Fewer Nova Scotians will be eligible for a provincial program to help with the costs of heating their homes this winter. It is fair to say the Tim Houston government had boosted the Heating Assistance Rebate program from the modest $200 a year under the previous government. But the $1000 rebate from last winter has been reduced to $600 this season. And the number of people who qualify has also been reduced. For comment, Sheldon spoke with long-time NDP MLA and former party leader Gary Burrill for his thoughts.

MCC Day 28 - S/Sgt. Rehill's Pre-taped Testimony & How Commissioners Might Rebuild Confidence

The Rodgers Brief

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 2, 2022 18:45

Staff Sergeant Brian Rehill testified yesterday, by Zoom, and the video was released this morning. S/Sgt. Rehill had asked for accomodations to allow the testimony to not be broadcast live, and for him to not be cross examined. The MCC Commissioners granted his request, but should be having second thoughts after watching him testify without trouble for over five hours. S/Sgt. Rehill testified about miscommunications on the containment efforts in Portapique, the dynamic of having multiple commanders giving orders over the radio, and distinctions between his evidence and S/Sgt. Halliday's when it came to knowledge of the gunman's replica police car. MCC lawyer Roger Burrill asked the direct questions, and then asked some questions on behalf of the other participants. It is not clear why this procedure was considered less traumatic for the S/Sgt. than having another lawyer ask the same questions, though Burrill's gentle approach and lack of any follow-up may be the answer. In the video, I talk about what I think the Commissioners need to start doing in order to start fostering and establishing some confidence among the participants and the public. It is *not* more pre-written, vaguely phrased remarks about how difficult all this must be for everyone.

Big tech is making some big moves on your personal information. Now, they're making it look good by dressing it up with some fun statistics. For example, Spotify Unwrapped gives you a list of all the music you've listened to the most in the past year. Google Maps has a similar function. It compiles a neat list of all the countries, cities, and places you've visited. It's time to call this out for what it is: they're showing you all the personal information they've gathered from you, and are keeping it in their systems.  The Crown Jewel of Data: Location Your location data is critical information. We've seen journalists, politicians, and gamers doxed for one thing or the other on the internet. In this episode, Alexander and Jason discuss how a Catholic priest was outed by a Christian publication. This happened because they tracked his location using Grindr, and found that he was visiting gay bars and private residence from 2018 to 2020. They concluded that it was his phone based on the location data as well. “A mobile device correlated to Burrill emitted app data signals from the location-based hookup app Grindr on a near-daily basis during parts of 2018, 2019, and 2020 — at both his USCCB office and his USCCB-owned residence, as well as during USCCB meetings and events in other cities.” - The Pillar That's highly specialized location data. Three years of the priest's whereabouts, being logged and stored by the app. And a data vendor was all it took to ruin his entire life. Getting Something for Free? Then You're the Product Should he have been a priest if he was a closeted homosexual? That's not what we're trying to answer here. The core of this issue is that someone tracked this individual's private choices and exposed them without their consent, without them even being aware that they were tracked in the first place. Those fun end-of-the-year summaries on your app activity aren't for free. The Mass Casualty Commission started Day 10 of proceedings with a witness who was able to provide evidence regarding an access road between Cobequid Court, at the lower end of the Portapique subdivision, and then there were two further presentations of Foundational Documents by Commission lawyer, Roger Burrill. These presentations covered the three killings on Hunter Road, and the death of Lillian Campbell in Wentworth. The witness was Deborah Thibeault, who lived next to the access road. This road connects the lower part of Portapique to a blueberry field, where there is a road by which it was suspected the killer escaped the community. She was able to testify about a gate that covered the access road, and which she noticed had been knocked over when she returned to her property approximately a week after killings. The essential evidence that Ms. Thibeault provided was fairly brief, though her examination lasted close to two hours. At times the questioning by Commission lawyer, Jamie VanWart, was painfully slow, and would lead me to presume that the witness had not been prepared. Such lack of preparation can be harmful for a witness in some circumstances, as it can appear that they have a poor memory, when in fact they are just not ready for certain questions. After Ms. Thibeault's evidence, there were the two Foundational Document presentations. Mr. Burrill did both presentations. The information in these presentations certainly drove home the point that had there been an emergency alert issued overnight or early in the morning of the 19th, that many lives would have been saved. The second Foundational Document presentation focused on Lillian Campbell, and how she was killed by Gabriel Wortman while out for her morning walk. The evidence suggests that the killer saw her walking, did a U-turn, and went to speak with her. He shot her from inside his replica RCMP vehicle. It would seem he was concerned he may have been known to be driving an RCMP replica, and so felt he needed to eliminate any witnesses. Again, had there been an emergency alert issue, it is highly unlikely that Ms. Campbell would have taken her morning walk, and so she would still likely be alive today. The Commission will resume hearings tomorrow with a further Foundational Document covering Highway 4, Glenholme, and Plains Road.

The first clip in this compilation of evidence presented to the inquiry is of Roger Burrill, senior attorney for the Mass Casualty Commission, explaining what was learned from the children of Greg and Jamie Blair and Lisa McCully's children. Today was the first day that the Mass Casualty Commission really engaged with the evidence that has been gathered regarding the tragic killings of April 18 - 19, 2020. Commission Counsel, senior legal aid lawyer, Roger Burrill, presented from the “Portapique April 18-19, 2020” Foundational Document. This is a 91-page summary prepared by the Commission that covers the first hour or so of the killing spree, up to the time when the shooter was able to escape Portapique. In terms of significant new evidence (or perhaps it would be better to say descriptions of evidence, since none of this was given as testimony, per se), the revelation that the killer was practically in sight of the RCMP officers as they were being told by one of the killers neighbors that he had just been shot, seems to be the most significant in terms of the mandate of the Commission. Also new is the mention that the DNA of Corrie Ellison was found on the killer's boots. There had been some speculation that Mr. Ellison may have been accidentally shot by an officer in the confusion of the search, but this fact would certainly run counter to that theory. For those who had not previously heard, or read any of the reports of the 911 call made by the McCully and Blair children, who ranged in age from 8-12, the poise and courage which they displayed, while in close proximity to the killer, and under impossibly difficult circumstances, may have made the strongest impression of anything that was outlined by Mr. Burrill. We will find out more tomorrow what the police and other first responders may have known as events were unfolding. It is clear from the evidence unveiled today that they either knew, or should have known, by 11 PM on April 18, 2020, who the killer was, that he was disguised as a police officer, and that there was a chance he had escaped.

On August 24, 2016, 10-year old Victoria Martens was murdered in her Albuquerque apartment. That night, three people were arrested in connection with the crime, including the girl's mother Michelle Martens, a woman named Jessica Kelley, and a man named Fabian Gonzales. Of those three, Gonzales is the only suspect who's case remains open and awaiting trial. However, nearly six years later, Gonzales is still waiting for his day in court as a jury trial has been delayed once again. What's taken so long? Can we expect a trial later this year? What are the complications that surround a trial for a crime that happened nearly six-years ago? How is the COVID-19 pandemic complicating the justice system? Plus: Monsignor Jeffrey Burrill of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops has resigned after his cellphone data was used to track his participation in the gay hookup app Grindr. You will recall the USCCB briefly threatened action (potentially denial of Communion or even excommunication) against American politicians--including President Joe Biden--who are self-proclaimed Catholics who nonetheless support a woman's right to choose when it comes to birth control and abortion. Defrocked Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, 91 years old, has been charged in Massachusetts with sexually assaulting a teenaged boy in 1974. The charges are made possible after so long a time due to a quirk in Massachusetts' statute of limitations, which places a "pause" on the countdown when an offender leaves the state. McCarrick was only defrocked two years ago, and reports reveal that multiple popes either ignored McCarrick's misdeeds or tried to downplay the church's response. Theme music courtesy of Body Found. Episode Notes I am Lemuel Gonzalez, repentant sinner, and along with Amity Armstrong, your heavenly host, I invite you to find a place in the pew for today's painless Sunday School lesson. Without Works. This week we will talk about hypocrisy in the Church- and continue with our conversation about the most problematic declarations of a problematic saint in The More You Know. First, we are going to discuss current hypocrisy, ethics in journalism, and leaps of logic in Not Necessarily the Good News Not Necessarily the Good News Path of thought: Headline: “Catholic leader whose organization voted to deny Biden communion caught using gay dating app” Monsignor Jeffrey Burrill, the general secretary of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops had lead the charge to deny President Biden communion for his abortion stance and I started interested in the hypocrisy angle so common in GOP politicians and clergy. However, when I went to research the story, I was faced with a couple of articles from the WSJ, one of which referred to “conservative Catholic publication, The Pillar.” Read that article and two things stood out - the repeated phrase “According to commercially available records of app signal data obtained by The Pillar” and a lengthy section of the article written, supposedly in relation to Burrill's position in cracking down on child abuse in the church but clearly just written to conflate homosexuality with pedophilia. https://www.upworthy.com/catholic-monsignor-who-pushed-to-deny-joe-biden-communion-caught-using-a-gay-dating-app https://www.pillarcatholic.com/p/pillar-investigates-usccb-gen-sec https://www.washingtonpost.com/religion/2021/07/20/bishop-misconduct-resign-burrill/ The More You Know What informed Paul's negative opinions of homosexuality as a legitimate way to express love? We know that he was a conservative who wanted to anchor the new faith in Old Testament tradition. There are several verses in the Old Testament about the, “sin,” of homosexuality. For instance: If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. Leviticus 20:13 Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind: it is abomination. Leviticus 18:22 Add to this nearly identical stories in both Genesis 19: 1-11 and Judges 19: 16-24 involving roving gangs of homosexual rapists who prey on men travelling from city to city. In both cases the travelling men are sheltered by, “righteous,” elders who offer their virgin daughters to the lustful mob in an attempt to placate their needs. In one case the mob is stopped by angels. In the other the rapists accept the travelling man's offered concubine and rape her to death. The endless cycle of kings that follow the book of Judges take turns indulging and preventing idol worship, and encouraging or punishing the male and female prostitutes that were a part of those rites. This explains why Paul, in the book of Romans, concludes that idol worship is the cause of homosexuality, and describes this as part of his construct on the origin of sin: Why did Paul add these condemnations when Jesus and the rest of the disciples did not? Paul seems to have felt that it was his job to place the new Christianity in the context of the old religion. Try to make it acceptable to people coming from Judaisim. The irony is that Paul's evangelism eventually spread outside of Jewish communities and into gentile groups. Episcopal Bishop John Shelby Sprong has written on the idea that Paul himself was a homosexual man, and that his struggle with his own urges were the basis for his writings excluding them from salvation in the new religion. Bishop Sprong's writings were inspired by theologians like Arthur Darby Nock, who visited the idea of Saint Paul as a struggling gay man. There is no actual evidence to support the idea that Saint Paul was gay. It is a concept that we must acknowledge in discussing him, but there is not biblical or extra biblical historical source that supports the theory. Others scholars have felt keenly the contradiction we brought up last week; that the same man who wrote such powerful passages about the love of God could not be the same man who wrote hurtful passages condemning sexual choices that are out of people's control. The idea here is that these passages were added later by translators and some early churchmen. That could be the case, but there is no proving it, at least not with the documents we have on hand. Finding a very old manuscript without the anti-homosexual additions would be the only way to prove it. In the end we can accept what we have: a stridently anti-gay Paul, who for his own reasons, has excluded same sex love from acceptable expression, even insisting that God has set up this rejection. Of course, as we learned last time, this is the same man who insisted that some people were, “vessels of wrath,” created by God to demonstrate his redemptive, or punishing power. If we accept all scripture is infallible, then we have to accept this as part of our faith. The prejudice is not only justified, but endorsed by God. If we say that the scripture is only right when divinely inspired, how do we make the distinction between inspired and uninspired? Maybe there is another way to look at it. Maybe, as Christians, we use the words of Jesus as a meter, and measure all of the stories as consistent with the spirit of Christ's teaching. If we look at the scriptures through a Christ powered lens, we can see where an apostle's personal opinions or struggles made it into the work. Welcome to another Wednesday of GRADitude as we are joined with an incredible guest that helps teach us about one way she leveled up her professional future while still in PT school. We welcome Julie Burrill to the podcast, a 2nd year SPT and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). Julie received her CSCS certification between her first and second year of PT school. She educates us on everything you need to know to begin your journey, or even if you are interested but not sure where to start. The CSCS is a specialized certification distributed by the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA). From the layout of the certification test, to a timeline of test preparation, Julie covers it all including her own study tips and resources that helped her pass. While the CSCS certification test is not easy, she reminds us of the value in pursuing ways to not only level up your future career, but also your education in the topics that interest you. The CSCS provides incredible insight on a numerous subjects that, although some may overlap with PT school, allow deeper understanding of nutrition, human movement, exercise science, program design, and more. Take out a pen and paper as you will not want to miss out on all the in-depth information Julie shares with us about her journey to CSCS and how to start yours! Church Militant The Vortex Feed

TRANSCRIPT The curious case of Msgr. Jeffrey Burrill is still shrouded in mystery. Almost a year ago, you may recall, Burill, the general secretary of the U.S. bishop conference, abruptly resigned following media reports that he was an active participant on a gay-sex phone app called "Grindr." The reports quickly earned him the name "Msgr. Grindr" and created a public relations crisis with the homosexual-friendly U.S. bishop conference. Bear in mind, the nation's bishops, as a body, warmly embrace homosexuality; they just don't like getting caught doing so, especially when it's discovered one of their own is so active. But nonetheless, that's where we are. So, in the fallout from the scandal, the bishops spun up their legal teams and produced the usual statements of blather about mercy and love and understanding and guilt or innocence and fairness and all that — hoping to produce sufficient smoke and deflection to kick the can down the road, hoping everyone forgets, which most usually do. We got stonewalled. They squirrel these types of men away, quickly getting them out of the limelight, and, then, once the dust has settled, quietly place them back in ministry. We want to play a segment of our call to the diocese of La Crosse asking his whereabouts, progress on the nearly year-old investigation and just overall what's going on. We called and told the switchboard receptionist we had questions about the status of Msgr. Burrill and were transferred to a person we were told was handling that. When we were connected to a lady by the name of Debbie, we got stonewalled. Notice, the diocese denies it's a matter of public concern, but it was the diocese that made it a matter of public concern when it released this statement back in July last year, pointing to the problem with Msgr. Grindr, mentioned in the U.S. bishop conference's public statement about him and the media reports. Notice also that she kicked it upstairs, saying she didn't have the authority to talk about it — fair enough. But then she quickly added that those who do have the authority just aren't going to talk about it. Ever. So it's not really a question of who has the authority; it's actually a matter of they refuse to come clean about all this. The claim that this isn't a matter of public concern is absurd on its face. Recall that Burrill, who worked at the USCCB (which is funded by money from the faithful), lived in USCCB housing funded by the faithful and traveled around on trips all over the country on USCCB business (paid for by the faithful) and used a USCCB phone paid for by the faithful with the gay-sex app on it. How in tarnation does that qualify as not public? It's kind of the definition of public. The diocese denies it's a matter of public concern. But Bp. William Callahan of the diocese never seems to be available to answer these questions. So as to the investigation: What has been learned over the year since it's been launched? Who is conducting it? Who's being questioned? Who is paying for it? And most importantly, where is Burrill — Msgr. Grindr? He presumably is also in receipt of money originating from the faithful — again — a public matter. How much is he making? Who's paying for his food, his housing, his insurance? Does he have a phone? Who's paying for it? Is his phone activity being monitored? But most importantly, does he deny the charges — the entire substance? And, deny or admit, why won't the bishop and his cronies reveal his answer? That they pretend — or worse, believe — you don't have a right to know any of this because it's not public. That tells you everything you need to know. Nothing has changed in the Church hierarchy and these chancery staffers when it comes to cleaning things up. If anything, it's gotten worse.
