Auto manufacturers are no longer building less expensive cars due to various reasons, including shifting consumer preferences towards larger and more luxurious vehicles, increasing production costs, and tighter emission regulations. This has led to the discontinuation of several affordable models such as the Chevy Spark and the Chevrolet Volt. Instead, automakers are focusing on building and selling more expensive and luxury cars, which have higher profit margins and offer advanced features and technologies that consumers are willing to pay for. Furthermore, many car companies are investing in electric vehicles, which require substantial investments in research and development, and manufacturing, which makes them more expensive to produce

Joe Wiesenfelder is the executive editor of Cars.com and he's immersed in the future of EVs — electric vehicles. According to the website's recent data, about one-third of car buyers are actively looking to purchase their first electric vehicle. But many questions remain with the anticipated growth. Wiesenfelder and his colleagues are counting on it. Wiesenfelder is our guest on this episode of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Rivian and it electric trucks and SUVs are potential competitors for Tesla and are part of the new segment of EVs entering the automative marketplace. Images © James Raia. EVs: Marketplace will expand Co-host Bruce Aldrich and I discuss with the long-time journalist the future of the electric vehicle market and the goal of Cars.com to assist consumers with their buying decisions. "Cars.com bought its first plug-ins a decade ago, a Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt, and we have since continued to evaluate scores of other electric models," Wiesenfelder said. "Expanding beyond just how the cars drive, we live with EVs and test the range, as well as the cost and setup associated with home charging." "With all the buzz surrounding EVs, our team will cover everything from charging setup and other considerations to our thoughts on some of the more popular EVs.”   The Tesla Model X, which debuted in 2015, is part of  current leader among EVs. Electric vehicle information comprises only about five percent of the current searches on Cars.com. But by its calculations, more than 100 new options are expected to join the market in the next five years. EVs: West Coast Growth Expected The EV market share is predicted to grow, notably Cars.com believes, in Denver, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Francisco and Seattle. With the pending market expansion, Cars.com hosted a live webinar: Guide For The EV Curious, on Oct. 28. We interviewed Wiesenfelder before the event, but his thoughts on the industry are relevant anytime. EVs: Buying, Leasing, Charging With other editors and contributors to the publication, Wiesenfelder discussed the rise in consumers' interest in EVs, buying/leasing EVs, charging barriers and the most popular new EV makes and models. According to Cars.com, local dealerships also have to prepare to meet demand. Currently, only 37 percent of local dealerships are selling electric vehicles, while 63 percent are actively planning for EV sales, service and training. On Cars.com 41 percent of new car dealers listed inventory of new electric vehicles. EVs: Uncertainty Remains “On Cars.com, searches for EVs have almost doubled since last year — however, sales of EVs are growing at a slower rate," said Wiesenfelder "There's no doubt that consumer interest in EVs is growing, especially as more major automakers commit to the category and offer more SUV and pickup truck options for shoppers, but to the average person, uncertainty still exists." It's rumored that soon Tesla will also be releasing its own CCS adapter for the North American market.   - owners of CHAdeMO-equipped vehicles will still have the existing 800+ Electrify America charging stations that have CHAdeMO connectors, plus the many hundreds of CHAdeMO stations currently in service in the US on other EV charging networks like Blink, EVgo, ChargePoint, and more.   Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/522882/electrify-america-ends-chademo-installations/   TESLA BATTERY SUPPLIER CATL DEBUTS CHEAPER SODIUM-ION BATTERIES   - Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. unveiled a sodium-ion battery Thursday, a type of lower-density cell that uses cheaper raw materials than batteries made from lithium-ion metals.   - Fujian-based company also launched a battery-pack solution that can integrate sodium-ion cells and lithium-ion cells into one case, compensating for the energy-density shortage of the former while preserving its advantages.   - “Sodium-ion batteries have unique advantages in low-temperature performance, fast charging and environmental adaptability,” CATL Chairman Zeng Yuqun said. “Moreover, they're compatible and complementary with lithium-ion batteries. Diversified technical routes are an important guarantee for the long-term development of the industry.”   - Notwithstanding, CATL said that through breakthroughs in R&D, its first-generation sodium-ion batteries have reached 160 watt-hours/kilogram, a measure of energy density of energy, and should exceed 200 Wh/kg in coming generations.   Original Source : https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-07-29/catl-debuts-sodium-ion-batteries-amid-raw-material-cost-spike   FORD QUICKLY REACHES 120,000 ORDERS FOR ITS TESLA CYBERTRUCK RIVAL   - The interest appears to be building for Ford's first-ever all-electric F-150 dubbed the Lightning.Ford (F) has amassed 120,000 orders for the Lightning, CEO Jim Farley told investors on an earnings call Wednesday evening. About 75% of the orders are from those people new to the Ford brand, Farley said.   - "I would say what we've learned so far [from Lightning orders] is that the customers are largely new to Ford, but they aren't new to the segment. These are customers who really like these silhouetted vehicles. What is really interesting for me is some would portray the full-size truck industry as kind of a conservative customer. It's not what we're seeing. In this very large order bank for F-150 Lightning, they're new to BEV [battery electric vehicle], and they are excited to move to BEV. More than half of them are pickup truck customers,"   Original Source : https://finance.yahoo.com/news/ford-quickly-reaches-120000-orders-for-its-tesla-cybertruck-rival-112120668.html   BIDEN PLAN WOULD TIGHTEN MILEAGE FOR NEW CARS OVER THE NEXT FOUR YEARS   - The Biden administration has drafted emissions rules for new cars that would reverse a rollback in regulations brought in under Donald Trump, the Washington Post reports. It notes that the measures are set to resemble a 2019 pact between the state of California and five car makers that mandates a 3.7% annual increase in fuel economy through to 2026.   - Bloomberg notes that activists had previously pressed Biden for emissions curbs that at least matched the 5% reduction he helped broker as Obama's vice president, rather than adopting the “more modest” Californian target in the short term.   Original Source : https://www.carbonbrief.org/daily-brief/biden-plan-would-tighten-mileage-for-new-cars-over-the-next-four-years   LG AND MAGNA FORM ELECTRIC POWERTRAIN JOINT VENTURE TO TARGET EV MARKET   - LG Electronics and Magna International have officially signed a transaction agreement to establish the pair's joint venture that was first announced in December last year. The new company, called LG Magna e-Powertrain, will be based in Incheon, South Korea, and have an initial workforce of more than 1,000 people.   - The pair are hoping the joint venture will combine Magna's strength in electric powertrain systems and LG's expertise in components, such as e-motors and inverters, to expand their presence in the global electric car market. The joint venture will manufacture e-motors, inverters, and on-board chargers. It will also supply components related to e-drive systems.   Original Source : https://www.zdnet.com/article/lg-and-magna-form-electric-powertrain-joint-venture-to-target-ev-market/   TESLA LAUNCHES MAJOR SHIFT IN RETAIL STRATEGY   - Tesla (TSLA) is currently implementing a major shift in its retail strategy, according to sources familiar with the matter. The automaker will move away from showrooms in fancy malls, and instead it will focus on cheaper locations, remote managing of test drive fleet, and delivery centers.   - In 2018, the automaker announced a focus on high foot-traffic retail locations in high-end malls. A year later, CEO Elon Musk surprised everyone, including his own employees, when he announced that Tesla would be closing most retail stores, laying off retail employees, and focusing entirely on online orders.   - The new strategy will see Tesla letting go of most of its high-rent locations in malls and shopping districts in favor of delivery centers.   - But Tesla still plans to expand its physical presence.  However, instead of expensive spaces in malls and shopping districts, the automaker is looking to rent spaces in mall parking lots, warehouses, and other locations to manage test drive fleets and delivery centers.   - Tesla employees working remotely will be able to guide buyers to go on test drives using vehicles from those locations, unlocking cars remotely, and letting them drive the cars.   Original Source : https://electrek.co/2021/07/28/tesla-tsla-major-shift-retail-strategy-cheaper-locations-remote-working/   MERCEDES EQS SUV SPIED WITH PRODUCTION LIGHTS, MAYBACH CONCEPT COMING SOON   - Our spies have caught the Mercedes EQS SUV on numerous occasions, but this is our first opportunity to check out the large electric vehicle with its final headlights and taillights. A   - the SUV version was caught undergoing testing in Germany ahead of its confirmed 2022 world premiere.   - It will be built in the United States at the Tuscaloosa plant from 2022 along with the smaller EQE SUV. These two dedicated EVs will join the EQA, EQB, and EQC – all three based on platforms originally intended for ICE – in the company's all-electric SUV portfolio. The highlight of Mercedes' electric efforts will be the Vision EQXX, a concept car coming in 2022 with the promise to cover 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) between charges.   Original Source : https://www.motor1.com/news/522964/mercedes-eqs-suv-spy-shots   ANALYSIS: TESLA HIKES ELECTRIC CAR PRICES IN U.S.; HOLDS LINE IN CHINA   - Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) showed signs of divergent strategies in the world's two biggest automotive markets, raising prices to boost profit margins in the United States while keeping prices steady in China and hoping to grow sales there.   - Tesla raised prices for the most affordable versions of Model 3 and Model Y about a dozen times this year in the United States, according to data tracked by Reuters. At the same time, Tesla recently introduced an affordable Model Y version in China, where it refrained from price hikes.   - Tesla raised prices for Model Y Long Range at least six times in the United States this year, bumping by $5,500 to $53,990.   Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/tesla-hikes-electric-car-prices-us-holds-line-china-2021-07-28/   TESLA AI DAY SCHEDULED FOR AUGUST 19, CONFIRMS MUSK   - Tesla's upcoming AI day would be held this coming August 19, 2021. The announcement was shared by Tesla CEO Elon Musk in a recent post on Twitter.   Musk did not share details about the upcoming event, though previous tweets about Tesla's AI Day suggest that the company would be going over the progress it has made in software and hardware, both in terms of training and inference. The CEO also previously mentioned that AI Day's primary purpose is recruitment.   - It would then be interesting to see how Tesla approaches its AI Day. With such a specialized topic and considering the company's experience in the subject, there is a fair chance that discussions and updates on the company's AI efforts may be lost in translation once more.   Original Source : https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-ai-day-final-date-elon-musk/   KELLEY BLUE BOOK NAMES BEST AFFORDABLE USED HYBRIDS, ELECTRIC VEHICLES FOR 2021   - To help car shoppers considering an affordable used hybrid or electric vehicle, the experts at Kelley Blue Book recently published the 10 Best Used Hybrids and EVs Under $20,000 and the 10 Best Used Hybrids and EVs Under $15,000.   - 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV   - 2018 Nissan Leaf   - 2017 Chevrolet Volt   - 2019 Kia Niro Hybrid   Original Source : https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/kelley-blue-book-names-best-affordable-used-hybrids-electric-vehicles-for-2021-301342868.html  m QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM   With 2877 Superchargers globally and 25000 stalls, what do you think about Tesla's plan to open up the network to everyone?   Email me your thoughts and I'll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I'll catch you tomorrow and remember…there's no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.   PREMIUM PARTNERS PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE BRAD CROSBY PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI AUDI CINCINNATI EAST VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/

The Blue Oval revealed Monday that the truck will be dubbed "F-150 Lightning." The vehicle itself will be unveiled May 19 via a livestreamed event from Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn." says The Detroit News: "F-150 Lightning is part of Ford's initial portfolio of electric vehicles that includes the Mustang Mach-E, which launched at the end of last year, and the forthcoming electric version of the Transit van."   https://eu.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/ford/2021/05/10/ford-announces-name-reveal-date-upcoming-battery-electric-f-150/5020845001/   MERCEDES-BENZ CONCEPT EQT "The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQT previews the brand’s new T-Class MPV, the electric version of which will be the ninth model from its EQ sub-brand" says Autocar today: "Set to rival the Volkswagen Caddy, Citroen Berlingo and Vauxhall Combo when UK sales get underway in 2022, the new model has been developed in partnership with Renault; the T-Class is twinned with the third-generation Kangoo, while the EQT is a sister model to the recently announced Kangoo E-Tech Electric. Audi has developed more new EVs in the past couple of years than Tesla has developed in its entire existence." points out the website Quattrodaily - so, they'll be a little biased!: "According Audi CEO Markus Duesmann, electric vehicles will make up half of the automotive market by 2030. In fact, Duesmann sees such a massive shift in the demand for electric vehicles that, as long as the infrastructure can support it, he doesn’t see a reason why any customer would want internal combustion if electric vehicles are available."   https://www.quattrodaily.com/audi-boss-thinks-electric-vehicles-will-be-half-of-the-market-by-2030/   FRANCE WRITES-OFF CHADEMO STANDARD IN NEW LEGISLATION "The end of the CHAdeMO fast-charging standard is on the horizon in France. While a 2017-decree made CHAdeMO mandatory for DC-charging stations alongside CCS and Type 2 by the end of 2024, the government has now revised its plans." writes electrive: "The decree, published in its revised form earlier this month, ends the requirement to implement the Japanese standard. From now on, only CCS for DC charging and Type 2 for AC charging (22 kW) is considered mandatory for newly installed and replaced fast-charging stations in France. The French decree further stresses the requirement of interoperability and introduces obligations in terms of quality of service. CPOs and networks must make their commitments public, for example, “report periodically” on the quality levels achieved."   https://www.electrive.com/2021/05/10/france-writes-off-chademo-standard-in-new-legislation/   ARE ELECTRIC FIRE TRUCKS IN THE NEAR FUTURE? "However, it wasn’t until recently that innovators began to apply electric technology to emergency vehicles. Now, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) is showing off North America’s first electric fire engine from Austria-based Rosenbauer Group." says Clean Fleet Report: "However, the vehicle isn’t fully electric. It’s a series plug-in hybrid like the Chevrolet Volt. Volvo Penta, which has created electric powertrains for a variety of applications, will power the Revolutionary Technology fire truck. The electric drive unit is based on one use in terminal tractors. To test durability, Rosenbauer will also test three more trucks in Berlin, Amsterdam and Dubai. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   We'll start with you weekend long reads - if you have 10 - 15 mins I recommend these articles:     TIME FOR OHIO TO EMBRACE ELECTRIC TRANSPORTATION https://eu.cincinnati.com/story/opinion/2021/03/19/opinion-time-ohio-embrace-electric-transportation/4767483001/   SEATTLE’S VISION FOR AN ALL-ELECTRIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM https://southseattleemerald.com/2021/03/20/weekend-long-reads-seattles-vision-for-an-all-electric-transportation-system/   A CHAT WITH DEREK JENKINS, LUCID MOTORS SENIOR V.P. OF DESIGN https://www.autoblog.com/2021/03/18/lucid-motors-derek-jenkins-interview-gravity-air-electric-vehicles/#slide-2262267   PATENT REVEALS NEW IMAGES OF LUCID MOTORS’ GRAVITY SUV "Lucid’s astute forum members have uncovered news the automaker may or may not want the public to see yet. Patent images of Lucid Motors’ upcoming Gravity SUV were uncovered in a filing with the EUIPO." asys electrk: "Lucid has added a lot more glass to its roof compared to the concept images. This should let in a lot more natural light and help the interior cabin feel roomier overall.  front end appears to be slightly bigger, while the back end is noticeably so. The concept back end sort of bubbled out, but it appears Lucid has now moved the rear bumper out further. This should allow for more cargo. Additionally, it looks like Lucid plans to add slightly wider glass to the rear as well, again allowing more natural light within the SUV and better visibility looking out the back."   https://electrek.co/2021/03/18/patent-reveals-new-images-of-lucid-motors-gravity-suv/   Let's mop up some of the news from Thursday as the UK cut the EV grant from £3000 to £2500, but more importantly slashed the threshold from £50k to £35k, and even more importantly did it immediately.   UK EV PRICES REDUCED DUE TO GRANT CHANGE   "Many car firms will now be adjusting their prices, like Citroen, to come in under the ceiling. Citroen’s price changes will mean all variants of the electric hatchback will now qualify for the government’s plug-in car grant. The French firm reduced the price of is top-spec e-C4 Shine Plus models by £550 meaning that the entirety of the range is eligible for the grant." says CarDealer Magazine: "On the road pricing for the e-C4 now starts from £30,895 to £32,495, inclusive of the £2,500 grant. MG said on Friday that it will continue to offer buyers of its electric vehicles a £3,000 discount. The firm pledged to make up the additional £500 until the end of the month in a critical plate change month for the motor trade."   AutoExpress add: "Shine Plus version of its new all-electric family hatchback is the most popular variant. It is just one of many electric cars on sale in Britain that may now receive a retail price cut in order to still qualify for the newly reduced grant.  This particular e-C4 was previously priced from £35,495 and the new on-the-road price stands at £34,995. The e-C4 makes use of a 134bhp electric motor and 50kWh battery system and Citroen claims a maximum range of 217 miles on a full charge."   As for the VW range, they opted not to change any prices. But did put out a press release reminding you that two of their ID.3 models were available under the threshold unlike just one which I said yesterday.  “D.3 Life Pro and ID.3 Life Pro Performance.  The ID.3 Life Pro Performance went on sale late last year and has since gone on to be crowned ‘Small Electric Car of the Year’ by What Car? at its Car of the Year Awards 2021. It features a 204 PS motor and 58 kWh battery (net capacity), which provides a WLTP range of 263 miles.  the ID.3 Life Pro was introduced and offers a new motor option and lower price for entry into the ID.3 range. It retains the 58 kWh batteryt”   And the new ID.3 Pure model with a 45kWh battery is out later this year.   https://cardealermagazine.co.uk/publish/car-firms-move-to-cut-ev-prices-after-governments-shock-move-to-slash-plug-in-car-grant-funding/219685   HOW THE PORSCHE TAYCAN'S INNOVATIVE ELECTRIC MOTORS WORK "Many EVs such as the Audi e-tron use a more affordable asynchronous machine (ASM) or asynchronous electric motor, but Porsche uses a permanently excited synchronous machine (PSM) that it says is less prone to overheating." says Carbuzz: "Describing the supply and control of three-phase AC voltage for the PSM, Porsche says: "The speed of the motor is determined by the frequency at which the alternating voltage oscillates around the zero point from plus to minus. In Taycan motors, the pulse inverter sets the frequency of the rotating field in the stator, thereby regulating the speed of the rotor."   https://carbuzz.com/news/heres-how-the-porsche-taycans-innovative-electric-motors-work   EUROPEAN ENGINEERS TACKLE EV LIGHTWEIGHTING "Engineers at the Technological Institute of Aragon (ITAINNOVA) here are coordinating a new European Union initiative to develop lightweight components for electric vehicles." says AssemblyMag.coM: "These technologies can directly contribute to improving vehicle efficiency in terms of kilowatt hours consumed per kilometer, as well as vehicle autonomy, and also reduce environmental impact."...focusing on three different components: a cross beam, a suspension control arm, and a battery clamping and packing system."   https://www.assemblymag.com/articles/96240-european-engineers-tackle-ev-lightweighting   FOUR EVS MERCEDES IS BRINGING TO THE U.S. BY 2022 "The US was supposed to get the Mercedes-Benz EQC electric SUV but that didn’t happen and it never will. But that’s okay because the US will be getting four EVs over the next two years from the German luxury automaker’s EQ sub-brand. " according to InsideEVs: "Interestingly, two sedans will arrive first, not SUVs. The 2022 Mercedes EQS sedan will go on sale this fall and will soon enter production in Germany. The report didn’t mention a reveal date, but it’s likely around the corner. The EQE sedan is based on the same platform as the EQS and deliveries will start in 2022. The driving range is in the area of 400 miles.  Mercedes-EQ’s two electric SUVs will be built in its Tuscaloosa, Alabama factory in 2022 (this was announced in December). Each one is an SUV variant of the EQS and EQE sedans and shares the same name."   https://insideevs.com/news/494819/these-four-evs-mercedes-bringing-us-2022   NISSAN IN TWEET STORM AS E-POWER AD HITS A FALSE NOTE "Twitter has been ablaze with users airing their views on what they consider misleading claims by Nissan. They say the company hit the wrong note when proclaiming that the e-Power drive has a “100% electric motor-driven system.”" reports electrive: " the drive’s main energy source is not the battery but a gasoline engine that acts exclusively as a generator. Twitter users know that. Their responses ranged from irritation – “wait, is it a hybrid?” – to distain as this example shows: “Wait a minute. You just invented a car with a gas burning engine which powers an electric motor? I mean… Congratulations, Nissan. You just invented the 2011 Chevrolet Volt. What a billion dollar facepalm.” Nissan is not alone in trying to make their cars sound greener than they are. We remember that Toyota and Lexus would repeatedly advertise their simple hybrid models as “self-charging”. A claim so misleading, the Norwegian Consumer Agency banned such commercials."   https://www.electrive.com/2021/03/17/nissan-in-tweet-storm-as-e-power-ad-hits-a-false-note/   SPAIN, SEAT, & IBERDROLA WILL USE EU FUNDS FOR EV BATTERY FACTORY "Spain plans to use funding from the European Union to create a public-private consortium with Volkswagen Group’s SEAT, based in Spain, and the power company Iberdrola to build Spain’s first EV battery factory. " says CleanTechnica: "Battery production would create many jobs, and it would be supporting the key need for much more climate-fighting cleantech, in this case electric vehicles. Spain was looking to revamp Nissan’s main car plant near Barcelona into a battery production facility in order to preserve thousands of jobs. That plant closed back in December.".   https://cleantechnica.com/2021/03/17/spain-seat-iberdrola-will-use-eu-funds-for-ev-battery-factory/   VOLVO GROUP VENTURE CAPITAL INVESTS IN DRIIVZ EV CHARGING SOFTWARE COMPANY Volvo Group Venture Capital has invested in Driivz Ltd., a leading global EV charging software company which has developed a platform for managing large charging networks for electric vehicles from end-to-end. The Driivz platform functions as an operating system for EV charging networks and is used by the operators of charging points, EV fleets and other key players in the ecosystem. Welcome to new Patrons this week:   Executive Producer JAVIER CARMELO DÍAZ PÉREZ Producer CHRIS WALKONS Producer PAUL DENNEY   VOLVO WILL TRIPLE EV OUTPUT AT BELGIUM PLANT "Volvo Cars is boosting production of full-electric cars at its plant in Ghent, Belgium. The company is adding output of a second battery-powered car at the factory in addition to the full-electric XC40 Recharge compact SUV." says Automotive News Europe: "The new EV will use the same architecture as the XC40 Recharge. Volvo will provide more details on the model, which is expected to be called the C40, on March 2. Volvo plans to launch a new full-electric car every year until 2025, when it expects that half of its global sales will be battery-powered models. Volvo estimates output of full-electric cars at Ghent will triple from 2020 to 2022, at which time full-electric cars will account for about 60 percent of the plant's total production capacity."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/volvo-will-triple-ev-output-belgium-plant   FORD MUSTANG MACH-E HAS BETTER RESIDUAL VALUES THAN NAMESAKE PONY CAR "The Ford Mustang Mach-E isn't everyone's cup of tea, but at least it has a better residual value than the Mustang pony car, the vehicle it got its name from. That's a revelation that CarsDirect has discovered through Ford's first-quarter lease residual guide. According to the website, the electric crossover will have a higher residual value than its gasoline-powered counterpart." according to Motor1: "Mustang Mach-E will have at least 56 percent residual value for the Select Standard Range (RWD), Select Standard Range (AWD), and GT Extended Range (AWD) trims. It will, however, have a whopping 58 percent residual value after the lease term for the California Route 1 Extended Range (RWD), Premium Extended Range (RWD), Premium Extended Range (AWD), and First Edition Extended Range (AWD) variants."   https://www.motor1.com/news/481651/mustang-mach-e-residual-value   HYUNDAI WILL UNLEASH ITS ELECTRIC VELOSTER N RACE CAR AT DAYTONA "Next Friday, in the run up to the Daytona 24 weekend, Hyundai’s Veloster N ETCR racer will take to the track for some exciting demonstration laps. This will be the first time that anyone outside of Hyundai will get to experience the quick acceleration of Hyundai’s 670 horsepower electric machine based on its quirky three-door sporty hatch." says Jalopnik: "The Veloster N ETCR will be running in the 2021 Pure ETCR championship, though this display indicates to me that Hyundai and IMSA are potentially working on an electric class for the Pilot Challenge series, or even a standalone support series. Hyundai will compete in the inaugural Pure ETCR series against other electric touring cars from Alfa Romeo, Cupra, and MG."   https://jalopnik.com/hyundai-will-unleash-its-electric-veloster-n-race-car-a-1846113842   BP PULSE PARTNERS WITH JUMPTECH "BP Pulse has signed a new contract with Jumptech to help grow electric vehicle (EV) charger installations. BP Pulse, the O&G major's emobility division, will use Jumptech’s platform to streamline the installation of chargers by simplifying processes and improving information flows, it said." according to Current News: "Jumpech’s platform is designed to allow customers to easily supply information about their property and the desired installation for home charging applications, including imagery. This then gets sent to BP Pulse’s team of advisors, enabling them to process the application. The company is planning to expand its public charge point portfolio from 7,000 today to 16,000 by 2030. This will include 1,400 ultra-fast chargers."   https://www.current-news.co.uk/news/bp-pulse-partners-with-jumptech-as-it-looks-to-expand-charger-installations-beyond-100-000   EDF AND VOLKSWAGEN PARTNER ON E-MOBILITY IN FRANCE "EDF’s renewable energy offerings will be recommended to buyers of Volkswagen Group electric vehicles (EVs) in France. Under the agreement, buyers of EVs from any of the Volkswagen Group’s brands will be advised of EDF’s regional green electricity offerings either via the internet or through the sales networks." says Smart Energy: "The offer also supports the Volkswagen Group’s zero-emissions strategy for 2050. The Group intends to invest €33 billion ($39.9 billion) in e-mobility up to 2024 and plans up to 75 new EVs by 2029."   https://www.smart-energy.com/industry-sectors/electric-vehicles/edf-volkswagen-partner-on-e-mobility-in-france/   SIEMENS LAUNCHES 96% EFFICIENT SICHARGE D FAST CHARGER "Siemens introduces a new Sicharge D fast charger, marketing it as one of the most efficient DC charger on the market. The rated efficiency is 95.5%, but at peak, it's 96%. The Sicharge D is modular and upgradable, with several power outputs - 160 kW, 180 kW, 240 kW and 300 kW. The cool thing about it is the dynamic power allocation between the two DC outputs (plus an optional AC output)." reports InsideEVs: "The Sicharge D can handle voltage from 150 V up to 1,000 V, which makes the charger suitable for the 800 V (nominal) battery systems. The maximum current output is 1,000 A."   https://insideevs.com/news/467406/siemens-96-efficient-sicharge-d-fast-charger/       QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS   I asked: what was the moment you realised you wanted to drive electric.   RAJEEV NARAYAN For decades I have been interested in decarbonizing cars, and have been interested in Biofuels, hybrids, and eventually EVs as they started to become viable.  In 2017 Hurricane Harvey disrupted gasoline supplies here in San Antonio, and I finally pulled the trigger on buying an EV with a Chevy Bolt. A short time later I discovered your wonderful show! Since then we now have 2 EVs and charge them with solar.   tallman “When my Prius Prime gets to 0% and the engine starts. ☹️“   ROBERT BAXTER I first knew that I wanted to drive an EV in August 2012 when I test drove a Nissan Leaf. However, I did not buy the Nissan Leaf because it was going to be our new car and had to be able to handle our 400 mile round-trips that we made a couple times a month. Therefore I looked at the main two alternatives  (in the US) the Chevrolet Volt and the Prius Plugin hybrid. The Chevrolet volt was just a little bit too small. However I will say that I loved the car. We settled on the Prius plug-in. I have had the car now for 8 1/2 years and I'm averaging 91 miles per gallon. The car got 12 miles on a charge when I purchased it now over eight years later it gets about 9 miles on a charge.  The car has got 73,000 miles on it and not so much as a widget has been replaced. I do the routine maintenance at the dealership and that is all. My next car will be electric however, I'm kind of like you in that I am a value oriented individual and it's hard to get rid of a car that serves you well every day without so much as a hiccup and provides 90+ miles per gallon.   JONATHAN PRICE A: Within minutes of our first Zoe ZE40 test drive in early 2017. We bought a nearly new ZE40 soon afterwards, then another, and now we have a ZE50 on 2 year lease.   PHIL KEPP After taking a first drive in a LEAF. Also drove a MICRA, which was OK but not inspiring. What then remained was (a) getting wife's agreement (which proved surprisingly easy - once SHE had a quick drive) and (b) waiting for my choice of LEAF to arrive (some months).   DON MILLER, NORTH CAROLINA Back in the 60s a retired neighbor had an electric golf/mail cart and use to take me to little league practice. I remember how quite it was and what a blast it was as we zipped along. Never forgot about those trips and what I know now was the EV grin on my face.   KARL CRAMER I knew I wanted to drive an EV since I saw Ed Begley Jr. driving around in one in the ‘90s. Totally geeked out on the technology.   JUSTIN PAVLICK I knew I wanted to drive and encourage everyone else to drive an EV when I was on a run. I was running down Forbes Avenue in Pittsburgh in between classes, which just happened to be during rush hour traffic. Running along the road with all of the cars spewing garbage into the air that I was breathing. It made it very difficult to breathe without coughing. The final straw was when a diesel powered bus came by and bombarded me with its exhaust right in my face. That was the moment I realized how much better it would be if we electrified all of the vehicles on the road. That is when I decided to buy an EV and push for EV adoption in my area. I am now working for an electric utility and helping with our utility owned car charging stations and EV policies!   PAUL PELOWSKI For me, it was the first time I drove a Model S, in early 2019 or maybe it was 2018. I was raised around American muscle cars. The bigger, louder and stinkier the better. Then I drove the Model S. It wasn’t the strange, lame looking EV I’d seen before. Didn’t have ridiculous wheels, oh and it got up and took off like a rocket. Suddenly everything gas powered after that seemed antiquated. Now the only decision is which EV is right for us here in the States.   IAIN SEAR I've always been interested in EVs and green issues, probably from when I was at school in the early 90s I remember having lesson on Ozone damage, recycling and the environment and that stuck with me. The first time I got really interested in a real car was when I saw news reports on a Welsh EV prototype in the noughties. Nothing came of it but I kept an eye on EV development from that point. Then in 2013 I noticed a fancy black Tesla on the base I was working at and thought this is it, sadly I couldn't afford one until last month (well my partner afforded it), should have bought some tesla shares at that point and I could of retired!

He is a member of MWACA where he leads the Shop Owner Support Group (an amazing group of shops) in Iowa. He and his team focus on the customer experience, as well as Hybrid, Electric and emerging vehicle technologies. He recently added a solar array to his building and uses a Toyota Prius and Chevrolet Volt as shuttle vehicles and plans to add more hybrid and electric vehicles as they continually update their loaner fleet. He is a member of RLO Training’s Bottom Line Impact Group for 4 years. Listen to Keith’s previous episodes  (https://remarkableresults.biz/town-hall-academy/a146/?s=%22Keith+Williamson%22) . John Long started to gain more interest in vehicles and just after his 21stbirthday he accepted a position working at National Tire & Battery as a service advisor. He knew nothing about tires or vehicle systems and how they worked, but he learned as much as he could. In 2005, John and his wife decided it was time for a move. He arrived in San Antonio late on a Friday night after driving 24 hours straight and interviewed with Mark Roberts on Saturday morning. Mark hired John, and for the next several years he helped grow the new mechanical repair shop business. Listen to John’s previous episodes  (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=%22John+Long%22) . Tyler Hubbard is the owner, I-70 Auto Service, Kansas City, MO. Listen to Tyler’s previous episodes (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=%22Tyler+Hubbard%22) . Key Talking Points: One of the best ways to grow your technicians is to pay for their training Consider incentives for the number of hours. See this episode with Bill Hill: FTR 075: Bill Hill – Yearly Bonus is All About a Commitment to Training (https://remarkableresults.biz/captivate-podcast/f075/) Promote to your customer that you are closed for trainingLet them know of your commitment to stay on the cutting edge Use your invoices, signs and social media to promote your training commitment The best networking happens at the breaks and in social events during any conference, especially at Vision When back at work hold lunch and learns and share what each other learned and what resources are available. When you teach you learn Hold deep discussions on what each learned. Do this over a few weeks so you can spend some quality time on each lesson Team bonding is at an all-time high when you bring your team to a training conference. Some techs will leave shops when they will not pay for their training Be sure that your techs all go to different classes Lunch and learn where your techs share new ideas that they discovered or learned. Make this a part of your meetings How do we test if the training worked You need to want to see your people be successful Track comebacks to find weaknesses in training Training saves your tech time. Time is money If you are going to provide the best customer service, not training your techs hurts that commitment You gain a competitive advantage with your commitment to training You need to fix yourself and then you’ll find better ways to build a better business Investment in training as a percent of sales needs to be budgeted John Long spent $90,000 on training. It was 3% of his business Techs want to be trained. If they don’t it is time for them to find another shop Every position in the company needs to be trained: CEO, Service Advisor, Technicians and back office Hire a business coach to help you run a better business and hold you accountable Training hours per year required and reviewed each quarter. Many owners pay an incentive to hit their training goals Careful. Not all training is good training. Don’t stop training if you have a bad experience, but learn about trainers, venues and content

Show #647   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 20th November 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   AUDI REVEALS ITS SECOND ELECTRIC CAR, THE E-TRON SPORTBACK  The Verge reports: "Audi just pulled the wraps off of the E-Tron Sportback, the company’s second electric car, at the 2019 LA Auto Show. Coming to Europe in the first half of 2020, the top-tier version of the new premium EV will offer up to 446 kilometers of range (277 miles) and is powered by dual electric motors with a total power output of 265kW, or around 350 horsepower. A slightly less powerful version of the Sportback with a smaller battery will start at €71,350 (around $79,000)."   https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/19/20973020/audi-e-tron-sportback-sedan-la-auto-show-2019   According to TechCrunch: "Audi has delivered 18,500 of its all-electric e-tron SUVs globally since March 2019 when the vehicle first came to market. Audi plans to offer two variants of the vehicle, a Sportback 50 and Sportback 55. The Sportback will come to Europe first in spring 2020. The Sportback 55 will come to the U.S. in fall 2020. The 2020 Audi e-tron Sportback has a 86.4 kilowatt-hour battery pack that has a range of up to 446 kilometers (277.1 miles) in the EU’s WLTP cycle. The EPA estimates aren’t out yet, but expect the range numbers to be slightly lower. The company is targeting an EPA range of about 220 miles over the 204 miles of range that the regular e-tron gets."   https://techcrunch.com/2019/11/19/audis-next-all-electric-vehicle-the-e-tron-sportback-is-a-coupe-suv/   2019 AUDI E-TRON RECEIVES A 5-STAR US NCAP RATING The 2019 Audi e-tron, the first fully-electric Audi model, has earned the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration New Car Assessment Program’s maximum overall safety rating of five stars in its latest series of tests. Additionally, standard automatic emergency braking is offered as part of Audi pre sense® front. Using a front-mounted camera, the e-tron can help initiate braking at speeds of up to 52 mph for detected pedestrians and bicyclists in front of the vehicle and can bring a vehicle to a full stop when traveling at speeds under 35 mph based on IIHS tests.   GOOGLE MAPS 10.30 PREPARES TO LET YOU PAY FOR EV CHARGING AND FIND COMPATIBLE PLUGS "Google Maps 10.30 for Android has added strings that suggest it will support making payments straight from the app." says XDA Developers: "These features are not yet live in the Google Maps app for Android. We’ll probably see an announcement from Google in a few days or weeks, though. The last time Google Maps was updated with a new EV-related feature was back in April when they added real-time availability of charging ports. With new electric vehicles on the way, the Maps app is long overdue for new functionality."   https://www.xda-developers.com/google-maps-10-30-electric-vehicle-charging-payments-compatible-plugs/   2021 TOYOTA RAV4 PRIME HAS 302 HP "The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid was introduced here at the L.A. Auto Show, and although it doesn't have much in the way of visual differentiation, its spec sheets pops with eye-opening stat after another." reports AutoBlog; "It produces a total system output of 302 horsepower, making it the most powerful compact SUV from a non-luxury brand. Toyota says it'll also go from 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds. As for eco credentials, the RAV4 Prime can go an estimated 39 miles on its battery alone, which is better than any current plug-in hybrid SUV and behind only the Polestar 1, Chevrolet Volt (soon-to-be-discontinued) and Honda Clarity. Even the Toyota Prius Prime manages only 25 miles."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/11/20/2021-toyota-rav4-prime-revealed   TESLA ‘HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH ‘SUPERCHARGER FIRE,’ SAYS LOCAL FIRE OFFICIAL "A fire was reported to have been caused by a Tesla Supercharger at a Wawa store in New Jersey last weekend, but a local fire official now says Tesla had nothing to do with the cause of the fire." says electrek: "The next day, a Wawa spokesperson told CNBC that the issue was with the Supercharger station. But now we learn that Tesla had actually nothing to do with the fire. Matthew Palmeiri, who works for Parsippany-Troy Hills Fire Department District 5, told Automotive News that Jersey Central Power & Light had a problem with a transformer next to the Tesla Supercharger"   https://electrek.co/2019/11/19/tesla-had-nothing-to-do-with-supercharger-fire-says-local-fire-official/   KARMA REVERO GTS DEBUTS WITH MORE RANGE " the GTS knocks over a half-second off the sprint to 60 mph. The Revero GTS requires just 3.9 seconds for the trip, and with the accelerator firmly pinned it will keep pulling to an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph." writes Motor1.com: " The Revero GTS can travel 380 miles when using its range-extending BMW-sourced three-cylinder engine to generate electricity. Fully charged, its upgraded battery pack can power the Revero 80 miles without the engine kicking in. Throughout all this, total output is actually the same 536 horsepower that you’ll find on the Revero GT, which makes the performance enhancements on the GTS even more impressive."   https://www.motor1.com/news/383268/karma-revero-gts-debuts/   PORSCHE TAYCAN CARB CERTIFICATION REVEALS UP TO 282 MILES OF RANGE And staying with Motor1: "An eagle-eyed TaycanEVForum.com member posted a copy of the Porsche Taycan’s CARB (California AirResource Board) certificate that hints at the EV sedan’s real-world electric range. The document reveals the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S returning 281.8 and 282.7 miles, respectively. However, this isn’t the first time CARB’s number exceeded estimates. The board certified the Jaguar I-Pace with 334 miles of range, which far exceeds the 234-mile range given by the U.S. EPA. There’s a significant chance that when the EPA tests the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S, its numbers could be closer to our estimates or even lower, possibly hovering around 200 miles."   https://www.motor1.com/news/383241/porsche-taycan-range-estimate-carb/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   "If you were marketing a for an new EV brand (or Tesla) how would you do it?”   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 251 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. What happens when you put two energy experts in a room and ask them all about electric cars? This week we're going through the many different kinds of electric vehicles, with all of their pros and cons. From Tesla to Toyota, from hybrids to hydrogen cells, we take you through everything you need to know about electric vehicles; how they work, and which type is right for you. Watch it on YouTube! ----more---- WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ELECTRIC VEHICLE? Battery Electric Cars (BEV) The pure electric car, with rechargeable batteries and no gas engine. Some examples are the Nissan leaf, and Tesla X. “Standard” Hybrid Electric Cars (HEV) Composed of two engines - a conventional combustion engine with an electric propulsion system. These kinds of hybrids don't plug in, the electric component comes from regenerative braking. Examples include the Toyota Prius Hybrid and the Honda Civic Hybrid. Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) PHEVs are hybrids that can recharge the battery through both regenerative braking and plugging into an external source of electrical power. The Chevy Volt and Fiat 500e are both PHEV's. Extended Range Electric Cars (E-REV) Very similar to PHEVs, but rather than using both engine types to power the vehicle, E-REVs rely exclusively on the electric propulsion system. The electric motor always drives the wheels, with the internal combustion engine acting as a generator to recharge the battery when it is depleted. Examples of E-REVs include the Vauxhall Ampera and Chevrolet Volt. Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) Completely different to all the cars above, but definitely worth discussing. FCEVs are powered by an electric motor, which is charged-up by combining hydrogen and oxygen to create a chemical reaction. There are only 3 available on the UK market, and they are the Hyundai's ix35, the Toyota Mirai and the Honda FCV Clarity.     Read more: Choosing the Right Type of Electric Car Electric car FAQs A Beginners Guide to Fuel Cells 5 Reasons to Install an EV Home Charging Point   Low-emission vehicles eligible for a plug-in grant Electric vehicle charging grants

Show #478   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 21st May 2019. TESLA CUTS BASE PRICE OF NEW MODEL S AND MODEL X VEHICLES "Tesla significantly reduced the base price today of its newly upgraded Model S and Model X vehicles that launched just a month ago. With the changes, Tesla also brought back a ‘Standard Range’ option for both vehicles – an option that has been on and off the configurator over the past year. For Model S, it started at $78,000 and it offers a range of 285 miles on a single charge and for Model X, it starts at $83,000 and the range is 250 miles. Now just a few weeks later, Tesla updated its online configurator to reduce the price of each model by $3,000 and $2,000 respectively" writes Fred Lambert for Electrek.   Tesla came back with a statement and by the sound of it, I don't think they would have put it as first item on today's podcast! Tesla said: “Like other car companies, we periodically adjust pricing and available options. These pricing changes represent a reduction of about 2% to 3% in Model X and S prices. Last week, we raised US Model 3 prices by 1%. By any reasonable standard, these small changes are not newsworthy.”   A comment from Guy Hall: "Two buyers getting the same price on car from dealerships is about as likely as paying the same price for your airline ticket as the person sitting next to you. Price adjustments from dealerships and manufacturers are frequently going on behind the curtain. At least Tesla's changes are transparent and in the open. I would take transparency over arguing with the dealership hoping I get a fair price. You could argue that the transparent pricing could affect your resale value, though keep in mind it could go either way."   https://electrek.co/2019/05/21/tesla-price-model-s-x-changes/   AUDI Q5 55 TFSI E QUATTRO DEBUTS WITH PLUG-IN HYBRID POWERTRAIN "Following the launch of the E-Tron Quattro and the China-only Q2 L E-Tron, another Audi is getting an electric motor. Unlike the other two, the new Q5 TFSI E Quattro (not the best name, right?) retains the combustion engine to form a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine that develops 248 horsepower (185 kilowatts) and 273 pound-feet (370 Newton-meters) of torque with an electric motor rated at a peak output of 141 hp (105 kW) and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm)." reports Motor1.com: "Audi says the plug-in hybrid setup enables the midsize luxury SUV to offer a combined output of 362 hp (270 kW) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm). The electrified muscle grants the Q5 with a sprint to 62 mph (100 kph) in only 5.3 seconds and a top speed of 149 mph (239 kph), which isn’t half bad given the vehicle’s size and the relatively small four-cylinder engine. That zero-emissions range is guaranteed by a lithium-ion battery pack with a 14.1-kWh capacity stored underneath the trunk’s floor. It takes only two and a half hours to fully charge the batteries through a 400 V/16 outlet while from a household socket it needs approximately six hours."   https://www.motor1.com/news/350614/audi-q5-tfsi-e-quattro/   SHELL LAUNCHES E-FLUIDS TO OPTIMISE ELECTRIC VEHICLE PERFORMANCE Shell has launched a new range of fluids specifically designed to work in battery electric vehicles (EVs). These E-Transmission Fluids, E-Thermal Fluids and E-Greases will make battery EVs perform better and be more efficient. This is part of Shell’s ongoing drive to support electric mobility and offer more and cleaner energy solutions for our customers. Shell is continuing to explore how to serve the world’s increasing number of EV drivers, both on our forecourts and beyond. Shell has been working closely with automotive and component manufacturers to engineer these “first fill” fluids that effectively and efficiently meet a broad range of battery EV performance requirements. These products are targeted at the growing number of automotive manufacturers who are building EVs. E-Fluids will help battery EVs reduce their lifecycle emissions and extend their lifespans due to their ultra-low viscosity properties which increase vehicles efficiency, and outstanding ageing properties which exceeds conventional oils. Shell has also produced a range of fluids, Shell Helix Hybrid, which are designed to work specifically with hybrid vehicles.   https://www.shell.com/business-customers/lubricants-for-business/news-and-media-releases/2019/shell-e-fluid-to-optimise-electric-vehicle-performance.html   HONDA'S ADORABLE ELECTRIC CAR IS OFFICIALLY ON SALE "It’s been a long time in the making, but reservations are finally open for the Honda e – the Japanese brand’s cutesy little urban EV – and we couldn’t be more excited. We were first introduced to Honda’s baby back in 2017 when it was shown to the world as the Urban EV Concept, and like first-time parents we instantly fell in love. That was a tough act to follow, but when we saw it for the second time as the E Prototype in Geneva this year we were not disappointed. " writes Greg Potts for TopGear: "Honda had 24,000 expressions of interest after that unveiling – around 6,000 of which came from the UK.vNow known as simply the Honda e, there’s still no word on a final price, but expect to pay between £25k and £30k for a range of 125 miles, rear-wheel drive and the ability to fast charge to 80% battery capacity in 30 minutes. This is very much designed to be a city-dwelling run-around."   Honda said "We are delighted to be offering a reservation option to our customers in select European markets for the first time with the Honda e. The Honda e in prototype form has received an overwhelming response and with over 25,000 registrations of interest across Europe, customers now have the opportunity to secure priority status to order the model"   https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/hondas-adorable-electric-car-officially-sale   BYD DELIVERS ELECTRIC BUSES TO JAPAN "China's new energy vehicle manufacturer BYD has delivered its electric buses to Japan's Oze National Park, the Shenzhen-headquartered company said Monday." reports China.org.cn: "The J6 model of the bus, specifically designed for Japan and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, has a compact body to enhance accessibility on Japan's narrow streets and a low floor designed to cater to the aged society of Japan. It was the fourth time that BYD has delivered electric buses to Japan, the company said, noting that at present, one in every three electric buses in Japan's public transport market is provided by BYD. As of March 2019, BYD has a global reach boasting sales of over 50,000 electric buses in more than 50 countries and regions, as well as 17,000 units sold domestically."   http://www.china.org.cn/business/2019-05/21/content_74805404.htm   EFACEC LAUNCHES 2ND GENERATION FAST CHARGER FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES Efacec has just given a new step in the electric mobility field with the development a new fast charger for electric vehicles, called QC45 Generation 2. This charging station is the 2nd generation of the company’s fast charger bestseller, with significant improvements in software and hardware domains. The official presentation of this product will take place on May 21st in Lyon, France, at the EVS32 Fair. With close to 4.000 fast charging equipment spread across five continents, mostly on the European and American continents, Efacec invests in the continuous evolution of its products to meet the current and future needs of the user of EV. But with DC power up to 50 kW, is that future proof?   CHEVY VOLT MARKETING CONFUSION: EXPLAINING PHEVS IS HARD "Automakers have had difficulty explaining the unique benefits of owning a plug-in hybrid. The Volt very quickly became the best selling plug-in vehicle in the United States. It held this title until it was finally de-throned by the Model 3." reports InsideEVs: "According to Autotrader’s Michael Harley, Chevy marketers were never able to properly educate consumers. “Overall, marketing and advertising for the Volt needed to focus on education as much as it did traditional selling. (...) A lack of a proper customer perception played a very large role in the demise of the Chevrolet Volt." Chevrolet marketing director of cars and crossovers, Steve Majoros, says GM focused too much on the technical aspects instead of showing the “promise of what Volt delivered.” That being a cleaner, more environmentally friendly driving experience."   https://insideevs.com/news/350574/chevy-volt-confusion-phev-consumers-videos/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #445   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 16th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   ANDERS HOVE – PATREON EXECUTIVE PRODUCER: “I was listening this morning to your guesses about the pronunciation of AI.ME. Since the concept was released at the Shanghai auto show, and could be intended for China, this is probably a play on words, since "ai" is the verb "to love." It'S pronounced the same as "aye" in "aye aye, captain." So "aye ... me.".   Reasons to have Sentry Mode: An email from Brian Thompson. “Willie Singletary, Council Candidate Hits Tesla Model 3 with Escalade and leaves scene.”   AUTO SHANGHAI 2019: THE ELECTRIC VEHICLES TO LOOK FORWARD TO "it's no surprise that the Auto Shanghai 2019, which begins on April 16, will have more EVs and EV concepts on display than you can point a finger at. Here's some of the ones that we think will stand out." says Overdrive.in. Their picks are: Possibly of most interest to us is the production version of the Renault K-ZE. As the looks suggest, this will be the electric version of the Renault Kwid. It will be based on a heavily modified version of the Kwid's CMF-A platform and will have a 250 km range. The Buick Velite 6 is a heavily revised version of the second generation Chevrolet Volt. The PHEV version debut first and be powered by the same 1.5 litre petrol motor and 18.4 kWh battery pack. The full EV version is expected to have a 85 kW motor with a claimed range of 291 km." They also rate the NIO EP7 performance sedan, the Audi Q2 etron which is like an electric A2 for China only, the Aston Martin Rapide E and the Geely GE 11 - "the first global model from Geely's newly-created EV brand "Geely New Energy". Internationally it will be available under the Geometry brand. "   http://overdrive.in/news-cars-auto/auto-shanghai-2019-the-electric-vehicles-to-look-forward-to/   RENAULT KWID EV (CITY K-ZE) REVEALED AT SHANGHAI MOTOR SHOW "Renault has showcased the production version of the Kwid EV at the 2019 Shanghai Motor Show. The EV is based on the same CMF-A platform as the Kwid, albeit with a few modifications to accommodate batteries and an electric motor. However the specifications of the same haven't been revealed yet." reports ZigWheels: "while it has not been officially revealed, the City K-ZE will have an approximate range close to 250Km. Inside, the cabin remains largely similar to the Kwid with a functional setup. Key highlights include an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system which also gets online navigation, real time monitoring for EV features, 4G WiFi and voice recognition. the Renault City K-ZE packs PM2.5 sensors and an air quality control system, which evaluates cabin air quality and switches between interior and exterior air circulation automatically. It also gets features like a rear camera and a tyre pressure monitoring system."   https://www.zigwheels.com/news-features/news/renault-kwid-ev-city-kze-revealed-at-shanghai-motor-show/33576/   NEW NIO ET PREVIEW ELECTRIC CAR REVEALED IN SHANGHAI "At the Auto Shanghai 2019, Chinese EV startup NIO showed off its all new sedan product lineup with the ET Preview and exhibited its entire NIO Power service solution as well as some cutting-edge technologies such as the 220kW permanent magnet synchronous motor electric drivetrain." reports Gasgoo for InsideEVs.com "The EV maker also showcased such products as the high-performance electric flagship ES8 SUV; the high-performance long-range, intelligent electric ES6 SUV; the ultrafast electric car, the EP9; the NIO EVE Vision car and NIO Formula E Team car, the NIO 004."   https://insideevs.com/new-nio-et-preview-electric-car-revealed/   KARMA DEBUTS BEAUTIFUL PININFARINA DESIGNED ELECTRIC COUPE "Aside from the Karma Revero GT (yes, it’s an updated variant of the Fisker Karma from 2016) which is a production vehicle going on sale soon, Karma Automotive has an interesting two-door concept debuting at the 2019 Auto Shanghai. The so-called Pininfarina GT is based on the Revero GT and, as its name suggests, has been designed by Pininfarina." according to Anthony Karr from Motor1.com: "The official press release says this is the “first result of a partnership with Pininfarina, the iconic Italian design and engineering house,” which hints at potential future products developed in cooperation between the two companies. While the coupe has the exterior dimensions of the Revero GT, the overall appearance is sportier thanks to the shorter rear overhang and the long hood. We believe the two-door vehicle has the same powertrain as the Revero GT, which means there’s a BMW-sourced 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo engine, an onboard electric generator, and two electric motors for a combined output of 535 horsepower (399 kilowatts) and 550 pound-feet (746 lb-ft) of torque."   https://insideevs.com/karma-debuts-pininfarina-electric-coupe/   ELECTRA MECCANICA SHIPS SOLO FROM CHINA TO NORTH AMERICA "Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker, Electra Meccanica Vehicle, has signed a contract with Crane Worldwide Logistics to move its single-passenger, three-wheel Solo model from its assembly plant in Chongqing to the ports of Los Angeles in the US and Vancouver, Canada." according to the website Automotive Logistics: "Electra Meccanica is currently ramping up mass production of its Solo electric vehicle at its Chongqing manufacturing facility in China for delivery to customers there and abroad in 2019. According to official figures from the EV maker it has 64,000 pre-orders on its books."   https://automotivelogistics.media/news/157291   HYUNDAI & H2E: 1,600 FUEL CELL TRUCKS FOR EUROPE "Hyundai and the Swiss company H2 Energy (H2E) have confirmed their commitment to establishing a joint venture called Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility. The JV’s first goal is to open up the European hydrogen mobility ecosystem with fuel cell trucks." writes Carrie Hamel for electrive.com: "Hyundai will supply a total of 1,600 fuel cell-powered heavy trucks to Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility from 2019 to 2025 – 600 more than originally announced in a memorandum of understanding signed in 2018 between H2E and Hyundai. The Swiss company H2E specialises in the production and supply of renewable hydrogen in Switzerland with subsidiaries in Germany, Norway and Austria and they will be responsible for marketing the fleet."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/04/15/hyundai-h2e-1600-fuel-cell-trucks-for-european-market/   MINI SURVEY CLAIMS CUSTOMERS ARE HAPPY WITH 75 MILES OF EV RANGE "In this survey from MINI USA, the brand asked 1,004 adults over the age of 18 (502 men and 502 women) a series of questions to determine what a necessary average range. While the questions asked were not disclosed to us, the brand claims that a resulting average range of 75 miles was deemed “sufficient”." says BMW blog: "MINI also learned from this survey that the majority of customers find EVs to be best used in city driving or for commuting. The latter of which is assuming it’s a relatively short commute. This information is likely to factor into the size of battery packs used in upcoming EV MINIs. The first one to come is the upcoming MINI E, which is said to use the same 42.2 kWh battery pack as the BMW i3 and get around 120 miles of range."   https://www.bmwblog.com/2019/04/15/mini-survey-claims-customers-are-happy-with-75-miles-of-ev-range/   TESLA'S CONSTANT PRICE CHANGES FRUSTRATE BUYERS "Last week, Tesla changed the prices on their cars again. In just the last few months there have been a huge number of price changes, particularly on the Model 3" says a Forbes article which goes on to track every price change since, a 12 point list which follows the changing face of Autopilot and the $35,000 Model 3 which came and (partially) went. It's a toughtful article by Brad Templeton and talks about buyers remorse, how cellphones have been commodotised. "Elon Musk has had a few things to say about this. First, he points out that prices on other maker's cars fluctuate all the time due to specials, dealer rebates, and plain old negotiation. He says Tesla is just doing it transparently and should not be blamed for doing the right thing. There is some merit to this, but the fact that somebody can get $3,000 off a car by negotiating at the dealer does not affect the price of existing cars nearly as much. He also points out that Teslas, unlike other cars before them, keep getting new features with software updates, which are given to all owners whose cars can handle them."   https://www.forbes.com/sites/bradtempleton/2019/04/15/teslas-constant-price-changes-frustrate-buyers-even-more-is-likely-as-cars-become-computers/#6bba873e5da9   TOYOTA SELLS ELECTRIC CAR TECHNOLOGY TO CHINESE STARTUP IN RETURN FOR GREEN CAR CREDITS "Toyota has agreed to sell its electric car technology to Chinese startup Singulato, in a move which will give it preferential rights to buy green credits under China’s new quota system for electric vehicles (EVs)." according to City AM newspaper: "The green car credit system, introduced in January, requires a significant portion of car makers’ production or imports in China must be electric or hybrid. Those that do not meet the quota themselves can purchase credits from rivals that exceed it, but if they do not have enough credits they face government fines for their operations in China. Singulato is developing a mini EV which it hopes to release later this year. This will generate credits for the startup, some of which Toyota will then purchase. Toyota has already said that initially it won’t be able to meet its quotas without buying credits from others."   http://www.cityam.com/276295/toyota-sells-electric-car-technology-chinese-startup-return   CHEVY BOLT EUV NAME TRADEMARKED, ELECTRIC CROSSOVER COMING? "An interesting patent filing by General Motors hints the upcoming second electric vehicle from the automaker could be a high-riding machine. First unearthed by GM Authority, the Bolt EUV moniker has been trademarked by GM earlier this month and will be used for “motor land vehicles, namely, automobiles.” says Motor1.com today: "As GM Authority reports, the name is probably going to be used for Chevrolet’s next Bolt-based EV. In March this year, the American manufacturer confirmed it will build the all-electric car at its Orion facility where the Bolt is currently produced. A new $300-million investment in the factory was also confirmed and a plan for approximately 400 new jobs at the site."   https://www.motor1.com/news/344658/chevrolet-bolt-euv-trademark-rumors/   WHY TESLA DEFINES AMERICAN LUXURY, NOT CADILLAC OR LINCOLN "Americans are at our best when we look forward instead of at what others are doing. Cadillac and Lincoln used to epitomize this idea." says MotorTrend: "While Cadillac has spent the past three decades copying BMW's homework, and Lincoln spent the same time building cost-cut, rebadged Fords and Mercurys, the soul of American luxury escaped Detroit. Today, it has settled in sunny California. Tesla's tech and engineering is class leading, and delivers benchmark EV performance and range. And the vehicles are (relatively) expensive, requiring early adopters to be of a certain socio-economic status. They have become part of the fabric of today's luxury consumer society, a car many buyers of mainstream automobiles now aspire to own because of what it would say about their own status. Tesla is therefore a genuine modern luxury brand."   https://www.motortrend.com/news/why-tesla-defines-american-luxury-not-cadillac-lincoln/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. The death of the Chevrolet Volt was a quiet one. It came in early December amid news that General Motors was cutting 14,000 jobs, closing three assembly plants, and also ending production of the Chevy Cruze and Impala, the Buick LaCrosse, and the Cadillac CT6. It made sense: Sales have been slowing, Americans aren't buying compact cars or sedans anymore, and GM is repositioning itself for a future that includes both bigger vehicles and many more electrics.

GM's Monday Massacre And The Closing Of Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly

Daily Detroit

General Motors dropped a bomb on Monday, saying it will likely close three assembly plants including Detroit-Hamtramck in a pre-emptive move to cut costs and headcount ahead of an expected downturn. The moves mean the elimination of as many as 14,000 jobs — including 1,500 at Detroit-Hamtramck — and the elimination of slow-selling sedans like the Chevrolet Volt and Impala and the Buick LaCrosse. A transmission plant in Warren could also close. It's a particularly dubious cap to the saga of the Poletown plant, which rose during the 1980s after the two cities it straddles worked with GM to condemn and raze a working-class neighborhood of the same name. On today's episode, we speak with Hamtramck Mayor Karen Majewski, who tells us the closure leaves a city defined by the auto industry without any actual auto manufacturing. It also leaves Detroit without an open auto-assembly plant. In fact, here's Mayor Mike Duggan statement about it: "This morning I spoke to Mary Barra and she advised me for the first time of the situation at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant. The news is troubling. I have spoken to UAW President Gary Jones and the city's economic development team. They are working together to come up with a solution that works for GM and the employees. We all know there is strong demand for manufacturing space in Detroit and we are willing to work with GM to fill all the available manufacturing space at Poletown with either GM-related entities or other companies." You can also read the UAW's statement here. We also speak with auto analyst Michelle Krebs of Autotrader to learn about the business rationale behind the move. And finally, tech guru Nuri Gocay joins us to shed some light on where General Motors is actually adding jobs (hint: It ain't in Detroit). Growing up John was not interested in vehicles even though his father had always fixed their cars.  John’s passion was sports especially hockey.  John played anything and everything growing up.  He is still a huge sports fan and sports numbers junkie. In his late teens, John started to gain more interest in vehicles and just after his 21stbirthday he accepted a position working at National Tire & Battery as a service advisor. O/E aftermarket parts from OE suppliers If a part fails they go to their supplier for support. The good relationship with your supplier supports a new product and the possibility of labor. Communicate with your supplier if you find a rash of bad units. Supplier relationships are key Visit with his sales rep for John Long is not that important Will have lunch monthly with his supplier owner Keith Katz wants to see his first call supplier on a weekly basis. That is where he builds his relationship. He likes to see new products Keith Williamson wants to see training. Been on a cruise with his supplier owner Beating them up for price may get you out of favor with a supplier This panel likes to see improvements happen from suggestions offered. Service. What is good service? Having the part there when you need it. What is the expectation: Keith Williamson is getting a part in 18-20 minutes He doesn’t need it rush all the time. We’ll tell them if we have time. Keith Katz If they don’t put on the e-comm ticket their time frame his supplier will call them to ask their time frame. Lauren Giver started in the industry in July 2016 when she went to work for the repair shop that had been maintaining her vehicle for two years. She was hired as the Office Manager, but a big part of her job was talking to customers on the phone and at the counter. Lauren quickly found that this was the favorite part of her job, and truly why she wanted to work there in the first place. She had never received that level of customer service or felt valued as a customer at any other repair shop and she was excited to provide that experience from the other side of the counter. After the shop manager challenged her to make a sale, when she had absolutely no technical or sales experience, she sold the job and found that she enjoyed writing service just as much. It allowed Lauren to help people, which is what she wanted to do. After nine months, she was informed that the owners were retiring and selling the building, but through the connections that she made, Lauren found a wonderful home at Los Gatos Auto Service in Campbell, California where she currently writes service, full-time. Talking Points: We do not like hearing ourselves on a recording. That is human nature. A great way to instill a proper greeting is to have a smile ‘on’. It reflects in your voice. If you have a standard script, this ensures that your consistent phone techniques are solid. Because you are paying attention to the proper phone technique it is a big accountability factor. Listening to other people’s call is easier than listening to your own. Sometimes you need to listen to a bad call, but there is always a silver lining; a learning opportunity. Service advisers need quality training and the recorded phone call is a key to that training. If your shop does not record calls,  an option to find out your strengths and opportunities is to have your shop ‘secret shopped’. Learn to speak to a customer at their pace and level of understanding. Save good calls and go over what a good call sounds like. When you...

Monday 5th March 2018.  Coming up on the show today, Europe is flush with ultra fast chargers and Nissan win with range extenders, but first: ELECTRIC HYPERCARS THE FINAL FRONTIER On the podcast recently we were talking about supercar maker Koenigsegg and how the founder of the company was thinking about how to electrify their cars, following his experience of how impressive the instant torque of an electric motor is. And now, maker of the exotic cars like Zonda, supercar maker Pagani is getting involved, or perhaps I should say hypercar maker, as that’s what we seem to be up to now. They have a separate team of EV specialists working in their first electric car, however don’t start saving just yet, it’s due 2025. This was revealed in an interview with Argentinian TV channel El Tres, when Horacio Pagani talked about their forthcoming electric car. Of course their competitors like Rimac and McLaren are well ahead if Pagani are 7 years away. He also gave his opinion of autonomous driving and said it will never be part of a Pagani as his cars were built to be driven. With makers like Pagani moving electric there’s really no other segment left standing, or hanging onto combustion engines, everyone is investing in the electrified transport. https://carbuzz.com/news/pagani-planning-to-launch-fully-electric-hypercar-by-2025   KEEP ON RUNNING The Global Times is reporting that China's First solar-powered super highway is expected to have EVs running on it within the next 4 years. It's a six-lane motorway or highway which will be made from solar panels that charge electric vehicles as they pass over it. Immediate thoughts turn to autonomous driving and ride sharing, both sectors getting huge investment in China, as it would rule out having to plug in a car which doesn't have a driver. The road will be a smart expressway which they say will use an adaptive road environment for automatic driving which should reduce damage from traffic accidents. China's first solar motorway was opened for testing in December 2017, however at only 1km long it's only being used as a test case. One of the early teething issues with the solar road was vandalism as people stole bits of it just days after it opened. https://sputniknews.com/amp/science/201803031062199376-china-solar-highway-2022/   MAZDAS WANKEL FUTURE For the purposes of this podcast let's call Mazda's legendary high revving engine the rotary engine, although if we're being historically correct, it's the Wankel Rotary engine. Last seen in a Mazda RX-8 in 2012, it's coming back thanks to electric cars. Mazda’s Vice President of Sales and Customer Service for Europe, Martijn ten Brink, confirmed the rotary’s return but said that it would be a single-disc engine that will be tasked with being a generator, or range extender. It is said to be “as big as a shoe box” and, just like the batteries in EVs, will be down low. One of the benefits of the rotary engine is the lack of vibrations so it will suit an EV. Mazda's new electric car and rotary generator are all part of Mazda’s new Zoom-Zoom 2030 plan. The rotary engine will be optional as a range extender and is being offered only to ease customer concern over range. Brink says the range extender isn’t necessary “because the average buyer travels an average of 37 miles (60 kilometres) per day from home to work and back again.” So just like Toyota who have committed to a combustion engine future, fellow Japanese Mazda see a long future for burning fossil fuels. https://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-news/mazda-confirms-the-rotary-engine-s-return-but-it-doesn-t-mean-what-you-think-ar180154.html   NISSAN’S E-POWER SOLUTION And coincidentally on the subject of range-extender systems Nissan have their e-Power system, introduced last week in their people carriers for the Japanese market, after first being seen in the Note in 2016. Nissan's global chief planning officer, Philippe Klein, told Automotive News that e-Power will be coming to the USA as an optional extra. The Infiniti premium cars will also have e-Power soon. The e-Power combines engine, inverter and electric motor all together. Nissan's e-Power is similar to the Chevrolet Volt. It's a small combustion engine which works as a generator that charges a lithium ion battery. The battery then powers an electric motor, which directly turns the wheels. Unlike the Volt, however, the Nissan e-Power systems at the moment can't be plugged in. The Serena can travel 1.7 miles in Electric mode only, and although you're still burning fossil fuels, it means the engine can operate at it's most efficient range. The 1.7kWh battery is not a patch on the LEAF 40-kWh power pack and 110-kilowatt motor, but it's also far cheaper. 65 percent of all Note buyers are opting for the e-Power package according to Nissan. http://www.autonews.com/article/20180304/OEM06/180309763/nissan-epower-van-hybrid   BYD BATTERY PLANS One of China's leading EV makers BYD has plans not only for the cars, but also for batteries and the associated energy storage solutions. At the Battery Japan 2018, BYD Battery Group’s managing director of Overseas Sales Division, Tom Zhao, said: “We are pouring billions into creating the cleanest possible product because it’s essential for us to live and breathe better,” Last year in BYD sold around 130,000 units of new energy vehicles, ranking number one in global new energy vehicle sales for the third consecutive year. Their battery plans include second life applications in storage, but BYD also want to take a lead in decommissioning used EV batteries in automated factories and using the parts. https://auto.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/auto-components/byd-releases-plans-for-rechargeable-batteries/63144814   Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it.   Sunday 4th March 2018. FEBRUARY EV SALES For February sales there are a couple of models people will look at first. The Model 3 should be on a steep production curve heading upwards, and the new Nissan LEAF should start to see sales picking up as deliveries happen. According to InsideEVs the Kia Niro PHEV and Hyundai IONIQ report their first full month of sales, as we’re still waiting on those. Starting with the newest entrant and the LEAF sold 895 cars in February, and that’s with a constrained supply with most of those already spoken for. More cars should be arriving at dealers soon, although it’s currently 6th in the charts for February. March should see a sharp increase, but it has been noted that even those who wanted to get one early doors couldn’t get anything earlier than late Feb, early March delivery. The Chevvy Bolt is up almost 50% from this time last year, last month at 1,477, although it wasn’t on sale nationwide until half way through the year. The popular Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which does very well in the UK, struggles to get over 300. The Toyota Prius Prime, or the Prius Plug-In as it’s called here in the UK, sold over 2,000 in North America, also up 50% on this time in 2017. As always with Tesla they don’t provide monthly numbers so it’s a best guess. So the Top 10 in order: Tesla Model 3, Toyota Prius Prime, Chevrolet Bolt, Tesla Model S, Chevrolet Volt, Nissan LEAF, Honda Clarity PHEV, Tesla Model X, Ford Fusion Energi and BMW i3 including the REX. Of those the Honda and Ford aren’t available here in Europe. But yesterday we told you about how well the e-GOLF is selling and yet it can’t get over 200 a month in the USA.   DYSON DOUBLES UP Readers of Autocar may have picked up on the latest news from Dyson, makers of fine vacuum cleaners and hand dryers, who are making the pivot into electric cars. It seems the reveal of their first EV is still set for 2019, and now they’re increasing their workforce with 300 new hires in their EV department. So far Dyson has announced £2billion ($2.7billion) investment in their electric car project. They are due to move into a 750 acre facility with their 700 employees working on their huge EV investments, which include big bets on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Solid State batteries, following their Sakti3 investment in 2015. James Dyson is not a fan of diesel and how governments have incentivised buying them. He says: “Governments around the world have encouraged the adoption of oxymoronically designated ‘clean diesel’ engines through subsidies and grants. Major auto manufacturers have circumvented and duped clean air regulations. As a result, developed and developing cities are full of smog-belching cars, lorries and buses. It is a problem that others are ignoring,” https://paultan.org/2018/03/02/dyson-ev-crew-to-gain-300-develop-ai-tech-report/   DAYS AWAY FROM GENEVA VW is set to show off it’s 4th EV at the 88th Geneva Motor show. They will be taking the new Vizzion EV to Switzerland as an addition to the I.D., I.D. Crozz and I.D. Buzz. This is the model which will be up against the premium luxury cars like the Model S, but not until 2022. Looking forward 4 years, Volkswagen are confident of having Level 5 autonomous driving in place. Also at Geneva will be one of the recent hits, that’s the Hyundai Kona. We only heard the specs a few days ago but forums and EV blogs seemed delighted with the first of a new breed of electric cars and PHEV hybrids coming from Hyundai / Kia. The WLTP range of almost 300 miles should be good for 250 miles in real world driving which is enough for week long commuting, taking the kids to football practice and a day trip on Sunday. You might only plug it in once a week. https://www.drive.com.au/motor-news/sunday-7--most-anticipated-cars-of-the-geneva-motor-show-117443.html?trackLink=homePageNews1   SEAT GO RACING WITH CUPRA Well talking of Geneva SEAT will launch the Cupra e-racer as what they call the worlds first 100 percent electric racing touring car. Based on the SEAT Leon platform it will then be supersized with new bumpers, bonnet, grill and a suitably extravagant rear wing, adding plenty of carbon fibre along the way. https://www.carscoops.com/2018/03/cupra-e-racer-worlds-first-ev-touring-car/   Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. This week John McElroy and Peter De Lorenzo will attempt to navigate the EV hype and get down to the heart of the matter: are electric cars really here to stay? Of course we’ll get into the top news of the week as well: GM earnings disappoint, experts are sounding the overcapacity alarm in China and Lexus is calling it quits on the HS 250h. All that and much more on this week’s show.

NACTOY's New Day? Since 1994, the first awarding of the North American Car of the Year, there has been a parade each year of three finalists with one winner. Amid the 48 contenders and 16 eventual winners with their sleek designs and top-notch engineering there's been only one car that many observers considered a gateway to the 21st Century, and that was the Toyota Prius Hybrid. Well, it may be 11 years later but welcome to the 21st Century. This year the more than 50 jurors of the North American Car of the Year chose not just one but two ground-breaking finalists by adding both the Chevy Volt plug-in and Nissan's Electric LEAF to its final three. But let's not forget the third member of the COY finalists, Hyundai's hot-selling Sonata, with its more standard internal combustion engine which received review after glowing review throughout 2010. On this week's Autoline, NACTOY founding member John McElroy is joined by two of his fellow jurors, Eddie Alterman from Car & Driver and Marty Padgett from High Gear Media, as they discuss all three finalists, what they mean to the auto industry and who they each believe will be the 2011 North American Car of the Year.
