundabout route, and Samantha fills in the Bavarian versus Prussian distinctions that get flattened when viewed from Australian distance. The animosity ran deep enough that during the First World War, Bavarians were reportedly directing Allied forces toward Prussian positions. The Prussian Lutheran refugees who arrived sponsored by George Fife Angus get their own thread. Their pastor Kavel had travelled to London and secured passage for a group who had been holding secret chapel meetings in barns rather than accept the king’s new prayer book. One Schulz ancestor was accused by the pastor of leaving for earthly reasons rather than faith. Steve’s response: “I think had it been the time of the prosperity gospel, he would’ve been welcomed with open arms. “From Germany to Ireland, and the Fahy family from County Clare. Edmund Fahy arrived with two younger sisters, one of them just ten years old, and the family was almost immediately separated. Edmund headed to the Kapunda mines while the girls went south with an aunt. Samantha spent years untangling the network of Irish immigrants who came out together, sponsored one another, and intermarried across the colony. One thread leads to Dave Graney. “I’ve always loved Dave Graney,” Battams says. “I didn’t know I was related to him.” The Rumbleow family at Encounter Bay ran the first tourist operations in the area. Caroline Rumbleow, who married a man named John Cakebread (“What a name,” says Steve), was said to be the inspiration for a character in the novel Paving the Way by Simpson Newland, which also gives Battams’ book its title. Family accounts suggest Newland followed Caroline to the Ballarat goldfields and asked her to leave her husband. It did not eventuate. Samantha undertook a cultural consultation before writing sections involving Aboriginal people. Old newspaper language was either replaced with more appropriate terminology in square brackets or, in one case involving a funeral pyre, stripped of its sensationalist framing while the story itself was kept. She also describes firsthand colonial accounts of a corroboree of 500 people on the banks of the Torrens near what is now the Paradise Bridge. The interview closes on a revelation hidden since 1890. Battams had her DNA tested to find her adopted father’s biological family, and dismissed a recurring surname, Hazelhurst, as irrelevant to her mother’s side. A later ancestry update showed 25 per cent of her DNA tracing to northwest England and Wales. Following the Hazelhurst name led to Christchurch, New Zealand, and to the conclusion that her great-grandmother Edith Thompson was already pregnant when she married, with a father other than the man recorded. The cover of Paving the Way is a photograph of Edith and Battams’ grandfather. “The true story had been kept from 1890 to 2025,” Battams says. Paving the Way is being launched at the 2026 History Festival on 15 May. Dr Lanie Anderson, a previous Adelaide Show guest (107 – Lainie Anderson: View from the hills), will launch the book. 00:27:59 Musical Pilgrimage In the Musical Pilgrimage, we feature Steve Davis & The Virtualosos‘ “river shanty” song, Away Away (The Canally Crew Song). Steve Davis wrote this original river shanty after time spent aboard the PS Marion, sister vessel to the PS Canally, a paddle steamer launched in 1907 that is now being restored at Morgan ahead of a relaunch in late May 2026. Keith Conlon puts the song in context: Morgan once had queues of paddle steamers and six freight trains a day departing with river cargo. He also produces a story about a paddle steamer loaded with materials to build a pub at Bourke that ran aground in a drought and only floated free two years later, by which point the pub had been built by other means. Away Away is one of ten original songs Steve has written about South Australia for History Hit Parade, the show he and Keith Conlon are performing at Mercury Cinema during the 2026 South Australian History Festival. Keith is confident audiences will want to sing along. A stage jig from Keith is, in his own assessment, highly in doubt. Booking details are in this link: History Hit Parade tickets and information. It’s on Monday, May 11, 11am, and Sunday, May 17, at 4pm and it will simply be an enjoyable show of historical anecdotes, fun, and music.Support the show: https://theadelaideshow.com.au/listen-or-download-the-podcast/adelaide-in-crowd/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Bayern Munich can take another step towards the Bundesliga title when they host Borriusa Monchonglbach, and everything points towards another strong showing from the league leaders. The Bavarians have won their last five matches in all competitions, building serious momentum at the perfect stage of the season. They sit 11 points clear of Borussia Dortmund at the top of the table and look firmly in control of the title race. Their resilience was on full display in Der Klassiker, where a dramatic late goal via Kimmich secured a vital win over Dortmund.
Billi breaks down the betting lines for Matchday 19 Bündesliga slate. Bayern Munich no longer boast an unbeaten league record after they suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat in last Saturday's home meeting with Augsburg. The Bavarians appeared to be on course for a 1-0 victory until they conceded two goals in the space of six minutes in the latter stages of proceedings at the Allianz Arena. While they would have been disappointed with that result, Bayern are still in a strong position to retain their Bundesliga crown, with eight points separating them from Borussia Dortmund in second position.
Due to time restraints, this episode features Bündesliga matches and matches that would've been covered on the European Show. The game of the weekend in Germany sees Germany host Leverkusen, however, the gap between these two sides has significantly widened.Bayern Munich's winning start to the season continued as they thrashed Koln in midweek, and the free-scoring Bavarians are widely etc to deliver another dominant display against Bayer Leverkusen. Vincent Kompany's side have racked up 51 goals en route to 14 successive victories, and their four-goal haul in midweek was the 12th time they have scored three or more goals this season. Bayer Leverkusen conceded seven times to PSG earlier this season and have shipped two or more goals in two of their last four, so Die Bayern could run riot again at the Allianz Arena.
Vincent Kompany was rewarded with a new contract following Bayern Munich's 2-1 Klassiker win on Saturday and he celebrated the occasion by landing a 12th successive win on Tuesday, leading his side to a 4-0 rout of Club Brugge.High-scoring wins have been the story of the Bavarians' season, with the champions netting 27 goals while prevailing in all seven of their Bundesliga games, and the trend is likely to continue when they take on Borussia Monchengladbach in a bottom-vs-top clash on Saturday. The Bundesliga basement boys have carried over their form from the end of last term and are still searching for a first three points of the campaign. Their winless run in the league now stands at 14 games and it is hard to envisage that being snapped when the champions come to town.

Welcome back to the Always Bayern Chelsea show. We've got some weekend Bundesliga and English Premiere League matches to react to in this one. While Jim & I were away from home for our dear friends wedding, we still made sure to catch Bayern Munich playing Hoffenheim & Chelsea taking on Manchester United. We open things up in this one by breaking down Bayern Munich's 4-1 win over Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga on Saturday morning. Bayern continues their run of great form with another impressive win. Vincent Kompany decided to rotate heavily in this one, and while the team looked disjointed at first, missed Hoffenheim chances and Harry Kane's unstoppable form saw Bayern pull ahead. We take a look here at lineups/tactics, match highlights, player performances, scoring/substitutions, and of course, hand out match awards. Hat-trick Harry struck again with Serge Gnabry adding to the tally with a late goal. Lennart Karl had an assist as well. The Bavarians have a quick turnaround now, facing Werder Bremen on Friday in the Bundesliga. On the other hand, Chelsea continued their stretch of poor and strange luck at Old Trafford facing off with Manchester United. This one ended in a 1-2 loss for Enzo Maresca's men with keeper Robert Sanchez being sent off in the opening minutes of the match with a red card. We break down everything this one had to offer from lineups/tactics, to match highlights, to player performances, to scoring and substitutions. Trevoh Chalobah scored Chelsea's lone goal in this effort, assisted by none other than Reece James. Now, Chelsea moves on to face Lincoln City in the EFL Carabao Cup before Brighton in the EPL over the weekend. Stay tuned for full coverage of all of these exciting upcoming matches. Welcome to the Always Bayern Chelsea show. Football season is well underway now and the 120th episode is a complete recap of the summer 2025 transfer window. Danny and Jim break down the incomings, outgoings, and more as well as rate the entire window for both Chelsea Football Club and Bayern Munich. Buckle up because this was one of the most crazy windows in recent memory. And don't worry YES we will be streaming the Champions League match between Bayern Munich and Chelsea. As always Chelsea did A LOT of business. Key incomings for Enzo Maresca included. Jamie Gittens, Alejandro Garnacho, Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Estevao, Buonanotte, Dario Essugo, Andrey Santos, Jorrel Hato, Paez, Penders, and Sarr. Outgoings were Nico Jackson, Broja, Felix, Madueke, Christo, Ugochukwu, Mathis Amougou. Carney, KDH, Matos, Chilwell, Gilchrist, Humphreys, Veiga, Beach, Bergstrom, Bettinelli, Kepa, and Petrovic while players loaned out including partner club Strasburg were Paez, Penders, Sarr, Anselmino, Castledine, Kellyman, Samuels-Smith, Wiley, and Nicolas Jackson to Bayern Munich of course. Chelsea netted about 5 million euros in profit this window. Pretty impressive business. Bayern Munich's transfer window was less desirable. The club notably struck out on their main transfer target dating back many years Florian Wirtz, other key misses were Nico Williams, Bradley Barcola, and sadly many more. The lack of alignment between the supervisory board, sporting board, and even coaching staff made this a difficult window for Vincent Kompany and the Bavarians. Luckily there were some key incomings including Diaz, Tah, and Bischof. With Nicolas Jackson joining on loan from Chelsea. Sadly Bayern Munich lost key players who are already missed by the club, some of which left on a free transfer including Sane, Dier, and Thomas Muller. Other outgoings were Tel, Coman, Wanner, Aznou, Kratzig, and Vidovic. Players that left on loan were Palhinha, Kusi-Asare, Zaragoza, Peretz, Ibrahimovic, Zvonarek, and Buchmann. It's yet to be seen if this window will improve the squad for the long run but Bayern did net roughly 10 millions euros in addition to massive savings in the wage depart. Welcome back to the Always Bayern Chelsea show for the 118th episode. We've finally caught our breath and are able to review the thrilling DFB Pokal first round match where Bayern Munich narrowly beat 3. Liga side Wehen Wiesbaden 3-2, advancing in the tournament. We hit all the stops in this episode also talking about the potential Nico Jackson transfer AND previewing the upcoming Bundesliga matchup between Bayern Munich and FC Augsburg as well as the English Premiere League matchup between Chelsea and Fulham. We kick things off with an introduction and a FULL breakdown of the big German Cup opening round matchup for Bayern Munich against Wehen. We talk about Kompany's varied lineup/tactics and why we were fans of integrating youngsters into the mix for this one. Then we talk about all of the match highlights, scoring/substitutions, player performances, and give out match awards. Everything looked to be going to plan for the Bavarians when Harry Kane scored a penalty, and Michael Olise scored putting them up 2-0. Things then went off the rails as Bayern missed chances & allowed two goals when the defense fell asleep. Luckily Kane came to the rescue in the closing seconds of the match scoring the third and final goal of the match assisted by Josip Stanišić. We then dive into a full preview of Bayern's Bundesliga clash this weekend with FC Augsburg. We break down what we foresee Kompany to roll with as the Starting XI, potential tactics, key players to watch in this one, and of course a prediction of the final score. Then, we break down the rumors swirling around Chelsea striker Nico Jackson and that he may be on his way to Munich for a loan deal. What would this mean for both teams? Finally, we close out by previewing Chelsea's EPL matchup with Fulham. We talk about past matches, who Enzo Maresca may roll with, tactics/strategies, as well as important players to watch out for. Subscribe to the Always Bayern Chelsea YouTube channel to stay up to date for all of the crazy summer special videos and join this growing community of football fans! We kick off this episode with a brief introduction of what we've been up to and recapping the most recent transfer news. In fact, Danny just put out a video ranking all of the players Bayern Munich has been linked to this summer transfer window already. See above to check that one out. Next, we jump into the meat and potatoes of this episode. Breaking down what we learned at the CWC this summer now that the dust has settled. Bayern was bounced in the quarter finals by Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea avenged the Bavarians by beating PSG to win the whole thing. We start with Bayern Munich, where there may be more questions than answers at this point. Danny questions whether or not Bayern can be world beaters this season, how they will fill the Jamal Musiala and Thomas Muller sized holes in the squad, whether or not they will be able to make any impact signings, and if Vincent Kompany is up to the task to grow this team in his second season as manager. Then, we move on to Chelsea where we glaze Enzo Maresca's World Cup performance, talk about all of the new signings, and what Chelsae's prospects will be for this season going forward in the English Premier League and the Champions League. Welcome to the Always Bayern Chelsea show. The 105th episode of the show sees Danny flying solo ranking all of the individual players that have been linked to Bayern Munich in the summer 2024/2025 transfer window on a tier list from S all the way to D. Subscribe to the Always Bayern Chelsea YouTube channel to stay up to date with all of the latest transfer news, previews, breakdowns, predictions, and so much more. Danny kicks things off with a short introduction previewing all of the cool incoming videos and plans that Always Bayern Chelsea has on the docket. He then goes into detailing looking at all the players that Bayern Munich has been linked to this transfer window and rating them via a tier system. Many things go into these rankings including a players talent level, floor and ceiling, as well as how well they will fit into Bayern Munich's current system under manager Vincent Kompany. He also looks at whether or not Bayern has a plan for these players going forward. He's predicting S or A tier players to instantly improve Bayern Munich's chances at winning multiple trophies and making a deep run in European competitions this upcoming 2025/2026 season, while C or D tier players might not have a role on the team at the moment or would likely only be used as depth pieces. Some players discussed like Florian Wirtz, Nico Williams, and Bradely Barcola will not be joining Bayern this season while others like Luis Diaz or Nick Woltemade seem to have a better shot. Danny mostly talks about attacking players since Bayern's main transfer strategy at the moment seems to be around filling that hole at LW as well as finding someone to back up Jamal Musiala and Harry Kane. The Bavarians will be losing Leroy Sane and Thomas Muller and are looking to fill those shoes and bolster the attack. Other players discussed include Chelsea's Christopher Nkunku, Xavi Simons, Rafael Leao, Eberechi Eze, Kaoru Mitoma, Marcus Rashford, Leandro Trossard, Rodrygo, Cody Gapko, and more! He even talks about the transfers that have already been done like Tom Bischof and Jonathan Tah. Subscribe to the YouTube channel to stay updated! Drop us a comment with your thoughts! Welcome to the Always Bayern Chelsea show. The 102nd episode of the show sees Danny breaking down Bayern Munich's heartbreaking loss in the FIFA Club World Cup to Paris Saint-Germain. The match was devastating for so many reasons, some bigger than football. Subscribe to the Always Bayern Chelsea YouTube channel for full coverage of the remainder of the CWC and all of the summer transfer news going forward. Bayern Munich lost a hard fought match to the best team in the world PSG by a final score of 2-0 to get eliminated from the FIFA CWC. Bayern & PSG truly put on one of the best matches of football we've seen in recent memory, two giants of the game going toe to toe at the highest of levels. All of this was unfortunately overshadowed by Jamal Musiala's gruesome injury from a reckless challenge by Paris keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The match was truly bizarre & fate was against the Bavarians. We saw multiple injuries to Bayern players, two offside goals, and a disallowed penalty. Danny breaks down the entire match from Vincent Kompany's lineup/tactics, to match highlights/lowlights, to scoring/injuries/cards, and individual player performances. Bayern's press was giving PSG all sorts of fits as the match began but no goals ended up sticking. Globally known as one of the poorest referees in the world. Anthony Taylor called no foul as Donnarumma snapped Musiala's ankle altering the trajectory of the game and Bayern Munich's entire upcoming season. PSG lost control of the match towards the end, earning two red cards for dangerous challenges involving studs to Leon Goretzka's leg and an elbow to Guerreiro's head. Josip Stanisic also suffered a hamstring injury and had to be subbed out. Before all was said and done Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele scored incredible goals and a handball in the box by PSG was awarded before Taylor inexplicably took it away. Bayern Munich is eliminated from the tournament. Chelsea's fortunates look great as they have a simple path to the CWC final. They beat Palmeiras 2-1 yesterday. Welcome to the BUNDESLIGA SEASON FINALE Episode of the Always Bayern Chelsea show! Yep, it's already match-day 34 in Germany and Bayern Munich put up a dominant showing winning 4-0 over Hoffenheim despite taking a couple days to vacation in Ibiza. Thomas Muller received an emotional sendoff for his final Bundesliga match. Vincent Kompany's first season was a domestic success, finishing up with 82 points, 13 points ahead of Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen. Subscribe to the Always Bayern Chelsea YouTube channel for the incoming full season breakdown, Jim's Chelsea updates, and to join the community of football fans! Danny kicks this episode off by breaking down Bayern Munich's 4-0 win over Hoffenheim in full. He provides details on Vincent Kompany's lineup, tactics, player performances, match highlights, and even match awards (sort of). The match started off slow with Hoffenheim clearly just trying not to get blown out. Michael Olise opened up the floodgates by scoring a sublime free kick. He then assisted Joshua Kimmich to double the Bavarians lead. Harry Kane came on in the 60th minute to score and assist Serge Gnabry's goal. Sacha Boey assisted for Kane's. We saw Thomas Muller exit a Bundesliga match for the final time with a standing ovation from both the home and away fans. Finally, Danny spends some more time reminiscing on the Bundesliga season as a whole, it wasn't perfect, but it was overall very good. Vincent Kompany and co. did what they set out to do this year and bring the Meisterschale back to Munich. We spend some time looking at what's next with the Club World Cup next month. Then, we talk about some upcoming transfer news and contract discussions regarding Florian Wirtz, Jonathan Tah, and Leroy Sane. Finally, we talk some more about the storied career of Thomas Muller. Of all the things Simon could have hoped to find on his morning walk to the local Bäckerei, terrifying omens of impending doom would be low on the list. Of course, that's not how these things work, and anyway, Bavarians love a little superstition. What does the future hold for Simon? Nic and Simon try to figure it out. Someone who's clearly having better luck than us is England's rose Harry Kane, who celebrated winning the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich at the second attempt. We celebrate Kane's success, discuss the best jokes to end a career on, and take some time to enjoy saying “Torjägerkanone”.Sticking with Munich, we look at reports it may be the most unfriendly city in Germany…for expats, and we finish with the anniversary of the Deutschlandticket.Theme tune courtesy of Kloß mit Soß
Bayern Munich hosted Borussia Mönchengladbach in Thomas Müller's final home game at the Allianz Arena and it was an atmosphere to behold. The Bavarians would win 2-0 giving their living legend a proper send off, but it was a complete team effort that saw terrific performances from just about everyone on the pitch.Let's talk about all of that and more on the Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show. Bayern Munich just saw the Bundesliga title slip from their grasp at the last possible second against RB Leipzig. Welcome to the Always Bayern Chelsea show. In this episode Danny breaks down this rollercoaster match from top to bottom. Subscribe to the Always Bayern Chelsea YouTube channel for full coverage of the remainder of the football season, all the news, trophy celebrations, and community you can image. Bayern Munich faced off against RB Leipzig with a chance to become champions of the Bundesliga with a win. Instead we got a crazy 3-3 draw with plenty of lows and then highs and then a final second stoppage time goal to halt the already begun celebrations. Danny takes to the mic with emotions running high to break down Vincent Kompany's lineup (yes Harry Kane was suspended), tactics, player performances, and all the match highlights/lowlights. An early defensive miscommunication and collapse from Bayern saw keeper Jonas Urbig far off his line setting up a simple Benjamin Sesko goal which was followed by another Leipzig goal sending them off to a blazing 2-0 start. In the second half Bayern Munich scored two goals in less than a minute to equalize. Eric Dier's header assisted by a Michael Olise corner and then Olise getting a goal himself assisted by Serge Gnabry. Finally, late in the match Leroy Sane scored what was seemingly the Bundesliga dagger in the 83 minute from a Joshua Kimmich assist flick. Players and Vincent Kompany himself were beginning title celebrations after 4 minutes of added stoppage time when Kingsley Coman failed to clear a ball in the box and Yussuf Poulsen chipped an equalizer over Urbig in the 95th minute. A single point in this match was enough to guarantee at best Bayer Leverkusen can equal Bayern Munich in points and the Bavarians hold a 30 goal lead in goal differential. The title is all but theirs but mathematically nothing can be awarded until either Leverkusen loses or draws to SC Freiburg or Bayern Munich beats or draws to Borussia Mönchengladbach next week at the Allianz Arena. Be sure to tune back in for a BIG celebration next weekend. Until then Mia San Mia. Subscribe to the YouTube channel to stay updated! Thanks for listening/watching. Bayern Munich traveled to the MHP Arena to face VfB Stuttgart in a match that fell at a poor time for the Bavarians. With the Champions League match against Bayer Leverkusen just a few days away, Bayern Munich looked a bit out of sorts and distracted. When factoring in that Vincent Kompany used some combinations of players, who do not typically always play together, it made for some uneven play at times. That said, Bayern Munich fought through some tough times, showed some resilience, and pulled away for a hard-fought 3-1 victory. Let's talk about how it all went down and more on the Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show. This is what we have on tap: A look at the starting XI - what worked and what didn't. A rundown of the scoring and substitutions. Some final thoughts and takeaways on the match. Why this was such a refreshing game to watch. Eberl is getting work done in locking up many key players — with a few more on tap, including Joshua Kimmich and Dayot Upamecano. Bayern Munich hosted Celtic FC in the second leg of the Champions League playoff round and — as expected — the Scottish champions were not going to go down without a fight. In fact, Celtic almost pulled off an unthinkable effort and pushed the Bavarians to their limit.
