Treasure Island, Kidnapped, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and his wonderful short stories like Markheim, The Body Snatcher, and The Bottle Imp to name a few.  Today we begin an episodic journey through the novel Catriona, published as David Balfour in the US. Though the name looks to be spelled Catriona, apparently it's correctly pronounced as Katrina. So that's what we'll do.   This second volume of David Balfour's story is less a straightforward adventure story, and is more of a novel of manners with some adventure sprinkled in. To me it feels like a natural progression as the youth gets older, has more responsibility, and learns to make his way in the wider world of Scottish traditions.     And now, David Balfour, Part 1 of 9, by Robert Louis Stevenson   Follow this link to get The Audiobook Library Card for a special price of $9.99/month   Follow this link and get Multiple Licenses for The Audiobook Library Card   Follow this link and watch the new video walkthrough using PocketBook.       Follow this link to subscribe to our YouTube Channel:       Follow this link to subscribe to the Arsène Lupin Podcast:     Follow this link to follow us on Instagram:     Follow this link to follow us on Facebook:

This summer, I thought of something a little different. Robert Louis Stevenson, my gateway drug to the classics, wrote a sequel to Kidnapped that is quite good, but not as well known. I've been wanting to do it for some time, but the time didn't seem right. This summer I think we'll give it a go.   So that you all can refresh yourselves on David Balfour's story, I'm planning a few more robust vintage episodes during the next few weeks, where we'll hear the entire novel of Kidnapped in three episodes.   Now, here's the thing – this is like, one of the first audiobooks I've ever recorded. So while it still gets a fair rating on Audible, you'll hear that I'm still getting my sea legs. Kidnapped has never appeared on The Classic Tales Podcast and has only been available in our retail outlets.   And if you've never heard it before, you're in for a real treat. In this Friday Headline Brief of The Wright Report, Bryan opens with the latest on "deal or no deal" with Iran, as the U.S. and Tehran remain far apart on a peace agreement over Iran's enriched nuclear material and its demand to control the Strait of Hormuz, while the Pentagon prepares for renewed military action if talks fail. He also covers growing signs of U.S. pressure on Cuba, including the arrival of the USS Nimitz strike group in the Caribbean, CIA Director John Ratcliffe's recent trip to Havana, and the DOJ indictment of former Cuban leader Raul Castro. Bryan then turns to a deepening investigation into Neville Roy Singham, the Communist activist living in Shanghai under China's protection, whose money allegedly supports socialist and leftist groups across the United States, including networks tied to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Plus, Bryan breaks down socialist backlash in Seattle and New York as wealthy residents and major companies threaten to leave over tax hikes, the 42-year prison sentence for Feeding Our Future fraud figure Aimee Bock, and a major clash between President Trump and GOP senators over the SAVE Act, the filibuster, and Trump's legislative agenda. He closes with updates on China's looming critical mineral export controls, Trump's new $2 billion quantum computing push, Ebola in Congo, Hantavirus research in the Pacific Northwest, and promising cancer research on pancreatic tumors and vitamin D for breast cancer surgery recovery.   "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." - John 8:32     Keywords: Iran peace deal Strait of Hormuz nuclear material 2026, Trump Iran war Pentagon targeting list Hormuz mines, USS Nimitz Cuba Caribbean Raul Castro DOJ indictment, CIA Director John Ratcliffe Havana Cuba negotiations, Neville Roy Singham China Communist funding investigation, Seattle wealth tax Katie Wilson Starbucks Tennessee move, Zohran Mamdani NYC wealth tax free groceries, Feeding Our Future fraud Aimee Bock 42 years prison, Trump GOP Senate fight SAVE Act filibuster John Thune, China critical minerals export controls June 2026, Trump quantum computing IBM investment, Ebola Congo outbreak Hantavirus Washington Idaho, pancreatic cancer inflammation treatment vitamin D breast cancer surgery, Bryan Dean Wright podcast, The Wright Report

STREAMING THE MAKING OF THE JOHN BATCHELOR SHOW, FEATURING THADDEUS MCCOTTER, 4-28-2026.(ABRIDGED BY TECH ERRORS.)1930 BOSPHORUSThe current administration faces a dire economic landscape dominated by surging gasoline prices at $4.11 per gallon and oil hitting $111 a barrel. These pressures are exacerbated by escalating threats to global maritime choke points, specifically the Straits of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb, disrupting energy supplies to Asia and Europe while stalling growth in nations like Germany. Pocketbook issues further complicate the political environment, as the rising cost of beef, eggs, and staple goods create a "textbook" list of troubles for the incumbent party. Young people are increasingly forced to rent because high interest rates make purchasing a home prohibitively expensive.Despite holding the majority, Republicans are in a precarious position because immediate remedies, such as resolving the Iranian conflict, remain outside of congressional control. If voters do not feel the palpable benefit of Republicanpolicies, they will turn to the Democratic Party as a practical alternative in November. Democrats may win by positioning themselves as an effective check, mimicking Rahm Emanuel's 2006 strategy of simply not being Republicans. This strategy allows them to gain power without a detailed agenda by focusing instead on stopping the current administration's trajectory. While seeking tariff relief through negotiations with China, much of the inflation is already baked in and unlikely to drop immediately. Because this administration is transactional and far less predictable than traditional regimes, the Republican majority's path forward remains uncertain as the "hour is getting late".

In this Friday Headline Brief of The Wright Report, Bryan delivers fresh intelligence on the war with Iran, explaining why a ceasefire is holding for now, what role China is playing behind the scenes, and how a fragile peace could reshape the Middle East—especially as tensions between Israel and Hezbollah threaten to derail progress. He also breaks down a broader strategic vision emerging from the White House, including efforts to isolate Iran by securing peace between Israel and Lebanon, expanding regional alliances, and potentially redrawing energy routes that could weaken Tehran's long-term leverage. At the same time, Bryan reports rising frustration from President Trump toward European and Asian allies who have largely stayed on the sidelines, raising the possibility of a major shift in U.S. troop deployments abroad. On the domestic front, Bryan highlights encouraging economic signals, including strong job growth, manufacturing gains, and expected relief in gas prices, while also diving into escalating legal and political battles over immigration, birthright citizenship, and federal court authority. He closes with a look at a growing workplace trend: employees quietly sabotaging AI tools as concerns mount over productivity demands and job security in an increasingly automated economy.   "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." - John 8:32     Keywords: Iran ceasefire update 2026 China role Middle East peace, Israel Lebanon Hezbollah conflict Litani River strategy, Trump foreign policy troop withdrawal Europe Asia, Strait of Hormuz global energy crisis oil prices, US economy jobs report inflation gas prices April 2026, birthright citizenship Supreme Court debate polling, immigration policy federal judges Trump rulings, AI workplace sabotage Gen Z productivity concerns, Bryan Dean Wright podcast, The Wright Report

Each week, we'll have a definition from the Devil's Lexicographer himself – Ambrose Bierce. Over the course of 30 years, Bierce nearly weekly wrote a cynical definition of a common word, sometimes consisting of poems, which he sold to various newspapers and periodicals. After 30 years, he collected all of these into one volume which came to be called The Devil's Dictionary. In keeping with the spirit of its creation, we'll hear one of his jocular definitions before we begin today's show.   So, the Word for the Week is Infancy, and here to read it is Ambrose Bierce himself:   INFANCY, n. The period of our lives when, according to Wordsworth, "Heaven lies about us." The world begins lying about us pretty soon afterward.   Thank you Mr. Bierce.   And now, Michael Strogoff, Part 8 of 9, by Jules Verne.   Follow this link and watch the new video walkthrough using PocketBook.   Follow this link to get The Audiobook Library Card for a special price of $9.99/month       Follow this link to subscribe to our YouTube Channel:       Follow this link to subscribe to the Arsène Lupin Podcast:     Follow this link to follow us on Instagram:     Follow this link to follow us on Facebook:

Trump Pushes Iran on Deal; Former Prince Andrew Released After Arrest

Today's top stories, with context, in just 15 minutes. On today's podcast:1) The US military is stationing a vast array of forces in the Middle East, including two aircraft carriers, fighter jets and refueling tankers, with President Trump saying that Iran had 10 to 15 days at most to strike a deal over its nuclear program. “We’re either going to get a deal, or it’s going to be unfortunate for them,” Trump told reporters Thursday aboard Air Force One. On a deadline, Trump said he thought 10 to 15 days was “pretty much” the “maximum” he would allow for negotiations to continue. The deployment is unlike anything the US has done since 2003, when it amassed forces before the invasion of Iraq. It dwarfs the military buildup that Trump ordered off the coast of Venezuela in the weeks before he ousted President Nicolas Maduro. While the US isn’t likely to deploy ground troops, the buildup suggests Trump is giving himself discretion to launch a sustained campaign lasting many days, in cooperation with Israel.2) President Trump declared victory in the fight over cost-of-living concerns, signaling a new approach that seeks to deny problems with his economic agenda while touting stock market gains to insist that his tariff plans have been a success. Pocketbook issues have emerged as the central focus of the upcoming November congressional elections with households hit hard by costs for groceries, utilities and housing. Polls show voters have soured on Trump’s economic policies, endangering Republicans’ hold on both chambers of Congress and the future of the president’s legislative agenda. Trump and allies have highlighted slowing inflation and job growth that has come in above expectations, but that has failed to assuage voters, and opened the door for Democrats who have seized on that discontent to boost their midterm prospects.3) Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the brother of the UK’s King Charles, was released under investigation on Thursday after being arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office. The Thames Valley Police confirmed it had released a Norfolk man in his sixties, without mentioning the former royal by name. Last week, the police force said it was leading the assessment of allegations tied to the US Department of Justice’s publication of files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. King Charles III issued a statement outlining his “deepest concern” about the matter and promising Buckingham Palace’s “full and wholehearted support and co-operation” with the investigating authorities. The arrest of Andrew, who turned 66 on Thursday, heaps further embarrassment on Britain’s royal family following years of lurid allegations about ties with Epstein that the former prince has consistently denied. His arrest appears to be the first of a UK royal since King Charles I in the 17th century following his defeat in the English Civil War.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

During the Great Depression, the proliferation of local taxpayers' associations was dramatic and unprecedented. The justly concerned members of these organizations examined the operations of state, city, and county governments, then pressed local officials for operational and fiscal reforms. These associations aimed to reduce the cost of state and local governments to make operations more efficient and less expensive. "Mr. Taxpayer versus Mr. Tax Spender": Taxpayers' Associations, Pocketbook Politics, and the Law during the Great Depression (Temple UP, 2023) by Dr. Linda Upham-Bornstein presents a comprehensive overview of these grassroots taxpayers' leagues beginning in the 1860s and shows how they evolved during their heyday in the 1930s. Dr. Upham-Bornstein chronicles the ways these taxpayers associations organized as well as the tools they used—constructive economy, political efforts, tax strikes, and tax revolt through litigation—to achieve their objectives. Taxpayer activity was a direct consequence of—and a response to—the economic crisis of the Great Depression and the expansion of the size and scope of government. “Mr. Taxpayer versus Mr. Tax Spender” connects collective tax resistance in the 1930s to the populist tradition in American politics and to other broad impulses in American political and legal history. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars.
