Craft beer's evolution includes a spectrum of new and mindful choices. This episode captures the vibrant atmosphere of the fifth installment of Little Beer, a festival held in Duluth, Georgia celebrating lower-gravity brews such as English Ales and Lagers. In this bonus episode we chat with industry leaders there who understand the need for a full spectrum of beverage options to meet the changing needs of today's consumer. First up, two members of Asheville, North Carolina-based Burial Beer share details of their various beverage programs, and their hometown's post-hurricane resilience. Next, Jon Eberhart of Resident Culture unpacks their thriving THC program, which along with their award-winning NA series, NARC, offers consumers a new set of options. We close with a brief conversation with Halfway Crooks co-founder Shawn Bainbridge, who goes into detail on how they made their Brevet Pils NA, as well as the critical importance of maintaining safety in non-alcoholic brewing. Burial Beer Company's Doug Reiser discusses the culmination of a three-year project to open a rooftop wine bar for the company's Visuals wine brand in Asheville, North Carolina. For Burial, it's about creating “immersive experiences” at its venues, Reiser explains. He discusses reviving once-abandoned spaces, how the company got into beer and then moved into the wine space and how much overlap there is between the company's beer drinkers and wine consumers. But first, Jess, Zoe and Justin also discuss the key pieces Anchor Brewing is going to need in its resurrection. They also discuss the effectiveness of Brooklyn Brewery's European ad campaign, and pour over Voodoo Ranger's scans trends, with some brands in decline and others still on the ascent.
In our first-ever N/ATION road trip, we headed to the mountain mecca of craft beer in the east, Asheville, North Carolina. In this two-part episode we first chatted with Jason Pedrick, owner of NoLo, Asheville's non-alcoholic bottle shop that was the first of its kind to open in the Southeast in 2021. In our conversation Jason gave us his perspective on the N/A movement in the city, where bottle shops like his may fit into future growth in the category, and what participation he'd love to see from the craft beer community locally. In the second-part of our episode we sat down with Doug Reiser, COO and Co-Founder of Burial Beer, Asheville's first (and currently only) local brewery to produce an N/A beer. Doug explained why Burial felt it was a priority to get into N/A, what it's done for both their customers and employees, and his thoughts on the role Asheville might play in the movement going forward.
For this episode of Songs of Our Lives, I invite Burial Beer Company and Visuals Wine's Tim Gormley on the show. We get deep into the origins of Burial and the ways music inspired them then and continues to as the brand grows into new spaces (they've just opened a music venue in Asheville called Eulogy). It was an interesting conversation about the ways music shapes so many of the things we do. The beer scene is rife with personalities, but Burial Beer co-founder Tim Gormley in a category all his own. He's constantly coming up with new ideas – and often – the weirder, the better. We're going to talk about his latest venture into wine, but first we'll tap into his early life. Because from past to present, music has been an inextricable part of Tim's identity and his approach to fermented beverage-making.
Pookie and Jackjohn are back with a brand episode and some brand new beers! The guys sample beers from Burial Beer and Metazoa Brewing! This week, we had the absolute pleasure of catching up with one of the most intrepid minds in fermentation, Vince Tursi!Alongside buddy-turned-business partner Mike Semenac, Vince is a co-founder/owner of DSSOLVR Beverage Co., located within the esteemed utopia of Asheville, NC. Their brewery - which fired up its system for the first time almost exactly 12 months ago - has experienced quite the rookie year, as most of it has unfolded inside a pandemic. We dive into that whirlwind of an experience and learn of the patently inspiring ways DSSOLVR has made the most out of an objectively shitty situation and the positive, long-term paradigm shifts COVID-induced reflection has kickstarted within the business. We also trace through Vince's impressive industry resume, and he delineates how his respective stints at Night Shift, Lord Hobo Brewing, Burial Beer, and The Whale Bar have helped mold his approach to brewing and business ownership. The conversation takes an unexpected turn a little over halfway through, when decides to take the interviewer reigns, which leads to a discussion about management that was equal measures surprising as it was enjoyable. Last, not least, and certainly not all; we talk about brewing with crickets, make a case for pizza beer, and celebrate the surreal with a proper amount reverie surrounding the infamous Tim and Eric's Awesome Show Great Job. We haven't laughed as much in an episode since a profession comedian graced the show back in April, and yet we may also have never participated in this level of real-time reflection with a guest. If you're reading this, you known you can listen in now, so go ahead and do what you know this weird, weird universe wants you to do. .................................. ..................................................... This week's episode of Beer Sessions Radio is all about trademark issues in the beer industry. Joining Jimmy and Anne in the studio are lawyers Brendan Palfreyman from Syracuse and Jordan Greenberger from right here in Brooklyn. Later, Doug Reise from Burial Beer and Reiser Legal calls in to share his own legal expertise.
Keith Laguna and Angelica Caporuscio, owners of Tonic MRKT in the Asheville Outlet Mall, join us for episode #0021. Tommy Green gets drunk pounding New Holland Dragons Milk in stupor awe of this incredible couple and their story, while Crowler skillfully manages the interview. Tonic MRKT is the only bottle shop and craft beer bar in an outlet mall in the nation. The ALE and ABC of North Carolina gave approval for Tonic MRKT to allow its customers to walk out their door drinking beer and go shopping throughout the mall.
Owner Mike Weeks and brewer Jeremy Bruder drink local now with us for episode #0020 at their Fifth Season Gardening hydroponic and homebrew store on Tunnel Road in East Asheville. Find out about the oldest bar tab in the World and horse blanket on the flavor wheel (ref: cat piss #0016). “More esoteric styles of beer are on the horizon and less innovation,” postulates Jeremy. Local hops growning in the mountains of Western North Carolina, Mexican hops, Australian hops, and Sierra Nevada’s trademark ownership of a specific type of hop are cheery topics of discourse. Though tropical plants are the big sellers at Fifth Season, we go for the great craft beer on tap and their all-gender bathrooms.
