This interview with Benjamin Ryan is a BONUS episode for paying subscribers only. The first few minutes of this episode is available to all listeners. To hear the entire conversation, become a paying subscriber here. On April 10th, a big story broke in the gender world: The long-awaited report commissioned by the UK's National Health Service, known as the Cass Review, was released. As soon as the report hit the news cycle, gender-critical activists celebrated it as the final nail in the coffin of harmful practices, while trans-rights activists accused it of faulty methodology. So who was right? This week, I spoke with Benjamin Ryan, a health and science reporter, to help unpack the Cass Review's data. Ben has spent years covering the intersection of health and public policy. He has a remarkably clear head and is a disciplined thinker about the youth gender medicine debate, so he is a great person to explain what is and is not in the Cass Review. GUEST BIO Benjamin Ryan is an independent journalist who focuses on health care and science. He contributes to several major publications, including The New York Times, The Guardian, and NBC News. He has a particular interest in public health, medicine, and psychology, and has spent years reporting on HIV. His work has received multiple awards from NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists, including the Excellence in HIV/AIDS Coverage Award. Benjamin is a cancer survivor and enjoys reading, theatre, movies, biking, cooking, and photography in his spare time. Follow him on Twitter here. Follow his Substack here. The blog post It's interesting to observe a hospital process (or lack thereof) when a family member needs surgery. I had the opportunity to do so one day last week. I originally shared this on LinkedIn as a post and real-time updates. Thankfully, the clinical care seemed to be good, and that family member is recovering well from the outpatient procedure. But, the experience could have been better. I'm critiquing the process and the apparent culture, not the individuals involved. They are part of a system, which includes their job role design, training, and supervision. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/lean-blog-audio/support

Esperanza and Irwin hearken back to the days before 300 plus cable tv channels and numerous streaming options. If you're of a certain age, you remember channels 2 to 13, and possibly UHF. Rooftop antennas, tin foil on the rabbit ears. But eastern Long Island weren't getting TV out of NYC. Apparently, those signals did not travel effectively west to east. Rather, channels out of Hartford, New Haven and Providence were the only game in town, and not all to clear either. A fun look back at an era where technology certainly did not rule.

Steve recaps the lies, distortions, and cliches on today's show from Joe Biden and his State of the Union address. Joe Biden has shown his true colors time and time again, which is nothing but mediocre pandering to the power structures in his party, and right now that is the far-left. Next, I discuss the TikTok “ban” and what the legislation calls for, which is keeping our data and children away from our enemies' hands. Next, Susan Shelley joins me to discuss California's Super Tuesday results and exactly why Gavin Newsom's Proposition 1 did not go as planned by the Democrats. Lastly, California District 47 Congressional candidate Scott Baugh joins me to discuss his election results and his plan for his primary campaign. This is not an episode you want to miss!

As we enter an emotionally charged election filled with uncertainty, Emory University's Goizueta Business School professor Suhas Sridharan joins to discuss corporate political strategy. Learn from the transformative and tumultuous journeys of global giants like Uber and Facebook – and find out how navigating policy making and the regulatory landscape just may make or break your business. Business and politics. Two huge institutions that are inseparably intertwined. As we enter an emotionally charged election year, businesses and individuals are speculating how political outcomes will impact their lives and the success of their organizations. Suhas Sridharan joins to discuss how you can navigate political systems to achieve the mission of your organization, actions you can take to influence policy making and political outcomes, and how the regulatory landscape can make or break your business. We'll also delve into the role that activists, interest groups and corporate social responsibility play in shaping your success. Suhas is an associate professor in Accounting at Emory University's Goizueta Business School. Prior to this, she earned her PhD in business administration from Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. Her expertise has been featured in leading publications including the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and Financial Times. Identifying Pivotal Politicians Suhas discusses strategies for identifying politicians pivotal to a company's mission, highlighting the use of data-driven tools to measure political ideologies. She offers the resource voteview.com as a starting point for exploration. When it comes to influencing these politicians, she discusses the merits of differing strategies, including reaching out to politicians that run counter to your strategies and convincing them to become allies versus connecting with politicians already aligned with your cause and encouraging them to use their networks and influence to support your objectives, the latter of which is known as sequential lobbying. Melanie and Suhas also delve into additional actions businesses can take to influence politicians and political outcomes. They discuss campaign finance, the role of PACs, and the misconception surrounding corporate contributions to political campaigns, where owners, employees, and families may contribute to these funds, but not corporations themselves. The Revolving Door Strategy As Suhas elaborates on the value of board appointments, she emphasizes the benefits to corporations of hiring individuals with political experience to navigate regulatory environments, also known as the revolving door strategy. She touches on the power of industry-level cooperation and coalitions, such as trade associations, in influencing policy. Expansion and Challenges of Uber Melanie and Suhas reflect on Uber's approach to navigating regulatory challenges and the timing of business actions in relation to political landscapes. Suhas begins by examining Uber's journey from a luxury black car service to the more ubiquitous UberX. She highlights the challenges Uber faced, particularly from entrenched taxi industries, and the importance of navigating regulatory landscapes in different markets. Corporate Political Strategy The conversation shifts towards corporate political strategy, emphasizing the need for businesses to assess issues comprehensively, identify pivotal policymakers, and build coalitions effectively. Suhas stresses the adaptability of such strategies across local and global markets, underscoring the significance of understanding local cultures and contexts. Facebook's Experience in India Using Facebook's experience in India as a case study, Suhas explores the complexities of expanding into emerging markets. She discusses Facebook's initiative, internet.org, aimed at providing internet access to one of the world's largest markets, but facing backlash due to concerns over net neutrality and a lack of cultural awareness and understanding. Activists and Interest Groups Suhas underscores the pivotal role of activists and interest groups in shaping policy agendas and influencing corporate decisions. She illustrates this with historical examples, such as Ralph Nader's impact on automobile safety regulations, and contemporary instances, such as boycotts affecting companies like Kyte Baby. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) The conversation extends to CSR as a strategic imperative for businesses. Suhas explains how CSR initiatives, often driven by market demands, serve as a form of self-regulation, enabling companies to mitigate regulatory risks and enhance reputation. Suhas provides actionable insights for business leaders seeking to develop effective political strategies. She emphasizes the importance of issue identification, leveraging resources like media, lobbyists, and trade associations, and actively engaging with stakeholders to navigate complex political landscapes. As active women, we're so used to our bodies being considered “other” or “less than” in health and fitness media, we barely notice it. Our bouncing breasts are a problem. Our wide hips are a problem. Our periods, boy oh boy, big problem. And when we hit perimenopause and menopause? Well, until very recently nobody even bothered talking about us…especially exercise physiology researchers, who, as this week's guest Christine Yu discovered, have largely overlooked athletic and active menopausal women. This week we flip the script and make women's bodies the norm as we dive in on what we know and the research we need to answer the questions we have. Christine Yu is the author of Up to Speed: The Groundbreaking Science of Women Athletes, in which she explains the latest research and celebrates the researchers, athletes, and advocates pushing back against the status quo and proposing better solutions to improve the active and athletic lives of women and girls. Yu is an award-winning journalist whose work focuses on the intersection of sports science and women athletes. Her writing has appeared in Outside, The Washington Post, Runner's World, and other publications. She's a lifelong athlete and yoga teacher who loves running, surfing, and skiing. Organic Gardening For Beginners: Tips To Plan And Grow Your Own Productive Garden
What is there to do in your garden in December? Well, it depends on where you live!Zone 9 and above can work on overwintering flowers and perennial veggies, harvesting crops that are still producing. Zone 8 and below is mostly just maintaining what you've got. Your fall and winter garden doesn't need a whole lot of input right now as most plants have gone dormant with the lower daylight hours. But no matter your zone, this is a great time to think ahead to next year and start planning. Here are some great questions to ask yourself: What will your seed starting schedule be?What sort of garden planning and layouts do you need to create? Will you try to extend the spring season with row covers or low tunnels? Do you need to build any new garden beds?Do you need to buy any seeds, or take inventory of what you already have? This is also a great time to start learning about something new in the gardening world. For me, it's JADAM, a natural, low-cost, Korean agriculture system that relies on making your own fertilizers and building soil health on-site. It uses cover crops, grass mulch, and certain bacteria to help. I'm still learning a lot, but I'll share how I'm implementing it in a future episode. As always, thanks for tuning into the show!

Another day means more tech issues, but luckily all was resolved as quick as possible. If you missed the opening portion of the show it's available in the first hour of the podcast! In the first hour, SKOR North's Judd Zulgad talks about blacked out Minnesota Vikings games back in the day before the conversations shifts to how baseball isn't romanticized today like it used to be, and KSTP's Chris Egert has the latest on Biden's meeting with Xi, some of the last remaining pandas are leaving the U.S. plus other local stories! Hour #2 has the crew learn about the Red Cup Rebellion which details the largest Starbucks strike to date, seeing workers set to leave the store until a new contract is agreed upon with their union. Plus Tom drools over how good Entenmann's Donuts are. In hour #3 Kristyn Burtt enjoys a bit of gossip. And by "a bit" I mean "a lot". And that's the perspective of someone who works in Hollywood. It seems that if you work in showbiz for long enough, you'll witness enough divorces to make even a certain minister proud. On the Family, we recall the good old days when Thanksgiving dinner was more expensive, inflation was higher, and interest rates were in the double digits. Hey, it's important to remember that even if things suck, they could always suck worse. That's called positivity. Or maybe it's just positivity-adjacent. Close enough. We appreciate your time!----------------Campaign contribution limits are one of the few mechanisms in place to prevent wealthy special interests from spending unlimited money to rig the political system in their favor. But there are some states where it's just too easy to skirt around these limits and other states that actually don't have limits at all. In this episode of Democracy Decoded, host Simone Leeper highlights how without campaign contribution limits, the vast financial resources of special interests can outweigh the priorities of everyday citizens. Experts and advocates discuss the intricacies of the electoral playing field, and how to best protect the voter's right to elect candidates who truly represent their values. They highlight the work of grassroots coalitions and advocacy groups working together for fair and equitable campaign finance laws in states like Illinois and Oregon.Simone speaks with Alisa Kaplan, the Executive Director of Reform for Illinois, who illustrates how a provision in state law allows candidates to amass unlimited campaign contributions. Campaign Legal Center's founder and President Trevor Potter, and Patrick Llewellyn, Director of State Campaign Finance, offer insights into the broader landscape of states without contribution limits, and the importance of these laws in preserving the integrity of the democratic process. Simone also speaks with Kate Titus, the executive director of Common Cause Oregon, about a recent amendment in Oregon that introduced the possibility of contribution limits in the state, and the years of advocacy by voters that led to change.Host and Guests:Simone Leeper litigates a wide range of redistricting-related cases at CLC, challenging gerrymanders and advocating for election systems that guarantee all voters an equal opportunity to influence our democracy. Prior to arriving at CLC, Simone was a law clerk in the office of Senator Ed Markey and at the Library of Congress, Office of General Counsel. She received her J.D. cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center in 2019 and a bachelor's degree in political science from Columbia University in 2016.Alisa Kaplan is the Executive Director of Reform for Illinois. She joined the organization in 2018, drawn to its long history of fighting for campaign finance reform and against systemic corruption. As Executive Director, she leads RFI's policy development, advocacy, and educational initiatives and oversees operations. A Yale graduate with a J.D. and Ph.D. in Political Science from Northwestern University, Alisa brings expertise in law and the political process and a background in community organizing, grassroots activism, and nonprofit administration. She has been a Faculty Lecturer at Northwestern, teaching Constitutional Law, Civil Rights, and Law and Politics. In her role at RFI, Alisa feels fortunate to be able to spend every day fighting for a more ethical and equitable Illinois government that works not just for the wealthy and well-connected, but for everyone.Trevor Potter is the founder and President of Campaign Legal Center. He leads CLC in its efforts to advance democracy through law. A Republican former Chairman of the Federal Election Commission (FEC), Trevor was general counsel to John McCain's 2000 and 2008 presidential campaigns and an adviser to the drafters of the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law. To many, he is perhaps best known for his recurring appearances on The Colbert Report as the lawyer for Stephen Colbert's super PAC, Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow, during the 2012 election, a program that won a Peabody Award for excellence in reporting on money in politics. Trevor has provided testimony and written statements to Congress on federal election proposals, campaign finance regulation and, recently, the effects of the January 6th attack on our democracy. He has also taught campaign finance law at the University of Virginia School of Law and Oxford University, and he has appeared widely in national broadcast and print media. During the 2020 election season, Trevor was named to the cross-partisan National Task Force on Election Crises.Patrick Llewellyn is Director, State Campaign Finance at Campaign Legal Center. He directs CLC's work with state and local stakeholders and policymakers to advance innovative campaign finance policies. Prior to joining CLC, Patrick worked as an attorney at Public Citizen Litigation Group, where his practice focused on government transparency and he represented nonprofits, journalists and researchers at all levels of federal court, and as a staff attorney/teaching fellow in the Civil Rights Clinic at Georgetown University Law Center, where he supervised law students on voting rights, workers' rights and other civil rights matters in state and federal courts.Kate Titus serves as executive director of Common Cause Oregon. She brings to this work a background in public policy and community organizing, having worked previously for a number of other public interest organizations including Public Citizen and Oregon Action. Kate is a graduate of Connecticut College, and earned a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard.
