French authorities say a defective airbag manufactured by now-bankrupt Japanese firm Takata was responsible for the fatal injuries sustained by a driver who died of a road accident last week. France's transport minister has called for all Citroen C3 and DS3 models fitted with recalled airbags to be taken off the road. Plus, at the Paris Air Show, aerospace giants and startups alike are showcasing technologies to make aviation greener.

Ford's Vice Chair John Lawler recently dropped a bombshell that's sent ripples through the automotive world: combustion engines will no longer be brand differentiators and automakers will increasingly source them from suppliers to stay competitive against low-cost rivals, particularly from China. For generations, car manufacturers have built their identities around their signature powertrains – Ford's EcoBoost, Chrysler's HEMI, Chevy's small-block V8s – engines that enthusiasts could identify by sound alone. But according to Lawler, "consumers don't really think about powertrains the way they did 30 years ago." The shift toward hybridization has already begun stripping away the unique characteristics of combustion engines as electric motors increasingly provide power boosts and emission reductions. We dubbed this the "skateboard effect" – the standardization that began with electric vehicles is now creeping into traditional combustion engine territory. This raises profound questions about brand identity, warranties, and consumer choice. If Ford, Chevy, and Ram all use identical engines from the same supplier, how will they differentiate their trucks beyond cosmetics and features? What happens when an outsourced engine faces recalls – will we see industry-wide disruptions similar to the Takata airbag crisis? And perhaps most importantly, what does this mean for performance vehicle segments and enthusiast markets that have thrived on distinctive powertrains? This philosophical shift signals how dramatically electrification has changed the industry's trajectory, even for traditional combustion vehicles. While average consumers might not notice the difference, this potential outsourcing strategy represents perhaps the most fundamental change to how cars are designed, built, and marketed since the mass production of the automobile began. Join us as we explore what this means for the future of automotive enthusiasm and brand loyalty in an increasingly homogenized market.Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links.
Ouça a conversa completa!

In today's episode, serious concerns over delays in locating and informing car owners about safety recalls, particularly those involving defective Takata airbags, were raised on Wednesday during testimony before a parliamentary committee investigating the vehicle recall system in Cyprus.Elsewhere, Limassol district court ruled on Wednesday that the remains of murdered conscript Thanasis Nicolaou must be handed over to his family for reburial within seven days. Also, the government's proposed legislation to regulate traditional Easter bonfires—known as “lambriadjies”—will not be passed before Easter, it was confirmed on Wednesday. All this and more in today's Daily News Briefing brought to you by the Cyprus Mail.

Europe's gas demand dropped to an 11-year low in 2024, with imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) declining 19 percent from the previous year. However, imports of Russian LNG into the EU increased by 18 percent, with France, Spain and Belgium sourcing the most, according to a new industry report. Also on the show: Stellantis issues a "stop drive" order on around 250,000 Citroën cars over potentially deadly airbags produced by now-defunct Takata, extending an existing recall nationwide.
In today's episode, the recall of vehicles fitted with deadly Takata airbags is proving a nightmare for Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades, and not least because the grieving father of a young man killed in one airbag-linked accident is an old classmate of the minister. Elsewhere, Toyota's dealership in Cyprus is set to make a whopping €4.8 million by charging “administrative costs” for free airbag replacements in 30,000 of the over 80,000 recalled cars. All this and more in today's Daily News Briefing brought to you by the Cyprus Mail.
In today's episode, Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades confirmed that decrees for the recall of vehicles fitted with faulty Takata airbags will be issued on Monday. The airbags, which can explode in high heat or humidity, have been linked to fatalities, including two recent deaths in Cyprus. Elsewhere, President Christodoulides presented his vision for Cyprus, but reactions were divided. Government supporters praised his focus on economic growth, infrastructure, and security, while opposition parties, including Akel and Disy, criticized the lack of concrete action. Elsewhere, Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis has confirmed the transport ministry is reviewing decrees to address the ongoing issue of faulty Takata airbags. AP correspondent Haya Panjwani reports on the US reporting the 28th death caused by exploding Takata air bag inflators that can spew shrapnel
Today's Headlines: The US Air Force is refusing to clean up drinking water it contaminated with toxic "forever chemicals" near its bases in Tucson, Arizona, citing the Supreme Court's recent overturning of the Chevron deference doctrine, which limits the EPA's authority to enforce such cleanups. This comes after the EPA ordered the Air Force and National Guard to address the issue in May. Meanwhile, Ilhan Omar won her primary in Minnesota, ultra-MAGA Eric Hovde secured the GOP Senate nomination in Wisconsin, and Wisconsin voters rejected two Republican ballot measures. Inflation numbers show a 2.9% rise in the core Consumer Price Index, the lowest since 2021. Hurricane Ernesto, now a Category 1 storm, has left nearly half of Puerto Rico without power, and Ford and Mazda have issued a recall warning due to dangerous airbag inflators in certain older models. In the second half of the twentieth century, Reiki went from an obscure therapy practiced by a few thousand Japanese and Japanese Americans to a global phenomenon. By the early twenty-first century, people in nearly every corner of the world have undergone the initiations that authorize them to channel a cosmic energy—known as Reiki—to heal body, mind, and spirit. They lay hands on themselves and others, use secret symbols and incantations to send Reiki to distant recipients, and strive to follow five precepts to cultivate their spiritual growth. Reiki's international rise and development is due to the work of Hawayo Takata (1900–1980), a Hawai‘i-born Japanese American woman who brought Reiki out of Japan and adapted it for thousands of students in Hawai‘i and North America, shaping interconnections across the North Pacific region as well as cultural transformations over the transwar period spanning World War II. Alternate Currents: Reiki's Circulation in the Twentieth-Century North Pacific (U Hawaii Press, 2023) analyzes how, from her training in Japan in the mid-1930s to her death in Iowa in 1980, Takata built a vast trans-Pacific network that connected Japanese American laborers on Hawai‘i plantations to social elites in Tokyo, Hollywood, and New York; middle-class housewives in American suburbs; and off-the-grid tree planters in the mountains of British Columbia. Using recently uncovered archival materials and original oral histories, this book examines how these relationships between healer and patient, master and disciple, became deeply infused with values of their time and place and how they interplayed with Reiki's circulation, performance, and meanings along with broader cultural shifts in the twentieth-century North Pacific. Highly readable and informative, each chapter is structured around a period in the life of Takata, the charismatic, rags-to-riches architect of the network in which Reiki spread for decades. Alternate Currents explores Reiki as an exemplary transnational spiritual therapy, demonstrating how lived practices transcend artificial distinctions between religion and medicine, and circulate in global systems while maintaining strong connections with the practices' homeland. Happy Monday, Alchemist! It's common in Reiki training to learn about the history of Reiki, and to learn about three people: Usui Sensei, Hayashi Sensei, and Ms. Takata. But you may be surprised to know how influential and vital other women were in the presence of Reiki today. On this episode, we learn from Amanda Jayne, co-author of, Women in Reiki. She shares some stories of women in Reiki, as well as her own journey with the practice. Amanda has been interested in health and the healing arts for a long time, and after finishing University she began to pursue a career in the field of psychology. It was only a couple of years later, after her father died of cancer, and her own health was not so great, that she decided to leave her job to go and see the world. Amanda wanted to explore the healing that could be found in the wonder of seeing and experiencing amazing, beautiful places and learning about other cultures firsthand. At some point, she ended up studying Reiki in Japan, which you'll hear more about.
