This week I announce the passing of my best friend and friend of the show MFC. One this episode I revisit a conversation Malcolm and I had and the one simple question he asked me that changed the way I think about ideas. The question was, "What's holding you back."I came up with my top three reasons we don't act on our ideas. If you think of more, please comment.I do not talk extensively about the services but in time I will dedicate a whole show to that topic.

Sri Lanka's New MFC Clause — Have "Contorts" Arrived in Sovereign Debt? The doctrine of tortious interference with contracts is one of several that sits at the intersection of tort and contract law. These "contorts" confuse law students — lawyers and law professors too! — but can be important in practice. If not anticipated, they can create problems for unsuspecting parties and lawyers. Has Sri Lanka's novel Most Favored Creditor clause created problems for creditors who participated in the country's restructuring? The MFC clause is confusing in places. It simultaneously seems to contemplate Sri Lanka striking a deal with holdouts (after litigation ends) and to quite aggressively try to prevent such a deal from happening. We discuss whether this creates risks for restructuring creditors and wonder why such an aggressive clause was viewed as necessary. You may not recognize this show by name, but Columbia, Maryland 1998 is a pivotal show in Pearl Jam history due to one moment that was immortalized on a record title Live On Two Legs (yes, it does feel weird to say that sometimes). This is the first instance that a little improv was introduced prior to the performance of MFC that to this day is known to the Pearl Jam Faithfull as Untitled. This episode spends a significant portion of time focusing on the impact that this song has made over time, it's importance to fans when hearing it on the live album, the meaning of the lyrics at the time of performance and how it ties in to another improv from an earlier era. While Untitled dominates conversation here, there are plenty of topics that will focus on other stellar performances from this set. Hail, Hail opens this show for the fourth and final time to date and we'll discuss the dynamic of it kicking off a night. Immortality, State Of Love And Trust, Mankind, Alive, Black and Last Kiss will also big highlights from this show. And what does Charlie Sheen and Chevy Chase have to do with this episode that we'll need an extended conversation on? Joining us for this episode is our Patron, Sheehan Perera (IG: @concertpants) who will share his great stories about this being his first show and celebrating it with his friends he grew up with in Malaysia. Also, the Gear Guru chimes in during this version of Do The Evolution to break down how Stone is creating a "washing" sound during the solo. Finding and fighting against national security threats is a crucial job. In any election cycle, it's even more necessary as political enemies and disinformation can pose serious threats to our democratic process. As a career veteran and defense specialist, Vance Cryer helps spotlight the threats we may face in the intersection between polarization and national defense and how we can overcome them. Vance describes America's external threats, what they stand to gain by a weakened America, and how they are using America's division as a tool to undermine democracy.Vance Cryer was born in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1968. To help pay his way through school, Vance worked as a journeyman plumber and also helped his grandfather in a business that prewired new houses for telephone service. During his first semester of school, he joined the Air Force ROTC. He then got a job at the local airport filling airplanes with gas and scraping bugs off windshields, using the cash he earned to pay for flying lessons thereby fulfilling his lifelong dream of being a pilot. By the end of that first semester, he contracted with the Marines to compete for one of two slots in north Texas for Officer Candidate School. Vance's 27-year career with the Marines took him through flight school in Pensacola, Florida; to Top Level School at the National War College in Washington, D.C., where he earned a master's degree in national strategic studies; to four AV-8B squadron tours, including as the commanding officer of Marine Attack Squadron 211. He completed six combat tours in Iraq and served two tours of duty at the Pentagon-Headquarters Marine Corps in the Department of Aviation. In 2013, he was promoted to colonel and commanded the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit at Camp Pendleton. In 2016, he was handpicked by Secretary Ray Mabus as the Marine Military Assistant to the Secretary of the Navy.In August 2018, Vance retired from active duty in the Marine Corps and is now serving as a Director for Special Programs at Lockheed Martin Missiles & Fire Control (MFC). He serves as the liaison between MFC and Lockheed Martin Aerospace, working on the leading edge of missile and sensor technologies and future capabilities.Thank you to Starts with Us for their collaboration on this series. Listen in to the latest episode of Fisheries Gone Wild!! On this episode we take a dive into Southern Flounder, the states failed management approach and how we got to this point. The state has truly failed the public angler , we have now been shut out of another public trust fishery here in North Carolina with no recreational southern flounder season this year. Why did this happen? How in the world did our public trust fishereies get to this point? Why is the public angler taking the brunt of the States failure to manage our fisheries and what can you do about it? Now is the time to become informed on the issues, contact your legislaters, send that email raising your concerns, become apart of the process. We need your voice now more than ever!! For nearly three decades, North Carolina has managed its marine and estuarine resources under the auspices of the Fisheries Reform Act. It sets forth a series of policies and regulations that are overly cumbersome, unflexible, and inefficient. By design, changes needed to modify the base FMP take an average of 3-5 years to enact. And no matter what those changes need to be, a politically appointed MFC can undo those years of work on a whim. Because we are mandated to manage our fisheries resources through separate FMPs, too many problems slip through the cracks, too many issues can be purposely ignored. All the while, we continue to watch species after species fall into decline. A few examples follow: → From the speckled trout FMP, it is noted that small mesh gill nets are very effective at removing 14” trout, with very few speckled trout discarded as bycatch. Because of this, the commercial industry claims that this is a clean, selective gear and that they should be given a greater share of the fishery because they will fish it more effectively than public anglers will. What isn't mentioned or considered in developing future management measures for speckled trout is the effectiveness that those same nets have when it comes to removing 14” (sublegal), striped bass and red drum. Rather than be allowed to recruit to their respective fisheries, these fish are discarded and left to serve as fodder for scavengers. In addition, the mullet fishery is closely tied to the speckled trout fishery, with each species being listed as the primary incidental catch for the other. If mullet fishermen catch trout and trout fishermen catch mullet, then the two species should co-managed to mitigate the bycatch losses that the coming restrictions in each amendment to each FMP will generate. In other words, gill net restrictions in one fishery should be applied to both fisheries. → When it comes to striped bass in NC, we commonly hear, “It's all about flow.” Clearly, it isn't as good flow rates in the ASMA for the past five years have led to nothing but failed spawns. The real issues are: (a) a lack of big fish, the best spawners, which DMF stats show have been historically harvested in gill nets, (b) an increasing problem from blue catfish through food competition and/or direct consumption of juvenile stripers, (c) climatic changes altering spawning cycles, or zooplankton availability, or egg density, or etc... → Shrimp trawling in our estuaries continues to destroy millions of juvenile spot, croaker, weakfish, Southern flounder, and blue crab. (a) We continue to cut the legs off of spot, croaker, and weakfish recovery by trawling through a key secondary nursery habitat, the Pamlico Sound, for the coastwide populations of these species. (b) Ignoring blue crab bycatch in this industry is certainly contributing to the troubled status of that fishery where the latest series of management measures has failed, again. (c) Failing to protect a documented Southern flounder hotspot in the latest version of the shrimp, Southern flounder, and CHPP plans will only further hamper its recovery. → The benefits of SAV habitats are undeniable. In fact, they are one of the most critical areas throughout the coast of NC. Failing to protect them because of the recommendations of standing ACs that are dominated by the commercial industry shows only a willingness to genuflect to that industry. → Continuing to allow mechanical harvest of our few remaining oyster reefs: (a) removes more key habitat for numerous species, (b) promotes diminished water quality, and (c) leads to shoreline loss as oyster reefs diminish wave energy during storms. With no synergy, no connectivity between plans, failures such as this have become the rule instead of the exception. We will not save our fisheries until we can find a way to manage the system as a whole. Remember your basic biology. Our estuarine system is a resilient, yet fragile one full of complex habitats, food webs, and trophic levels that are all interdependent. How many important finfish species forage on crabs, mullet, menhaden, shrimp, croaker, and more? How often do flounder, stripers, trout, redfish, black drum, and sheepshead occupy the same habitat areas? What untold damage is done by excessive shrimp trawling in Pamlico Sound? How much longer can we afford to ignore the subtle complexities of our estuaries? It is a unique system that should be managed and protected as a whole.
This week, more than 500 bold Minnesotans filled the Capitol rotunda, rallying against the so-called ERA, which would insert gender ideology and abortion until birth into the Minnesota Constitution, while creating new threats for religious freedom. It's tour time! Pearl Jam is about to get back on the road for the first leg of their Dark Matter tour on the west coast, and we're continuing to focus on past shows from the locations that they'll be playing in May. This episode takes us to Portland, Oregon from the 2000 Binaural tour. The back half of the tour that year featured some of the best shows that Pearl Jam has ever played starting with their 10th anniversary show in Vegas and ending on an instant classic to end the tour in Seattle. This show in Portland checks every single box from what you want of that era - Matt Cameron's absolute dominance of the drum kit, Ed's fierce and ear shattering vocals and Mike McCready's spacy, yet piercing solos from the left side. The overall theme for this show was how the band started off on fire and almost never took the foot off the pedal. A six song kick off of Sometimes, Grievance, Corduroy, Go, Hail, Hail and Dissident made a statement and set the expectations immediately. We'll get into other massive moments such as a phenomenal stretch featuring Untitled, MFC and Habit in a row, a different take on the Man Trilogy now featuring a feminine presence, but most importantly of all, we get an improv before closing out encore 1 with Rearviewmirror that is the absolute stand out from this show. Javier is back and will break down Stone's solo on MFC and a little bit of how Ed had a great show on the axe specifically highlighting a banger version of Habit. But most importantly, we take listener questions about the upcoming Dark Matter tour and some of your expectations and inquiries of how it will all go down!

He describes his setup with a crayfish fly pattern. 28:28 - He describes how he uses the tip of the fly line to his advantage. He always casts slightly upstream to have a little bit of an angle. Paying attention to the tip of the line to manage the speed of your retrieve is very important. 33:40 - We dig into the fly patterns he uses. The size of the claws of the crayfish is very important to consider. He gives a shoutout to Scientific Angler for their amazing triple-density lines. He also mentions their Stillwater Hover. 55:03 - He mentions the tungsten beads which are good for when you can't see the fish. 56:30 - He usually sees bigger fish during the summertime when the water is clear.
