A lot of the big trends in the economy right now are converging in the auto sector, and the negotiations over new contracts for autoworkers at the Big Three carmakers: Ford, GM, and Stellantis. You've got the conflict between workers and employers over wages, and some evidence that workers may have more leverage than they've had in a long time. You've got the clean energy transition, with the rise of EVs and what that means for the industry and people who work in it. And you've got the push to manufacture more things onshore again, and preserve an industry that's been an engine for middle-class jobs for decades. On today's show Jim Stanford joins us to explain how all these issues are playing a role in the negotiations between Unifor and UAW and the Big Three, and what autoworkers want to see in their new contracts. Jim is an economist and Director of the Centre for Future Work, and spent 20 years as Economist and Director of Policy for the union formerly known as the Canadian Auto Workers (and now known as Unifor). Note: This episode was recorded prior to the Unifor strike at the GM facilities in Ontario. ----- More episodes of Free Lunch by The Peak: https://readthepeak.com/shows/free-lunch Follow Taylor on Twitter: @taylorscollon Follow Sarah on Twitter: @sarahbartnicka Subscribe to The Peak's daily business newsletter: https://readthepeak.com/b/the-peak/subscribe
Richard Cashin, lawyer, politician, union leader (b at St John's 5 Jan 1937). He was a grandson of Sir Michael Cashin, sometimes known as "King of the Robbers" for his south shore salvage operations, who was frequent Cabinet minister and prime minister of Newfoundland, and he was the nephew of Peter J. CASHIN. Cashin was himself elected Liberal MP for St John's West in 1962, 1963 and 1965.After his defeat in 1968 he practised law and won a significant settlement for Placentia Bay fishermen who were suing the Electric Reduction Co for phosphorus-based destruction of their fish. In 1970 he joined with Father Desmond McGrath, a former St Francis Xavier University classmate, to help organize the Fishermen's Union. After major victories over the fishing companies at Burgeo in 1972 and in the trawlermen's strike of 1975, the union fully established itself. Now the biggest union in Newfoundland by far, the Newfoundland Fishermen, Food and Allied Workers' Union is a major political force.Cashin supported NDP candidates in the mid-1970s but joined the National Unity Task Force and the board of Petro-Canada in 1977. In the 1980s, however, he has led the NFFAWU into full support of the NDP and is himself a party vice-president. The union has also been very active in the Coalition for Equality, a broad coalition of labour and other progressive groups. In spring 1987 he led the union out of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union into the new Canadian Auto Workers. Cashin was founder of the Fishermen, Food and Allied Workers' Union and its president from 1971 to 1993. He was chairman of the Task Force on Incomes and Adjustment in the Atlantic Fishery (1992-93). He was chairman of the Task Force on Incomes and Adjustment in the Atlantic Fishery (1992-93) and a member of the National Forum on Health (1994-97). He also became chair of the Fishing Industry Renewal Board and a member of the Canadian Transportation Agency. In 1989 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada and in 1992 was named to the Queen's Privy Council of Canada.#galeforcewins is an inspirational podcast with New episodes every Tuesday evening on Youtube or wherever you get your podcasts. We also launched Gale Force Wins on the Rogers Television Network in St. John's on January 31st 2023 with a series of 12 episodes. You can also visit https://galeforcewins.com/To message Gerry visit: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gerrycarew/To message Allan visit: https://www.linkedin.com/in/allanadale/
On an early episode of Sweater Weather host Aaron Giovannone speaks with Sam Gindin, co-author of modern classic The Making of Global Capitalism (2012), as well as the more recent but no less essential The Socialist Challenge Today (2020) both co-written with his long-time friend and colleague Leo Panitch. From 1974-2000, Sam was the director of research at the Canadian Auto Workers union, now Unifor, the largest private sector union in Canada.Sam is an internationally recognized authority on political economy and social movements, and he frequently writes and speaks about socialism in a global context—but he's Canadian, so I was keen to hear what he had to say about the battle on the home front. We talk about Canada's place in the global capitalist system, about Canada's possibilities for economic nationalism, about Canadian unions and the working class, the Green New Deal versus Green Capitalism, and his promising efforts with a worker-led project called Green Jobs Oshawa.Aaron and Sam also talk about the Canadian manifestations of the left populist up-welling in recent years, which he thinks was (unfortunately) captured by the Trudeau Liberals. And we'll address that age-old question for Canadian socialists: to NDP, or not to NDP.* Support Sweater Weather at www.patreon.com/canadiansweater* Check out the website at https://www.sweaterweatherpod.com/* Watch the conversation on the SW YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTToo3_nZGE

Gindin calls on us to transform America whatever the outcome of the U.S. election. We discuss socialist visions, Syriza, racial solidarity in the U.S., and the need for widespread socialist education. Sam Gindin has served as director of research for the Canadian Auto Workers union from 1974 to 2000, and Visiting Packer Chair in the political science department at York University. With co-author Leo Panitch, who appears on an earlier episode of this podcast, he has written extensively about the U.S. state’s role in globalizing neoliberalism. Most recently, he co-authored The Socialist Challenge Today: Syriza, Corbyn and Sanders. He is also a contributing editor of the Socialist Register.
We sit down to chat with Sam Gindin, former director of research for the Canadian Auto Workers, about how he came to find himself on the Left as well as about the developments that he has witnessed and participated in since then. The discussion spans from Sam's memories of growing up in Winnipeg to his reflections on Syriza and Corbyn. Oats relies on listener support to sustain itself. Sam Gindin joins us today for a 2-hour juggernaut of a chat about the fight against capitalism and the requirements of a successful socialist project. Sam worked with the Canadian Auto Workers for many decades before co-authoring many articles and books with Leo Panitch, one of which, The Making of Global Capitalism (Verso, 2012), won the Deutscher Prize. We discuss the nine pillars of a successful socialist movement outlined in his article from 2016 titled, “Un-making Global Capitalism.” Although it is a couple years old, its themes are evergreen. Sam’s relevant writings can be found here: -“Un-making Global Capitalism,” https://jacobinmag.com/2014/06/unmaking-global-capitalism -“Building a Mass Socialist Party,” https://www.jacobinmag.com/2016/12/socialist-party-bernie-sanders-labor-capitalism/ -"GM Oshawa: Making Hope Possible," https://socialistproject.ca/2018/12/gm-oshawa-making-hope-possible/ -Socialist Bullet: https://socialistproject.ca/ ------------------------- Twitter: @deadpundits Soundcloud: @deadpundits Facebook: facebook.com/deadpunditssociety iTunes: itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/id1212081214 Patreon: www.patreon.com/deadpundits YouTube: www.youtube.com/channel/UCHahv2fM9eH2K4TzmsWl_Xg

This is Event 3 of Victorian Fabians' Autumn Series on 'What do we mean by Equality?' The first two events of our Autumn series explored the effects and degree of economic inequality, as well as the renewed concept of 'class' as revealed through social and cultural inequality in Australia. Our next event will look at how to address the consequences of inequality, now and in future. What will be the developments in society that might lead to increased or diminished future social and economic inequality? What societal and policy changes, both to the nature of work and the provision of social services such as education, health and welfare, are needed to redress the inequality imbalance? Are our institutional responses up to the task? What sort of governing institutions and policies are needed to promote equality? Jim Stanford Jim Stanford is an economist and the Director of the Centre for Future Work, based at the Australia Institute. He is a Canadian who has relocated to Australia, much to our benefit! In Canada, he served for over 20 years as an economist and Director of Policy with Unifor, Canada’s largest private-sector trade union (formerly Canadian Auto Workers). In Australia he has pursued interests in precarious and insecure work, the effects of automation on work, the strategic importance of public sector work, and how governments could support better wages and working conditions for all.

In the second episode of the series on worker cooperatives, we build on the conversation that we began in Episode one, which explored how cooperatives can serve as a force to widen the spheres of democracy in our society. This second episode shifts the focus outward, exploring how cooperatives confront global capitalism. "Islands within a Sea of Capitalism" takes a deep dive into the Mondragon Cooperative Corporation—the largest network of federated cooperatives in the world. We take listeners on a journey through the Basque region of northern Spain where Mondragon is located, and explore Mondragon's successes and challenges through candid conversations with several worker-members at Mondragon headquarters and at various cooperatives within the federation. After presenting an in-depth exploration of the recent and mixed history of Mondragon from multiple perspectives—including a Marxist analysis—we travel across the Atlantic to Jackson, Mississippi, where an ambitious initiative is just getting underway. Cooperation Jackson is part of the same trans-local organizing movement that inspired Cooperation Richmond, which was featured in Episode one. Cooperation Jackson aims to be the Mondragon of North America. Featuring: Kali Akuno — Co-founder and co-director of Cooperation Jackson Gorka Espiau —Senior Fellow at the Agirre Lehendakaria Center at the University of the Basque Country Sam Gindin — Writer, director of research at the Canadian Auto Workers (retired) Professor of Political Science at York University (retired) Ander Exteberria — Cooperative dissemination at Mondragon Corporation Izaksun Ezpeleta — Worker/member at Fagor Electronics Andoni — Worker/member at Fagor Ederland. Employment is becoming more and more precarious. It's getting harder and harder to find what we used to call a “permanent” job, with a good salary, with benefits and with no specified end date. Unifor, Canada's largest private sector union held an event to address this issue earlier in October. There was a wide range of speakers, and today we're devoting the show to some of the ideas that were presented. The Good Jobs Summit was cosponsored by Unifor, Canada's largest private sector union, The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, Ryerson University's Sam Gindin Chair in Social Justice, and the Canadian Federation of Students. 2:26 Jessica McCormick, National Chair of the Canadian Federation of Students. How to counter the trend towards part-time precarious employment is a subject which all the unions struggle with. 10:48 Hassan Yussuff, President of the Canadian Labour Congress. You can hear more of the presentations by going to rabble's soundcloud page at www.soundcloud.com/rabbleca. Unifor, one of the sponsors of the Good Jobs Summit, is a new union. Sort of, anyway. Unifor was created through the merger of two unions — the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union, and the Canadian Auto Workers Union. One of our podcasts, Twelve Canadians, by Dave Kattenburg of the Green Planet Monitor, is a portrait of Ken Lewenza. Ken is from Windsor, from Local 444 at the Chrysler plant. He has held almost every union position there is … from Shop Steward in the plant all the way up to President of the Canadian Auto Workers. 21:31 Stephen Dale prepared this profile of Ken Lewenza for the Green Planet Monitor.
Historian Howard Zinn once said that dissent is the highest form of patriotism. In this episode we will hear from a number of dissenters. First, sign of the times. We'll hear how a placard holding woman near parliament hill drew an unwelcome visit from the RCMP. And, a group of folks in Regina, Saskatchewan are resisting private control over their water. Then, an announcement of a different kind of labour union, whose leaders say that their dissenting voices will be heard. And Inter Pares founder Ian Smillie about whether development work is working. In our democracy holding a protest sign is a pretty basic right of freedom of expression. Or is it? Redeye host Jane Williams gets the story from one woman who was stopped by the RCMP for doing just that – holding a sign. Hear the whole interview here. Citizen advocacy group Regina Water Watch has forced a referendum to keep their wastewater facility public. Scott Neigh spoke with activist Jeremy Campbell about the campaign. Hear the whole interview here. Over the labour day weekend a new union was formed in Canada. It is named “Unifor,” and it is made up of the members of Canadian Auto Workers union and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union. UNIFOR is now the largest private sector union in Canada. It represents more than 20 sectors. That's over 300 000 workers. The leaders of the new union say UNIFOR will do things differently. Here is Inaugural Unifor President Jerry Dias making the opening statement at his first Unifor press conference. To hear the whole press conference listen here. Does development work? Ian Smilley has some thoughts on the matter. Smiley has been an international development practitioner, consultant, teacher and writer for many years. He has lived and worked in Asia and Africa, was a founder of Inter Pares and Executive Director of CUSO. This month, a new podcast called face 2 face, hosted by David Peck joined the network. Here is David Peck talking with Ian Smilley. Hear the whole interview here. Finally, please support our campaign to put Karl Nerenberg back on the on Parliament Hill beat.
