Our Off The Shelf podcast guest this week is our former captain and goalkeeper, Paul Robinson!Join us as the pod returns to Yorkshire as 'Robbo' takes us through his football journey from York City academy, seizing his opportunity at Leeds United to be their first-choice goalkeeper and his career-defining move to Spurs at 23 years old where his appearances in Lilywhite quickly established him as England's number one before concluding his four-year spell with Carling Cup success in 2008.This is a fascinating conversation that charts scoring *that* Premier League goal against Watford, the pressures of the Three Lions' 'Golden Generation', recovering from the life-threatening repercussions of an operation in the latter stages of his career and discussing his traits in relation to the 'modern' goalkeeper.Watch on SPURSPLAY - https://play.tottenhamhotspur.com/homeFor more on Tottenham Hotspur:Club App - tottenhamhotspur.com/spurs-official-appYouTube - youtube.com/channel/UCEg25rdRZXg32iwai6N6l0w?sub_confirmation=1Twitter - https://twitter.com/SpursOfficialTikTok - tiktok.com/@spursofficial?lang=enInstagram - instagram.com/spursofficialFacebook - facebook.com/TottenhamHotspurSpurs Shop - shop.tottenhamhotspur.com Hosted on Acast. "Having followed up the Battle of Old Trafford with successive wins over fellow title contenders Newcastle United, Liverpool and Chelsea to move to the Premier League's summit, you would think that the feel-good factor would be flying around London Colney as the end of October drew near. However our European form and the lengthy trips to Moscow and Kyiv were beginning to take their toll, and a Carling Cup tie scheduled just two days after our trip to Charlton Athletic meant Arsene Wenger had his work cut out trying to keep our league form on track." In July 2022, the PSL announced that the Carling Cup, historically played between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, will be scrapped as a whole, with the Carling Knockout Cup taking its place. This tournament will see all 16 PSL teams taking part, with the fans of Mzansi having the final say, by voting for their 4 favourite teams, to partake in the matches. These changes has been heavily welcomed by football fans around the entire country, as it allows teams, other than the Soweto Giants, to have an opportunity to play for silverware. This cup has replaced the Telkom Knockout Cup, after close to 3 decades of enjoyment. The Carling Knockout Cup will follow the same format of the Telkom Knockout Cup,, where the 16 DStv Premiership sides will be drawn in a straight knockout tournament until a winner is determined. On the latest episode of the Fan Reaction Show, Mzansi Reacts to Carling Knockout Cup, which will feature all 16 teams from the Dstv Premiership. The fans express their excitement for the competition to begin and share their thoughts on the format. SL Radio on SoccerLaduma.co.za
From Dundalk to Wembley, Colin Larkin enjoyed a long career in football playing for teams like Wolves, Mansfield and Chesterfield from 1999 through to 2014. He was part of the Roy McFarland Chesterfield squad that had an amazing Carling Cup run in 2006 beating the likes of Wolves, Man City and West Ham along the way. Colin joined me to talk about the qualities of the pressing forward, falling out with managers over a pub lasagne, punishing runs through Chesterfield town centre and his new career in teaching.
Stamford Chidge, Jonathan Kydd and Mark Meehan take a look back at the 2005-06 Chelsea season.Chelsea entered their centenery season as Premier League Champions with a new kit and a new badge to celebrate it. Hopes were high that more trophies would be won this season with the 'Special One' at the helm, but could we be become back-to-back Champions?Chelsea secured their first trophy of the season in a 2-1 win against nemesis Arsenal in the Community Shield; notable mainly for Drogba scoring against Arsenal, in a final and bullying their defence in the process. Our defence of the title could not have started better with 7 wins, no goals conceded and 13 scored. By the end of September Chelsea were already 10 points clear of their nearest rivals, Man Utd, at the top of the table. The Champions League was proving a little more troublesome, with Chelsea in the same group as Liverpool, the current holders. While points were dropped at Anfield in a 0-0 draw, Chelsea turned up at Anfield a couple of days later in the league to inflict a 4-1 defeat on them. Liverpool's biggest home defeat since 1969 and Chelsea's biggest win at Anfield. The only blip in the first half of the season were away defeats to Real Betis in the Champions' League, a 1-0 away defeat to Man Utd and Charlton knocking us out of the Carling Cup on penalties. Typically, Jose claimed that our impregnable home form remained in tact as losing on penalties didn't count!December was negotiated expertly, including the first 'Double' over Arsenal for the first time in 36 years in a 2-0 win, the last time we would play at Highbury. Chelsea finished the year top of the league 11 points clear with 55 points, above Utd on 44 and equalling last season's points tally and record at this stage of the season, with one draw and one defeat. Chelsea had played 38 games in 2005 and won 101 points a remarkable feat not told enough. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Chelsea author Mark Meehan to look back at Chelsea's 2004-05 season. In part two, we pick up the story in January 2005. Under the management of Jose Mourinho, Chelsea were top of the league, 7 points clear with 55 points, the largest points tally at this stage in the PL ever, and were fighting for trophies on all fronts with qualification for the Champions' League round of 16 achieved with 13 points and a Carling Cup semi-final against Man Utd to look forward to in the New Year as well as the FA Cup.All eyes were on Stamford Bridge as we took on Man Utd in the first leg of the Carling Cup semi-final. A cagey 0-0 with Utd using every trick in the book was followed by a 2-1 win at Old Trafford to seal a place in the final at the Millenium stadium in Cardiff. The arrival of Abramovich and Mourinho notwithstanding, this was Chelsea's 12th cup semi-final in 12 seasons and the first time defeat had been inflicted on Alex Ferguson's Utd in a domestic semi-final.Back in the Premier League Chelsea passed the stern 'can they do it on a cold night in Blackburn' test standing up, literally to the physical intimidation meted out by Mark Hughes dirty side. Arguably this was the match that sealed the title for Chelsea, at least in terms of belief. February and March brought a plethora of high profile and must win matches which was to become the norm for Chelsea througout Abramovich's tenure. Newcastle knocked us out of the FA Cup, ending the pursuit of all four trophies. Barcelona beat Chelsea 2-1 at the Nou Camp in a controversial match where we had the upper hand until Drogba was sent off by Anders Frisk for a dubious second yellow. And in the space of a week, Chelsea defeated Liverpool in the Carling Cup final having gone 1-0 down after a Riise goal on 1 minute and rescued by a Steve Gerrard goal on 79 minutes, before Drogba and Kezman settled matters in a 3-2 win.March saw the return of Barcelona to Stamford Bridge and one of the greatest matches ever seen in the club's 100 year history as Chelsea stormed to a 3-0 lead inside 20 minutes only to be pegged back by a remarkable Ronaldinho goal which left the crowd silent in consternation, before John Terry ensured a 4-2 win on the night and a 5-4 win on aggregate. A quarter-final tie against Bayern Munich was Chelsea's reward and another classic played out in the first leg at Stamford Bridge, almost matching the Barcelona match for excitement and quality, with one of Frank Lampard's best goals for the club a highlight in a 4-2 win. Chelsea got the job done in the last match to be played at the Olympiastadion albeit with a couple of late goals from Bayern to cause more anxiety than we needed.Attention moved back to the Premier League. Would Chelsea win it against Fulham on the 50th anniversary to the day of our our first league title? Had we not drawn at home to Arsenal we would have, but we were destined to wait until the Bolton away match, just as Jose Mourinho had predicted months ago. The small matter of the club's second and consecutive Champions' League semi-final against Liverpool preceded Bolton. Thanks to a solitary ghost goal by Luis Garcia at Anfield, Chelsea were denied a final appearance again and our modern rivalry and enmity with Liverpool and Rafa Benitez was confirmed. It should have been crushing, but in truth it wasn't, because a few days earlier, Chelsea defeated Bolton thanks to two Frank Lampard goals to lift the Premier League for the first time in their history. Many of us never believed we'd see the day; tears were shed, friends were embraced and a massive party in the Kings Road ensued. Chelsea's greatest ever season? No doubt! Hosted on Acast. Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Chelsea author Mark Meehan to look back at Chelsea's 2004-05 season. On the 2nd June 2004, something very special happened at Chelsea. Jose Mourinho arrived proclaiming himself the 'Special One' and things at Chelsea would arguably never quite be the same again. Bolstered by the transfers of Petr Cech, Paulo Ferreira, Arjen Robben, Didier Drogba and Ricardo Carvalho hopes were high that Chelsea might go one better than the 2nd place in the league from the previous season and win their first Premier League title; their first league title for 50 years and in what would be their centenary year. The bouyant mood of the summer seemed justified as Chelsea remained unbeaten in all competitions until October 16th. But after the 1-0 away defeat to Man City, they picked up the pace again, knocking Arsenal off top spot on November 6th after a 1-0 win at home to Everton.Critics and naysayers accused Chelsea of being boring and functional as they ground out a lot of 1-0 wins, but once the flying wingers of Damien Duff and Arjen Robben returned from injury, Chelsea went up through the gears putting four past opponents regularly and playing scintillating football in the process. Equally important, they had not been beaten by title rivals such as Arsenal, Man Utd and Liverpool and had dismissed bottom half teams with relative ease, banana skins and glorious unpredictability seemingly banished by our 'special' manager.By the end of the year Chelsea were top of the league, 7 points clear with 55 points, the largest points tally at this stage in the PL ever, and were fighting for trophies on all fronts with qualification for the Champions' League round of 16 achieved with 13 points and a Carling Cup semi-final against Man Utd to look forward to in the New Year as well as the FA Cup.Historically, Chelsea supporters would be asking the question "what could possibly go wrong" with knowing cynicism but at the turn of the year many genuinely felt, absolutely nothing. Goalkeeper Barry Roche joined Chesterfield on trial in the summer of 2005 and featured in friendlies against opposition including Matlock, Scarborough and...Malaga! He played well over 100 games for the Spireites with the high point most definitely being the Carling Cup run of 2006 when we came up against the likes of Manchester City and West Ham. Barry joined me on the podcast to talk about cup highs, league lows, finding resilience as a young professional and his long career in the sport.
Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Chelsea authors Mark Meehan and Mark Worrall to look back at Chelsea's 2003-04 season. On July 1st 2003, Chelsea and English football changed for ever. Roman Abramovich bought debt ridden Chelsea for £60m and then embarked on the biggest spending spree ever seen; £111m on 11 players including Glen Johnson; Wayne Bridge; Damien Duff; Geremi; Juan Sebastien Veron; Joe Cole; Adrian Mutu; Hernan Crespo and Claude Makalele. Surely this woudl mean a serious tilt at Chelsea's first league title since 1955?Claudio Ranieri remained manager and he must have felt like a kid in a sweet shop. The new look Chelsea started well with their first surprise defeat at home to Besiktas in the Champions' League and a less surprising but routinely disappointing defeat away to Arsenal in October. Nevertheless, Chelsea were top of the league in October and November with some impressive wins against Newcastle and Man Utd in the league and a 4-0 drubbing away to Lazio in the Champions League. However, December brought a couple of blips with the 2-1 defeat at home to Bolton and 4-2 defeat at Charlton which left Chelsea in 3rd at the end of the year. We had also been knocked out of the Carling Cup by Aston Villa who were third from bottom at the time. This was not what Roman Abramovich expected having spent a fortune on players, even though Chelsea had accrued their biggest points total ever for that stage of the season. Rumours abounded that Abramovich, aided by new Chief Executive Peter Kenyon were on the look out for a new manager, not helped with Sven Goran Erikson spotted next to Abramovich in the director's box. Maybe Ranieri had too many good players to choose from and as ever, could not resist the urge to tinker? All this while the best performing players were all players who were at the Club before Abramovich arrived, with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Frank Lampard and John Terry all prominent. So, all to play for in the second half of the season, but could Chelsea hunt down Arsenal, who, ominously had yet to be beaten in the season thus far. Coleman Had A Dream Summer Specials - Owain Tudur Jones. Dai and Ruth were fortunate to spend a good hour or so chatting to Owain Tudur Jones, about all things football. Owain discussed his move from North Wales playing for Bangor, down to South Wales and Swansea City. In that he talks about winning the LDV Vans Trophy, and then losing in the playoff final weeks later at the same location. Owain talked openly about his injury problems, how the whole thing made him feel and the difficulties which came with it. We talked about his move to Norwich and the debut disaster where he lost 7-1 before that side went on to be promoted. He talks openly about his trip to Vegas, as well as working with Paul Lambert and Roberto Martinez. The conversation then turned to Wales, and his time working for 3 different managers at very different times in his career. Toshack, Speed and Coleman we very different men, and Owain talks through them all. He discusses his first cap, and his surprise call up to the Wales squad for the Carling Cup of Nations in Ireland. All in all, a brilliant and wide ranging conversation, whether you are a Wales fan, an Owain fan, or a fan of any of his clubs. We hope you enjoy...
Alex McLeish spent almost four years as Birmingham City manager and will go down in history as one of their most successful. The Scot masterminded that wonderful win over Arsenal at Wembley to secure the Carling Cup, whilst he also oversaw promotion from the Championship and a ninth-placed finish in the Premier League. There were also two relegations before he shocked the Second City by crossing the divide to become Aston Villa manager in 2011. With all that in mind - and the fact he worked under Carson Yeung - McLeish has quite the story to tell. Alex Dicken sat down with the current Scotland manager to discuss his time at St Andrew’s. He talks all of the above, and sheds some light on some of the characters in Blues’ dressing room during an exciting time in the club’s history. Juninho enjoyed three spells with Middlesbrough and it’s fair to say it was an exciting time for the club. The Little Fella played in three cups finals for Boro – plus a replay – and was part of the team that lifted the club’s first major honour. In the second part of Philip Tallentire’s exclusive interview with Juninho, the Brazilian playmaker looks back on his time with Boro following his highly-publicised arrival in October 1995.He admits he found it hard to adjust to the North-east climate but was grateful for the warm welcome he received from the Teesside public. That special relationship remains to this day.Juninho talks about reaching the Coca-Cola and FA Cup finals and reminisces about the heartbreak of relegation. He admits he was wrong not to take part in the open top bus parade after the Wembley loss to Chelsea and explains why, with a World Cup just around the corner, he had to join Atletico Madrid in the summer of 1997.Juninho returned on loan in 1999 but it wasn’t a happy period as he struggled to overcome the serious injury he suffered in Spain. His third spell with Boro came in 2002, just weeks after he helped Brazil win the World Cup. He talks about his international dream coming true and his delight at winning the Carling Cup in Cardiff.Juninho admitted he didn’t enjoy the same relationship with Steve McClaren as he did with Bryan Robson and regrets leaving to join Celtic when he did in 2004 as Boro began their European adventure.Hear him talk about these issues and much more by listing to part two of an fascinating interview, available now, for the first time on podcast. Pete, Dan, and Alfred discuss positive Arsenal goodness post-Chelsea and pre-league cup
“I am going to be a brilliant player,” Bebé said. He wasn’t. To our surprise, given his mediocre showing for the reserves, he made his United debut six days later in a Carling Cup win at Scunthorpe (Ferguson, scouting Champions League opponents Valencia, didn’t see Bebé play then either). It was the first of seven senior appearances. Two even brought goals, albeit in fortunate fashion; a shot that looped up off the Wolves defender George Elokobi and over the goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey and a Champions League goal against Bursaspor, courtesy of a deflection off Ali Tandoğan." Episode Eighty Nine of the Blizzard Podcast looks back on 'Bye-bye Bebé' by Richard Jolly, originally published in Issue Fourteen in September 2014. In it he explores one of the most mystifying transfers of recent years - that of the unknown Portuguese forward Bebé to Manchester United. Read the full article here: https://www.theblizzard.co.uk/article/bye-bye-bebe "Yet his shortcomings were apparent and his United career came to an abrupt halt after the 2011 FA Cup win over Crawley. Ferguson’s team were dreadful and Bebé and Obertan, the two wingers, were the worst of a poor bunch. Their non-league counterparts looked more accomplished players." Right then, time for this week's Arsecast, and it's Danny heavy episode. After analysing some of Danny Mills' punditry, I'm joined by Danny Karbassiyoon, a man whose only Arsenal goal came when he left Mills in his wake at Man City in a Carling Cup game. We chat about his new book 'The Arsenal Yankee', his time at Arsenal and how his career was cut short by injury. We also discuss his move into scouting, how that changes your view of the game, finding talents like Joel Campbell and Gedion Zelalem, how you can be a top youth player and find the professional game more of a struggle, and lots more. Danny's book is out now, you can get all the details on the website thearsenalyankee.com, or follow him on Twitter @dkarbassiyoon. We've also got a couple of signed copies to give away in a competition and there's the usual waffle in there too, for all you waffle fans. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week's podcast comes 'live' from the Springfield public house, fittingly enough just yards away from where our beloved Wigan Athletic where based when Dave Whelan bought them lock, stock and barrel 20 years ago, not much has changed in that time, though I think they may have switched to energy saving light bulbs! This week the usual crowd are joined by Alan 'NRP' Moore, Alan talks to us about Latics United and what his hopes are for the future. We conduct the usual business of looking back and the last couple of games, though unusually we are all quite pleased with the way things went.We have a plug or two for some upcoming events, the FAB meeting on Tuesday and Dan's new book cover for the Panini story. There is the usual previewof the forthcoming game, this week it's Leeds on the agenda. We finish off with a discussion about Dave Whelan, just what did he actually do for us, a new ground, promotion through the divisions, Premier League for eight seasons, making the Carling Cup final, winning the FA cup and going on a European tour, yeah, apart from all that what did he actually do?

The end of the week is approaching and what a fascinating day of football yesterday, especially in the Carling Cup. Premier League leaders Chelsea fell 4-3 to Newcastle in an instant cup classic. Chelsea trailed 3-1 in the second half and went down to ten men through injury. They fought back resiliently to level the scoreline before Shola Ameobi (Ambeoi-like) headed in the winner from a corner. Not a good time to be a supporter on Merseyside. After Everton crashed out to Brentford on penalties the day before, the red half of Merseyside also fell on penalties, this time to Northampton Town. But England wasn't the only action from yesterday: Cesena finally lost, Inter moved top, Roma lost again, and Milan found themselves in another 1-1 scoreline. Yes, there was even a thriller in MLS when Josh Wolff scored for Kansas City in the 96th minute to defeat Houston 4-3.
