We had the pleasure of interviewing Nina Nesbitt over Zoom video!Singer-songwriter and producer and multi-instrumentalist, Nina Nesbitt releases her new album, Mountain Music. From exceeding a billion streams to being championed by Taylor Swift and playing shows with everyone from Coldplay to Stevie Nicks, Nina's career has taken her from highlight to highlight. Yet the release of her new album could well be the most significant moment to date. Not only is it a record that leans into an accomplished and engaging new sound, but it's also the first release via her new independent label Apple Tree Records.Mountain Music is a record in which authenticity flows through every moment. Its impetus was a moment of crisis: Nina had become overwhelmed by the need to be always active on social media and realized it was a huge distraction from her songwriting. So instead, she paused and went back to basics. What emerged was a set of songs which were informed, in part by the two years she spent touring the States in support of her second studio album: the critically acclaimed The Sun Will Come Up, The Seasons Will Change, and partly by the Americana and US folk music that she has always loved. Their narratives also became more personal than ever. She reflected on everything that has happened in her life: growing up in a small Scottish village, breaking into music while living in the bustle of London, and now looking back at all of her life experiences from her new home in the countryside. While it might sound strange that Nesbitt was drawn to the music of Appalachia, heard echoing through the vast, verdant mountain ranges of the eastern United States, it makes more sense when you consider how traditional Scottish ballads and hymns are threads in that rich tapestry.Speaking about the new album, Nina Nesbitt reveals, “'Mountain Music' feels like the most authentic and honest piece of work I've created so far. I was inspired by a lot of the American folk music I grew up listening to, and revisiting it made me fall back in love with writing music again. I knew I wanted to take inspiration but to also write my own story. This album celebrates that small town girl, puts an arm around the big city twenty-something and looks back at the view with me now from the calm and the quiet. ‘Mountain Music' held my hand through some of my hardest moments and I hope it can hold yours too.”The album's organic, resonant feel also comes from a recording process which placed a sharper focus on the importance of live performances. Accompanied by a band of musicians, Peter Miles and Nina produced sessions at Middle Farm Studios in South Devon in the UK, with Peter completing the record with mixing and mastering. That sound is today further showcased as Nina shares the new Mountain Music Session performance of the album's closing track, “Parachute,” a swaying, romantic ballad that also addresses her introvert tendencies. Accompanied by a five-piece band, Nina leads a song which steadily grows in stature from sparse piano into a dramatic crescendo of sound. She's visibly lost within the moment, channeling her emotions into an affecting song which charts the self-doubt that she had prior to starting the album.Having recently enjoyed a big spotlight moment when she performed at Team Great Britain's Homecoming show live on BBC One to over 2 million viewers, and having just completed a dream tour as special guest to Stevie Nicks earlier this year, Nina plans to hit the road next month for a UK headline tour. For a list of upcoming tour dates, please visit ninanesbittmusic.com.Stay tuned for more music and live dates, coming soon!We want to hear from you! Thursday, July 18, would be a short day of work for operator Josh Gentry, starting at a leisurely 10 a.m. in Fort Payne, Alabama, outside the Quality Inn in town. There, Gentry met Overdrive Radio host Todd Dills to get rolling, the pair starting the day in Gentry's Chevrolet en route to the site of an old auto dealership in town that, since the mid-1980s, has been the home base of the fan club for longtime country-rock group Alabama. It's also home base for the group's tour truck, in which Gentry was about to set out on a run. Josh Gentry is son of one of the last two founding members in the band, bassist and harmony singer Teddy Gentry. Josh, after years pursuing music himself, then hauling grain around his home region (some of those years as an owner-operator), today serves as hauler of Alabama's touring operation, moved in a single truck and 48-foot Great Dane show trailer emblazoned with the band's insignia and the "Roll On II North America Tour" logo. That truck, a 2021 Kenworth T680 detailed in this week's podcast, rekindles an old partnership between the Alabama group and the Kenworth company, dormant after an official farewell tour in the early part of this century. As you'll hear on this run to Nashville to load in for Alabama's July 19 show at Bridgestone arena, Kenworth's relationship with the band tracks back to the 1980s, when the tour operation was as many as four trucks and trailers, and the band was at the height of its popularity with big hits like "Mountain Music," "Tennessee River" and, yes, the classic "Roll On (18 wheeler)," in past named by Overdrive readers in the top five for best trucking song of all time: https://www.overdriveonline.com/channel-19/article/14875984/these-are-the-top-10-trucking-songs-of-all-time Gentry's come full circle with his growing involvement in the tour operation, after a childhood spent enamoured by all things trucking and immersed in his father's band's music. Despite that long history, though, there's still opportunity for new experiences. By 11 a.m. Thursday last week he and Dills were pulling out with a lightly loaded trailer toward the Soundcheck facility's docks to pick up more gear situated a very-short haul across the river from downtown. As the truck and trailer merged onto I-59 toward Chattanooga from Ft. Payne that morning, just as Dills readying his audio recorder for the talk with Gentry, a voice came over the radio -- "Roll on, Alabama!" -- invoking the classic trucking song. Gentry called tour manager Jeff Davis to mark the moment and give him an update on progress toward Nashville for load and staging. Yet the over-the-air atta-boy wasn't the very first bit of attention the wrapped truck and trailer have gotten over going on two years Gentry's been guiding the tour, taking him as far as, most recently, North Dakota and into Manitoba and elsewhere in Canada. Dive into Josh Gentry's trucking history and otherwise in this first episode featuring Overdrive's talk with the operator, the principal interests of his life to date all coming together now in live entertainment hauling with the family business. Catch more views of the truck and trailer, and from the Friday, July 19, live show in Nashville here: https://www.overdriveonline.com/overdrive-radio/podcast/15680069/roll-on-alabama-ft-paynenashville-with-trucker-josh-gentry Find all episodes of Overdrive Radio via https://overdriveonline.com/overdrive-radio

Logan and Walker catch up on a magnificent two weeks of college football and revel in the Dawgs once again being No. 1. And good luck surviving the weekend, Boone, NC.
As bands go, Anna & Elizabeth have quite the origin story. Anna & Elizabeth began thanks to a broke down car and a shared desire to explore the traditions of Appalachian roots music. The immersive, intimate combination of Elizabeth LaPrelle's deep mountain voice (from Virginia), Anna Roberts-Gevalt's modern one (from Vermont), their sweet harmonies, and minimalist arrangements is striking. The duo's latest record, The Invisible Comes to Us, co-produced by Anna and Benjamin Lazar Davis (avant-pop outfit Cuddle Magic), draws on old-time traditions of home, porch, and kitchen music, and incorporates experimental pedal steel player Susan Alcorn and drummer Jim White (The Dirty Three), along with electronic elements. It brings Anna & Elizabeth to play some of these sparse, haunting ballads, stories, and lullabies for us, in-studio. Watch "Black Eyed Susan": Watch "Jeano" : Watch "Odd Kimball":

Down the Road on the Blue Ridge Music Trails of North Carolina
The Bascom Lamar Lunsford Mountain Music Festival is the only one that Lunsford allowed to carry his name. In 1928, Lunsford started the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival in Asheville as part of the annual Rhododendron Festival. The festival was such a hit that the local newspaper declared it should be an annual event. The Mountain Dance and Folk Festival is the oldest continuing festival in the nation and became a model for the National Folk Festival and other festivals that followed.

Actors often fixate on goals.Getting on Broadway. Booking a lead role on a hit TV show. Landing a national commercial. But are you looking at goals all wrong? In today's interview, I talk with former Broadway music director and musician, Boko Suzuki.Boko has seen a lot during his 30+ years of playing and conducting worldwide and he thinks most performers don't know or have forgotten WHY they got into this industry to begin with. During this open & honest conversation, Boko and I talk about: The importance of knowing your why as a performer but also they 'why behind your why'Getting out of the box & figuring out who you really are as a performerAnd why getting on Broadway isn't a goal...and what it is insteadFinding fulfillment in work beyond the stageIn his previous life, Boko served as music director for Rent on Broadway and national tours of Wicked, Mamma Mia! and Swing! as well as many shows in Canada and in regional theatre. Boko is also a Z-Health® exercise therapy specialist and a National Academy of Sports Medicine and C.H.E.K. Institute certified personal trainer and the owner of Suzuki Exercise therapy. Former Simple Minds band member Mike Ogletree talks about finding his Scottish (and African) music traces in the Smoky Mountains and Scots-Irish Cultural traditions.Tune in for this fun conversation at TalkRadio.nyc or watch the Facebook Livestream by clicking here.Show NotesSegment 1Joseph Franklyn McElroy's family has been in the Smokies for over two hundred years. Joseph is interviewing Mike Ogletree, best known for his work in new wave bands such as Fiction Factory and Simple Minds. He currently living in the Smoky Mountains exploring the Scottish roots of Appalachian music. Joseph recommends that any interested viewer should read Wayfaring Strangers: The Musical Voyage from Scotland and Ulster to Appalachia, which has a forward by Dolly Parton who is a cousin of his. Joseph explains the geographic and cultural connection of Scotland to the Appalachian Trail. Early Scotch-Irish immigrants brought their musical traditions, mostly folk musical instruments like fiddles and rudimentary guitars. With the added influence of West Africans and the Cherokee and new subgenre became prominent in Appalachia known as bluegrass. In the McElroy family's establishment, the Meadowlark Motel, Mike is the artist in residence and has introduced a music program. As a self taught musician was influenced by the Cajun style band called The Meters. He was also interested in traditional Scottish music as well as popular rock.Segment 2For Mike it was a challenge not to migrate due to his adventurous nature and he welcomed the challenge. Mike first came to California and worked at a film studio then moved to New York. While successful, his biggest challenge was moving from a small town environment to the city which is sustainable but the life of a musician can bring you down. Mike was still looking forward to a change. Mike and Joseph met at the General Society of Mechanics & Tradesmen of The City Of New York. They were instrumental in moving the Alexander Hamilton house to a national park. While in New York he became friends with many Scottish people and discovered that there was a strong interest in his culture and history. He was asked to perform at the Burns Supper. As a fan of Robert Burns, setting his poetry to music was not a challenge. While doing so, Mike discovered Scottish Reggae. Mike performed the famous love poem A Red Red Rose by Robert Burns. He explains that the beat is what makes it reggae.Segment 3After losing his wife, Mike decided to stay in the Rockies because to him it is like a fantasy Scotland. He'd go off by himself in the woods after school and have dreams of his freedom and liberty. When Mike came to the mountains he discovered the place he dreamed of in the woods. In the mountains he enjoys hiking to waterfalls, enjoying the scenery and visiting the Maggie Valley Bird Sanctuaries. Mike's musical education began with the music of the south so he was familiar with the heritage. He learned about the African American influence then began listening to Scottish music so he could understand the influence. He discovered that many musicians brought jigs and Scottish music to the mountains, which would later evolve into the fiddling style you hear in Bluegrass. Mike plays another song, Man of Sorrow by Bob Dylan. Mike and Joseph reflect on the sense of community held in both the Rockies and Scotland as well as the straightforwardness of the people. Joseph recalls that while growing in the Smoky Mountains he people would gather with instruments and make music. It was a spontaneous environment where anyone could playSegment 4Every Saturday night Mike does a live music show at the Meadowlark Motel. He welcomes walk-in musicians to share their mountain and he will share Scottish songs with them in return. Even during this pandemic there are opportunities to hear live music. The Fairground has been doing drive in concerts with bluegrass and country musicians. Many musicians don't have anywhere to play so they are grateful to be playing outdoors. Mike has a website that is a nod to his black and Scottish culture called the blexcotsman.com. He can also be found on the Meadowlark Motel's Facebook page because they livestream his performances.
No music, no voices, just the sound of a valley halfway up a Tasmanian Mountain. This soundscape is full of birds and breeze echoing backwards and forwards across a reservoir.
First of all, let me say what a class act Jeff Cook is. On Monday April 20th I had the honor of interviewing Jeff and he was awesome!! (You rock, Jeff!) We talked about everything from the never-to-be-repeated success of the country and southern rock band Alabama to the roots of the band back in the 70's when they were called WildCountry!! Check out the podcast for all the stories. Jeff even talked about the challenges the band faced as they skyrocketed up the charts! Just to put it into perspective… in their career they had more than 40 number one hits and sold more than 73-million records!!! With hits like Christmas in Dixie, The Closer You Get and Mountain Music they were a staple on the “cassette” shelf…LOL.
October 18 Cappy's, Buns, and Bow TiesThe band gets a rude awakening when Lee sees that the band's name on the Cappy's marquee for October 18 and 19. The band was practicing for the following week (the 25th). We work with the owner, and he ends up putting us on after a Male review called “California Hunks” (from Columbus Ohio). The band waits in the back as men are not allowed in the bar as a group of 70 or so women fondle and paw at the loincloth-wearing pieces of meat. Dave starts off the night on stage with his Ted Nugent imitation, “Mercy mercy, I've died and gone to heaven, I'm playin' to a bar full of horny woman.” This evokes a “Dave!?” from Kevin. The women were sloshed. We were even joined on stage by a drunken wench that the band affectionately referred to as Bambi. She had brown hair and weighed about 45 pounds. As she jumped up on stage and began to wiggle and jiggle, John gave her a “bump” and shot-putted her halfway across the stage. Dave joined John in using Bambi as a human ping pong ball. During Bubba Hyde, Dave was doing the famous James Brown arrangement. He went out and “bumped” with Bambi. As they boogied back to back, Dave realizes that if he moves too quick Bambi is gonna end up on the floor. When he finally maneuvers to get away, Dave feels an arm come over his shoulder as Bambi tires to keep him on the dance floor. Dave does a spin move and catapults himself back to the safe haven of the stage (Glad to get back with his life intact).Later during a break, Bambi helped herself to a microphone. At this point, Dave went up on stage and said enough is enough. Later Bambi would try to get a whole sentence out to explain that she want's us to sing “Bappy Hirthday.” Later John witnesses as Bambi's female traveling partner bites her tit on the dance floor. The owner explains that things were getting a little overheated in the parking lot.The band has a blast, but without a sound check, they don't sound as sharp as usual out front. Chucky works out the bugs, but the stage volume is too loud and again, the monitors are almost useless. Dave has an extremely hard time hearing his backup vocals. When he does hear them, they're pretty rough. The band performs 3 new songs. These were My Maria, Daddy's Money, and On a Good Night (show opener).Saturday has the band moving the board to a new spot. In the process, the band's sound clears up and it sounds awesome! The band turns down their stage volume, and the monitors are heard loud and clear. Unfortunately, it's sweetest day, and the crowd is beyond shy. The band is treated to the pleasure of asking someone to turn off the jukebox. Dave tries to get a giggle by insinuating that Madonna has a venereal disease and that's why she had a cesarean delivery of her child (he refrains from making a joke about finding missing super bowl rings). Unfortunately Ernie the DJ is short on CD's and asks the band to play a little longer sets. Hmm... the band enters the lovely land of improvisation on stage. They pull off a version of Boot-Scootin' Boogie that must have lasted almost 10 minutes. Kevin was like a quarterback calling plays at the line of scrimmage. As he announces “Extended version” in the middle of Watermelon Crawl. The band pulls a few songs off the “Left-over” list, and realize why most of them are on the list in the first place (they suck). Dave accidentally cuts Ain't nothin Wrong with the Radio in half as he puts the solo in the wrong place. However, in hindsight, this was probably a blessing. The band can't believe the dead quiet after each song. The band would hammer out the final chords of a song, end it with a thunderous crunch and then you would hear the chirping of crickets in the back corner of the bar.Dave receives a job offer to join a band that is playing out 2 times a month. I think they were called Southern Exposure or something. Anyway, he takes the guy's number just to be polite. He has no intention of leaving the band.During one break Dave accidentally steps in a puddle of drool that has formed around the soundboard as Chucky has his eye on a lovely brunette. As a slow song starts, Dave prods Chucky to “go for it,” and sure enough Chuck shoots and scores. Unfortunately, Chucky was too busy to running sound to apply the needed pressure to court this fine vixen, and she ended up sitting by another guy. Chucky definitely gets an “A” for effort.Even though the crowd was dead (they did come alive by the third set), the band has a lot of fun. The joy of making up a set list on stage is interesting to say the least. The band fields requests to play some songs twice, so they do. The band was even joined by the Ernie the DJ for If Tomorrow Never Comes. Ernie wasn't bad at all, and puts a lot of emotion into his singing. The band is hounded to do some Lynard Skynard both nights and asks a patron what song they should do. He answers “Sweet Home Alabama.” He also wants to hear Mountain Music by the group ALABAMA. In all, it was a pretty fun gig. As John put it, “I had very low expectations coming in, and left very glad we did the gig.”October 23: Operation Steel Your Keyboard PlayerDave calls the guy from the band Southern Heart. Here's the scoop on them.• They've been apart for a while and are now reforming ( a little different from the “we're playing out twice a month” story at the bar).• The lead singer is the drummer. They think you should bring your kids to practice.• They play the Eagles, Seager, etc... (I'm sure they do Keep Your hands to Yourself by the Georgia Satellites).Dave sets it up with Randy to come over and play this Sunday. Dave explains how Six Shooter is a tight band, and he will not be leaving unless the singer (Kevin) moves to Montana (a possibility). Randy says he doesn't care. He just wants Dave to hear them. Dave figures, what can it hurt? While he's there he may just mention how Six Shooter is looking for a keyboardist.October 25: Kevin QuitsDave calls Kevin to see about getting his amp for the Southern Heart tryout thing. Dave is explaining how he wants to go check an Akron bar called “The Shamrock.” In doing so, Kevin feels he must tell Dave something.Kevin announces how lately things just haven't been much “fun.” He explains the constant worries about equipment failure, the strain of screaming over a stage volume that could destroy any pigeons flying in close proximity of the speakers, the negative attitude of John during the latest gig, the tardiness of some of the band members, and a general lack of drive is making the band situation a poor return on investment. Playing on stage is fun, but that's about the only thing that is anymore.Dave interrupts as he has been played the fool with this speech before. Only this time Kevin is not pulling his leg. Kevin hates to do this over the phone, but he doesn't want Dave pimping a singer-less band. Dave tries to use a salesman tactic to identify objections and asks, “If we fixed the sound system and worked on our stage volume (yata yata yata) would you stay? To this Kevin says “No, its just not fun.” According to the limited sales training Dave has received, this is supposed to reveal that their is another objection that has not been voiced. Hmmmmm....While Dave will miss singing with Kevin. Dave tends to agree with many of Kevin's points. The band has been a disappointment in some ways. We've never been too efficient in learning songs. It will be very strange to be in this band without Kevin. Dave doesn't put too much effort in trying to talk Kevin out of his decision. Dave knows that Kevin wouldn't say this without putting some thought into it.Upon hanging up the phone Dave is not sure how to feel. He can't be mad at Kevin. As a friend, Dave wouldn't want Kevin to do something he no longer enjoyed. In a selfish way, Dave is not happy about being put in the situation of finding a replacement. It's very strange. John and Dave had discussed this earlier in the week at lunch. Apparently ,John had picked up a vibe from Kevin. John announced that if Kevin ever left, he'd just call his buddy Dan (whom he explains is a real pain to work with at times) and form his old rock band. Dave isn't really big on the idea. Without being an egomaniac, Dave feels he is talented enough to hold down the role of lead guitarist. Consequently, a band with Dan would probably not include Dave.Kevin is going to wait to tell John, so Dave can't call John and say “Holy shit Kevin quit!” Dave ponders the thought of joining a blues band (something he's always wanted to front). Dave isn't really worried. He'll examine his options, and choose the best one.
