Shoot us a Text.Today is our fearless leader Paul J Daly's birthday! So we gave him the morning off and tapped in producer Nathan Southwick. We're talking all about the new Canada and Mexico tariffs that put pressure on the automotive supply chains, plus the top depreciating cars and how Google is pushing to achieve artificial general intelligence.Show Notes with links:The U.S. has enacted 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, throwing the highly integrated North American production network into turmoil. The tariffs, effective today, March 4, apply to all imports except Canadian energy products, which face a lower 10% duty. Canada and Mexico both responded with their own tariffs.Industry experts predict vehicle prices could rise between $4,000 and $10,000, with Ford CEO Jim Farley cautioning that prolonged tariffs could "blow a hole in the U.S. industry that we have never seen."Flavio Volpe, president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers' Association said that there is potential for U.S. and Canadian auto production to revert to "2020 pandemic-level idling and temporary layoffs within the week.”Key auto models at risk include the Toyota RAV4, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Chevrolet Equinox and Blazer, and the Honda Civic and CR-V, while European automakers with manufacturing in Mexico, including Volkswagen, Stellantis, and BMW, saw their stocks drop sharplyThe STOXX Europe 600 Automobiles and Parts index fell 3.8% and Continental AG, a major supplier, saw an 8.4% drop in shares.Used Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles saw the steepest depreciation of any cars in 2024, according to Fast Company's analysis of CarGurus data.Model Y prices dropped 25.5%, while Model 3 prices fell 25% from January 2024 to January 2025.Comparatively, the Nissan Maxima only dropped 5.2%, and the Ford Mustang declined 5%.Full Top 10: Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3, Land Rover Range Rover, Jeep Wrangler 4xe, Chevrolet Express Cargo, Ford Transit Connect, RAM ProMaster, Land Rover Range Rover Sport, Chevrolet Bolt EV, and Ford Expedition, all with over 19% depreciationGoogle co-founder Sergey Brin is back and pushing Google DeepMind (GDM) teams to accelerate their progress toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). In a newly released memo, Brin outlines the urgency and expectations for Google's AI teams.Brin emphasizes the need for 60-hour work weeks, daily office attendance, and faster execution by prioritizing simple solutions, code efficiency, and small-scale experiments for faster iteration. He calls for a shift away from “nanny products” and urges teams to “trust our users” more.Brin, who has no formal role at Google beyond a board seat, stepped in over the head of Google DeepMind, Demis Hassabis, signaling the urgency of the AGI race."I think we have all the ingredients to wHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Jill and Tom opened this week's show by bidding farewell to the Chevrolet Malibu. The long-running midsize model, available only as a sedan in recent years, is being discontinued by General Motors to make production space for an all-new Chevrolet Bolt EV. The hosts also expressed their confusion regarding Tesla's recent dismissal of the company's charging-network staff. Tom commented on a rumor that Tesla may be positioning the charging division for a possible spinoff. Still in the first segment, Jill shares her impressions of the updated Subaru Forester, which features freshened styling, upgraded cabin appointments, and improved connectivity. The 2025 Forester goes on sale soon. In the second segment the hosts welcome Christian Appel of Nikola to the program. The Global Head of Product and Programs at Nikola, Christian talked about the company's new hydrogen fueling stations, its current fuel-cell and electric trucks, and future plans for the zero-emissions vehicle manufacturer. In the last segment Jill is subjected to Tom's “Is it a Pontiac?” quiz, and the hosts chatted briefly about the ongoing Nissan-product fire sale, which includes massive incentives on popular models.

Shoot us a Text.Five days out from ASOTU CON we're talking about Ford's re-think of EV strategy in Europe of all places. We also talk about Tesla's advantage in bi-directional charging, as well as an homage to an iconic mid-sized grocery getter. Show Notes with links:Earlier in the week it was the Lincoln brand and now Ford is pumping the brakes on its all-electric pledge for Europe by 2030, adjusting to the slower-than-expected uptake of EVs across the continent.Ford originally committed in 2021 to sell only electric cars in Europe by 2030, outpacing EU emissions goals. Now, they might extend sales of ICE vehicles if demand persists as the company reports a "softer" demand for EVs than anticipated, prompting a reevaluation of their strategyTo this point, Ford has invested $2 billion in converting its Cologne, France factory for electric vehicle production, with new electric models set to launch soon.In response to the U.K.'s strict ZEV mandate, Ford plans to limit ICE vehicle sales rather than incur losses on forced electric sales.Martin Sander, head of Ford's passenger cars business in Europe said, "We are not going to pay penalties. We are not going to sell electric vehicles at huge losses just to buy compliance."Tesla is enhancing its competitive edge with a new bi-directional charging technology, setting the stage for significant advancements in its energy business.Tesla is introducing bi-directional charging with the Cybertruck, offering this technology at significantly lower prices compared to competitors like GM.The company is showcasing higher profitability in its energy sector than in automotive, with expectations to boost energy storage deployments by at least 75% this year.Utilizing its Autobidder platform, Tesla is optimizing energy usage across its products, potentially transforming every car into a mini power station. However, Tesla's bi-directional charging could disrupt its own Powerwall sales, as the technology allows vehicles to supply power back to the grid.Quote from Vaibhav Taneja, CFO of Tesla: "We are aiming to exploit the significant storage capacity with an expected increase in energy storage deployments by at least 75% this year."We're ending the show today with a fond farewell to a vehicle that started off as cool and muscle-ly but then developed a utilitarian dad-bod as GM is bidding farewell to the Chevy Malibu after six decades in it's shift to focus on EVs.GM is ceasing production of the Chevy Malibu in November, making way for a significant investment in the Chevrolet Bolt EV at its Kansas City plant. The automaker has sold over 10 million Malibu cars globallyThe Malibu's departure marks the end of an era, leaving the Corvette as the last gas-powered Chevrolet car, following the discontinuation of the Camaro in 2024.GM simply said "We are making room for approximately $390 million investment in an updatHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Twit Elon Musk may be tarnishing the Tesla Brand as we navigates his way through Twitter ownership. The European Union bans the sale of new combustion vehicles by 2035. Small modular nuclear reactors largely rely on highly enriched urnanium that only comes from Russia. So that's a problem since Russia invaded Ukraine. A large bank is getting scolded for greenwashing during last year's COP climate conference. Turns out they're really into financing fossil fuels. The IEA says carbon emissions will peak in 2025, sooner than previously thought. Why? Thanks to Russia invading Ukraine.  British PM Sunak may attend COP 27 afterall. King Charles would like to join him but the government won't let him. Cruise ships are way worse than travelling by airliner for carbon emissions per person, per mile. James gets angry at a Nissan ad starring Brie Larson telling people to buy a gas guzzler and not wait for 'furturistic' EVs. I'm Brian Stockton. I'm James Whittingham. This week, it's not just natural gas that comes from Russia. So that's the specialized uranium used in small modular nuclear reactors. Whoopsy. The European Union has officially banned new combustion and cars in 2035. Now. If only they could ban the Eurovision song contest. A large multinational bank is getting scolded for greenwashing. Brian I'm old enough to remember what a multinational bank greenwashed. It meant laundering money for criminals. According to the IEA, carbon emissions will peak in 2025. They also said our podcast peaked in 2020, which I thought was kind of me. Why do they keep studying us? Anyway? All that and more on this edition of the Clean Energy Show. And welcome, everyone, to our weekly podcast on climate and clean energy. If you're new, be sure to subscribe to get all of our episodes delivered to you weekly. More on the show. Brian we have is Twitter owner Elon Musk damaging Tesla's brand? Answer is yes. Will British PM Sunak attend Cop 27? And will King Charles be jealous? Answer is also yes. Well, I'm spoiling everything. SMRs have a geopolitical problem thanks to Russia invading Ukraine, poland bosched its nuclear ambitions and is now letting foreigners run the show. And how Africa can benefit even more than the rest of the world by installing renewables. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. All kinds of stuff we're talking about this week. So much stuff to do. So one thing I wanted to catch up on, which I just sort of mentioned off the cuff last week, we somehow started talking about a transatlantic cruise. Something I've always wanted to do is take a cruise across the Atlantic rather than airplane because it would be sort of old fashioned and fun and less stressful than plane travel. I've always wanted to do it, but I've done some googling and it turns out, in terms of a carbon footprint, taking a ship across the Atlantic is worse than flying. But, yeah, I just wanted to follow up because I didn't sort of cite any sources last week because I just kind of mentioned it off the cuff. But if anyone wants to Google that, there's sort of a few articles here, but there's one from the Guardian that's way back from 2006, and it quotes Climate Care, which is a carbon offsetting company, and they calculated it at 00:40 3 passenger mile on a cruise ship and only .25 for a long haul flight. So point 43 versus point 25 for airplane travel. So, yeah, it does appear that taking a ship, one of those big cruise ships anyway, like, maybe you could still away on, like, a cargo ship that's going anyway. I mean, that'd probably be well, they put swimming pools on those ships, multiple swimming pools, ads on my social media. They've got a go kart track on the top of one of these cruise ships. Really? Wow. Jeez. I'd like that. Hopefully there's a barrier so you don't fly off into the ocean. Yeah, cruise ship. It's like you're moving basically a small city across the ocean. So I guess we shouldn't be surprised that it's worse in terms of carbon emissions. And then also possible, like, they sometimes do things like burn their waste because they've got so much waste on a ship and things like that are not good. We should have done something on a sustainable Halloween because it was Halloween last night. And what's your favorite Halloween candy? You're not known for your sweet tooth, I'll say that. Yeah. What did you steal from the kids, Brian? Come on, be honest. Well, we had some, like, Swedish Berries that were pretty good. Those are good, aren't they? They do really ring the bell in the old brain, don't they? They're nice. There are a lot of things. My least favorite is smarties. I have a box right here. Oh, I like smarties. You're the guy who likes smarties. Smarties. I looked this up yesterday, is at the bottom of the preferred candy lists all over the Internet. At the bottom. Wow. I like smarties. You like smarties. And I'm going to eat them right now out of not spite, but because I have to. And also, I will point out, you know, the candy that we call rockets, a little sugar candy, in America, those are known as smarties. What? Yeah. They don't have smarties like we have smarties. Really? Yes. Smarties here in Canada are kind of vaguely like an eminent M. It's a chocolate covered candy covered chocolate in different colors, but they're not very good, the M and Ms. I will tell you, this is a knowledge that I have deep knowledge of candy have ground up peanuts in the shell, which is why you cannot, if you have a peanut allergy, eat M and M's chocolates. These do not. And I really noticed the flavor difference. Like, they have a flavor to their shell in M and Ms. But do you see M amp M very much? No. We had a lot of help. Do you have trick or feeders? Did you do that? Yeah, just maybe a couple of dozen. Well, that's pretty good. My son was texting me all night from his great uncle's house in town where he goes to university. And his uncle, who's 83, and his twin lives in Regina, is very close to us, his sister, and he was giving out he didn't give out anything last year, so when my son was there so my son was kind of wondering what Uncle Gary gives out christmas oranges. He gives out oranges. Interesting. And my son was very upset by this, but then it got worse because then Uncle Gary made him hand out the oranges and accept the wrath from the kids. How embarrassing. Apparently, there was a meme to give out potatoes, so people were giving up potatoes this year. We did that as a joke. We had some potatoes lying around and we said we should give those out. The thing is, Brian, people are paranoid, even when we were kids about Halloween, catty rather, and those oranges are going to the landfill. Yeah, probably. Maybe one in 20 will be eaten. I bet you most of them will be thrown out, especially when they're handed to a long haired teenager. There are already reports of marijuana gummies getting into the Halloween supply in Winnipeg. I'm sure it's possible, although they're kind of expensive. That's kind of an expensive maybe you get high, you make mistakes, Brian. I don't know. The other thing I want to mention is I've got another Tesla appointment in Saskatoon on Friday. I'm starting to have troubles with the heat again. Something like that kind of happened last winter where it seemed like it was not blowing enough heat, but it never put up an error warning or anything, so I was never able to kind of get it fixed. But now there's a little error warning, so I got to make the drive up to Saskatoon on Friday to see what's up with that. Did you Google the error warning? Nope. No, I didn't. It just said, Climate keeper not available due to system fault. So there's some kind of system fault and they're going to see me on Friday. Well, we've had above normal weather, but it's going to cool down and good luck. It's going to be very cold very soon. It works for a little while, and then you're driving around and then suddenly it's blowing cold air. That's going to be an unpleasant 5 hours of driving then potentially, yeah, the temperatures got to dropping a bit by Friday, so we'll see. It kind of comes and goes. So hopefully I'll just warm, I should say. So let's see what's the Friday forecast here. Checking the weather here and to see if Brian is going to be available for next show. So this is a scheduling issue here that we're looking at. Will Brian be dead Friday? Five plus five plus five. Celsius and sunny. So the sun really makes a difference. Is the middle of the day you're going or I haven't decided if I'm going to go the day before or not. Oh, because you're going to make a trip out of it. Hit the restaurants, the museums, everything in your retirement is a tourist activity. It's just totally even with your snowden, it's like, oh, this is great. I got nowhere to be. It must be good. The big discussion topic this week is Elon Musk, because he is the head of Twitter, and he was the head is the head of Tesla. Now, Tesla is an important company in the energy transition, and we've been following every eye glitch of Musk for 20 years, and now he's gone off the rails. I think the discourse in America is about to get way worse, thanks to new Twitter CEO Elon Musk. Musk took over the Twitter on Friday, and immediately there was an explosion of hate speech, including use of the N word on the platform, which jumped 500%, leading Twitter to change the landing page from what's happening to Me. Because yesterday Musk replied to a tweet from Hillary Clinton about the attack on Paul Pelosi that condemned the violence and conspiracy theories with a link to a homophobic conspiracy theory blaming the victim of the violence. That's not just awful, that is beyond the pale. And so is Elon Musk bathing picture of Elon on the beach. But anyway, very pissed. My point is, as you can hear from the audience, he's becoming not a happy, popular guy anymore. Used to be no one knew who he was, right? I bet when you bought your first Tesla stock, 99 out of 100 people wouldn't know who he was, practically. Or maybe not that extreme, but a lot of people didn't know who he was, and now he's a villain. It's almost like, Let Trump on Twitter so that Musk is not the biggest villain. So my question to you is, as a loyal fan who has not broken down yet and has total faith in Elon, when's your faith going to crumble? What's it going to take? Is he going to have to invade Poland? What's going to happen? Say, I have faith in Elon. I have faith in Tesla. Like, the mission of the company is solidly on track. They're doing great. I don't know. It's not like this is going to derail what Tesla is doing. What happens if he starts doing crazy things? I know he mentioned in the last conference call for shareholders that he said something about, in case I go crazy. This is like the backup. Like, they can take over and do things. So it's almost like he was seeing it coming, but he's getting kind of Kanye. I'm just waiting for antisemitic tweets and then anticlimate tweets. I've predicted this for a while. I can see it coming. And it was like five years ago, I saw an interview with him where he was interviewing okay. An attractive woman was interviewing him for a network, and he started flirting with her. And I thought, this is kind of unhinged, especially since he just ended one marriage. He was about to get his next. He said, you do know anyone I could date in the middle of an interview for a business channel? And it was just so bizarre that I started to lose faith in him and started to question. It just makes me nervous. It makes me nervous. And now he's trying to make people with blue ticks on their Twitter account pay $20 a month to have your verified account. Well, as we said many times, clean energy is going to win because it's better and it's cheaper. So whether he charges people on Twitter, I don't really see how that affects Climate Change. I see it as he's making stupid decisions. And I'm worried that those stupid decisions could make it into Tesla. And I asked myself, like I've said this before, what does it mean for Tesla to have a person, like, go off the rails? Who's running the company. Are they stable enough now? Does it matter anymore? Is his ingenuity, the things that he's developed, like solving problems. Like it costs too much. So we'll make one giant piece out of one casting machine. We'll build the machine that makes the machine. If that goes away, is Tesla still I mean, if he's wrapped up in cellophane somewhere, talking to himself, can the clean revolution go ahead? That's my question to you. And you say it's probably okay, but I worry about it. Yeah, because clean energy is better and cheaper. So, you know, all this just seems like a distraction. And, you know, here's another thing, Brian, and this is going to be a tough one for you. I have less of a desire to own a tesla than I did two weeks ago. And I think that's true for a lot of people. Yeah. And I think that could continue and it could get worse, because he's gathering up all this storm of disdain for him that people could be ashamed to drive a Tesla one day instead of proud of it. And that I worry about because of the company's bottom line is not good if it slows down. The fact is, that's not going to be an issue for a long time because there's just so much demand, which we talk about every week on our show. Now I'm blocking anyone who serves me an ad on Twitter because GM said that they were going to stop temporarily serving ads. That didn't last long because I started getting GM ads again. Really? Yeah. So maybe it's a Canada US. Thing. Maybe they're still doing it in Canada. Well, it's true. I didn't get any ads at all when he took over Twitter for about two days, and then GM came back on, so I blocked them. And that's the one thing I might actually buy, is a GM car. Right. So they know that. And it's just kind of weird, because if everybody who has a blue check mark pay the $20 a month, it would be like $75 million, which is a drop in the bucket compared to the 5 billion in advertising. Right. So it doesn't matter. So if you drive people like Stephen King off there was a funny joke, one of the late night shows that I think maybe it was Saturday Night Live. The joke was. Why is everyone so upset that Elon Musk could ruin Twitter? I honestly don't understand why people are so worried that Elon is going to ruin Twitter. As if it's this beloved American institution. It's not like he bought Disney World. It's like he bought the rest of Orlando. It's already bad. It's a cesspool. Who cares if you think it all it is now is slightly better than Facebook. Like, that's all you can say about it? Well, I felt less guilty about it since I don't know. I mean, I will give him the benefit of the doubt for a while and maybe he can clean it up. But so far so far his steps are not indicating that that will happen. But if he could get rid of Bots, that would be a good thing. Bots drive the discourse, apparently. Some people think. Yeah, I don't know, I just think maybe you're getting sucked into the Clickbait news cycle. Like, everything to do with this is fantastic. Clickbait. So whether it's positive or negative, this stuff just generates tons of publicity. I mean, he's only been running it for like, three days. Why do we all fired everybody? He's appointed himself king. He's like there's a skyscraper by himself in his underwear doing God knows what, and it's still better than Face. All you have to do is look at Mark Zuckerberg, who would win in a nude wrestley match? Zuckerberg musk. I think Zuckerberg worked because he's studying martial arts. But anyway, I'd like to see that. A tan off. They should do a tan off. They should. And see who burns the most. Get outside of your basement, people. I got mad. I saw an ad the other day, which apparently was I researched it. It's been around since June and I think that you've seen it before and I just didn't pay attention. And it's a Nissan ad from the company that makes my EV that I love. And it was the first EV mass produced, but they haven't made one until now. OK, this is important. Context. They started in 2010 making the Nissan Leaf the first mass produced all electric vehicle. And just now you can order not yet a Nissan area, which is a small SUV. Right. So then the guy who came up with that program, initially he's in jail and sought to be in jail. I can't remember Carlos, so we'll see about that. Yeah, Carlos going, I think he escaped. I think he's fine. So this is an ad, and I'm going to play right now with Brie Larson doing an ad that I don't care for. In the future, we'll travel to incredible places with the help of magical technology. But what about today? I want my magical future now I have places to go. I can't wait for what? Tomorrow we'll bring. But in the meantime, let's enjoy the ride, because you don't have any EVs to sell. You more on Japanese company who are guest EVs. So I can't see the pictures for that ad, but presumably it's an ad for combustion cars. You don't need to see it. You can hear the car going, Vroom. And in the beginning there's flying cars, but that's fantasy electric future, that's going to be wonderful. I can't wait for it. But until then, well, the thing is, you and I and our listeners know that then is now. Go and buy an electric car. You can find one if you try hard enough. And God knows people do try hard. We retreated something from dawn the other day that a writer for, I believe, the Toronto Star or a photographer went to great lengths. He went to James like lengths to get an electric car. He went up to campus gasing a long way and there wasn't even a bus service. He had to catch a ride to get to a small town to buy Chevrolet Bolt EV because they had one in stock. So it was one of those crazy things, still a short supply. If you only kind of want an EV, you're probably not going to get one because it's too much work. The Financial Times says that Rishi Sunak has opened the door to a possible uturn over his decision not to attend next or this month's UN Cop 27 climate conference in Egypt. This is growing criticism from Tory MPs about him not going. He said he was pressing business and can't go. And we have a story about fossil fuels paying him money as well later in the show. So I just thought he pointed that out. I also thought I'd throw out that Prince King Charles wanted to go and the government wouldn't let him. It's like, wasn't a king get to do whatever he wants? Yes. Isn't that the whole point of being a king? He says no, your first thing should be a big thing, like a trip to Canada. Screw this. Why? You live in Canada. We don't want you here. Go to the conference, make an impact. He is going to host something, though. I think we'll cover that later in the show, too. And Brian, I wanted to talk about a big feature that I read and listened to in the New York Times from David Wallace Wells. It was a feature in the New York Times Magazine on the weekend. I don't know if you caught it or not, but it was about our climate future and how our climate future is coming into view. We are starting to know what things will look like based on global warming and based on what we have to fight global warming. So it says, just ahead of top 27, the climate future looks both better and worse than it did a few years ago. Related action has made worst case scenarios much less likely, but delay has made best case outcomes impossible too. So where are we headed? And this is a big, big article. The audiobook highs it. They hired an audiobook type reader to read it. Wow. Among energy nerds, the story is well known, but almost no one outside the insular world appreciates just how drastic and rapid the cost declines of renewable technologies have been. That's us. That's us and our listeners. Yeah, we're the insular world. We know what's going on, don't we? We should hire that guy to read our podcast. That was great. Since 2010, the cost of solar power and lithium battery technology has fallen by more than 85%, the cost of wind power by more than 55%. The International Energy Agency recently predicted that solar power would become the cheapest source of electricity in history. And a report by Carbon Tracker found that the global population lives in places where new renewable power would be cheaper than new dirty power. The price of gas was under $3 per gallon in 2010, which means these decreases are the equivalent of seeing gas station signs today advertising prices of under fifty cents a gallon. The markets have taken notice. This year investment in green energy surpassed that in fossil fuels, despite the scramble for gas and the return to coal prompted by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. After a decade of declines, supply chain issues have nudged up the cost of renewable manufacturing. But overall, the trends are clear enough that you can read them without glasses. Globally, there are enough solar panel factories being built to produce the necessary energy to limit warming to below two degrees. And in the United States, planned solar farms now exceed today's total worldwide operating capacity. Librike has taken to speculating about a renewable singularity beyond which the future of energy is utterly transformed. So there you have a big long clip from there, and I recommend reading or listening to it on The New York Times. And you know what I can do? I have a subscription. So you know I'm cheap, my listeners know I'm cheap. But I do have a subscription to The New York Times, and I tried to cancel it because I was saving up my money for other things and they said, well how about fifty cents a month? And I said okay. So yeah, I got it down to month. Not bad for a while. A few years ago I subscribed to the physical copy of the Sunday New York Times. You can actually get that delivered in our city in the middle of nowhere in Canada. It wouldn't come until like Tuesday or Wednesday. And I think you still can get the physical Sunday New York Times delivered to your house. Well, that's pretty cool. It must have been pretty big as well. I had a magic. Oh yeah, huge and thick. It was super fun. It's kind of expensive, so I only did it for a few months, but it was super fun. Our newspaper here used to be big and then it got smaller and smaller. Now it's like a leaflet that's just kind of a story for local news everywhere these days in the internet era. Anyway, since I have a subscription, they let me put out ten gift links per month. So I will put a gift link in our show notes, which as many people as possible or would like, can use it all tweeted out as well. And if you don't go to the Times on a regular basis, I think we give you five articles a month, so won't even matter. But anyway, I'll do that. So let's get on with the show. Okay, so the European Union has now officially banned combustion vehicles from the year 2035 onwards. Wait, I have to get the oil band thing going. Oil band? We don't get to use that every day. Brian we should get it. We always have that. We got to use the oil. Okay, so, yeah, 2035 onward, no more new combustion vehicles can be sold in the EU, which is great. There's another oil band, but it makes me think of so I knew we were going to talk about Tony Siba later on in the show. Prognosticator tony Siba, who has been predicting the end of fossil fuels for quite some time now, and he's got a couple of new videos out on his YouTube page, if you want to look for them. Tony Seba but one of the stats that struck me was because of what's going to happen with transportation as a service, which is like robotaxis or even just electric cars, one of his charts on the new video, and he's had similar charts to this before, but he thinks by 2030, it's 90 or 95% of miles driven, will be electric just by 2030. So, as I've often wondered, it's like, is 2035 even going to do anything? I mean, it may be essentially already banned by 2030 anyway, just because once electric cars exist, and especially if they're autonomous, you're just going to start driving more miles electric. Just like in our house, we have a gas car and an electric car, while we use the electric car way more often, like once that option is available to people, you know, the use of combustion cars to get around is going to absolutely plummet by 2030. There's an interesting stat that I saw in one of those videos that I hadn't seen before, and it was that with transportation as a service now, we should explain that maybe that's like Uber without a driver, and you might subscribe like you do to Spotify or to Netflix, you might pay $20 a month. You might pay $100 a month at first, you might pay an annual fee, but you'll get access to that car service whenever you need it to get to the subway station, to get to work, to whatever you want to do. And it should be roughly one 10th of the cost of owning a car. And he pointed out that it would be less than just the price of gas to travel that distance without the car, without the payment on the car or the charging of the car. All that is less than just the gas for the same car. So, yeah, it's quite a disruption. And I know that many listeners don't believe it, and it is hard to believe that it's coming, but it will come, and it's a question of when. And you can argue about that all day. But I have a story from China later. On that talks about what they are doing, and they're kind of following what Tesla is doing, but with more sensors. We'll get to that later. It's very interesting. And the idea is, I don't know what you pay for your car, but you pay, you have to pay. Well, I'm not going to get into your personal life, but a lot of people go, and they would have a car payment, okay? And they would pay four, five, six, $700 a month, depending on what kind of a car you buy. And then you put gas in it, and you buy insurance and you do maintenance and all that over the course of however you decide to own that, whether you lease it for three years or own it for ten, it is going to cost you X amount of money per month. And that disruption is it's going to be a lot cheaper to just say, okay, forget it. I'm in Canada. It's -1000 out the car is going to pull up in 30 seconds or two minutes after I punch it in on my app. And it's going to be warm. I don't have to warm it up. It takes me somewhere. I'm not going to get into an accident because it's going to drive perfectly and I'm going to do work. I'm going to surf the web and check out what Elon is doing on Twitter, because that's very important or whatever. That's the way the future is, and it's bound to happen by 2030. And I was reading today, people think that a lot of different companies will probably reach that threshold at the same time, and it would be a question of who can deploy it the quickest. And Tesla may or may not have an advantage. We'll see on how that works out. You know what we should do, Brian, next spring, a year after we did our automation test in your car? It's easy for me to say now because I'm committing to something six months from now, we should do it again, same trip, and see how it does then. Hopefully the construction is gone. It's funny because the car almost if we didn't intervene, the car would have gone into a construction site with an open pit. Well, somebody actually did that the other day in our city and went into a pit. Yeah, it was very unpleasant for them. They're okay, although not an autonomous not an autonomous car, but they might have been driving pretty stupidly autonomous from their mind, perhaps. Possibly. Texting SMR fuel is mostly coming from malaria. I saw this on our local newspaper, speaking of our local newspaper or pamphlet, and that is because three provinces in Canada have invested millions, committed millions of federal governments, committed a lot of millions stupidly. To small modular reactors, which don't exist except on paper for the most part. And the thing about these that this pointed out is there's a lot of different reactors, okay? But some of them, most of them require specialized uranium that is high in content. It says natural or uranium is about zero 7% uranium 235. And hellyu is a lot of these reactors are way up at 20%. So that's many times more. And only Russia has that. And guess what? Russia's at war with the world, essentially. Yeah. Well, what about us? We have uranium here in our province. Not that kind of stuff. No, it's no good. It's common blue collar uranium. It's not the good stuff. Right. But guess what? Our premier here in our jurisdiction said, hey, we want the reactor that uses our uranium. So that's a different kind of reactor. And the fact that there are all kinds of different kinds of reactors on paper using different fuels just prevents it from ever being close to cost competitive, which is what we argue on the show. And it's just so sanctions against Russia's cut off the supply. So that's delaying this. And the thing about SMRs is that they're going to take a long time, and the carbon in the atmosphere filling up like water in a glass. And we have to fight that drip as fast as possible and get it down as fast as possible. So, Canadian uranium mines, we do mine uranium here, but we've never built an enrichment capacity because can do reactors the reactors in Canada used to build in the run on fuel that doesn't need enriching. So that's why we don't have it. But Russia does. Anyway, I just want to point that out. It's one more check against SMRs overall that would delay and possibly make them less cost competitive. Well, and that leads us into the next story, which also involves Russia. And this is from the Guardian and the International Energy Agency has released new statistics that say that 2025 will be the peak year for carbon emissions. And basically what they say in the report is this is accelerated from what it was because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine that everybody has kind of accelerated in a good way. You want to point out that this has moved up. Yeah, that's right, because no one really wants Russia's dirty oil. Everyone's plans to accelerate the clean energy. It's all accelerated. And so 2025 is looking like the peak in terms of emissions. Every year when the climate conference comes, we get inundated with all these studies and reports and it all drops at once and we should hire more people next year. That's all I'm saying. It's just a lot of stuff to COVID anyway. The UK's Advertising Standards Authority has banned two HSBC advertisements, advertisements for misleading the public about its efforts to tackle climate change. This is a bank. What is HSBC stand for? Well, it was the Hong kong bank or something, but I don't know, I think they changed their name. Anyway, they're one of the major banks in the world. And during the climate conference, cop 26 in the UK last year, they were advertising things. I've got a picture of it here. It says, Climate change doesn't do borders and we're great. So they're misleading the public, is what they are accused of, about its efforts to tackle climate change, marking the first time this is the first time ever the regulator has taken action against a bank for green washing. And banks, as you know, Brian, are very important in this, but they can't be green washing. And basically, this was seen at a bus stop in London and Bristol and other places like that, and two ads presented as a force for climate good, while making no reference to the climate's ongoing commitment to underwriting fossil fuel projects. That's the issue. Yeah. Well, that's great. I mean, we got to hold people to account when they're just green washing. It sucks. It does. And banks, people are putting pressure on banks, shareholders and customers, and corporations are putting pressure on banks to stop this. And I hate to say it, but fossil fuels are just they're fighting a big fight against losing their power and they have to lose it, they have to go away as fast as possible. And it's just so much of this is going on that I'm glad people are fighting back against it. Yeah. And of course, in the midst of all this, we sometimes talk about hydrogen, which is, of course, one of the potential fuels of the future, especially green hydrogen. And we reported a few weeks ago on the first hydrogen trains that are now operating in Germany. Anyway, I've come across a new website I've started to read only recently. The website is called Hydrogen Insight and it's a news site to do with news about hydrogen, but I'm still kind of assessing it. I'm a little confused by this website because I know a lot of the stories seem to be negative about hydrogen, really, so I'm not quite sure what's going on there, if anyone knows what Hydrogen Insight is all about. And not to say that it's not like fake news or anything, like it's a hit piece kind of website or anything, but I just assumed that a website called Hydrogen Insight would be kind of promoting the hydrogen industry. But anyway, the German government has kind of released a report about the cost of this and basically decided that they wouldn't do any more hydrogen powered trains because it's not cost effective. So the different types of trains so they're saying €849,000,000 for a hydrogen version of a specific train, compared to only 506,000,000 for a battery hybrid, or only €588,000,000 for a conventional electric train. And a lot of trains in Europe run with overhead wires electrically, and it turns out that's the cheapest way, which is, again, one of the things we've always kind of wondered about hydrogen. It is a potential part of the solution, but is it cost effective? And it turns out, in terms of trains, it's not. And like other new technologies that we may or may not need, it's going to take a while to become cost effective if it does, if it ever has even a chance to. But right now what we have to do is replace bad hydrogen with green hydrogen and work on that for the next ten years and get green hydrogen to replace anywhere where we use regular hydrogen or fossil fuel generated hydrogen, such as cement plants and fertilizer production and stuff like that. Yeah. And presumably these costs will improve over time and the hydrogen will get cleaner over time. But if you can just build an electric train, maybe just do that. So Poland is looking elsewhere for nuclear plants. This is from the German news agency DW. After years of shelves plans to build a civil nuclear capacity in Poland from scratch, the energy crunch caused by the war in Ukraine and lower gas supplies from Russia and lack of intermediate immediate renewable substitutes have kicked the issue back up to the political agenda. So Poland is likely to choose the United States engineering firm Westinghouse Electric to build its first nuclear power plant and provide 49% equity financing for the project. Stateowned Korea hydro nuclear power may also be involved. So Korea in the United States in a separate and parallel private nuclear project. However, Brian Greenpeace has been speaking out against this and says the issue of costs piled on unrealistic expectations, on issues of financing, based on unrealistic expectations of market changes delivers, in the end, an unfinanceable project. So they don't think that this will be financed without government paying for it. That's kind of the issue of nuclear these days is private financing. Private investment is not there for it, and then nobody wants to do it. So it's incumbent upon governments to do it or you and I taxpayers. And that's not, in our view, a good thing. So Greenpeace goes on, but at a certain moment, it will hit a wall, and there is less than a 1% chance that nuclear power plants in Poland will be added to the grid before 2050. Well, I mean, I'm not sure where they get that precise figure of 1%. It's an opinion, but still. You know what? It bothers me, though, if it was private companies doing it, that's one thing. But it's always going to be governments. I mean, here in Canada, these SMRs that may or may not from the fossil fuel conservative governments that are driven by hanging on to fossil fuels with their buddies are going to waste all of our money and bankrupt us if we let them keep doing this. Anyway, aside for the tweet of the week. So Tony Seba, as you mentioned, is active. They've wakened him up and dusted him off. He is sort of a guru to us. He's that guy who has been doing it for ten years, twelve years even, and it's ridiculous. His targets are still lining up, his predictions are still there. And it's not hugely innovative stuff he's doing. It's a cost curve. If a new technology comes and you make enough of it, the cost of it goes down and the adoption of it goes up. Yeah. And I think the best statistic from all of his presentations, and he repeated this again in the ones that he just released on YouTube, is the transition from using the horse to using the car in North America in the early 20th century. And the bulk of it, from something like 10% penetration to 80% penetration, happened in only ten years. And that's in spite of the fact of there being basically no roads and no gas stations. And you know what? They asked people? What do you want? Do you want a car? They said, no, I want a faster horse. They didn't realize that a car was not only a faster horse. It wasn't a one to one comparison. It kept you dry and safe and warm, and it didn't poop on you and things like that. Well, I had an AMC Gramline that did that, but that's another story. So there's a thing in his presentation where he showed newspaper highlines headlines advocating for eating horse meat after the transition started because there was too many horses, which is exactly what happened. Yeah, there was all these horses that we no longer needed because everyone was driving cars and literally people ate. Oh, sounds stringy to me. I apologize for the horses up there. I know we have a few listing. So Victor wrote to Tony on Tony Seba on Twitter. He says, Will smaller economies in Far East or Africa benefit more with this phase of the transfer information to solar? And Tony says, absolutely. When we convert to solar power and green the grid in Africa, they're basically leapfrogging from nothing right, to solar. They don't have to build a bunch of power lines or a grid. They're just going to have localized solar wind and battery and a superpower system without having to build an outdated grid. And because they're in Africa and close to the equator, they're going to have the cheapest the more sun you have, the more lower the cost of the solar per unit of electricity. So they'll have the cheapest electricity in the world in Africa, and with that, you can get investment. You can get industry investment. Where do you want to go where the cheapest electricity is if you're using electricity for your company or corporation or factory or whatever. So just like many countries leaf frog to a cell phone infrastructure without having to build a landline telephony system. So, yeah, there's a lot of places in Africa that don't have landlines. They never did. And they have cell phones now and they didn't need them and it was good to just leave frogs. And he says also Sunnier countries will have much lower cost of energy and that does attract and improve the quality of life and solve many issues such as transportation, food and water. So all that and desalination and the treatment of water will help those countries, even if they're poor and don't have access to a lot of water. Hey everyone, we like to hear from you. Brian a fastpaced look of the week in clean energy and climate news. Beyond meat is getting into plant based steak. What do you think? You could eat that? Well, I mean, you know, I'll try it. Sure. The new product, meant to mimic an expensive cut of beef, arrives in over 50 Kroger and Walmart locations across the United States soon and is also available at some Elderson's locations as well as other retailers. Each ten ounce package contains seared plantbased steak tips in bitesized pieces and is priced at 799. And the product is made of ingredients including fava beans and wheat gluten. So if you've got a gluten problem, look elsewhere for your fake beef fake steaks. I'm curious. You are fake steak curious. Officially. Get that printed on the Tshirt someone some of the models emphasized in GM's EVs for Everyone ad campaign, which I keep seeing bryan everywhere. Like the blazer. EV. The Equinox EV might not be widely available as soon as anticipated. Even though they're advertising the hell out of them, they're pushing that back six months. So already we have a delay and I'm not happy about that. Yeah, it sounds like battery supply issues. Brazil's election is a major victory in the fight against climate change, according to many under Bolasnaro Yup. I don't even like saying his name. It's like saying Satan. Deforestation of the Amazon sword to a 15 year high, with scientists warning that the world's largest rainforest was nearing a tipping point beyond which there would be irreversible consequences to the entire planet. So this is good. It was a tight election. He has not conceded yet. Do you think you'll concede? Yeah, it doesn't sound good. We'll see how that plays out as the future of other elections in 2024 happen. GMC Hummer EVs are sold out for two years or more. By the time you get one, they'll be old news. It will be like oh that old thing? I mean, that's a long time. It's true. There's a certain cool factor for these things and cool factor doesn't last forever. It's time for a cesfest fact a 2019 study found that oceans had sucked up 90% of the heat gained by the planet between 1971 and 2010. Another found that has absorbed 20 sixtillion joules of heat in 2020. And that is equivalent to two Hiroshima bombs per second. That doesn't sound good. It does not sound good. Carbon tracker donors with fossil fuel links helped fund Rishi tunax race for PM. Yay for them. Brian. Yeah. So this is a new UK Prime Minister, super rich guy, as you pointed out last week. And yeah, I mean, lots of politicians are funded by fossil fuels, so we probably shouldn't be too surprised. Why didn't he fund his own damn thing so he's not beholden to anybody? You know, if you're that exactly King Charles to host a reception ahead of cop 27 despite not going himself because the government won't allow him. It will bring together 200 international business leaders, decision makers and NGOs. And Brian, we still have not been invited. And I keep refreshing the inbox, but nothing. I can't believe it. From utility dive, texas solar and wind resources saved consumers nearly $28 billion over the last twelve years. That means that the electricity consumed by Texans was $28 billion cheaper over twelve years because of renewables being in the grid. And that is growing rapidly. Yeah, Texas has more renewables, I think, than most people realize. Clean technica Mercedes is going all in on electric in general. The average lifespan for an automotive model is seven years. A Mercedes EClass is due for an update next year. But Brian, it's going to be its last. Mercedes plans to put out only battery electric new vehicles on the road by 2030 and will introduce only new electric platforms. Of course, you and I know that's too late. You should cancel everything now. But it is a signal to the investment world and to the world. The Ram all electric pickup truck is going to debut at this year's Consumer Electronics Show. I guess that's everyone except for Toyota, Brian, that's all the pickup trucks now are going electric. And Toyota will be bankrupt by the time they make that announcement from BBC News. Switching to renewable energy could save trillions, an Oxford University study says. Our central conclusion is that we should go full speed ahead with the green transition because it's going to save us money. And there's lots of studies on that coming out now and, you know, it's only going to get cheaper, so we're going to save even more money as we go along with the cost. Prices are dropping rapidly. Audio is cutting production of its flagship AA luxury sedan. That's his main car. They're cutting production because everyone's buying the electric Audi Etron battery electric vehicle, so they're increasing production of that one electric. Gping Motors has announced its latest EV has received a permit for autonomous driving tests on public roads. According to Chinese automaker, the G Nine is the first unmodified massproduced commercial vehicle to qualify for such tests. So this is like Waymo doing tests in San Francisco and La. But they've got a million dollars worth of equipment rotating and radar and things on the roof, and you can see them from a mile away coming. Whereas the Japanese Motors G Nine is like a Tesla, an SUV for a small SUV. It's got all the sensors built in, and yet they've got permission to do these robotaxi testing in streets of China, which I'm told are very hard to drive in at times. And I saw a test kind of like an FSD autopilot version, did pretty well. There were arguments in the comments about whether it was better or equal to Tesla, but it was kind of doing the same thing. But they do have more sensors than Tesla does. Yeah, that's exciting. That is our show for this week. We'd like to hear from you once again. I'm going to throw my email address out. There it is. Electric vehicles continue to make news this week. In this episode we road test the heavily revised 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV and take a long look at what many suggest is an all-electric future. Some say an electric future is inevitable but an important new study from J.D. Power shows that a big majority of Americans are still very skeptical about an EV for their households. We'll give you a deep dive into the study's findings in the news segment of “America on the Road.” Both Host Jack Nerad and Co-Host Chris Teague will describe their experiences in the newly changed 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV. It has a new look inside and out, and it's equipped with the newest Chevrolet Infotainment Plus system. Not only that, but it also has a new low price. We'll tell you how it stacks up against the other EVs in this week's road test segment. Also in the road test segment, Jack Nerad and Chris Teague will discuss the 2022 Volvo V90 Cross Country. It's a vehicle that combines the attributes of an SUV with those of a station wagon. And we found it to be a breath of fresh air in a marketplace filled with cookie-cutter crossover SUVs. Our special guest this week is Derrick Ty. He's Kia Manager of Product and Pricing Strategy and an expert on the all-new 2023 Kia Sportage compact utility vehicle. Jack Nerad recently had a chance to drive the new Sportage in and around Palm Springs, California. And the drive day included a serious off-road course as well. The 2023 Sportage is trying to re-establish its off-road credentials in this all-new package, We'll have an exclusive interview with Derrick Ty on that vehicle coming up later in the show. Finally, is your vehicle a prime target for catalytic converter thieves? That crime is up astronomically this year and we'll have the details.

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 19th January. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Welcome to a new Patreon Producer JOHN DYSON PODCAST RECOMMENDATION: HOW VOLKSWAGEN IS REINVENTING ITSELF AS AN EV COMPANY - How Volkswagen can reinvent itself as an EV company, with CEO Herbert Diess - Volkswagen is one of the two biggest carmakers in the world — there's a battle every year between VW and Toyota for the top spot; they both sell around 10 million cars a year. - Herbert oversees a huge range of familiar car brands: VW, of course, but also Audi, Lamborghini, Porsche, and Bentley, as well as Skoda and Seat in Europe. A recent management shuffle also put him directly in charge of Volkswagen's software subsidiary, which is called CARIAD, and, of course, he's in charge of VW's aggressive efforts to electrify its lineup and shift all its cars to being EVs. - Herbert and I talked about all of that and the overall transition to EVs, including VW's new EV microbus, which is very cool. We also talked about how a company like Volkswagen can move as quickly as smaller competitors like Tesla. Ford invested $500 million in Rivian in 2019 -- building that to $1.2 billion in the following years -- and has a total stake of around 12% in the Irvine, California-based EV group. The recalled Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV are currently assembled there, but production is down through February as GM prioritizes battery module replacements for the recalled Bolts. - How much GM will save from the abatement is not yet known - GM is also looking to invest billions in Delta Township near Lansing for a battery cell manufacturing plant it's proposing to build there with battery partner LG Energy Solution. GM also applied to receive local and state tax breaks for that project. The vehicle was owned by a longtime car enthusiast who currently owns a Tesla Model S Plaid, a Porsche Taycan Turbo S, and several other supercars. In a walkthrough of the vehicle, the Lucid owner highlighted several of the features he is fond of in the Air, such as its tactile controls, as well as some things he wishes were improved, such as its software and audio system. - With Launch Mode enabled, the Air attacked the quarter-mile without hesitation. Ultimately, the first test of the Lucid Air Dream Edition Performance showed that the vehicle showcased a 0-60 mph time of 2.93 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 10.21 seconds. The vehicle's trap speed was also very impressive at 143.37 mph. - In its third test, for example, the all-electric luxury sedan's 0-60 mph dropped to 2.88 seconds, which is closer to the 2.5 seconds estimated by Lucid. The new SC is set to make its formal debut at the opening round of the Formula E season later this month in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia. - “Formula E is delighted the Porsche Taycan Turbo S will serve as the championship's Safety Car from Season 8,” says Jamie Reigle, CEO of Formula E. “The Porsche Taycan Turbo S is the pinnacle of high performance electrified vehicles and will light up Formula E city racetracks around the world.” - Porsche Taycan SCs are fitted with highly visible light bars and the necessary toggles and switches in the cabin to operate them properly. - Mechanically, however, the Formula E Porsche Taycan seems to be almost stock. Using a Ford Transit van as the basis of the concept, Winnebago and its powertrain partner, Lightning eMotors, swapped in an an electric motor and an 86.0-kWh battery pack. - While Winnebago did not release an estimated horsepower rating for the e-RV camper van concept, it did say that estimated driving range would be 125 miles per charge, which is significantly shorter than today's EV passenger vehicles. But the Winnebago has a bed, a kitchenette, and wet bath with a shower, all home-style amenities you won't find in a Tesla. - For right now, the e-RV is merely a concept and Winnebago says that as battery technology evolves there's a potential for additional range. The e-RV concept has an onboard charger that is capable of juicing the battery at an owner's home, at public high-speed charging ports, or while plugged into shore power at a campground. According to Winnebago, the e-RV can charge up in about 45 minutes using a high-speed public charging station. Los Angeles County prosecutors filed the charges in October, but they came to light only last week. - The criminal charges aren't the first involving an automated driving system, but they are the first to involve a widely used driver technology. - In the Tesla crash, police said a Model S was moving at a high speed when it left a freeway and ran a red light in the Los Angeles suburb of Gardena and struck a Honda Civic - NHTSA added that all state laws hold human drivers responsible for operation of their vehicles. Though automated systems can help drivers avoid crashes, the agency said, the technology must be used responsibly. MERCEDES-BENZ EV SALES UPDATE In the first three quarters of the year, sales of hybrid and electric vehicles surged to a record 184,369 units (+142.7%). The Mercedes-Benz EQC sold 17,938 units and the EQA achieved a record 13,021 deliveries thanks to robust demand for zero-emission cars, particularly in Q3 when almost half of all EQ deliveries occurred. The EQS electric flagship went on sale in August. Overall 61,652 plug-in hybrids and all-electric cars were sold in Q3 (+34.1%) of which 19,298 were electric-only vehicles (+38.0%). https://www.daimler.com/investors/reports-news/financial-news/20211006-mercedes-benz-sales-q3.html MERCEDES TO ADD 300 JOBS AT U.S. PLANT IN PREPARATION FOR EV PRODUCTION "Mercedes-Benz will add about 300 jobs at its Alabama assembly plant by the end of this year as the luxury automaker gears up to build electric utility vehicles." reports Automotive News for subscribers: "The factory, in the town of Vance, employs 4,400 and is a production hub for the Mercedes GLS and GLE utility vehicles. Starting next year, it will produce battery-powered versions of the two popular vehicles. Mercedes is hiring for the assembly, body and paint shops, as well as the battery plant, where workers will assemble high-voltage EV battery systems." EQS starts in Q2 and EQE in Q4. At the event, Reuss mentioned two new EV SUVs by name, first confirming an electric version of the Chevrolet Equinox is on its way. Reuss noted that the Equinox EV will be a high-volume model with a starting price of around $30,000.  The other SUV on Chevy's EV list is the Blazer - a mid-size crossover SUV which has been around since 2019 and will now be blessed with a fully electric drivetrain." It was September 2019. His secret weapon, tucked deep into a chart-heavy presentation, was a bug-eyed cargo truck built by a startup few people had heard of." says Bloomberg in the second of their Rivian series: "The order immediately separated the auto rookie from the parade of promising electric startups, providing backing, a big book of business and legitimacy. It also would soon start to draw in additional investment from major players, including Ford Motor Co." Bloomberg adds: "On Friday, Rivian shared new details of the Amazon deal in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, revealing how closely its fate is tied to one of its biggest benefactors. The e-commerce giant will have exclusive rights to Rivian's delivery vehicles for four years after receiving its first one, and it gets right of first refusal to buy the vans for two years after that. There's a clear recognition inside Rivian and with its investors that the van for Amazon is a priority and the pickup a sideshow until production can be ramped up to meaningful volumes. The deal gives Rivian visibility and guaranteed revenue, along with a deadline. An all-hands-on-deck edict has been issued to get the project up to speed — for now, the R1T is taking a back seat." As for the subscriptions their owners can take, Rivian say: “Rivian defines LTR (Lifetime Revenue) potential as the revenue it can generate from its Rivian vehicles throughout its lifetime (considered to be 10 years), if the owner, in this case, subscribes to everything possible. Level 3 driving capabilities account for $10,000, and a monthly subscription plan for infotainment, connectivity, diagnostics, and other services accounts for the other $5,500.” Read more: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-10-06/how-amazon-pushed-rivian-s-van-into-the-fast-lane RIVIAN ADVENTURE NETWORK PRICING AND ACCESS On the charging network: "RAN sites will be exclusive for Rivian owners initially, with Rivian members receiving special rates." InsideEVs says: "The upcoming Rivian Adventure Network (RAN) of DC fast chargers is promised to quickly expand to about 600 sites in the U.S. and Canada with a total of more than 3,500 DC fast chargers by the end of 2023 (see details here). According to Rivian, chargers will be exclusively available to R1T and R1S drivers, but only "initially". At a later point, the network will be opened to other EVs, which is a positive sign and good news for those who were afraid that Rivian's chargers will not be available to the public. Besides Rivian Adventure Network, the company will deploy also about 10,000 Rivian Waypoints charging points by 2023. Those are 11.5 kW AC charging points, envisioned for destination locations or places where drivers spend more time - shops, restaurants, hotels and parks. Those points will be available for all EV drivers." The MG ZS EV first appeared in 2018 and quickly became popular thanks to its competitive pricing. The facelifted model will reach dealerships this November with the intention of making the electric SUV even more attractive to European buyers." according to CarScoops: "ZS EV gets the new LED headlights and taillights of its ICE-powered sibling but adopts a different front bumper that distinguishes it further. The grille is fully covered with a new pattern while the side intakes are smaller giving the car a cleaner and more aerodynamic look.  Inside, the 10.1-inch touchscreen incorporates the new MG iSMART infotainment system with new features, remote control functions, and more connectivity options.  the most important change has to do with the new bigger 72 kWh battery pack offering a 273-mile (439 km) WLTP range. In 2022, MG will also offer a cheaper variant with a smaller 51 kWh battery pack offering a range of 198 miles (319 km)." Not in the UK, though, as the Chinese-owned British automaker has yet to announce details about a possible launch in its home market. Described as the largest and most luxurious MG, the Marvel R Electric is a C-segment SUV offering a choice of two powertrains and starting prices of €39,990 ($46,250) for the base RWD model and €47,990 ($55,500) for the range-topping AWD version." reports InsideEVs: "It offers two all-electric powertrains, one with rear-wheel drive and one with all-wheel drive. Both feature the same 70 kWh battery which enables a WLTP range of 402 kilometers (250 miles) in the Comfort and Luxury RWD trim levels. These models feature two rear-mounted electric motors with a system output of 132 kW (177 hp). The AWD model, available exclusively in the range-topping Performance trim level, adds an electric motor to the front axle for a system output of 212 kW (284 hp). Customers will benefit from quick charging capability at a public charging point (AC) due to the standard 11 kW 3-phase on-board charger. The battery can also be charged at a fast-charging station (DC) with a capacity of up to 92 kW. All models are also fitted with a V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) system as standard, allowing the battery to supply energy to an external electrical system at a maximum load capacity of 2,500W. The company has secured the US$4.4 billion needed by the end of next year through its IPO, but does not want to wait until then to raise further capital." says electrive.com: "Rawlinson explained that the capital raised so far “takes us to the end of 2022, so it doesn't take us to Project Gravity.” Gravity is the name of the brand's second electric vehicle." Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 30th August. GM CHEVY BOLT EV BATTERY FIX COULD BRING MORE RANGE - Owners of 2017-2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV models have had to contend with a reduced driving range for many months, as GM attempted to find a remedy for a battery related fire issue that culminated with a plan to replace all battery modules. - Now GM has confirmed that it's stepping up by offering a significant range boost for those earlier Bolt EVs.  In a communication to some owners sent over the weekend—spotted by friends of Green Car Reports—the automaker emphasized that the all-new lithium-ion battery modules installed in older Bolt EVs will offer “GM's most advanced Bolt chemistry.” - Their pending 8-percent boost in battery capacity is described as “resulting in a range improvement in equivalent driving conditions,” and includes a new 8-year/100,000-mile limited parts warranty covering the battery after the module replacement. - Think of it this way: It's not unusual to see 10 percent battery degradation after a few years of EV ownership. Now for the inconvenience, any range drop will be erased, and they'll likely be getting more range than the cars did when new. For a company that's depending on the reputation of its upcoming Ultium EVs for a decade of growth, that sounds like a smart move. At the Chengdu Motor Show, the firm showed off an 82.5KWh capacity power pack inside a vehicle from Chinese automaker Great Wall Motors. Under normal temperatures, SVOLT says its battery can deliver approximately 373 miles of range on a single charge and allow a car to accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in under five seconds. Original Source : https://www.engadget.com/svolt-colbalt-free-battery-scale-production-234534595.html SVOLT UNVEILS COBALT-FREE BATTERY, CLAIMING FIRST COMPANY TO REACH 'SERIES PRODUCTION' - The company currently employs nearly 3,000 people worldwide, half of whom work in research and development (R&D). In fact, SVOLT has shared that over the past several years, it has dedicated 1,200 R&D personnel to cobalt-free batteries alone. - According to a press release from SVOLT, the manufacturer unveiled what it calls “the world's first cobalt-free battery pack to reach series production.” - However, while SVOLT should be recognized for bringing its EV pack to production, it's tough to justify its claim as the first. For example, Tesla removed cobalt from its lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries last year for the Standard Range Model 3 in China alongside CATL. Panasonic was also developing similar techniques alongside Tesla earlier this year. Original Source : https://electrek.co/2021/08/30/svolt-unveils-cobalt-free-battery-claiming-first-company-to-reach-series-production/ ANOTHER TESLA REPORTEDLY USING AUTOPILOT HITS A PARKED POLICE CAR - Another Tesla has hit an emergency vehicle, apparently while using the Autopilot driver-assist feature, adding to a problem that is already the subject of a federal safety probe. - The Florida Highway Patrol reported the accident just before 5 in the morning Saturday along Interstate 4 in Orlando. No one was seriously injured in the crash, though the Tesla did narrowly miss hitting a state trooper as he left his car to assist another driver who had broken down on the highway. - "The driver stated that [the Tesla] was in Autopilot mode," said the report from the Florida Highway Patrol. Original Source : https://edition.cnn.com/2021/08/30/business/tesla-crash-police-car/index.html THE PLYBERTRUCK IS A TESLA CYBERTRUCK REPLICA MADE WITH WOODEN PANELS - since its unveiling in 2019, the tesla cybertruck has racked up a lot of interest with creatives around the world continuously dreaming up new iterations of the vehicle. with production pushed to 2022, the longing to have one has increased significantly among fans, inciting them to create their own version of the long-awaited truck. such is the case of the plybertruck, a cybertruck replica that ditches the car's stainless steel body and replaces it with wood. - the plybertruck by CJ cromwell was created to participate in the gambler 500 rally - under the plybertruck's wooden body there's a first-generation acura MDX, as reported by carscoops. ‘so while it's obviously not electric like the real cybertruck, we have no doubt that it met the $500 purchase cost cap,' Original Source : https://www.designboom.com/technology/plybertruck-cybertruck-wooden-panels-08-30-2021/ BIPARTISAN TEXAS LAW SMOOTHS THE PATH TOWARD A MORE VIBRANT EV MARKET - On September 1, a bill that helps businesses build a better, brighter future for electric vehicles in Texas will become state law. - SB 1202, makes it possible for companies or individuals that own or operate equipment used solely for electric vehicle charging services to avoid being regulated as electric utilities or electric retail providers. - Electric vehicle charging stations are different. EV owners are not reliant on any particular stand-alone charging station; they use any given charging station and have no further relationship with it after they depart. Any regulatory framework for charging stations should be tailored to what Texas regulators and drivers want from the nascent charging marketplace. - The new law will help ease Texas EV owners' worries about long distance travel — one of the most common barriers to EV ownership. Without the possibility of utility-style regulation, EV charging companies can now develop charging stations more quickly and extensively. This way, a vehicle can obtain information about its surroundings and feed the driver with warnings to slow down if, for example, they entered a school zone. - Audi worked with Qualcomm, a wireless technology company, and Commsignia, a software systems provider, to test C-V2X tech in a 2021 Audi e-tron Sportback. VW Group's strategy to bring down the cost of electric vehicles involves developing common platforms to underpin models across its many brands to conserve costs. - Since these architectures will be used all over the world, "the potential to put an Audi car, production-wise, into the U.S. is even higher than now," Duesmann said Friday on Bloomberg Television. "The likelihood of us producing in the U.S. is there." - Last month, CEO Herbert Diess told Bloomberg TV that the company will decide this quarter on building more electric models in the country. To deliver Model Y and Model 3, the company dispatched three cargo ships from China. So far, two of the three have already reached the shores of Europe and docked at ports in several countries to deliver the long-awaited vehicles to consumers. Vessel Helios Ray with the first Model Ys for the European market arrived at the port of Zeebrugge, Belgium on August 15, later it headed to Emden, Germany, and now it is in Bremerhaven, Germany. According to Tesla ship tracker @mortenlund89/Twitter, a number of Model Ys were unloaded in Zeebrugge to be transported to Norway in another vessel. - Glovis Supreme arrived at the port of Zeebrugge, into which the Model Y from Helios Rayl is supposed to have been loaded. After this, according to @mortenlund89, there were 1,300 Model Ys aboard the Glovis Supreme, which was delivered to Norway on August 20. The first shipment has arrived at the port of Oslo and over a thousand happy customers will soon take delivery of the long-awaited Model Y. It's now expecting to do the same with the rest of the Bolt EV population, including models recently delivered and those in dealer inventories. - The Bolt EV and EUV models use cells made by LG Chem in South Korea through mid 2019, and then Holland, Michigan from mid-2019 on. GM had previously said that the so-called “design level N2.1” made in Michigan were unaffected - GM now recommends that until customers receive new battery modules, they should set their vehicle to a maximum 90 percent state of charge, charge their vehicle more frequently and not allow it below 70 miles of range, and park the vehicle outside immediately after charging. - GM could potentially be replacing all the battery modules—or full packs, as it may turn out—in more than 140,000 Bolt EVs in North America, of which more than 110,000 are in the U.S. - The expanded recall would cost the company $1 billion more than what had been spent on previous Bolt recall efforts, and it stated today that it will seek reimbursement from LG Chem, the cell supplier. These generators are used for longer periods than the propulsion systems but operate at lower power, which makes it easier to replace them with battery-operated versions, - The company is aiming to replace 15,000 combustion engine generators on boats and RVs with electric-powered versions by 2023. - Consumers typically don't spend as much on fuel for their boats as they do for their cars, which complicates the cost-benefit analysis of going electric - The primary market for electric boats today is smaller lakes and waterways where the distance requirements are limited and speeds are lower. Most of the interest comes from Europe where certain municipalities that are highly dependent on boat traffic - The market is even more niche in the U.S.; one of the more popular applications is electric dinghies that ferry the well-heeled from the dock to their parked yachts - about 90% of electric models being sold today operate below 10 horsepower. BMW, Volkswagen and Daimler also signaled a change in delivery expectations due to the shortage. Earlier in the year, BMW said it had ordered enough semiconductors and expected its suppliers to deliver, but in a recent statement, the Bavarians said that supply would remain tight in the second half of the year. The lost output was around 30,000 units so far this year. - Toyota will cut production worldwide 40 percent in September. That translates into 80,000 fewer models produced next month than originally planned. The production cuts will affect Europe, China, United States and other markets. In the U.S., just this month alone, Toyota will deliver 60,000 to 90,000 vehicles fewer than originally planned. - The latest production issues follow news that German chipmaker Infineon was forced to suspend production at one of its plants in Malaysia in June, due to a coronavirus outbreak. A large portion of the worldwide chip production is located in Malaysia - Most analysts point to a return to normality sometimes in 2022 Original Source : https://www.bmwblog.com/2021/08/19/chip-shortages-may-be-getting-worse-for-automakers BATTERY POWER CAPACITY IN THE US GREW BIG TIME IN 2020 - Power capacity — a measure of how much power a battery can instantly discharge — for large-scale batteries grew at an unprecedented pace in the US last year, according to an annual report released this week by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). - 2020 smashed the previous record set in 2018 for the biggest growth in power capacity in the US with 489MW of large-scale battery storage added. That's more than twice what was added in 2018. - Big batteries can also step in when a disaster knocks another power source offline. So on top of cutting down greenhouse gas emissions, they can make the grid more reliable and resilient. - Electricity is currently responsible for a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions in the US. But a clean grid could tackle emissions from other sectors like transportation and heating as cars, homes, and buildings go all-electric. - Battery storage costs have tumbled 72 percent since 2015, the EIA found, which helps explain why the vast majority of large-scale battery storage power capacity available today only came online within the past six years. Original Source : https://www.theverge.com/2021/8/19/22632172/large-battery-power-capacity-us-grew-2020 TESLA HARDWARE 4 COMPUTER TO BE INTRODUCED WITH THE CYBERTRUCK NEXT YEAR - The Tesla Cybertruck will not only debut a revolutionary manufacturing process, it will also be the first vehicle in the company's lineup to be equipped with Tesla's Hardware 4 computer.  Hardware 4 is the successor to the custom HW 3.0 computer that's currently being deployed to the company's vehicles today. Comments about the Hardware 4 computer were made by Tesla CEO Elon Musk during AI Day, which featured an in-depth discussion on the company's AI-driven initiatives. - Musk remarked that a HW 4.0 or FSD Computer 2 would be introduced in the future. This unit would be a step up from the already impressive HW 3.0 both in performance and safety. - HW 4.0 will be introduced in the Tesla Cybertruck “in a year or so.” Musk later noted that with Hardware 3.0, Tesla's self-driving systems could perform about 300% safer than a human, but for HW 4.0, this number could increase to 1000%. Original Source : https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-hardware-4-cybertruck-release-date NIO ET7 WINTER TEST COMPLETED IN NEW ZEALAND - Since the NIO ET7 was introduced at NIO Day, the Chinese automaker conducted tests in various locations toward mass production. Among these tests was a fundamental and indispensable part, the winter test. This included a systemic and complete collection of dynamic tests on all types of low-adhesion roads to ensure a safe and comfortable driving experience for users in different scenarios. The summer season in China did not provide the environment and low temperatures the test required. However, New Zealand in the Southern Hemisphere allowed NIO to complete the test promptly. - In July 2021, NIO spent a month testing the NIO ET7 in winter conditions. The renowned Southern Hemisphere Proving Grounds (SHPG) of New Zealand, with about 4.9 million m2, boasts 37 snow flats, ice flats, and handling tracks. Situated in the piedmont area adjacent to the Cardrona Valley near Queenstown, a complex mountainous landscape simulated various test environments close to everyday vehicle-use scenarios. - The entry level 70kWh unit offers a 310-mile (500 km) range, with a 100kWh version offering 435 miles (700 km). The top model with a ginormous 150kWh battery pack has a claimed range of more than 621 miles (1,000 km). All the figures are calculated using the Chinese NEDC system. Mr. Trump loosened the standard in 2020 to about 44 miles per gallon by 2026. The new Biden standard would be 52 miles per gallon by 2026.   Original Source : https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/05/climate/biden-tailpipe-emissions-electric-vehicles.html   BIDEN'S DRIVE FOR THE FUTURE   - Sometimes it isn't what you say but who'll stand with you when you say it. On Thursday President Biden stood alongside the leaders of the big three U.S. auto makers and the president of the United Auto Workers as he announced his goal that half of all new cars sold by 2030 would produce no tailpipe pollution and directed the Environmental Protection Agency to begin developing new standards for cars, trucks and buses. The Biden administration has unified manufacturers, labor and environmental groups behind a common purpose: to accelerate the manufacturing of zero-emitting vehicles and the economic, health and climate benefits they will provide.   - Mr. Biden is also sending an unmistakable sign that the U.S. intends to lead in developing zero-emitting vehicles—a signal that will provide the long-term certainty that manufacturers need to plan. That will help unlock the next $100 billion in investments and the jobs those investments will create here in the U.S.   Original Source : https://www.wsj.com/articles/bidens-executive-order-electric-vehicles-climate-change-united-auto-workers-11628201478   BIDEN NEEDS TO ACCELERATE EFFORTS ON ZERO-EMISSION CARS   - Here's the harsh reality: The status quo is unsustainable, and targets and aspirations are no longer sufficient. It should be obvious by now that climate change is creating havoc and destruction across the globe. It will take dramatic action to cut greenhouse gas emissions enough to prevent a climate catastrophe. In the U.S., where gas-powered cars and trucks are the single largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, that means accelerating the transition to clean vehicles.   Original Source : https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2021-08-06/biden-clean-cars   TESLA JUST GOT SNUBBED BY BIDEN'S ELECTRIC VEHICLE SUMMIT   - President Joe Biden celebrated ambitious electric vehicles goals by automakers at the White House on Thursday. But he did so without the world's largest maker of EVs: Tesla. Joining Biden were executives from General Motors (GM) and Ford (F), as well as Stellantis, the company formed by the merger earlier this year of Fiat Chrysler and France's PSA. But electric vehicles are only a sliver of these companies' US sales — 1.5% for GM and 1.3% for Ford so far this year, and Stellantis doesn't have any pure EVs for sale on US soil yet.   - One potential reason for the apparent snub: The United Auto Workers union will also be at the ceremony. The UAW represents workers at GM, Ford and Stellantis, but has been battling, so far unsuccessfully, to organize Tesla workers at the EV maker's plant in Fremont, California.   - Volkswagen (VLKAF), which has surpassed Tesla in EV sales in Europe so far this year, is due to start building an EV for the US market at its Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant in 2022. But the UAW has twice failed to win union representation votes at that plant. The German automaker also will not be represented at the White House event.   Original Source : https://edition.cnn.com/2021/08/05/business/tesla-snub-white-house-event/index.html   BIDEN SEEKS TO MAKE HALF OF NEW U.S. AUTO FLEET ELECTRIC BY 2030   - The goals of both Biden and the automakers include battery electric, fuel cell and plug-in hybrid vehicles that also have a gasoline engine.Biden has repeatedly resisted calls from many Democrats to set a binding requirement for EV adoption or to follow California and some countries in setting 2035 as a date to phase out the sale of new gasoline-powered light-duty vehicles in the face of opposition by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union.   - After signing the executive order on the South Lawn of the White House, Biden jumped into a waiting EV Jeep, which he proceeded to drive rapidly around the grounds.   - Hyundai (005380.KS) said it supports the 2030 40-50% EV sales goal, while Nissan said it has a target that more than 40% of its U.S. vehicle sales by 2030 be EVs. Toyota (7203.T) in a statement called the goal "great for the environment" and said it would "do our part."   - BMW (BMWG.DE), Honda (7267.T), Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE), Ford and Volvo Cars (0175.HK) - which previously struck the California deal - said in a joint statement they support the administration's EV goal but the federal government must take "bold action ... to build consumer demand."   Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/biden-set-target-50-evs-by-2030-industry-backs-goal-2021-08-05   ALLEGRA STRATTON COMMENTS DRAW CRITICISM   - Electric car experts have rallied to the defence of the vehicles after suggestions from a government spokesperson that they were unsuitable for long journeys.   - Allegra Stratton, spokesperson for the Cop26 climate summit, courted controversy when she told Times Radio on Monday that she continued to use a diesel car because of taking long journeys to Scotland, Wales and Gloucestershire for family visits.   Original Source : https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/aug/03/experts-defend-electric-cars-after-allegra-stratton-comments   VOLKSWAGEN'S HERBERT DIESS CRITICIZES IONITY CHARGING EXPERIENCE   - Volkswagen Group's boss Herbert Diess has responded to a LinkedIn post, sharing his not too good charging experience at the IONITY fast charging network in Europe. You may recall that IONITY was founded by BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company and the Volkswagen Group through Porsche AG, with Hyundai Motor Group also joining later.   - It's not only the size of the network that's lagging; Herbert Diess points out that the stations are lacking in other areas, including reliability and restrooms.   - Too few charging points on the burner! Only 4 - of course, everyone stops at the shopping center. Occupied. So continued to Trento. Even after the criticism last year: no toilet, no coffee, a column except for operation / defective, sad affair. This is anything but a premium charging experience, IONITY!" - via Google Translate   - It appears that the IONITY network is at the crossroads right now as it will have to secure more investments from the founders to improve and expand. But will they be willing to invest or just seek opportunities elsewhere?   Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/524953/volkswagen-herbert-diess-criticizes-ionity/   ELECTRIC VEHICLE SALES OUTPACE DIESEL AGAIN   - More electric vehicles were registered than diesel cars for the second month in a row in July, according to car industry figures. It is the third time battery electric vehicles have overtaken diesel in the past two years.   - The UK plans to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, and hybrids by 2035.   - In July there was "bumper growth" in the sale of plug-in cars, the SMMT said, with battery electric vehicles taking 9% of sales. Plug-in hybrids reached 8% of sales, and hybrid electric vehicles were at almost 12%.This is compared with a 7.1% market share for diesel, which saw 8,783 registrations.   Original Source : https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-58100474   TESLA CYBERTRUCK STEEL SUPPLIER'S $1.7-BILLION TX FACILITY IS COMING TO FORM   Original Source : https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-cybertruck-steel-factory-update-video/   RUSSIA PLANS TO SUBSIDISE ELECTRIC CARS TO SPUR DEMAND   Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/russia-plans-subsidise-electric-cars-spur-demand-2021-08-04/   BOSTON ELECTRIC-VEHICLE PROGRAM GOOD2GO IS ZIPCAR-MEETS-TESLA   Original Source : https://www.bizjournals.com/boston/news/2021/08/04/boston-good2go-is-zipcar-meets-tesla.html   MAJORITY OF ELECTRIC VEHICLE OWNERS TO MAKE THE SWITCH PERMANENT   Original Source : https://www.motortrader.com/motor-trader-news/automotive-news/majority-electric-vehicle-owners-make-switch-permanent-says-whatcar-04-08-2021   QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM   What's the ideal location for a charging port on any EV? In our domestic market of Germany, nearly one in four BMWs and around 30 percent of Mini sold already have an electric drive train.”    The number of fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles BMW delivered in the first half jumped by 148.6% to 153,243 units in the first half, while deliveries of  all-electric models jumped by 183.9% to 36,087 units.   - “By the end of the year, we aim to have a total of one million fully-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles on the roads and, by 2025, two million pure electric vehicles,” Zipse said. “By then, we aim to deliver ten times the number of BEVs we sold in 2020.”   - The all-electric BMW iX has been rolling off the production line at our plant in Dingolfing since July. This will be followed in the autumn by the all-electric BMW i4 from our main plant in Munich.   Original Source : https://thedriven.io/2021/08/05/bmw-says-sales-of-full-battery-electric-cars-nearly-treble-in-first-half   EV BATTERY PRICE COMPETITION HEATING UP   - Chinese and Japanese electric vehicle battery manufacturers are enhancing their competitiveness with inexpensive products, and competition in the global electric vehicle battery market is continuing to intensify.   - CATL unveiled a sodium-ion battery on July 29. This battery is lower in price than a lithium-ion battery as it uses less expensive raw materials. CATL's sodium-ion battery has an energy density of 160 Wh per kilogram and it can be charged by 80 percent in 15 minutes.   - Panasonic recently announced that it would more than halve the price of its battery. “We will halve the production cost by next year and by up to 70 percent by 2025,” it said. According to industry sources, the current manufacturing cost of electric vehicle battery packs is about US$100 per Wh and Panasonic's goal is US$50 or less.   - At present, South Korean electric vehicle battery manufacturers are trying to lower the prices of their products by reducing the content of cobalt in their relatively expensive high-nickel lithium-ion batteries. LG Energy Solution is planning to initiate the mass production of cobalt-reduced and aluminum-added NCMA batteries in the second half of this year.   Original Source : http://www.businesskorea.co.kr/news/articleView.html   VOLKSWAGEN'S JOINT VENTURE FOR SOFTWARE INTEGRATION   - Volkswagen is seeking to grow automotive software integration and the digital customer experience as core competencies. The company has therefore established a joint venture with TraceTronic, a world-leading provider of solutions to test and integrate automotive software.   - Volkswagen aims to accelerate the development of digital functions such as over-the-air updates, which are provided to the owners of ID. vehicles every three months.   - Volkswagen can already leverage internal Group synergies in developing software for its fully networked vehicles. CARIAD, the Group's software company, is developing a standard software platform for all Group brands. neocx is a further building block in transforming the Volkswagen brand into a software-based mobility provider and has the goal of integrating the digital functions developed by CARIAD into Volkswagen's vehicles   Original Source : https://www.volkswagen-newsroom.com/en/press-releases/volkswagen-and-tracetronic-establish-neocx-a-joint-venture-for-automated-software-integration-7378   2022 NISSAN LEAF FOR $89/MONTH   - The 2022 Nissan Leaf rolls into the new model year with a significant price cut for the shorter-range version. The base price of the 149-mile standard Leaf is down to $28,375 with the mandatory $975 destination charge—so $20,875 effectively if you can claim the full $7,500 EV tax credit. Other state or regional incentives might make the Leaf even more affordable.   - he Leaf is shaping up to be the most affordable new electric vehicle in the U.S. market for the 2022 model year—undercutting the Mini Cooper SE, which had been the low-price EV leader.   - The price cut is all but confirmed as a reaction to the Chevrolet Bolt EV and its $5,500 effective price cut made for 2022, which came with significant updates and a new Bolt EUV model slotting just above the standard Bolt EV in the lineup. The standard Leaf continues with a 40-kilowatt-hour battery pack and a single electric motor rated at 147 horsepower   - The 2022 Nissan Leaf S may at launch offer the lowest-priced electric car lease available nationally. It's listed at $89 for 24 months, with $1,449 due at signing   Original Source : https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1133108_2022-nissan-leaf-price-cut-cheapest-electric-car-in-the-us-market   ELECTRIC VEHICLES: CHINESE AUTOMAKERS TURN TO INFLUENCERS TO MARKET EVS   - Meng, or EV Emma as she's known to her 700,000 followers, is among the swelling ranks of Chinese influencers blogging, vlogging, and flogging cars in the world's biggest electric vehicle market. The money is so good that some like Meng, who graduated from Cambridge University in 2013 and worked as a regional business developer in France, were able to ditch their corporate careers.   - With all the competing models, carmakers are increasingly using influencers to cut through the clutter. Their preferred messengers: media-savvy young people who use social platforms to talk about and review EVs to legions of followers that stretch into the hundreds of thousands. That makes sense because, rather than dealing solely with a dealership, many EV buyers in China browse online, interact with an influencer, or perhaps go to a high-end mall to view the finished product in a boutique-like setting—all before visiting a dealer lot or ever getting behind a wheel.   - As well as being paid directly by automakers for appearances and test drives, influencers make money by charging for social media posts, with the rates they can command typically linked to the number of followers they have. One said he earned 10,000 yuan ($1,550) for posting four shots from the Shanghai auto show.   Original Source : https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-08-04/electric-vehicles-chinese-automakers-turn-to-influencers-to-market-evs   TESLA MODEL S BASE PRICE RISES TO OVER $90,000   - Tesla has been steadily increasing the base price of the Model S, and it has now reached above $90,000. The Long Range model, which previously started at just over $70,000 but has seen numerous price adjustments recently, now costs $91,190 to start according to Tesla's website.   - There's also a more powerful Model S Plaid model available, but its price has not changed since it increased by $10,000 back in June. It starts at $131,190   Original Source : https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a37222155/tesla-model-s-price-adjustment/   TESLA TO START DELIVERING MODEL YS IN HONG KONG AND MACAU   - Tesla will start delivering its Model Y sport-utility vehicle (SUV) in Hong Kong and Macau next month in line with mainland China   - By the end of last year, there were about 18,500 private EVs in Hong Kong and Tesla accounted for 80 per cent, according to data from the Transport Department.   - In Hong Kong, the government is targeting no new registrations of fossil fuel cars, including hybrids, by 2035 or earlier.   Original Source : https://www.scmp.com/business/china-business/article/3143526/tesla-start-delivering-model-ys-hong-kong-and-macau-next   YOU CAN BUY TOM HANKS' TESLA!   - He was one of a very small handful of buyers of the AC Propulsion eBox, a Scion xB converted to run on a 35-kWh electric battery and one of the first electric cars you could buy. And he also purchased a Toyota RAV4 EV back when Toyota was selling those. He has since kept up with the electric car cavalcade, including Teslas.   - Hanks' 2015 Tesla Model S P85D is one of four vehicles that are being offered at the Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction August 13 at the Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley, California. The car has only 13,445 miles on it   - And it's painted in British Racing Green, Hanks' favorite color.  Bonhams estimates the car will go for between $70,000 and $100,000 when the hammer falls in two weeks   Original Source : https://www.autoweek.com/car-life/a37182616/tom-hanks-tesla-for-sale   - Five different battery variants (40, 60, 85, P85, and P85+) were produced in 2012, with nine exterior color choices including Anza Brown Metallic, and Sequoia Green Metallic.  Then 2013/14 you could get ‘Green Metallic'. It's rumored that soon Tesla will also be releasing its own CCS adapter for the North American market.   - owners of CHAdeMO-equipped vehicles will still have the existing 800+ Electrify America charging stations that have CHAdeMO connectors, plus the many hundreds of CHAdeMO stations currently in service in the US on other EV charging networks like Blink, EVgo, ChargePoint, and more.   Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/522882/electrify-america-ends-chademo-installations/   TESLA BATTERY SUPPLIER CATL DEBUTS CHEAPER SODIUM-ION BATTERIES   - Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. unveiled a sodium-ion battery Thursday, a type of lower-density cell that uses cheaper raw materials than batteries made from lithium-ion metals.   - Fujian-based company also launched a battery-pack solution that can integrate sodium-ion cells and lithium-ion cells into one case, compensating for the energy-density shortage of the former while preserving its advantages.   - “Sodium-ion batteries have unique advantages in low-temperature performance, fast charging and environmental adaptability,” CATL Chairman Zeng Yuqun said. “Moreover, they're compatible and complementary with lithium-ion batteries. Diversified technical routes are an important guarantee for the long-term development of the industry.”   - Notwithstanding, CATL said that through breakthroughs in R&D, its first-generation sodium-ion batteries have reached 160 watt-hours/kilogram, a measure of energy density of energy, and should exceed 200 Wh/kg in coming generations.   Original Source : https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-07-29/catl-debuts-sodium-ion-batteries-amid-raw-material-cost-spike   FORD QUICKLY REACHES 120,000 ORDERS FOR ITS TESLA CYBERTRUCK RIVAL   - The interest appears to be building for Ford's first-ever all-electric F-150 dubbed the Lightning.Ford (F) has amassed 120,000 orders for the Lightning, CEO Jim Farley told investors on an earnings call Wednesday evening. About 75% of the orders are from those people new to the Ford brand, Farley said.   - "I would say what we've learned so far [from Lightning orders] is that the customers are largely new to Ford, but they aren't new to the segment. These are customers who really like these silhouetted vehicles. What is really interesting for me is some would portray the full-size truck industry as kind of a conservative customer. It's not what we're seeing. In this very large order bank for F-150 Lightning, they're new to BEV [battery electric vehicle], and they are excited to move to BEV. It notes that the measures are set to resemble a 2019 pact between the state of California and five car makers that mandates a 3.7% annual increase in fuel economy through to 2026.   - Bloomberg notes that activists had previously pressed Biden for emissions curbs that at least matched the 5% reduction he helped broker as Obama's vice president, rather than adopting the “more modest” Californian target in the short term.   Original Source : https://www.carbonbrief.org/daily-brief/biden-plan-would-tighten-mileage-for-new-cars-over-the-next-four-years   LG AND MAGNA FORM ELECTRIC POWERTRAIN JOINT VENTURE TO TARGET EV MARKET   - LG Electronics and Magna International have officially signed a transaction agreement to establish the pair's joint venture that was first announced in December last year. The new company, called LG Magna e-Powertrain, will be based in Incheon, South Korea, and have an initial workforce of more than 1,000 people.   - The pair are hoping the joint venture will combine Magna's strength in electric powertrain systems and LG's expertise in components, such as e-motors and inverters, to expand their presence in the global electric car market. The joint venture will manufacture e-motors, inverters, and on-board chargers. It will also supply components related to e-drive systems.   Original Source : https://www.zdnet.com/article/lg-and-magna-form-electric-powertrain-joint-venture-to-target-ev-market/   TESLA LAUNCHES MAJOR SHIFT IN RETAIL STRATEGY   - Tesla (TSLA) is currently implementing a major shift in its retail strategy, according to sources familiar with the matter. The automaker will move away from showrooms in fancy malls, and instead it will focus on cheaper locations, remote managing of test drive fleet, and delivery centers.   - In 2018, the automaker announced a focus on high foot-traffic retail locations in high-end malls. A year later, CEO Elon Musk surprised everyone, including his own employees, when he announced that Tesla would be closing most retail stores, laying off retail employees, and focusing entirely on online orders.   - The new strategy will see Tesla letting go of most of its high-rent locations in malls and shopping districts in favor of delivery centers.   - But Tesla still plans to expand its physical presence.  However, instead of expensive spaces in malls and shopping districts, the automaker is looking to rent spaces in mall parking lots, warehouses, and other locations to manage test drive fleets and delivery centers.   - Tesla employees working remotely will be able to guide buyers to go on test drives using vehicles from those locations, unlocking cars remotely, and letting them drive the cars.   Original Source : https://electrek.co/2021/07/28/tesla-tsla-major-shift-retail-strategy-cheaper-locations-remote-working/   MERCEDES EQS SUV SPIED WITH PRODUCTION LIGHTS, MAYBACH CONCEPT COMING SOON   - Our spies have caught the Mercedes EQS SUV on numerous occasions, but this is our first opportunity to check out the large electric vehicle with its final headlights and taillights. At the same time, Tesla recently introduced an affordable Model Y version in China, where it refrained from price hikes.   - Tesla raised prices for Model Y Long Range at least six times in the United States this year, bumping by $5,500 to $53,990.   Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/tesla-hikes-electric-car-prices-us-holds-line-china-2021-07-28/   TESLA AI DAY SCHEDULED FOR AUGUST 19, CONFIRMS MUSK   - Tesla's upcoming AI day would be held this coming August 19, 2021. The announcement was shared by Tesla CEO Elon Musk in a recent post on Twitter.   Musk did not share details about the upcoming event, though previous tweets about Tesla's AI Day suggest that the company would be going over the progress it has made in software and hardware, both in terms of training and inference. The CEO also previously mentioned that AI Day's primary purpose is recruitment.   - It would then be interesting to see how Tesla approaches its AI Day. With such a specialized topic and considering the company's experience in the subject, there is a fair chance that discussions and updates on the company's AI efforts may be lost in translation once more.   Original Source : https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-ai-day-final-date-elon-musk/   KELLEY BLUE BOOK NAMES BEST AFFORDABLE USED HYBRIDS, ELECTRIC VEHICLES FOR 2021   - To help car shoppers considering an affordable used hybrid or electric vehicle, the experts at Kelley Blue Book recently published the 10 Best Used Hybrids and EVs Under $20,000 and the 10 Best Used Hybrids and EVs Under $15,000.   - 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV   - 2018 Nissan Leaf   - 2017 Chevrolet Volt   - 2019 Kia Niro Hybrid   Original Source : https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/kelley-blue-book-names-best-affordable-used-hybrids-electric-vehicles-for-2021-301342868.html  m QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM   With 2877 Superchargers globally and 25000 stalls, what do you think about Tesla's plan to open up the network to everyone?   Email me your thoughts and I'll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I'll catch you tomorrow and remember…there's no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.   PREMIUM PARTNERS PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE BRAD CROSBY PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI AUDI CINCINNATI EAST VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/

It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. CHEVY BOLT EV SALES JUMP 54 PERCENT DURING Q1 2021"Chevy Bolt EV sales increased in the United States, Canada, and Mexico while decreasing in South Korea and Brazil during the first quarter of 2021. In the United States, Chevrolet Bolt EV deliveries totaled 9,025 units in Q1 2021, an increase of about 54 percent compared to 5,873 units sold in Q1 2020." reports GM Authority: "Low Chevy Bolt EV sales volume has typically been an area of concern given GM’s EV-focused strategy, which calls for launching 30 electric vehicles by the year 2025. As a result, the vehicle’s overly positive sales performance during Q1 2021 represents a glimmer of hope that sales will continue to rise not just for the Bolt, but for EVs as a whole.  The Bolt EV will receive a thorough refresh that will launch mid-2021 as a 2022 model year vehicle. Updates to the model include new front and rear fascias, along with various improvements to the interior.  At the same time, it be joined by a new sibling model called Bolt EUV." https://gmauthority.com/blog/2021/05/chevrolet-bolt-ev-sales-numbers-figures-results-first-quarter-2021-q1/ TESLA IS REPORTEDLY TESTING LUMINAR’S LASER SENSORS"A Tesla Model Y was photographed in Florida sporting rooftop lidar sensors made by buzzy sensor manufacturer Luminar. The sighting caused a bit of a stir among Tesla watchers, given Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s well-established disdain for the laser sensors commonly used by autonomous vehicle companies to create 3D maps of their environment." says The Verge: "Tesla has reportedly entered a partnership with Luminar to use lidar for “testing and developing,” according to Bloomberg. What exactly this partnership entails we don’t know for sure — neither company is commenting. But it could point to some shortcomings in the technology Tesla is using to power its “Full Self-Driving” driver assist feature.  the Model Y was sporting a manufacturer’s license plate that is registered to Tesla in California. The same plate has been spotted on other Tesla vehicles, including a prototype of the Cybertruck." Or...it could be for validation of their vision-based system? https://www.theverge.com/2021/5/24/22451404/tesla-luminar-lidar-elon-musk-autonomous-vehicles TESLA HAS OVER 1 MILLION CYBERTRUCK RESERVATIONS"Tesla has already accumulated over 1 million Cybertruck reservations, according to the latest tally. The tally also keeps track of the different trims, and the mix has stayed consistent with 48% for the Dual Motor, 44.5% for the Tri Motor, and only 7.5% of reservation holders are ordering the base single-motor version." according to a crowdsourced tracker of VIN numbers says electrek:" Musk also warned that delays are possible as Tesla is still working on building Gigafactory Texas, where the Cybertruck is going to be produced, and the company would face challenges since the electric pickup truck is designed with an exoskeleton." https://electrek.co/2021/05/25/tesla-cybertruck-reservations-1-million-electric-pickup-trucks/ VW COULD MOVE TO ONLINE CAR SALES"VW Group boss Alex Smith has written to car dealers to tell them an agency sales model is being considered. Affecting dealers across the group’s brands – which include Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda – the letter says the group is planning to introduce an agency sales model for electric vehicles. This is thought to be a precursor to a wider roll out of agency sales across the VW Group on its other models." says Car Dealer MAgazine: "Agency models see car dealers paid a handling fee for dealing with new car sales.  The manufacturer sells the cars directly to consumers via its main website. In a leaked letter marked ‘highly confidential’, the manufacturer told its ‘investors’ that a retail agency model for battery electric vehicles (BEV) is being planned. It says the model will be introduced for VW, Skoda, Cupra, Seat VW Commercial and Audi." https://cardealermagazine.co.uk/publish/leaked-letter-reveals-vw-group-is-considering-an-agency-sales-model-across-its-brands/223770 OFGEM INVESTS £300M INTO EV CHARGE POINTS"The Office of Gas and Electricity Markets, also known as Ofgem, has invested £300m into expanding the UK’s electric vehicle (EV) charging network today, to push the pedal on the country’s low carbon future." according to CityAM: " 1,800 new charge points across motorway service areas and key trunk road spots. The investment will triple the current network, Ofgem said. Meanwhile, a further 1,750 charge points will be backed in towns and cities. Delivered by Britain’s electricity networks, the network investment marks a firm bid in the UK’s climate commitments ahead of hosting the UN’s flagship climate conference, COP26." https://www.cityam.com/ofgem-invests-300m-into-ev-charge-points-with-40bn-more-to-come/ PEUGEOT E-BOXER PRICED FROM £49,335 IN THE UKPEUGEOT has opened reservations for the new e-Boxer van, the brand’s largest full electric Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV). Available to order now, the PEUGEOT e-Boxer is available with two battery options and comes in three lengths to suit a variety of needs for both business and private users. Prices for the new PEUGEOT e-Boxer start from £49,335 (excluding VAT, after PiVG).The L2 length comes with a 37kWh unit, while L3 and L4 versions feature a larger, 70kWh battery. Both lithium-ion batteries are connected to a 90kW electric motor.73 miles or 139 miles. LARGEST ORDER OF ELECTRIC SCHOOL BUSES IN NORTH AMERICA"The largest student transportation provider in North America, First Student, recently placed the largest order of electric school buses with Lion Electric Company. " says Clean Technica: "Lion manufactures both all-electric medium- and heavy-duty urban vehicles, and together the two companies announced the order. First Student is ordering 260 all-electric LionC school buses. This is a huge win for fleet electrification and especially for the local kids since these new buses will not pollute the air students breathe as they board, deboard, and ride the buses like fossil fuel buses do." https://cleantechnica.com/2021/05/23/largest-order-of-electric-school-buses-in-north-america-placed-by-first-student/ JEEP WRANGLER 4XE PHEV CHEAPER TO LEASE THAN GAS-ONLY MODEL"Lease deals can be tricky and misleading. You have to read the fine print carefully. However, in the case of Jeep's current leasing incentive on the all-new Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid, it seems the deal is real, and it works out to be a much better value than the traditional gas-only Wrangler." writes InsideEVs: "Jeep is leasing the 2021 Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4xe for just $249 per month for 36 months with $3,999 due at signing. This rate is for California, but the deal is similar in other areas. For comparison, the gas-only Wrangler starts at less than $30,000. However, the cheapest lease deal on a Wrangler without a plug comes in at over $300 per month with about $4,000 down. This is for a Wrangler with an MSRP that's $11,000 less than the 4xe." https://insideevs.com/features/509263/jeep-wrangler-4xe-cheap-lease/ HYBRID-ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE USES A SUPERCAPACITOR TO BOOST ITS RANGE"French company Nawa plans to manufacture a prototype of its Racer hybrid motorcycle that uses a supercapacitor to bolster its range. The company says using a 9 kWh lithium battery could provide about 110 miles of range, but adding a proposed 0.1 kWh ultracapacitor would increase that to 180 miles as well as boost peak power output" says Inputmag.com: "Supercapacitors are batteries with high voltage limits that can fill and drain electricity quickly, faster than lithium-ion batteries found in electric vehicles. They’re large and expensive though.  Supercapacitors could act as a cushion, capturing more regenerative energy and also reducing stress on the main battery when the driver hits on the throttle." https://www.inputmag.com/tech/audi-is-testing-ev-charging-stations-that-store-energy-in-batteries-charged-overnight F-150 PRO EXTENDED RANGE PRICEArsTechnica picked up something I missed which was the price jump from 230 miles to 300 miles for the fleet-based F-150 Pro: "What we didn't know was how much of a premium Ford would charge for the extended-range version. This model is capable of about 300 miles on a single charge and will be supplied with a 240 V, 80 A charger (called the Charge Station Pro) that can fill the battery to 100 percent in eight hours. As it turns out, the electric pickup with the bigger battery will go on sale at $49,974 before incentives and tax credits." https://arstechnica.com/cars/2021/05/ford-reveals-pricing-for-the-f-150-lightning-pro-work-truck/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM Do you have an opinion on hydrogen power for personal transport? It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to a new PATREON PARTNER JULIETTE SODERGREN!   Weekend Long Reads   AN OBITUARY FOR THE INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE "Some 136 years ago, German engineer Carl Benz built the first motor car with an internal combustion engine. The ‘Benz Patent Motor Car’ – actually a trike, a three-wheeler – was powered by a single cylinder, four-stroke engine producing 0.74bhp." says Wired: "Ironically, the ICE may well go the same way as the horse; no longer an everyday means of transport, instead a plaything of the rich, paraded at special events and raced. In just a few decades, children will look at them, wonder at the smell of oils and fuels, and jump back when an open-piped V12 barks into life."   https://www.wired.co.uk/article/internal-combution-engine-obituary   ELECTROLYTE FORMULATIONS POINT TO NEXT-GEN BATTERIES "The stability and performance of lithium-oxygen batteries look set to be vastly improved with a tailored electrolyte that could herald the next generation of rechargeable batteries." says The Engineer: "The lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) battery (or lithium-air battery), consisting of Li-metal and a porous conductive framework as its electrodes, releases energy from the reaction of oxygen from the air and lithium. The burgeoning technology has the potential to provide much greater energy storage than a conventional lithium-ion battery."   https://www.theengineer.co.uk/electrolyte-lithium-air-batteries-liverpool-loughborough/   WHY NIO AND XPENG ARE MAKING A BEELINE FOR NORWAY "Norway is fast becoming Chinese electric car start-ups’ key export market. There’s a reason for that: it’s the world leader in terms of EV uptake" says the South China MOrning Post: "Penetration of EVs in Norway is the highest worldwide, with pure electric cars making up over 54 per cent of overall new car sales. In Norway, no purchase and import taxes are imposed on EVs.  Buyers are also exempt from paying a 25 per cent value-added tax.  NIO hopes its “battery as a service” (BaaS) model, which allows customers to buy an electric car while subscribing to a separate battery-leasing plan for a fee, will help it gain an advantage in Europe."   https://www.scmp.com/business/companies/article/3132514/why-chinese-electric-car-start-ups-nio-xpeng-are-making-beeline   GM CEO MARY BARRA TALKS CHEVY SILVERADO "There are still few details about the upcoming electric pickup truck, and we're not even sure if it will carry the Silverado name. We do know it will be built on GM's Ultium platform, and it may share some features and design with the GMC Hummer EV electric truck." repotrs InsideEVs: " Barra said there's already strong demand for the Silverado EV. More specifically, she referred to the "strong response from commercial and government owners as a lot of fleet customers are looking to have zero emission vehicles." Barra made it clear that GM is highly skilled at producing full-size trucks, so now it just has to fit those trucks with an EV powertrain."   https://insideevs.com/news/505995/mary-barra-talks-silverado-ev/     PLUG-IN MODELS NEARING 1 OF 10 NEW-VEHICLE SALES IN CALIFORNIA "Plug-in vehicles—including battery-electric cars, plug-in hybrids, and hydrogen fuel-cell cars—are nearing one in 10 new-car sales in California, according to a periodic update from industry group Veloz, referring to the latest data from the state." writes Green Car Reports: "Californians purchased 59,000 plug-in cars in the first quarter of 2021, accounting for more than a 9% market share for the quarter. The Tesla Model Y was the top-selling model in the state, at 15,265, with the Tesla Model 3 second, at 14,536. The Chevrolet Bolt EV was a distant third, at 5,252 units. The highest-ranked plug-in hybrid as the Toyota Prius Prime, in fourth place, at 4,081"   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1132176_plug-in-models-nearing-1-of-10-new-vehicle-sales-in-california   TESLA SUPERCHARGER NETWORK REACHES 25,000-CHARGER MILESTONE "Tesla’s Supercharger network has now reached a total of 25,000 chargers – a big milestone for the fast-charging network. The Supercharger network is really the only global network of fast-charging stations." says electrek: "At the end of 2020, Tesla had over 20,000 charging stalls at over 2,100 Supercharging stations around the world. Now just a few months later, Tesla announced that the automaker has now 25,000 Superchargers around the world. Those 25,000 Supercharger stalls are at just over 2,700 Supercharger stations. Tesla launched a new Twitter account called ‘Tesla Charging’ that shares every new charging station coming online"   ELECTRIC CAR INSURANCE IN UK IS CHEAPER "The average cost of insuring an electric car in the UK is £45 less than the cost of covering a petrol or diesel car, according to research from the website Comparethemarket.com. Analysis of annual premiums in the first three months of the year showed electric car drivers were charged an average of £566, while petrol and diesel drivers paid £611." according to The Guardian: "Dan Hutson, the head of motor insurance, at Comparethemarket.com, said the difference was explained by a range of factors, including electric cars having fewer complex moving parts to be damaged in an accident."   https://www.theguardian.com/money/2021/may/08/electric-car-insurance-in-uk-is-45-less-than-for-petrol-or-diesel-vehicle   CHINA'S EMISSIONS SURPASS ALL DEVELOPED NATIONS COMBINED " The distribution of global greenhouse gas emissions has reached an inflection point: China's emissions exceeded developed nations combined in 2019, a new Rhodium Group analysis concludes." says AXIOS: "Rhodium's Larsen notes China's per-capita rise stems from higher living standards, China's relatively fossil-intensive power mix and its export-focused manufacturing."   https://www.axios.com/china-emissions-ranking-0757dc71-ffdd-4236-af40-1da21e669061.html   THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE FREEDOM ACT COULD PUT BILLIONS INTO A NATIONWIDE EV CHARGING NETWORK "The Biden administration has made no secret that it is interested in pushing US transportation to an electric future, promising to spend vast sums of money on bringing electric vehicles into the US Government fleet as well as increasing the national EV charging infrastructure. It's a big deal." says CNET: " two members of Congress are pushing a new piece of legislation called the Electric Vehicle Freedom Act, and it goes even farther than President Biden's promises, according to a report published Wednesday by Automotive News. The Electric Vehicle Freedom Act seeks to build hundreds of thousands of electric-vehicle-charging stations around the US within five years and also seeks to shift government funding and tax breaks away from internal combustion vehicles and toward EVs"   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/best-leather-conditioner-for-cars/     QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS   MARK I have a small business and was using Google and Facebook ads to find customers. In January, I found Russian ads on my both my Facebook and Google ad accounts and they were charging my payment methods. Then they used my PayPal, credit card and two Visa bank debit cards to order stuff at best buy, eBay and on my Google Store. All of these accounts had different passwords and two factor authentication. So how much data will I be sharing? None.   ROBERT GRACE As to privacy and what driving info that I transmit back to the car manufacturer, the issue is quite important to me. Attached is an image of a Ford Mach-E's very granular privacy options, which I think quite good.  As you can see, you can completely disconnect if you want to, so that the only driving info collected is that required by NHTSA for crash recall.   KERNEL Giving up my data. Two thoughts: 1) I would want open-source evidence what data is collected and where it is stored. 2) I would want control to switch data sharing (and any associated benefits) on and off when I want   ANDY Compared to all the data my cell phone gathers, I don’t worry about my car knowing how I’m driving. My issue would come with any internal cameras and if those were recorded.   CARLING FROM CALIFORNIA I use Apple products because they have the power and size to stand up to attempts to access phones or cloud data, from law enforcement trying to strongarm into complying just because they want some data. But I don’t think a smaller car company would stand so firm, and I’m worried about how data could be misused if there was a record of where my car was.   TONY FROM BRISBANE I share my location from my phone to the rest of my family so they know where I am. I have no issue with my car being tracked as long as I own that data.   SUSAN CHAMPION As someone who drives a lot for a living I feel reassured that, should anything happen, there would be a record of where I am and what was happening around the car.   ROADIEDAVE Despite all the misbehaviour around diesel emission, I actually trust the established car companies to follow all the correct protocols and keep my user data private. We have seen so many times the Silicon Valley startups take the attitude of moving fast and breaking things, but going the extra mile for security can be forgotten in favour of rapid growth.   ELECTRIC LIMITS The question is where the car is made. Anything coming from China, regardless of where it’s sold, should be assumed will be programmed to send a certain amount of data back to Chinese powers. To assume anything is naïve and we’ve seen with mobile products over the years, software which sends info back to China when it goes online.     QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM   A recent survey – which I highly questioned and disagreed with – claimed 1 in 5 EV owners went back to piston power.  I have never heard anything like a 20% rate of EV drivers being unhappy with electric. Would you ever go back? Yes, No and tell me why!     Email me your thoughts and I’ll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com     It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK (PREMIUM PARTNER) eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PREMIUM PARTNER)     DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY FROM MILLBROOK COTTAGES – 5* GOLD SELF CATERING COTTAGES (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER) IAIN SEAR (PARTNER) JULIETTE SODERGREN (PARTNER)   ADRIAN BOND (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREW GREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDY NANCARROW AND LILIAN KASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BLUNDERBUSS JONES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRISTOPHER BARTH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DC EV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ED CORTREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERIC HANSEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEINRICH LIESNER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAVIER CARMELO DÍAZ PÉREZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JOHN SCHROEDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JOHN VAN DEVOORT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHANIEL FREEDMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAYMOND ROWLEDGE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROBERT GRACE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. The entire auto industry is having a terrible problem building cars and trucks right now. We'll tell you why in this episode of America on the Road. It is the first episode of our 25th year on the air, a mark we're proud of. We're also proud of the special guest we have for you this week. Cason Grover is the head of product planning at Mitsubishi. We'll be speaking to him about their all-new flagship vehicle, the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander, and he'll also tell us about another of their vehicle, the heavily modified 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is the brand's flagship, and it's all-new this year. In the road test segment co-host Chris Teague will not only tell us how tall he is (again) but he will also tell us what it's like to live with the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV for a week in Maine. Is the state infrastructure up to the task of keeping the car topped up with electrons? We'll tell you the answer. The 2021 Toyota CH-R now comes in a Nightshade Edition, and we tested it this week. Also in the road test portion of the program, host Jack Nerad will tell all about a vehicle that defies classification. Is the 2021 Toyota CH-R Nightshade a sports coupe, a hatchback, a crossover…or a deadly poison? We'll give you our answer during this week's show. Listen to our exclusive interview with Chevy Bolt's Chief Engineer

The vehicles, which are expected to go on sale this summer, are like siblings: the pair […]
