Today's a very special episode. It's not often we get to celebrate Sweden National Day on the same day as an episode. But that's not all, it's also Martin's 400th episode. Of course something this special had to have special beers and special friends to join. We called in our beer nerd friends and we get busy celebrating. We have two from Eighth State Brewing. Rouge in Exile is a collab with Burial Beer Co. It's an imperial stout that was aged in bourbon barrels for two years then had dates, caramel, coconut, vanilla and cocoa nibs added. YUM! After that we opened a bottle of We Can Walk. This is a much simpler beer. It's just an imperial stout with ton of toasted coconut. We were in coconut heaven. Congrats to Sweden and congrats to Martin on this special day. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #imperialstout #pastrystout
DreZ went to Raleigh to see Death Cab For Cutie and The Postal Service he also made a stop at the Burial Beer Co. and brought back some good brews to share! #BrewsdayTuesdaySee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The city of Asheville may not even be in the top ten most-populated cities in North Carolina, but it might be the state's capital for breweries. Thanks to the generosity of listeners Benji and Suzanne, we drink five beers from Asheville (and the surrounding area) that represent a wide amount of styles - and Craig is absolutely giddy about a secret Chicagoland connection to one. Also, Craig has found a secret bag that is oddly fortuitous; Ryan's taking a week off to put on bread weight; and we'd like a spritz of that Red Vine Perfume, please. Beers Reviewed Hillman Beer - Old Fort Original (American Lager) Zillicoah Beer Company - Bo Pils (Open-fermented Czech-style Pilsner) Cellarest Beer Project - Marakio (India Pale Lager fermented in a cherrywood foedre) Burial Beer Co. (w/ Cloudwater Brew Co.) - A Compilation of Sporadic Contemplations From Minds Unraveled (Imperial stout w/ toasted coconut, fresh orange zest, and cocoa butter) Whistle Hop Brewing Company - Ilaria (Mezcal barrel-aged smoked peach Lichtenhainer)
Barry, Abigail, and special guest Lory Willard discuss RKS by Rainbow Kitten Surprise and sample Lime Agave from Ginger's Revenge in Asheville, North Carolina; Cheerwine Ale from NoDa Brewing Company in Charlotte, North Carolina; Blue Ridge Haze from Boojum Brewing Co. in Waynesville, North Carolina; and Dreamhuntress from Burial Beer Co. in Asheville, North Carolina. Shout out to the staff at Tobacco Road Burley & Brew for suggesting several of the beers we sampled today, and many others still sitting in our fridges! Ginger's Revenge created a character for each of their four core beers. Meet the members of the band and check out each of their customized Spotify playlists! The band Rainbow Kitten Surprise is from Boone, home of Booneshine Brewing Company! You can hear our review of several Booneshine beers on Bellyshine (Jellyfish and Booneshine Brewing Co.). Meet the members of Rainbow Kitten Surprise! As a comparison to Cold Love, Barry played a sample of Homeless by Paul Simon and Ladysmith Black Mambazo off of Paul Simon's Graceland. You can hear our review of Graceland on Bar'nSider (Paul Simon & Barn Door Ciderworks). Cheerwine Ale is a collaboration between NoDa Brewing and Cheerwine! You can hear more about this beer during an episode of Beer Guys Radio featuring Chad Henderson, NoDa's co-founder and head brewer. Up next… Screemers Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. Barry and Abigail discuss We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. by Jason Mraz and sample Lucky Strikes, Echoes of Sacrificial Voices, and Basking In the Glow from Petty Thieves Brewing Co. in Charlotte, North Carolina. We want to thank Barry's college and medical school colleague, Dr. Michael McCrohan, for helping us obtain this fabulous beer, and for his “contribution to the arts.” Lucky Strikes is a collaboration with Cabarrus Brewing Co in Concord, North Carolina. The names of the beers we sampled today reminded Abigail of the names of the beers we sampled at Burial Beer Company in Asheville, North Carolina: Prophetmaker, A Canvas of Fragmented Memoirs, A Space For Sacrilege, and Of A Fading Season. Listen to our full episode at Burial, Consumers of the Barley (The Raconteurs and Burial Beer Co.). We make a lot of comparisons to Andy Grammer by Andy Grammer, which we reviewed in our episode Mind Your Grammer (Andy Grammer and Deadwords Brewing). Watch one of the TikToks Abigail referenced poking fun at artists including “raw audio” in their songs. Your Love is My Drug by Kesha is a great example of this phenomenon. Lucky features Colbie Caillat, whose song I Do appears on our family playlist of favorite love songs from 2011. Abigail's choice on that playlist was The Bird and the Worm by Owl City, and Barry's was Maybe I'm Amazed by Paul McCartney. Abigail contends that Butterfly is no more explicit than Swimming In Your Ocean by Crash Test Dummies. Listen to our full discussion of Crash Test Dummies, Pops Shuffled His Feet (Crash Test Dummies and Toll Road Brewing). Details in the Fabric features James Morrison. We shared a little bit of his song Under the Influence. Up next… Four by Blues Traveler Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition. Hark Listener! Paul Gonzalez is here to talk about his hobby of writing independent movie reviews. You can read them by friending him on Facebook and you can follow him on Instagram. Topics this week include: Paul convinces me to try a new intro and it's so much better. What Ya Playing? (a recurring theme of the show). Movies aren't the first thing that Paul reviewed and the lead singer from Otep will probably send us an angry email. Irresponsible fathers allowing kids to watch R rated movies way to young (another recurring theme of the show). Everyone should see Battle Royale and Oldboy. What got you to do the first movie review? Dear Hollywood, use practical effects. The rules of writing reviews. Oscar Talk and what a Best Picture should be. Dear America, quit paying to see the same stupid stuff over and over again. Marisa Tomei is forever hot. Paul reveals his favorite horror franchise. Stop watching bad syndicated TV shows. MOR-TAL KOM-BAT!!! The worst thing that Paul has reviewed. If you haven't seen Sleepaway Camp, go watch it so we don't ruin it for you. Balling out and renting movie theaters. The future of Paul's reviews. Beers for this episode include "Until There is No Longer" IPA by Burial Beer Co, "#blessed" NEIPA by Streetside Brewery, "Shady When I Strut" DIPA by Short Throw Brewing Co, and "Head Hunter" IPA by Fat Head's Brewery.

Feeling overworked?! Between trying to get ahead at your 9-5 and pursuing side hustles, chances are really high that you feel like your work-life balance is out of whack. That doesn't even take into account that more of us are working from home. We find ourselves chronically fatigued and exhausted because we give too much to our work, leaving little left for ourselves and those around us who we love. For instance, as a result most Americans don't take all their vacation time- and when they do, they find it impossible to actually stop working! This ongoing cycle of never-ending work is leading more folks than ever to despise the work they once loved while other important areas in their lives like relationships, health, and hobbies continue to suffer. This is an important topic for us to cover as we seek to implement some practices to restore that work-life balance and then create boundaries to maintain that balance. During this episode we enjoyed an I Learned It by Watching You by Burial Beer Co and Other Half Brewing - a big thanks to our friends Waffles on Wednesday for donating this collaboration beer to the show. And if you enjoyed this episode, be sure to subscribe and give us a quick review in Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks google docs, I'm sure Griff wrote something interesting, but instead this is what you get. They gather in a place, they fill a space, they are words, they are no such words. Eternity of days grind lead us to a hindrance of once belonging as our forefathers look on at the imagination of machinists. Forgive those who hark of yesteryear, as the hungry only feed at night, in Laura's house making statements of bluster. Lorem ipsum this should be, nonsense we draw for ears. - show notes in the style Burial Beer Co.

We catch up with the machine David Paul Seymour who was part of our first 4 pack going all the way back to Episode 2. David's labels are a key part of the amazing beer and brewery that is Burial - who's got some of the Skillet Donut for me?! So good. From the beginning this episode has resonated with me because of his story and career path from Accountant to Rock Posters and Labels. He did what he loved and through support of family took his shot and here we are today. It is one of the stories about the journey and passion that has resonated with me since day 1. The man loves music and is doing what he loves on the daily with bands and beer. His project Planet of Doom is getting closer to the finish line and I couldn't be more excited for him and the team. It is a true example of hard work and creating something literally from nothing. I look forward to Planet Doom Fest in the future. This episodes are a great way to catch up with these individuals who have impacted my life and made me believe in something that wasn't real and just an idea. The story of DPS is one that I mention a lot when talking with others both on and off the pod and I know it inspires many to go for their passion. Nothing is guaranteed but you also can't live life full of regrets. Check this episode and all of Season 16 on YouTube. Like subscribe and share or whatever else is possible. Be safe.
Chris is back this week and he brought some goodies back from Asheville for us because we Venmo bombed him after he left. We tried a lot of tasty stuff all except for most of the Wicked Weed because they put corks under their caps and we were dumb and didn't have a corkscrew.Kevin, who joins us again, tried to use some of his West Side Cincinnati know-how and open a bottle with a variety of tools such as a hammer, a pair of vice grips, a screw, and more! Also joining us this week for the very first time is Jeff, a co-owner and CFO of the place we don't all work at!Buckle up this show gets a little crazy. Also, this is the first show that we've done with more than 4 people on our ghetto setup. We hope the audio comes out ok. On this week's episode, Dan Quinn is still the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons despite a historically disappointing 0-4 start for the Dirty Birds. However, Atlanta plays the Carolina Panthers this weekend so we talk about that too, as well as how they would still (somehow!) be in contention to win the NFC East if they were in that division. We also discuss the Bears' gut-wrenching loss to the Indianapolis Colts despite Nick Foles getting the start for Chicago. Next up for the Monsters of the Midway is Tom Brady and the Bucs at home on Thursday Night Football. Nabeel details how badly the Bears need to get back to winning and just how they're going to be able to do it. This episode also covers the MLB Playoffs (go Braves!), the Cubs after a year with David Ross, why the Lakers have the advantage in the rest of the NBA Finals, and what Roger Goodell needs to do ASAP to ensure we have a complete NFL season this year. Our 2020 football preview! We look at the COVID-19 affected season ahead, and what that might mean for our Sunday afternoon drinking habits. This week Ben drinks Carolina Brewery's Sky Blue Kolsch and Burial Beer Co's Surf Wax IPA. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We speak with Jess Reiser from Burial Beer Co. She highlights the shifts from Phase 1 to Phase 2 and how that affects her business as well as so many others. We highlight the community connection that taprooms, breweries and pubs have and how that changes as we navigate this pandemic. We dig deeper philosophically into the bigger changes we are all feeling and how taking action is a shorter road than it used to be. We discuss personal and cultural change and how Post-Covid - we can see a different world. A great conversation with an innovator who brings many deep thoughts and salient points.

DSSOLVR Takes Old School and New School and Brews Until Surreal What exactly does it mean to be Brewed Until Surreal? DSSOLVR founders Mike Semenec and Vince Tursi (pictured above) explain it to us, and then things get weird. The pair are old homebrewing buddies that took their separate paths then came back together to start their own brewery. Tursi previously worked with amazing breweries such as Night Shift, Lord Hobo, and Burial Beer Co. while Semenec has a background in animation and design. We talk about DSSOLVR's strong art and branding, which extends to their amazing Instagram account, how much it sucks to open 3 months before a global pandemic, dimensional portals, Freaky Friday, acid rock, and a lot more. We even work in some beer talk about their desire to honor the classics while bringing out new and fun beers, their tasty and balanced Born in the Juicy IPA, and boatloads of collaborations. Feeling overworked?! Between trying to get ahead at your 9-5 and pursuing side hustles, chances are really high that you feel like your work-life balance is out of whack. We find ourselves chronically fatigued and exhausted because we give too much to our work, leaving little left for ourselves and those around us who we love. For instance, as a result most Americans don’t take all their vacation time- and when they do, they find it impossible to actually stop working! At this year's Craft Brewers Conference, the GBH team held a panel discussion on the topic of storytelling for breweries, how it evolves as it grows, and how the story of craft and the story of a single brewery can align and diverge. Breweries have historically united to tell the story of "craft beer" as they work together to build the category and create an educated consumer. But in the past few years, the emphasis has shifted to the uniqueness of the individual journey, and how one brewery differs from another as they both collaborate and compete for the same customers. So we put our thoughts into a short presentation and panel discussion with GBH's storytellers and representatives from breweries as we discuss the similarities and differences between these approaches, all the while trying to determine what's at stake for the next generation of storytelling in American beer. Panelists: Michael Kiser, GBH Founder + Creative Director Erin Jones, Marketing Director, Burial Beer Co. Josh Hambright, Central State Brewing, co-founder Matthew Curtis, GBH storyteller, podcast host Kyle Kastranec, GBH designer and storyteller Special thanks to our friends at Bluejacket for generously hosting us.
