Last time we spoke about the first Zhili-Fengtian War. The Anhui-Zhili War of 1920 saw the defeat of the Anhui clique by the Zhili and Fengtian cliques, reshaping territorial control. Despite their victory, stability remained nowhere to be seen in North China. Factionalism persisted, with alliances shifting and power struggles intensifying. Zhang Zuolin of the Fengtian clique emerged a significant player with Japanese backing while Wu Peifu of the Zhili clique earned fame as a military genius. Soon a rivalry emerged between the two leading figures while they also tried to unify China. Meanwhile, in South China, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen's plans for a Northern Expedition faced challenges amidst internal dissent and external pressures. In the end Zhang Zuolin formed a grand coalition to defeat Wu Peifu and it backfired spectacularly. Wu Peifu, who had been born of poor parents in 1874 and had earned the lowest degree in the traditional Qing examination system, decided he would seek out a military career in the Beiyang Army. By 1905 he became a junior officer to Cao Kun's 3rd Division. Wu Peifu had a traditional confucian upbringing, he remained loyal to Cao Kun because of that special confucian bond between mentor and student. He remained loyal despite Cao Kun's numerous failings, even when he threw his lot in with Zhang Zuolin to save his own ass at Wu Peifu's expense. The Zhili victory during the first Zhili-Fengtian war emboldened Cao Kun's ambitions, he soon unleashed his henchmen all over Zhili province snatching up major positions. Cao Kun began a campaign of bribery and intimidation, something very reminiscent of the late Yuan Shikai. After his victory, Wu Peifu returned to Henan province, sending the newly appointed inspector general of the army, Feng Yuxiang to Beijing. Those in Henan strongly petitioned against Feng Yuxiangs transfers as he had gained an excellent reputation as the civil administrator in Henan. Where Wu Peifu went it seemed banditry and extortion flourished. Yet Wu Peifu needed Feng Yuxiang to be in Beijing so he could re-establish his authority in his home base. As we had seen in the last episode, the Zhili Clique was not sturdy. Unlike the Fengtian and Anhui, the Zhili clique was made up of a lot of riff raff, who only joined forces as a means to an end, notably to get rid of their enemies. Feng Yuxiang concentrated his army at Nanyuan, due south of the capital. He went to work, checking fingernails, training his men in the good word of the lord, his men being a single division and 3 mixed brigades now. Feng Yuxiang had come a long way, now probably the most powerful warlord in Zhili province, and he made sure to establish good relations with Cao Kun and his brother Wang Huaiqing the commander of the Beijing police. In June of 1923 Feng Yuxiang and Wang Huaiqing would jointly present their resignations to President Li Yuanhong, stating unless their men were paid, they could no longer be responsible for maintaining order in the capital. Yes the finances of China were in a terrible state. Chinese diplomats were struggling abroad to find foreign banks to loan money, and even they were not getting paid and were resigning en masse. Wu Peifu likewise was not receiving a cent from the central government. After several days of standoff, Li Yuanhong fled Beijing on June 13th, taking the presidential seals with him, issuing orders countersigned by only a single cabinet minister who backed him, the minister of agriculture, and Yunnan general Li Kenyuan. It seems for Li Kenyuan it was a bad call, for Cao Kun forced him out of office within a few months. Cao Kun then bribed his way into office by October 10th. It was an infamous bribery story. Apparently Cao Kun bribed assembly members with 5000 silver dollars each. This act was so egregious, it basically pissed off everyone. The hate tossed Cao Kun's way would help bolster Dr Sun Yat-Sen's continuing efforts in south china, basically saving his career. Cao Kun began his presidency proclaiming a constitution incorporating ideas of a federalist government and then promoted Feng Yuxiang and other notable generals to the rank of Marshal. While Cao Kun began consolidating his control in Zhili, a humiliated Zhang Zuolin would lick his tiger wounds and rebuild in the northeast.  After rallying his troops back together once back in Manchuria, Zhang Zuolin quickly declared his 3 provinces in Manchuria were independent of China. The Beijing government under Cao Kun had immediately gone to work trying to coerce defections amongst the Fengtian generals. Cao Kun tossed extravagant positions, such as governorships to them, but only one notable General, Kao Shihpin took the bribe and rebelled against Zhang Zuolin. Zhang Zuolin's loyal subordinate, great friend to the show, the dogmeat general Zhang Zongchang, easily defeated the defector. Now that Manchuria was independent, Zhang Zuolin firmly repressed any efforts of his provincial assemblies to create civil governments independent of his military control. Thus governmental positions in Manchuria remained in the hands of loyal Fengtian Clique members. Because Zhang Zuolin was now very hostile to all in the Zhili clique, relations with Dr Sun Yat-Sen improved. Thus Zhang Zuolin began propagating the language of national unification, anti-imperialism etc etc. Economically Zhang Zuolin began developing railway lines and built a new port at Hulutao, both of which were competing with the Japanese owned South Manchurian Railway company and port at Dairen. Zhang Zuolin knew full well most of China regarding him as a Japanese puppet. The Japanese however completely failed him in the first-zhili fengtian war, thus he was trying to sport some backbone against them.  Zhang Zuolin and his top commanders took their loss in 1922 to heart. He began a large-scale reorganization of his military. In 1922 his forces had been organized into 5 Divisions, of which the 16th and 28th disintegrated. The 27th and 29th along with a new reorganized 1st were retained at the divisional level, while the rest of the troops formed into the 1st to 27th Mixed Brigades and 1st to 5th Cavalry Brigades. He standardized the units, 150 men formed a company, 3 companies a battalion, 3 battalions a regiment, 3 regiments a brigade at 4000 men strong. He reshuffled commanders and began promoting officers with professional education and less so the banditry opium smoking types he typically preferred in the past. He really made an effort to purchase new weaponry and expanded the output of the Mukden arsenal.  During the warlord Era, modern weaponry was expensive to come by, those like the banditry that made up the Fengtian clique used what they got their hands on. The Hanyang 88 based off the German Gewehr 1888 had been the standard Qing rifle and was widely available. There was also a smaller quantity of Type 1 rifles, a Chinese knockoff of the Mauser Model 1907. Given Manchuria's proximity to Russia and Japan, rifles that found their way into Fengtian hands included the Russian Mosin-Nagant 1891, Japanese Murata's and Arisakas of 1897 and 1905. These were not ideal, pretty outdated, but in general most of the Chinese warlord armies were branding antiquated rifles. In 1922 the Mukden Arsenal was capable of producing just a small amount of ammunition. Zhang Zuolin had always relied on piecemeal packages given to him, at first from Yuan Shikai, then Duan Qirui and the Japanese on and off. Most of the supplies he got were japanese made. He also managed to seize a lot from the Anhui clique during their war in 1920. Something of great value he often seized were cars, by 1926 there were only something like 8000 cars in all of China, it was a very hot commodity. French Renault FT tanks had been deployed to Vladivostok for the allied intervention and siberian campaign, many were sold to him after 1919. Zhang Zuolin would poor 17 million yuan into expanding the Mukden Arsenal after his loss in 1922, he hired numerous foreign advisors to overlook the process. The Mukden Arsenal ballooned to an operating budget of a million yuan, employing nearly 30,00 workers, including foreign specialists. Fengtian would become China's largest arms importer, purchasing from Germany, Italy, France and of course the majority came from Japan. Type 3 Heavy machine guns from Japan flooded in and 14 Renaults from France. The Fengtian began utilizing mines, barbed wire, armored trains, particularly Zhang Zongchang and tanks when possible. Zhang Zongchang  purchased 4 new gunboats who became the nucleus of a naval force in the Gulf of Chihli and began developing an air force. By 1923 he purchased 40 French Breguet aircraft that would be operated by 20 foreign pilots. He also looked to the future, at his son Zhang Xueliang. By 1923 his army was nearly 200,000 strong, certainly formidable, but ridden with issues. A year of intense training had greatly improved the Fengtian forces, but Zhang Zuolin was behind those like Dr Sun Yat-Sen, Wu Peifu and even Feng Yuxiang in trying to infuse within the training some sort of ideology. Zhang Zongchang rose to further prominence during this time period. He had of course gained a lot of respect from Zhang Zuolin after quelling Kao Shihpin. He began amassing a great fortune through extortion, violence and opium dealing. Zhang Zuolin was still receiving assistance from the Japanese, despite not exactly aligning with their wishes. For Zhang Zuolin, tossing away some autonomy was merely a tactical move for his drive to conquer China. Thus it was a means to an end. For the Japanese, they sought an absolute hegemony over Manchuria. In August of 1923, Zhang Zuolin turned to Major General Honjo Shigeru, his Japanese advisor for Japanese arms in anticipation of another war against the Zhili clique. Honjo responded by denying him the request and criticized the Fengtian army's level of training and readiness. Then he basically went on to say that Japan would continue to support, as long as he did not invade China proper, “the Empire always demands that you exercise circumspection so that order may be maintained in the Eastern Provinces”. Regardless of the Japanese position on the issue, Zhang Zuolin had taken enormous lengths to reorganize and retrain his army. Simply put, he had grown too strong for the Zhili clique to leave him alone.  Yet the tiger of Manchuria was not the only problem facing the Zhili clique, there was also Dr Sun Yat-Sen's coalition in the south. Then a minor incident, a train robbery in Shandong occurred in april of 1923. Several foreigners were kidnapped and ransomed. Alongside this the feeling in the air was that a war was about to break out at any moment. The foreigners wanted a stable China, the people of China wanted an end to the wars. Thus the foreign diplomats and Chinese officials began demanding the Zhili and Fengtian cliques sign a peace treaty before another war broke out. A peace agreement was reached in June of 1923, what that piece of paper actually meant, who knows.  In the meantime, the Zhili clique began focusing on the remnants of the Anhui clique over in Fujian and Zhejiang province. In march of 1923, Zhili clique member Sun Chuanfang was appointed military governor of Fujian. Sun Chuanfang was the former protege of the previous military governor of Hubei, Wang Chanyuan and he much like Feng Yuxiang was becoming a rising stay. Sun Chuanfang was being bolstered heavily by Cao Kun. Sun Chuanfang drove the Anhui clique's military governor Wang Yungchuan out of Fuzhou and by early 1924, Fujian province was more or less firmly Zhili dominated. Wu Peifu intended to use Fujian as a springboard to conquer Guangdong. Meanwhile the remaining Anhui warlord, Lu Yungxiang of Zhejiang was obviously panicking. Lu Yungxiang held control over Zhejiang and thus also Shanghai, including her arsenal and extensive revenues from foreign trade, the opium trade and had access to foreign markets. Fearing the Zhili would crush him at any moment, he jumped into bed with Zhang Zuolin and Dr Sun Yat-Sen directly after the Anhui cliques defeat back in 1920. Basically to garner their support and that of foreigners, Lu Yungxiang publicly opposed Cao Kun when he bribed his way into the presidency.  On November 10th of 1923, the police chief of Shanghai, Zhili clique member Xu Guoliang was assassinated. It has been alleged Xu Guoliang was killed by henchmen of Lu Yungxiang. A battle emerged between Lu Yungxiang and the military governor of Jiangsu, Qi Xieyuan over appointing a new successor. You might be asking, “why would two people be fighting over this issue, isn't Shanghai under the jurisdiction of Jiangsu?” Yeah funny thing about that, the city was at the time being administered by Lu Yungxiang as part of Zhejiang. While historically Shanghai had typically been part of Jiangsu province, after the first Zhili-Fengtian War, Lu Yungxiang seized control over the city and it basically became his economic lifeline. Both men fought and nearly began a war, but to preserve the peace they began negotiating and signing minor treaties. Both men agreed not to take allies to fight another and not to allow other warlords armies to pass through each other's provinces, nor augment their current armies. Despite everything it was clear to Lu Yungxiang that Zhejiang was next on the chopping block for the Zhili clique, thus in order to protect himself he hired the Anhui clique Generals Zang Zhiping, the commander of the Fujian 2nd Division and Yang Huazhao the commander of the Fujian 3rd Division, together they were roughly 6000 men strong. Obviously their recruitment violated the peace treaty, and alongside this, Lu Yungxiang gave refuge to many Anhui troops fleeing Fujian. This handed the Zhili clique justification to provoke a war. Meanwhile Qi Xieyuan had expanded his military strength in preparation for seizing Shanghai. He began recruiting troops in Yanzhou and Jining. Initially within Jiangsu Qi Xieyuan had 5 Divisions and 6 Brigades, roughly 43,000 men. Qi Xieyuan also had the support of Naval commander Du Xigui who led 20 warships with some marines. Qi Xieyuan also had a minor airforce sporting some Vime bombers purchased from the UK.  As for Zhejiang, Lu Yungxiang reorganized the two Fujian divisions he recruited into a supplementary Brigade and the 24th Mixed Brigade. These added to his divisions and Brigades brought his manpower to nearly 70,000. Lu Yungxiang also had the support of a Shanghai based fleet led by Anhui clique commander Lin Jianzhang and a small airforce sporting French BR14 fighter bombers. Now Qi Xieyuan knew he had no chance in hell of capturing Zhejiang and Shanghai with his forces alone, so he cried to Wu Peifu. Wu Peifu was of course looking down the barrel of a much larger war with Zhang Zuolin, and he had plans to garner Anhui clique support to his side in the future war. In the meantime he asked Qi Xieyuan to lay low and not do anything rash. So Qi Xieyuan did the very opposite. Qi Xieyuan held a secret military meeting in Nanjing, announcing to other warlords from Henan, Anhui and Hubei that he was going to invade Zhejiang. They all wanted a piece of the pie so the game was on.Qi Xieyuan appointed himself commander in chief and created 3 route armies to attack Zhejiang and Shanghai. The first route army was commanded by Gong Bangduo who would mainly be attacking Shanghai, the second route army was led by Chen Tiaoyuan who would mainly defend Yixing and the third route army was led by Wang Pu who would mainly attack Guangde of Zhejiang. In addition to all of this, Sun Chuanfang with support from Cai Chengxun the governor of Jiangxi organized a Fujian-Jiangxi alliance at Jianou. He too would attack Zhejiang, but his ambitions were much larger than just helping Qi Xieyuan.  The Anhui clique warlords knew that if Zhejiang and Shanghai fell to the Zhili the Anhui clique was all but done for. Thus many of them such as Xu Shuzheng, Wu Guangxin, Ma Liang and Qu Tongfeng began recruiting to fight for Zhejiang. Lu Yungxiang welcomed their help and asked them to send word to the Fengtian clique for additional aid. Dr Sun Yat-Sen also said if war broke out between Jiangsu and Zhejiang he would try to send forces of his Northern Expedition army.   By August of 1924, Sun Chuanfang had moved his troops directly over to the Fujian-Zhejiang border. At 10am on September 3rd of 1924 the first shot of the Jiangsu-Zhejiang war rang around Yixing of Jiangsu province. The Jiangsu forces originally sought to capture Changxing in Zhejiang in one lighting attack, but they found extremely strong resistance. Zhejiang artillery in the mountains surrounded Changxing, roughly 30 miles from Yixing kept them at bay, causing an immediate stalemate. By 11am the fighting made its way along the Shanghai-Nanjing railway. By 10am the next day the Jiangsu forces at Huangdu began firing at Zhejiang fortifications, but the Zhejiang defenders did not fire back. Lured in by the idea the fortifications might be unguarded, Jiangsu forces came over only to be gunned down by machine guns and artillery, killing possibly hundreds. The Zhejiang fighters stormed out of the fortifications to pursue the enemy and by 5pm captured Anting in the process.  Now on the political side of things, because Qi Xieyuan launched the first punch, Lu Yungxiang proclaimed he was only defending his territory. Qi Xieyuan in the meantime proclaimed he was working under Cao Kun, thus Lu Yungxiang began tossing accusations at Cao Kun about his bribery scandal, calling him a treacherous dog, you know normal stuff. Now all this Cao Kun talk, prompted Cao Kun to issue officials orders on September 4th to attack Zhejiang. I wont be getting into here, but this sparked the second Zhili-Fengtian war essentially. So while we focus on this smaller war in a bigger war, don't forget about the bigger war. Now by September the 5th the Jiangsu-Zhejiang war saw battles going on in 5 directions: Yixing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Jiading, Liuhe and Qingpu. Within the Yixing battles, the Jiangsu forces were initially blocked, facing Zhejiang counterattacks, roughly 10 miles from Yixing. The Jiangsu forces were battered, 3 battalions defected on the 6th. On the 7th, the Zhejiang forces entered Shushan, prompting Qi Xieyuan to mobilize the Anhui 5th Mixed brigade to reinforce the area, finally halting the Zhejiang advance. Another stalemate emerged, now between Shushan and Yixing. Over at the Shanghai-Nanjing railway line area, after two quiet days, on the night of the 6th the two armies clashed around Anting. Both sides were evenly matched forming a quick stalemate. In the Jiading area on the night of the 3rd the Jiangsu stormed the west gate of Jiading, the defenders were barely holding on. Lu Yungxiang deployed Yang Huazhao's army who made it over on the 5th. Both sides fought fiercely for days. Over in the Liuhe direction, during the afternoon of the 4th the Jiangsu forces advanced, but the Zhejiang artillery kept them at bay. By 5pm however the Zhejiang defenders were overwhelmed allowing the Jiangsu forces to seize Liuhe as the defenders fled to Luodian. At 3am on the 5th the Jiangsu forces continued their advance, only to see the Zhejiang forces circle back and recapture Liuhe. The Jiangsu forces tossed numerous counterattacks, but were repelled and forced to pull back to their start lines. Over in the Qingpu area on the 5th the Jiangsu divided themselves in two groups departing Anting. One group attack Si Port, only 6 miles away from Anting, the other group attacked Baihe due southwest. By 3pm on the 6th both sides were fighting  around Kongzhai, just 10 miles north of Qingpu. The Zhejiang managed to halt the Jiangsu. Thus after a few days, across all the battle areas, pretty much no one was making significant progress. Just as it looked like the stalemate would not break, on the 8th the Sun Chuanfang's Jiangsu-Fujian attacked. They quickly occupied Xianxia, Jiangshan and Quzhou by the 18th. Lu Yungxiang saw the enemy closing in on Shanghai and panicked. He knew combined these forces could launch two pronged attacks and overwhelm him. Thus Lu Yungxiang sacrifice Zhejiang as a whole and withdrew to Shanghai with his most elite forces. Now leaderless the rest of the Zhejiang army was simply blown away by the Jiangsu-Fujian forces. They quickly seized Jiaxing, Changxing and other cities. The Jiangsu navy began bombarding coastal and riverside towns as the airforce bombed them as well. Facing a three dimensional war, the Zhejiang forces crumbled and by the end of September Zhejiang defense ceased. The Fujian-Jiangsu armies rushed to Shanghai, occupying Jinshanwei, Songjiang, Qingpu and Longhua by October 13th. At that point Lu Yungxiang realized they could not hope to hold Shanghai, so he alongside other warlords fled into the Shanghai international Concession. The rest of the Zhejiang forces fell to Xu Shuzheng who was placed under house arrest. Thus Qi Xieyuan and Sun Chuanfang were victorious. The war between Jiangsu and Zhejiang lasted roughly 40 days. It was a tremendous disaster for the common people who resided in both provinces who were displaced. The Jiangsu provincial peasants association relayed a message after the war to the state council stating "In the war between Jiangsu and Zhejiang, the army passed by, the villages and towns were ruins, the people were migrating, and they were unemployed. The rich were poor, and the poor were dead. No one knows how many people died in the war zones around Jiangnan and Yixing, This is especially true in Kunshan, Jiading, Taicang, Songjiang, Qingpu and other counties.” The Jiading, Qingpu, Songjiang and Taicang associations added this to the state council "The war broke out in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, and the two provinces were severely affected. In Jiangsu, the four counties of Jiading, Qingpu, Songjiang, and Taicang were the most severely affected, entire towns were destroyed, robbed, or displaced, and the situation was inexplicable... In short, the businesses stopped and the farmers fled. In the past sixty years, their vitality has been exhausted." The Liuhe War Disaster Relief association wrote this report to the Ministry of Internal affairs "The Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces used the Liuhe River as the battlefield, and the stalemate lasted for forty days and nights. People's lives and property were destroyed by artillery fire, and they were repeatedly raped and plundered. The navy also fired long-distance artillery fire from time to time. Therefore, many houses were burned and bombed, such as schools, temples, shops, churches, charity halls, hospitals, and long-distance buses, which were all destroyed by the soldiers... A total of 154 houses in the city were destroyed by artillery fire. Of the 1,529 houses, about 3,300 were damaged by shells, and the total damage was estimated to be over 770,000 yuan. The merchants and civilians in the houses were not affected by this war disaster. For this reason, the residents were exiled and their houses were no longer available, and they were unable to resume operations. The situation was so miserable that it was difficult for them to do so."  Both sides' casualty figures ranged in the thousands to tens of thousands. Official reports stated 30,000 total casualties for the war, with hundreds dying each day of it. However the greatest harm fell upon civilians. Young recruits, often having not been paid for long periods of time, resorting to looting and robbing. Civilians panicked and fled their homes. Women were pressed into service as cooks and in brothels, known sometimes as public wives. Civilians were forced to work for the soldiers, performing things like transporting ammunition, digging trenches and such. They were beaten with gun handles if they did not comply, those who ran were whipping, many were shot. Gang rape was an epidemic, there was a tragic story of an 8 year old girl and a 78 year old women were were gang raped to death by 13 soldiers near Fangtai while they were out picking cotton. Waves of refugees roamed the region, Japanese survey's indicated the Shanghai international concession ballooned with 500,000 refugees. When Lu Yungxiang fled for Shanghai, his Zhejiang army simply looted the province.  Economic losses were insanely high. These losses came from warlords extorting or expropriating to meet military demands. It was estimated that the military expenditure of both sides was 60-70 million yuan. Neither provincial taxes could support such numbers so the warlords forced banks and governments to allocate things like treasury exchange coupons. Sun Chuanfang extorted 800,000 yuan from the Huangzhou banks and would later extort another 1 million yuan from the Shanghai business community. Soldiers burned, killed and looted as was the norm of warlord China. As you can imagine the government bond price plummeted from all of this, banks foreclosed, financial ruin ensued. The entire financial industry of Jiangsu and Zhejiang went on strike because of the war and all of this of course impacted China's overall economy.  Now as I alluded to, the Jiangsu-Zhejiang war was not only a war fought over two provinces in southeast China, but rather a contest between the entire Zhili clique against an emerging anti-Zhili coalition. It was also another disastrous blow to the already dramatically weakened Anhui clique, who pretty much would never recover. From this point forward the Anhui clique would not wield much presence politically or militarily. Although the war was clearly limited in scope to the southeast corner of China, it had an enormous impact across the nation. At the time the Zhili clique was in firm control over Beijing and was vigorously trying to unify China by force, threatening all the other cliques' warlords. Lu Yungxiang desperately looked for anyone to help him out, even turning to Cao Kun and Wu Peifu, asking them to restrain Qi Xieyuang. Of course neither Zhili leader headed this as they very much wanted Zhejiang to fall into their pocket, but they had no idea what a powder keg Zhejiang would turn out to be.  I would like to take this time to remind you all that this podcast is only made possible through the efforts of Kings and Generals over at Youtube. The First Jiangsu-Zhejiang War was but a mere cog in a larger war that was unfolding across China. This was a house that not only had to be built twice due to a fire, but it was ahead of its time in regards to amenities. A legend connected to this property claims that a bounty hunter came calling looking for runaway slaves and rather than finding slaves, he found a noose as workers on the farm hanged him.  There are stories of spirits on the property. (Various bird calls play) Tool Use in Birds Kiersten: Welcome to the Feathered Desert this episode will open your mind to the amazing abilities of birds. Cheryl and I are going to talk about tool use in birds! As humans one of the abilities that we thought separated us from the rest of the animal kingdom was our use of tools, but as researchers continue to study the natural world, we have discovered that we are not the only ones capable of using tools.             To research this controversial topic, scientists first started off with an accepted definition of true tool use. The definition states that true tool use is “the exertion of control over a freely manipulable external object (the tool) with the goal of (1) altering the physical properties of another object, substance, surface, or medium (the target) via a dynamic mechanical interaction, or (2) mediating the flow of information between the tool user and the environment or other organisms in the environment.”   Cheryl: We're going to start this conversation off with baiting. Baiting is the deliberate use of an item to lure prey to a predator, like when humans go fishing. We use a lure to attract fish to our hook and catch them. This is a pretty advanced form of fore-thought that many scientists didn't think birds were capable of performing, but we have two examples of baiting in birds. The first example is herons using various items to attract fish to their fishing spot. The Striated heron uses bits of bread, insects, twigs, or other vegetation to lure fish close to the branches that hang over the water that they use as hunting spots. Green herons have been seen using bread crumbs to lure fish close enough to easily catch them and chasing away coots that tried to eat their bread lure indicating the heron's understanding that the bread was helping lure fish. Use of luring has also been reported In the Great Egret, Black-crowned Night-heron, Great Blue Heron, Black Kite, Sun Bittern, and the Pied Kingfisher. Another bird that is one of our favorite Valley birds is also on our tool use list. The Burrowing Owl will line the entrance of its burrow with dung to attract one of its favorite insects to eat, the Dung Beetle. Scientists did a few experiments and discovered that owls using the dung as a lure ate 10 times more dung beetles as owls not using the lure. It's cheaper than using UberEats!   Kiersten: Anting is another example of true tool use but it involves other live animals such as insects. Anting is when a bird rubs an ant, caterpillar, centipede, snail, or other insect all over its body. It happens most often in passerines, aka songbirds, but no one really knows why they do it. One guess is that they use the chemicals in the insect as bug repellent. Another guess is that it could be a way to prepare the insect before eating, since most often the bird eats the insect after the rubbing activity.   Cheryl: Egyptian vultures love to eat ostrich eggs, but the shell is so thick they cannot crack it open with their own beaks. So, they fly up to 50 yards away to find the perfect rock to help them crack open the ostrich egg. When they find just the right rock, they hold it in their beak, stand next to the egg, and throw the stone at the egg. They only hit the target 40-60% of the time but they persist until they crack it open. The perfect rock is often an egg-shaped rock and this leads scientists to hypothesis that this behavior evolved from a time when the vultures threw eggs to crack them open instead of the other way around.   Kiersten:  An example closer to home is the Brown-headed Nuthatch. And this is a regional example of tool use. The Brown-headed nuthatches from a specific longleaf pine forest of Louisiana use bits of bark to pry off other pieces of bark in search of hidden treasures. They are looking for insects and cached pine nuts. They do this most often when the hunger quotient is high and resources are low.   Cheryl: Our next example for true tool use is drumming. Palm cockatoo males will remove twigs from trees to drum on tree trunks. They chose specific twigs that must be between 10-12 cm and they will remove any leaves or offshoots on those twigs until it's just the way they want it. Then they will beat it against the tree truck and each male has a different rhythm. We're not one hundred percent sure why they do it but it seems likely that they do it to advertise their territory and to attract a mate. The twig is often added to the nest after a successful pairing. I guess it really is true that the drummer always gets the girl!   Kiersten: Drumming actually takes us up a notch to creating tools out of available items. This is one of the most remarkable behaviors we've discovered in the bird world. The Woodpecker finch of the Galapagos Islands is an insect eating bird that loves to eat grubs. These grubs burrow into the bark of trees to protect themselves from predators, but the woodpecker finch has designed a way to outsmart them. They use a cactus spine to dig the grubs out of their hiding space and they are particular about which spine they use. They will look for just the right spine or twig and if that fails, they will snap one down to the right size. Once they have fashioned the perfect tool they will keep it with them, flying from place to place holding it in their beak.   Cheryl: One of the most amazing examples of tool making is the New Caledonia crow. This crow can make a tool out of almost anything! They break down twigs to the right size and even fashion wire into the perfect tool by bending the ends into the perfect curve. The leaf tools they develop have diversified over time on the island of New Caledonia, which is an unexpected accomplishment. A quote from Ornithology by Frank B. Gill states “The crow has developed the cultural capacity to evolve its tools in ways that resemble the feats of the early ancestors of modern humans.”   These birds are also sequential tool users which means they use multiple tools in a row to reach their objective. This is seen in captive experiments where the crow is presented with a puzzle with the reward being food. To solve the puzzle the birds must use different tools to solve each step to finally open the portion with the food. It's a behavior rarely seen in animals outside of primates.   Kiersten: I saved my favorite for last. It's not as complicated at the New Caledonia crow but it is pretty mind-blowing. The Black Kite of Australia, a type of raptor, has been seen by Aborigines for generations picking up burning sticks on the edges of wild fires and then dropping them further afield to make small prey items, such a mice, run in the direction they want them to go to catch them. This is an amazing example of tool use, but even more incredible it's the only other example of an animal using fire besides humans!   We both hope that this episode of the Feathered Desert stays with you and next time you are watching your favorite birds at your feeder you remember these examples of bird intelligence and how similar birds really are to us.

Emden is now the second site for electric vehicles in Germany following Zwickau and also joins the Chinese plants in Anting and Foshan. - Chattanooga (ID.4) and Hanover will also commence production this year. As a result, Volkswagen is creating the conditions in 2022 for building 1.2 million all-electric vehicles a year based on the MEB in the future at its sites in Europe, the U.S. and China. - Apart from the ID.4, Emden will make another model – the AERO B – next year. In addition, production of the iconic ID. Buzz will commence this year at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in Hanover. It will be joined from 2023 on by the ID.3 made in Wolfsburg, while a further electric vehicle – the Trinity – will then roll off the assembly line at the location starting in 2026. - The ID.4's start-up is on schedule, despite the global challenges during the two-year conversion phase. Emden's maximum production capacity at the end of 2022 will be 800 units per working day, depending on the supply situation. - In the first quarter of 2022 alone, Volkswagen delivered more than 30,000 units – meaning every one-in-two all-electric vehicles from Volkswagen is an ID.4. 163,000 units have been delivered since its launch, making the ID.4 the Volkswagen brand's and the Group's best-selling e-vehicle. The first EV model to utilize the technology will be the Seal series of vehicles. - Before the CTB solution, the most common method with which to manufacture batteries was with CTP (Cell To Pack), that is, the battery cell was directly integrated into the battery pack. The world's first CTP battery pack from Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) went offline in 2019, and was successively introduced on Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y, XPeng P7 and other models in the last two years. The blade battery released by BYD in March 2020 also used CTP technology. - CTB solution allows the sandwich structure originally used for the battery pack to be used throughout the vehicle, with the top cover of the battery pack making up the vehicle body's flooring. This design allows for a 100 percent increase in body torsional stiffness over conventional designs - The standard-range rear-wheel-drive version is equipped with a 150kW motor, 61.4 kWh battery, and a CLTC cruising range of 550km. Registrations of new "electrified" vehicles—including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and battery-electric cars combined—pushed past diesel in September 2020, but this is the first time battery-electric models have outsold diesels on their own, the report said. - In December 2021, more than one fifth of new cars sold across 18 European markets were all-electric, while diesel cars (including diesel hybrids) accounted for less than 19% of sales, according to the report, which is based on data compiled by the Financial Times and independent auto analyst Matthias Schmidt. - 176,000 battery-electric vehicles were sold in Western Europe that month, compared to around 160,000 diesel cars, the report said. In the second chapter of our current read: "Back from the Crodile's Belly", we have a conversation about Anting-Anting. In her two year long research, Nenita Pambid Domingo sought to answer the question of whatever happened to the native God of the FIlipinos when the Spanish Catholic God and its host of angels vanquished the “heathens” and their gods? Her research led her to the myth of Doctrine of Infinito Dios (or Infinite God) telling how the Three Persons in One God struggled against the Infinito Dios also known as Nuno (or ancestor). The Nuno said he could not be by any means be baptized by Jesus since the Nuno is Jesus' forefather, the First and the only God who holds all the power and the well-spring of all the forces in the universe. In the end, the Infinito Dios (aka Nuno) finally succumbed to the wishes of Jesus, but only through his own power. And that was how Nuno, the ancestor, had supposedly come to be baptized, but actually not. This myth and the oraciones (or power words) were put into symbols in the extant Infinito Dios amulet also known as an anting-anting. I'm going to live with it, spend some time with it, and then I'm going to try to answer all of the questions people have had about it that I possibly can. And there are a lot of questions, because this is a very hyped up vehicle, this is maybe the most promising of any of the EVs coming out of the start-ups. This I think is the most interesting of all of them right now, thanks in part by their background with Amazon and Ford. The basic specs are this: it's quad motors, one on each 21 inch all-terrain wheel, 314 miles of range, 0 to 60 in three seconds flat, which is hilariously quick for pickup truck. And then this is the launch edition with the adventure package, which includes a lot of the most premium interior finishes. It has the off-road upgrade and pretty much all the options. So it starts at just over $70,000 and it can quickly jump up into mid eighties or 90 plus from there. The company had rolled out a new version of its driver-assistance software to an expanded group of users over the weekend, but Musk said that it proved problematic and that the company was working on fixes. - Users reported sporadic issues including hard braking events, forward collision warnings and other system misfires that had not been present in previous versions. The urgency to address those safety recommendations has increased now that Tesla is rolling out more automated driving functions through its so-called “Full Self-Driving” software beta. - The NTSB can only make recommendations and does not have the authority to enforce existing laws or make policy. - Homendy also noted that it sent five other automakers that have vehicles with Level 2 driving automation systems a recommendation to apply ways to engage and alert the driver. We guess that those are the first customer cars - Lucid Air Dream Edition - that within the coming days or weeks will be delivered. The company said a month ago that the first deliveries are expected in October so only several days are left to fulfil the promise. - The production of the Lucid Air started on September 28 in Casa Grande, Arizona, so it's now been almost a month of a careful ramp up of this all-new, luxury EV. - Lucid had over 13,000 reservations for the Air when it started production, but we assume that the beginning will be slow, as quality control and satisfaction must be prioritized. - The initial production run will be 520 Dream Edition units (Range or Performance versions) after which Lucid will move to more regular types and more and more affordable versions - Air Grand Touring, Air Touring and Air. Three variants are offered at prices starting at 159,888 yuan, the equivalent of about 21,500 euros. As reported, the compact electric car is produced locally by SAIC Volkswagen in Anting. - According to the Chinese electric car portal CnEVPost, sales of the ID.3 began on Friday. The entry-level variant is said to cost 159,888 yuan (around 21,500 euros), the other two variants 173,888 yuan (around 23,400 euros) each. The portal does not provide details on these variants. However, various media report that they are both models with 125-kW and 310-Nm rear-wheel drive and the medium-sized 58-kWh battery. In this episode, Lucy McDonald meets entrepreneur Anting Liu. Anting is the Founder and Board Chair at Teach for Taiwan, which places graduates from local universities as teachers in poor or neglected public schools, with a vision to boost rural education. Anting moved from Taiwan to study at Princeton and later became well-known for delivering inspiring TED talks, including one entitled 'Connecting my purpose with my past' in 2016, which really struck a chord within the Generosity Path network. Having taught in places such as Haiti and Ghana, with similar issues of systemic poverty to her home country of Taiwan, she was inspired to go back and improve under-serviced schools, affiliating her organisation with the Teach for All model. Impressively, Anting has appeared on Forbes' 30 Under 30 list. Her conversation with Lucy reaffirms the powerful 'domino effect' of generosity; how one act can spark another and another, until the whole world is ultimately caught up in the generosity movement!

REPORT: NIO TO ENTER GERMANY Q4 2022 Matthias Schmidt @auto_schmidt "China's electric car manufacturer, Nio, will enter the German market from Q4 2022, their European spokesperson confirms" AUDI EVS CLOSE TO SAME PROFIT MARGINS AS COMBUSTION "Audi, which accounted for more than a quarter of Volkswagen's first-half operating profit, has embarked on an ambitious shift towards battery-powered vehicles, meaning all new models it will release from 2026 will be fully electric." says Reuters: "Meantime, production of internal combustion engines will be gradually phased out up to 2033. Audi's CFO in August said it would only take 2-3 years before profitability of electric vehicles (EV) would match that of combustion engine cars. [Markus] Duesmann thinks this could happen even more quickly." according to the Audi Chief Executive: "Apart from efforts to challenge Tesla (TSLA.O) and become the biggest seller of EVs, Volkswagen, the world's No.2 carmaker, is also doubling down on efforts to develop software, which CEO Herbert Diess said is the industry's real gamechanger." For comparison: On average, the ratio of new customers for other Volkswagen models is around 36 percent. In the first half of 2021, the strong demand for the ID.3 and other ID. models made Volkswagen the market leader for battery-electric vehicles in Europe within a very short time. In August, the car was the most popular electric car in many markets including Germany, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Austria and Switzerland. Based on new registrations, the ID.3 also ranked top in Western Europe overall in August. In order to meet the strong demand, some 1,200 of the best-selling electric cars are leaving the production lines in Zwickau and Dresden every day, with Zwickau operating three shifts on both production lines. Moreover, production for the local market has started in Anting in China – the car will be launched on the Chinese market in the fall of this year. Audi also added camouflage that extends back onto the front fenders and side skirts, so we presume there are some changes hiding under there as well. We're expecting to see the updated Audi E-Tron Sportback (as well as the more traditional non-Sportback model) debut sometime next year; in the US they will be sold as 2023 model-year and it looks like the model's popularity has been increasing in the second quarter of 2021." The company is therefore launching a recruitment drive with the aim of employing more than 280 people by the end of 2021." says electrive: "Currently, Volta Trucks says it has over 150 employees, up from a “handful” at the beginning of the year. Volta is currently looking for industrial and commercial experts, but above all for “talented and forward-thinking engineers”. Seventy positions have been advertised." As planned, the first cars will be delivered at the end of October. There are also demonstration cars on board for many dealers. So some customers will be able to book a test drive soon. Now, days into the fourth quarter, Tesla has continued the earlier trend of price increases on the Model 3 and Model Y." writes The Street.com: "Model 3 Standard Range Plus increased by $2,000 to $41,990. Model 3 Performance increased by $1,000 to $57,990. Model Y Long Range increased by $1,000 to $54,990. Model Y Performance increased by $1,000 to $61,990. Due to Tesla's order backlog, it's likely that Q2 did not reflect the full impact of those price changes. Zwickau, Germany - up to 330,000, six models. Transparent Factory in Dresden, Germany. Mladá Boleslav, Czechia. FAW-Volkswagen plant in Foshan, China - up to 300,000. SAIC Volkswagen plant in Anting, China - up to 300,000. In Zwickau, Volkswagen produces around 800 all-electric ID.3 and ID.4 cars per day. When new models join the line, the rate will be up to 1,500 vehicles per day or 330,000 vehicles per year at its peak. Farasis Energy (Ganzhou), which sold a 3% stake last year to automotive group Daimler in a deal valued at 900 million yuan ($138.8 million), aims to start construction of a 600 million euro factory in the eastern town of Bitterfeld by the end of March. SVOLT aims to churn out 24 gigawatt-hours worth of auto batteries a year in Germany, a quarter of its global target, while Farasis aims to put out 6 GWh from Bitterfeld by next year on the way to full output of 10 GWh. Up to 350 units of the e-SUV will eventually be produced daily at Škoda’s main plant in Mladá Boleslav on the same lines as the Octavia and Karoq model series containing combustion engines." according to electrive, writing about the potential for 120,000 of these a year from this plant: "The Enyaq iV is the first MEB-based electric car in the Volkswagen Group build outside of VW’s Zwickau plant in Germany. The ID.3 and ID.4 are currently being assembled there, with derivatives of the Audi Q4 e-tron and the Cupra el-Born to be added later. Other MEB plants in Europe are not scheduled to begin until 2022, such as Emden as the second plant for the ID.4, and the VW commercial vehicles plant in Hanover for the production version of the ID. Buzz."   In comparison at the VW plant in Germany already making the ID.3 and ID.4 they have production capacity of 750 a day, or 5,250 a week. Over a 48 week year (allowing for one week shutdown per quarter) that's 252,000 VW brand cars from just that one factory.   https://www.electrive.com/2020/11/26/skoda-starts-series-production-of-all-electric-enyaq/     VW Speeds Up Work on Small Electric Car "Volkswagen AG is accelerating development of a compact electric car that will cost less than 30,000 euros ($35,800) as tightening emissions rules and generous subsidies bolster sales of battery-powered vehicles, according to people familiar with the matter. The VW-branded car may be introduced as early as 2022" writes Bloomberg today: "To free up funds for the industry’s biggest electric-car offensive, VW will take more steps to shrink its portfolio of combustion-engine cars after already culling models including the Beetle and the Scirocco. It will discontinue the mid-sized Passat sedan in the U.S. and sell only the station-wagon version in Europe, the people said. With its distinctive yellow livery, this design classic has inhabited the roads of North America in various forms since 1939, and the region is unique in having a fleet of dedicated buses for transporting school students. Most other areas use ordinary public-service buses for the school runs. On average 480,000 yellow buses carry upwards of 25 million children to school on a daily basis in the US." says Electric Hybrid Vehicle Technology website, the problem is, they're dirty diesel: "poor air quality has been proven to be responsible for high rates of asthma, cancer, and heart disease; and research by scientists at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health has shown that just a small increase in fine-particulate pollution, such as that from the diesel engines of school buses, results in a 15 percent increase in the death rate due to COVID-19. . President Elect Joe Biden’s Build Back Better plan for creating a more resilient, sustainable economy proposes making all American-made buses zero-emission by 2030, starting with the school bus fleet, which would convert within five years."   The buses are currently made in Alabama, California, Georgia, Indiana, Minnesota, New York, and both North & South Carolina.   There is an unusual bias in the U.S., so far in 2020 there were 40,714 school buses registered and 5,402 city buses.   A problem is the price, 350k compared to 100k for diesel. Ulbrich discussed the challenges of refitting eight of the automaker's global plants to build full-electric cars"   On retooling for the ID.3: "We converted the plant virtually during ongoing operations. In one half of the plant, we were still building full numbers of combustion engines when we started with the electric vehicles in the other half. But in the end, everything worked despite the enormous challenges that the coronavirus pandemic demands of all of us"   On the MEB platform: " Even at the development stage, we designed the platform in such a way that we have far-reaching synergies through identical parts for different vehicles and different models. This time, we made sure that the concept of the bodies was identical across all brands, so that we had sufficiently differentiated vehicles in terms of design, but which we could still build on one assembly line."   On expansion: "The two plants in China, Anting and Foshan, will start up this year. The same applies to Skoda's production in Mlada Boleslav in the Czech Republic. Dresden in Germany will follow at the beginning of 2021, Emden and Hanover, aso in Germany, in 2022. In the second half of 2022, Chattanooga will also start up in the U.S."   On scale: "Our goal is to build 1 million EVs for the Volkswagen brand alone in 2023 and to achieve global output of 1.5 million by 2025. The MEB-based vehicles of the other group brands will then be added."   On how important the ID.4 is: "It is particularly important at the start of our electric offensive that we serve the volume segments. That's the best way to achieve economies of scale and make full use of our plants. SAIC, one of China's largest car makers by sales volume, said Thursday that it has teamed up with a Shanghai company and Alibaba Group Holding to run the project called Zhi Ji." according to MorningStar.com: "Zhi Ji will launch luxurious electric-vehicle models, SAIC said, without providing details on the timeline, pricing or sales target. Alibaba's role is more of a technology provider for the project, a company spokeswoman said. The Blitz-badged electric vehicles will next year take part in their own one-make series – the ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup. Two complete rounds of the German Rally Championship (DRM) were rehearsed during the three-day test programme – including special stages, road sections and servicing. The unique features of electro-mobility, such as times spent driving and charging, temperature management of the battery and fine-tuning the software, were tested for the first time in a rally environment. The world premiere of the ID.4 follows at the end of September. Preparations to roll out the electric SUV at international level are also in full swing. Pre-production of the ID.4 has already started at the Anting plant in China, the Chattanooga site will start the ID.4 production in 2022. The SUV will initially be launched with rear-wheel drive, while an electric all-wheel drive version will be added a later date.   PushEVs points out: "The Volkswagen ID.4 made in Europe is using the new NCM 712 battery cells made by LG Chem in Poland. Later on, the made in USA version will get its battery cells from SK Innovation and the made in China version will probably get its battery cells from CATL. Made with very energy dense and affordable NCM 712 batteries – that cost below 100 euros per kWh -, the expensive Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4 will be extremely profitable electric cars (on average way more than 15.000 euros per unit). That’s why Volkswagen will only try to sell the cheaper electric triplets (UpMiiGo) made on the old MQB platform when it’s required to reach EU emissions targets. This year thanks to the COVID-19 lockdowns, ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) car sales dropped a lot, this is great but also means that Volkswagen won’t have to sell as many electric cars as it was previously expected. Tap “Show Suspension Data” to get even more real-time information. Adaptive Suspension Damping now has an ADVANCED setting that allows you to set custom levels of Ride Comfort and Handling in addition to the existing COMFORT, AUTO, and SPORT settings. We have simplified the Tesla suspension control logic to better support both temporary and more permanent heights. If Ride Heights is manually adjusted to High or Very High, your car now automatically lowers after you drive a short distance. For snowy or off-road conditions, tap “Keep” next to the Ride Height slider to keep the height at High or Very High until you reach the maximum allowed speed. In preparation for this transition, officials and pertinent organizations are now initiating a deeper dive into the technology." says Tesmanian: "The call for evidence will look at the Automated Lane Keeping System (ALKS)--an automated technology that can take over control of the vehicle at low speeds, keeping it in the lane on motorways. Following the approval of ALKS Regulation in June 2020 by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE)--of which the UK is a member--the technology is likely to be available in cars entering the UK market from Spring 2021. The cheapest Nio car after subsidies is now an ES6 sport-utility vehicle (SUV) priced 273,600 yuan ($39,553) without ownership of the battery pack, versus 343,600 yuan including the pack. Nio operates 143 battery-swapping stations around China, where drivers can swap spent battery packs for fully charged replacements.  Nio’s battery packs are the same shape and size across its lineup, which is comprised of three SUVs. It looks to be a limited-edition model, which is strange considering it makes less power and costs less than the full-fat model, called the ‘EV320 SE’. That numbers refers to the metric horsepower, which translates to 238kW. " according to stuff.co.nz: "Jag reckons the SUV will hit 100kmh in 6.4 seconds, compared to 4.8 for the existing EV400. Velocity tops out 180kmh versus 200kmh but range is an identical 480km. Being a special edition, the EV320 gets optional extras thrown on as standard. That includes 20-inch wheels, an electrically-opening boot, electric heated mirrors, LED headlights, 14-way adjustable leather sports seats, driving assists and a pair of touchscreens on the centre console. Roomzz. The seven-seater is apparently first set for launch on the Chinese market in 2021, presumably as VW ID.6." reports Electrive: "The plant in Anting is operated in cooperation with joint venture partner SAIC and is the first plant from the German carmaking giant in China that is entirely focussed on electric cars. According to information available, series production was scheduled to start in October 2020. It seems the model will initially be available only with four-wheel drive, the power ratings are 225 and 300 kW. Then it's the eGolf, BMW i3, Model S, Kia Soul, Model 3, Model X and Renault Zoe.   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   LEE BROWN “I have to sit on the fence with this one. Our first EV is a 30kWh Leaf which was purchased used and for the small commutes the right prices compared to buying new. But we have an eNiro on order as our second EV which should arrive within the next few months. We had to go new for this as there’s not much second hand for that price range that’ll do almost 300 miles with a 7 year warranty”   JOHN FRUHWIRTH To answer this week's question, I have always bought used vehicles. I did the same with my Tesla. Being a cheapskate, I had always wanted to avoid the steep depreciation associated with buying a new vehicle. All I ever wanted from a vehicle was economy, reliability and functionality. That's why I had been driving mini vans. That was the case until I was soon to turn 70, felt my mortality and learned about Tesla. So, I decided that, at this time in my life, I would get the best car I could get for $100k (some cheapskate, eh?). I bought my dream car, a 2016 Red Tesla Model S P90D. By the time I got it, it was 2 years old and $65k cheaper than when it was new. It is now technologically obsolete but I don't care. It is everything I could want.   JOHN HARCOMBE IN GLASGOW NEW of course, as everyone loves that new smell. That is if you can afford new. Education is main thing with EV- Goggle- Tesla Incentives Shows all ev manufactures incentives of buying EV weather staff threw salary sacrifice and free charging, or company savings of total cost of ownership which the bean counters love.   RAJEEV NARAYAN I bought my two EVs new because, as you alluded to recently, we often buy cars with our hearts and not our heads. That being said the best value for money is probably a used lightly used EV . A lightly used Tesla or even a Chevy Bolt could be a very good deal. I might be cautious with an older Nissan Leaf given what I have heard about their air cooled batteries and degradation.   DAVID GUERRIERO I currently drive a 2012 Audi A5 convertible, bought used with low miles. LOVE IT!  Will they ever build a convertible EV?  I buy my cars lightly used. My next car will be an EV or high ev miles PHEV.  I can not afford to buy a brand new car/EV that I like. My EV will be used unless I hit the lottery!   UNDERSTAND THIS  Used car for sure. We always pay cash for cars and the price must not exceed 2% of our net worth. In 2 or 3 years we can buy new...for now used only. Even then we may not, as the value of a 3 to 5 years old car is so much better than new :)   MICHAEL ARBER I'm soon to retire so I am expecting to do less that 5,000 miles a year.  In which case there is no way I can justify a new electric car as, the cost saving will never cover the high cost over a ICE.  The most sensible would be a high mileage used recent model.  Perhaps a recent battery lease Zoe then buy the battery (as I understand you can now do).  Any thoughts?     QUESTION OF THE WEEK   What car have you driven in your lifetime you would love to be able to convert to EV?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 235 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. The Chattanooga site, where production begins in 2022, will be Volkswagen’s North American assembly base for electric vehicles. Volkswagen began long-range EV production earlier this month in Zwickau, Germany, and will then roll out assembly worldwide, including in Anting and Foshan, in China, in 2020 and in the German cities of Emden and Hanover by 2022. The Chattanooga site will be VW’s North-American hub for EV manufacturing. Volkswagen’s investment of about $800 million in the Chattanooga facility will require the addition of about 1,000 jobs. The production version of the ID. CROZZ will initially be assembled in Zwickau. Production of that vehicle is set to begin in Chattanooga in 2022.   GERMAN STATES HAVE BEEN COURTING TESLA There's a great analysis of the Gigafactory 4 decision from Bloomberg reporters. "Ramona Pop [a mayor of Berlin and Senator for Economy, Energy and Enterprises] responded with a two-page letter that waxed lyrical about Musk as a pioneer and visionary and offered financial sweeteners to attract him to a city bustling with a vibrant tech scene and a network of auto research institutes." says Bloomberg: "Two federal states that border France also touted their virtues. he European Gigafactory would sit on the outskirts of Berlin, with an additional engineering and design center within the city limits.  Labor costs in eastern Germany are generally lower than in the traditional engineering hubs in the southern part of the country."   But is labor cost the real issue here? As per Reuters: "While the average combustion engine takes 3.5 hours to make, and the average transmission requires 2.7 hours of assembly, an electric motor takes only about 1 hour to assemble, consultants at Alix Partners said in their Global Automotive Outlook study. Today the biggest cost factor is still battery packs, which amount to between 30% and 50% of the cost of an electric vehicle."   Back to Bloomberg: "The area where Tesla plans to put the factory, called Gruenheide just east of Berlin in the state of Brandenburg, provides quick access via the Autobahn and a link to public transport. It’s a site that BMW had considered before choosing the city of Leipzig a few hours south for a new factory in 2001. The government in Brandenburg, one of five federal states in the former communist east, also lobbied hard to win over Musk, offering at least 100 million euros in aid."   Reuters reports on the financial aid being given to all auto makers to ensure GErmany's dominance: "German carmakers and suppliers are tapping in to a 1 billion euro ($1.10 billion) fund set up by Germany to increase battery cell production and are further aided by a government-funded research facility to increase battery cell development know-how."   And the key section from the Bloomberg piece: "Musk had a demand that was as clear as it was hard to execute for notoriously bureaucratic Germans: to build the site as swiftly as the one in Shanghai, according to Brandenburg’s economy minister, Joerg Steinbach.";   We know all future Gigafactories will be all-in-one solutions, they will make the battery, the powertrains and stamp the vehicles. Goleta’s existing Ellwood peaker plant, like many gas-powered plants, faces retirement. Smaller 10- and 20-megawatt battery storage facilities are planned in Carpinteria, Ventura, and a second one in Goleta."   https://www.independent.com/2019/11/13/major-battery-storage-facility-planned-in-goleta/   TESLA PLANS NEW MASSIVE V3 SUPERCHARGER STATION CONNECTING LA TO PHX "Tesla has promised to incrementally roll out more Supercharging stations over time, with specific emphasis on its new V3 technology, reportedly in the process of starting construction on a huge, 28-stall Supercharger station that will connect Los Angeles to Phoenix." reports Steven Loveday at InsideEVs"   https://insideevs.com/news/382042/tesla-plans-v3-supercharger-station-la-phx/   And from BuffaloXpress.com: "The Tesla Supercharger station in Kettleman City between San Francisco and Los Angeles and isn’t Tesla’s most significant on the earth. However, it’s the largest within the US, and it’s the most representative of Tesla’s vision for charging stations. It’s equipped with not solely 40 Supercharger stalls but in addition batteries, solar arrays, and even a lounge for Tesla owners. With Tesla already demonstrating Chinese produced Model 3s to the Chinese press, this step is seen as the last official hurdle before Tesla officially begins production and starts the process of ramping up consumer cars “Made in China.” says CleanTechnica: "Media outlet SINA reports that MIIT has agreed to allow Tesla (Shanghai) Co. The streamlined solution to electric-car charging has been deployed in major European cities but not so much yet in America." according to Bradley at Electrek: "The city’s conversion of street lights to energy-efficient LEDs made the EV solution possible. The fee for charging is typically $1 to $2 per hour. Parking is free. To be clear, Lordstown Motors is a new company that was specifically set up to buy the Lordstown plant. It was created by Steve Burns, the founder and former CEO of struggling electric vehicle startup Workhorse. Workhorse has sold electric delivery vans in the past, and is in the running for the contract to build the United States Postal Service’s next-generation vehicle. But the company has recently found itself in dire financial straits. Congratulations to our colleagues in Anting, who will further prepare to produce the first China-model of the Volkswagen ID. family here in Shanghai. China is the largest market for electric vehicles in the entire world and GM is absolutely catering to that reality." reports CNET: "On that note, China's latest electric-car entree is served. This is the Chevy Menlo EV that debuted on Friday. Before you ask, no, this isn't coming to the US. A Chevy representative confirmed to Roadshow that the model is specific to China and the company has zero intention of bringing it to the US.  The range figure is pretty close to the Buick Velite 6's as well, which likely means the two share a lot of technology. The Velite 6 is another China-only EV that GM sells locally. Anting (using ants for feather cleaning) trogon birds will be among the fascinating jungle inhabitants discussed, as well as various mammals, reptiles and insects. Speaker Bio: Ray Mendez is a Manhattan native who started his career at the American Museum of Natural History in NYC. He first worked in the Department of Animal Behavior, next in Entomology as a taxonomist, and finally as Senior Artist in the Exhibits Department. After leaving the museum he started his own firm, Work As Play. His projects have ranged from the insect wrangler (he coined the phrase) to movies such as Silence of the Lambs to designing exhibits for museums and zoos all over the world, including the first two trash museums in the US. He also has worked on large theme park projects such as Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The natural world and especially its small residents have always been his passion and he has served on the board of the Asa Wright Nature Center in Trinidad and Tobago for over 30 years.
