This week we are rebroadcasting our interview with Nuskmata (Jacinda Mack) originally aired in February of 2020. From roller coaster rides at Disney World to museums dotting the Pacific Northwest, symbols of mining and the Gold Rush remain deeply enshrined in the collective imagination of the mythic West. Hidden beneath this cultural veneer, the material realities of today's superscale mining are often out of sight, out of mind. In this week's In The Field episode, we trace the historical contours and material legacy of the mining industry across so-called British Columbia, unearthing stories from a region that bears an estimated 1,100 abandoned mines, 150-year-old mining laws, and more mining exploration companies than anywhere else on Earth. Guided by the raw testimony of mother, water protector, and organizer Nuskmata (Jacinda Mack), this episode braids together the history of the Gold Rush and colonization in B.C., the state of salmon, the practice of free, prior, and informed consent, dirty mining for a “clean” energy revolution, and the urgent necessity of reform. Music by Cary Morin, Compassion Gorilla, Lynx and the Servants of Song, The Mynabirds, The Melawmen Collective, and The Honey Tongues. CARY MORIN has been described as "one of the best acoustic pickers on the scene today.” With deft fingerstyle guitar and vocals that alternately convey melodic elation and gritty world-weariness, Morin crafts an inimitable style often characterized as roots-infused Native Americana with hints of bluegrass, folk, blues, and rock. He has performed at renowned venues across the globe, including the Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center, and is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades. LILLI LEWIS is a classically trained, award-winning singer/songwriter from New Orleans. Lewis is said to have "Sister Rosetta Tharpe's virtuoso commitment to her instrument and Odetta's vocal power, creating a show that is a force of nature.” Opening for Alana Davis, Dr. John, Kirk Joseph, Kermit Ruffins, Henry Butler and Jon Cleary to name a few, the social justice themes and human rights messages that filter into her lyrics, as well as her gospel-tinged vocals and instrumentation are a direct result from her upbringing spent listening to her father's sermons and southern choirs while learning the northern sensibilities of her civil rights activist mother. Well, it has certainly been a while since our last episode dropped, but Ken is back with a very special discussion with Cary Morin. The last concert I saw out in the world before this pandemic closed venues was Cary Morin at North Star Church of the Arts. I had a prior commitment, so I was running a bit late and I slid into the back pew. Cary was playing an entrancing instrumental melody, with a wide-brimmed hat pulled down low, shadows over his face. It was what music is supposed to do: after a harried day, I was taken out of my world, and given the gift of sounds and silence, of rhythm and solace, and I could take a good, deep breath. It was so enjoyable to get to talk with Cary about his latest record, Dockside Saints. The record is amazing: some of the best musicians in Louisiana back Cary, and they explore all the heights and subtleties of blues, cajun, folk, and country music, while making a sound all their own. In the conversation, it is amazing to hear Cary talk about some of the origins of these songs, like “Valley of the Chiefs,” which comes from a story Cary’s great-grandmother told him. It is also great to get insight from him on some of the ways he thinks about using streaming services to attract new listeners, and his thoughts on bringing songs to other musicians and making space for their contributions. Hope you enjoy the episode!
