To burner phone or not to burner phone? The current debate on social media amid heightened searches of personal electronic devices by US immigration officers. Combined with new requirements for Canadians travelling to the US, such as mandatory registration with the American government for a 30+ day stay, as well as frightening headlines of travelers being detained at the border - Canadians are rightfully turned off from the US. But for those who don't have the choice to opt out of travel, what can they expect, and are they safe? Host Maria Kestane speaks to Frédéric Dimanche, Director and Professor of the Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism, about what the current climate of Canada-US travel safety looks like, and what Canadians should expect when - or *if* - they head south. We love feedback at The Big Story, as well as suggestions for future episodes. While the United States' 25 percent tariffs on Canadian imports are on hold, observers said the tariffs will return if Canada fails to meet further US demands, and the bilateral relationship would remain challenging. During the 30-day suspension of the 25 percent tariff, Adam Chapnick, a professor of defense studies at the Royal Military College of Canada, contended that negotiations between Canada and the US will proceed quietly and in conjunction with discussions with Mexico. However, if Canada fails to meet further US demands, the tariffs could certainly return," he told China Daily. He said that "most Canadian officials assume that US President Donald Trump will reiterate his demand that Canada drastically increase defense spending". Canada is one of eight NATO countries out of 30 that are estimated to be falling short of the NATO defense spending target of 2 percent, according to Canadian broadcaster CBC News, which reported that Ottawa was estimated to spend about 1.37 percent of GDP in 2024. 1.37%。Canadian Defense Minister Bill Blair told CBC News last month that it was "absolutely achievable" for Canada to meet the spending level in two years. Public Safety Canada announced an expansion of its $1.3 billion border security plan on Feb 4, introducing measures such as appointing a fentanyl monitor to enhance interdiction efforts with US counterparts.2月4日,加拿大公共安全部宣布扩大一项投资13亿美元的边境安全计划,并采取任命芬太尼监测员等措施以加强与美国的拦截合作。"It's necessary and should have been made regardless of President Trump's demands," Chapnick said. "While the US president's stance may have slightly accelerated moves that would have and should have been made anyway, the decision aligns with Canada's preexisting security objectives," he said. M. Scott Taylor, former president and fellow of the Canadian Economics Association, said he expects the tariff situation to be resolved within the 30-day window and that a Canadian response to harden the border and start renegotiating the trade deal will happen. Canada could and should liberalize trade in dairy products as a means to placate American demands," he told China Daily. However, he noted that the bilateral relationship will remain challenging as long as Trump is in office. Taylor said if the tariffs remain in place, it will underscore the need for Canada to diversify export markets. And significant opposition to tariffs is likely to come from the US business community. For Canadian consumers and businesses, Taylor predicted that the Canadian dollar is likely to fall, driving up the price of groceries and imported inputs. He said he anticipates a small uptick in inflation, but it will be temporary. "If the 25 percent tariffs become permanent, it would lower Canadian GDP and limit our growth prospects," he said. Sui Sui, a professor at the Ted Rogers School of Management at Toronto Metropolitan University, characterized the US tariffs as a form of economic imperialism. She argued that the US imposes tariffs as a tool of pressure against countries that do not comply with its demands. Sui said that because more than 70 percent of Canada's exports go to the US, the levies have the potential to severely undermine integrated supply chains. Sui said she expects the tariffs to lead to higher costs for businesses and Canadian consumers. If our exports decline, it's not just businesses that are hurt—that would increase the price of groceries, as well as other imported products," she said, adding the government would also have less money to fund social welfare, infrastructure and education. In retaliation against the US tariffs, Canada announced its own reciprocal tariffs. But Sui said Canadian tariffs should focus on targeting certain sectors in the US so it can have a strong economic impact but minimize damage to its own economy. A broad boycott of all US goods isn't realistic," she said. Instead, Sui suggested focusing on companies that previously had Canadian manufacturing operations but relocated to the US due to US pressure.“大范围抵制所有美国商品是不现实的,”她说。 We can encourage them to return by requiring more domestic sourcing and production," she said.“我们可以通过增加国内采购和生产来鼓励它们回流,”她说。Sui said that Canada should strategically impose tariffs on goods produced in states that strongly support Trump, as well as luxury products. "Liquor and high-end goods are fair targets because they have minimal impact on ordinary Canadians." She argued that Canada can work with other nations negatively affected by US trade policies. retaliationn.

Dr. Laura welcomes Giselle Kovary, a generational expert and Head of Learning and Development at Optimus SBR, to talk about the different generations in today's workplaces. Giselle has 25 years of experience in learning and development, has worked with over 26 Fortune 500 companies, and is the co-author of two books: Loyalty Unplugged and Upgrade Now. Dr. Laura and Giselle explore the differences in the five generations at work and how to harness their unique strengths and skills into a cohesive workplace. Giselle defines the five generations by age group as Traditionalists, from 79 to 100; Baby Boomers, from 60 to 78; Gen X, from 44 to 59; Millennials, from 29 to 43; and Gen Z, from 12 to 28. She also stresses, however, that age alone does not define a generation; how a person identifies plays a key part as well. For example, a Millennial may identify as Traditionalist in mindset and this needs to be accounted for when assessing generational differences. Giselle and Dr. Laura discuss how generational identities assist understanding at a macro level but that within organizations it's vital to understand employees at a micro level, as individuals, as well. Giselle offers insights into where different generational identities collaborate well and where clashes often occur, based on her studies and experience. These insights serve to highlight where organizations must strengthen communication and understanding in order to best utilize the strengths each generation brings to work.“Not everyone in a generation is going to align with this. But after over 20 years, I have literally thousands of anecdotes of when people will come up and say, oh my goodness, you just described me, or you described my children, you described my partner. And it's because there is enough of a baseline to say this is what this generation believes and thinks, and we want to look at it from that perspective. The other piece… is it's less important the year you're born and more about your generational identity. How do you identify?” Giselle KovaryWatch this episode on Dr. Laura's YouTube channelAbout Giselle Kovary, M.A.:As Head of Learning & Development at Optimus SBR, Giselle is dedicated to building strategies and programs that help clients target, motivate and engage employees in order to increase performance and productivity. Steve Preda here with the Management Blueprint Podcast, and my guest now is Andre Laplume, professor at the Ted Rogers School of Management at Toronto Metropolitan University and the author of Spinout Ventures: Transitioning from Employees to Entrepreneurs. Andre, welcome to the show. Thank you, Steve. Thanks for the invitation. I look forward to it. So, Andrei, let me ask you, what is your personal Why and what are you doing to manifest it? Yeah, I mean, my personal Why, so I'm a researcher, right? That's my main profession, and I research startups, and entrepreneurship is my main topic of focus. And I've been doing this for about a decade. And what I found out and what led to this book actually is that most prospective entrepreneurs are not really being coached very well that I feel they're being coached down. Perhaps a more mythical path about what entrepreneurship really is and many of them think that entrepreneurship is something they can do at 19 years old or 20 years old, and sometimes it is, but, realistically, a lot of the startups that we're seeing today, the more sophisticated startups, they aren't founded by 19 and 20 year olds. Most of them are actually founded by fairly seasoned employees who have years of experience at a larger company and who have decided to leave and start a company. And I think that the more that I did research on this phenomenon, which we're calling spinouts or spinout ventures, where employees leave to create their own ventures, the more I found out that they were very prominent and also more successful than other types of startups. So that's really what led me down this pathway, that, okay, we're living in a culture where the wrong narrative about entrepreneurship is being pushed, and so my purpose in this is to try to change that narrative and to make it more realistic. And also, I think that that sets better expectations for real entrepreneurs so that they don't believe the myth. Yeah, that is so interesting that you mentioned this myth, because I think it has its uses, but it also has its drawbacks. I think the uses of it is due to a popular idea of entrepreneurship. I think it's not a bad thing. I do think that entrepreneurs need a level of dreaminess or ability to dream in order to get started because the flip side of it is that experts very rarely start companies because they see so many pitfalls and so many potentials to go wrong that it paralyzes them. So in some ways, I think there is a use in mythologizing it. But on the other hand, I do agree. And I think there are statistics that the average founder is actually not 23 years old, but something like 45 or 48 years old or something like that. That's right. I think it's 45. 45. And I remember when I first heard about Ray Kroc and that he started M...

In today's environment, innovation is recognized as a critical business practice, but do companies encourage innovation to the fullest? Do business leaders feel secure in allowing ideas to grow and potentially sprout into a completely new organization? In this episode, Dr. Andre LePlume shares insights from his extensive research on spinout ventures explaining how companies can benefit from encouraging employees to form internal corporate ventures and pursue innovative ideas. Based on his book, Spinout-Ventures-Transitioning-Employees-Entrepreneurs, he also expresses his view that the best new companies aren't founded in garages, but rather come from a place of keen knowledge and understanding of the needs in a market. Episode Highlights: - Defining Spinout Ventures: Spinouts are created using knowledge and resources transferred from a parent organization. They can ultimately benefit the company even if the spinout founder creates a new company as it may offer needed services. - Encouraging Innovation: Andre points out the need for businesses to create an innovative culture, allowing employees the freedom to explore and develop new ideas internally and externally. - Success in Spinouts - These founders typically have greater experience, are more knowledgeable, and have positive support systems compared to other founders. - Case Study - Zoom: Zoom emerged as a successful spinout from Cisco, highlighting the potential of spinouts to revolutionize industries. - Navigating Legal Challenges: He notes the evolving legal landscape around non-competes and intellectual property, and how businesses can manage these issues to encourage spinouts. - Recommended Reading: "The Innovator's Dilemma" by Clayton Christensen; "Crossing the Chasm" by Geoffrey Moore; and "Zero to One" by Peter Thiel. Episode Notes What would it take to increase the power of figure skaters so they can influence the decisions that govern their sport? Where else in the Olympic movement is progress being made? What can we learn from sports where players' unions and collective bargaining are common? To answer some of these questions, I turned to Rob Koehler, the Director General of Global Athlete, an organization that helps athletes to organize and speak out on the issues they care about. Rob was previously the Deputy Director General of the World Anti-Doping Agency, the most senior of many positions he held at WADA between 2002 and 2018. He was also vice-chair of the WADA Independent Observer team at the Sochi Olympics. Rob is based in Montreal, Canada. I hope this episode gives you a taste of what is possible when athletes organize and use their voices to push for fairer sport! Transcript is available here. The transition from being a doer to a leader can be a difficult one for many people. Doers are outstanding individual contributors who, based on their performance in their current role, are promoted with the assumption that they will also be a good manager. In reality, some doers never become leaders. Instead, they become “super-doers” who micromanage the work of their team members with a running commentary on how they would perform particular tasks. Both the new manager and people on the team become frustrated. On today's episode, we hear from Vanessa Judelman, an author and consultant who helps people make this transition from doer to leader. Vanessa is the President of Mosaic People Development, a company that develops leaders who inspire great results. Over the last 20 years, she has coached and developed thousands of people across the globe who want to be strong leaders. In her book, Mastering Leadership: What it Takes to Lead in Today's Fast Paced World, Vanessa identifies the key problems facing leaders today and provides compelling solutions for the most common leadership challenges. Her goal, through the book, is to create confident, self-aware, and strategic leaders. Vanessa who works with a wide-array of world-class organizations, is often quoted in the media on issues related to leadership, and lectures in the Ted Rogers School of Management. In short, Vanessa brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our conversation today. On this episode you'll learn: The core skills that people must learn when they move into a leadership role The three pillars of leadership success How to make leadership learning stick The importance of boundaries to stay mentally fit and focused Whether some people are simply not suited for leadership roles Learn more about Vanessa and her company and work at: https://www.mosaicpd.com Facebook: http://facebook.com/MosaicPeopleDevelopment Instagram: instagram.com/vanessajudelman LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/vanessajudelman Twitter: @mosaicpd Connect with Dr. Mike: Website: https://www.drmikepatterson.com Book: https://www.missionfirstpeoplealwaysbook.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drmichaellpatterson Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therealdrmikepatterson/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/drmikepatterson Buy The Book!: Mission First People Always Episode Minute By Minute: 0:02 What's inside today's episode 2:16 Get to know Vanessa Judelman 5:05 Why most promotions don't work out 9:02 How Vanessa learned about leading well 16:33 Self-awareness is critical for growth 18:34 Change and adjust your leadership situationally 22:17 How to execute more statically 26:00 Some types of change take time 31:04 Leadership is a skill set

This week I had an amazing conversation with mindfulness expert Dr. Ellen Choi on Sharpen Your Edge Live. Ellen is a mindfulness researcher, speaker, teacher, coach, yogi, and meditator that is obsessed (in a mostly healthy way) with wellbeing, mental health, personal growth, and living with purpose. She is an organizational social psychologist who trained at the London School of Economics and completed her doctoral degree at the Ivey School of Business. In particular, she studies the efficacy of mindfulness training on performance under pressure, resilience, and errors. Ellen has taught and researched mindfulness with corporate executives, lawyers, MBA students, elementary school students, police recruits, and in health care settings. Ellen is an Assistant Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University in the Ted Rogers School of Management. She teaches organizational behaviour, which includes topics like decision making, team effectiveness, leadership, and motivation. On this episode Ellen walks me through a series of mindfulness exercises that you can follow along with and implement into your daily life. You can learn more about Ellen and her research at drellenchoi.com. Enjoy! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dr-greg-wells/support
