This week, ‘tis the season for traditions and gathering around songs and stories. Indigenous people love a good story! Especially during the long cold nights of winter. For Anishinabeg and Gwich'in Knowledge Keeper Jack Hoggarth, sharing traditional stories like those of the Anishinaabe spirit Waynaboozhoo is a connection to our ancestors. Community, friends and families would come together to tell these tales, passing them down through generations and creating winter-time traditions that continue to this day. Cree Métis musician Don Amero has been growing with his Christmas concert Amero Little Christmas for 15 years. Local holiday shows have become traditions in communities across Turtle Island. In Winnipeg, that means an evening with Don Amero, his band and his glitter ball suit jacket. Inuk classical singer, Deantha Edmunds enchants with a holiday concert of her own that honours a 200-year-old tradition of singing carols in Inuttitut. Songs and Stories of Christmas in Labrador took place on a wintery December night in St. John's, Newfoundland. Deantha invited her 13 year old daughter Annabelle to sing along with her.

Singing has been Raquel Cole's first love for as long as she can remember. She got her first guitar at the age of nine and started to write songs not long after that. She was inspired by hit songs she heard on the radio from artists like Shania Twain and Bryan Adams, but also from jamming with her dad, a drummer, in the basement learning how to play 70's rock and roll. After graduating high school, Raquel had planned to go on to study jazz guitar, but not being able to deny her desire to be in Nashville writing songs, she respectfully declined her acceptance to Capilano University in North Vancouver and instead made the move to Nashville. Her debut album "Personal Truth" was released in 2018. Raquel has also found success writing for other artists and claims her first Billboard Top 10 Country charting song recorded by superstar Marie Osmond. In 2020, Raquel became a semi- finalist for the Sirius XM ‘Top of the Country' nationwide contest in Canada, in partnership with the Canadian Country Music Association. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, she began working on a stripped-down passion project. Recording three songs that she co-wrote where she played all guitars on the project & recorded her distinct vocals, adding cello to the songs as well. The result, “The Essence of Me”, was released in August 2020, which has racked up nearly 250,000 streams globally. Raquel's most recent single “Think About You” continues to win her new fans. Currently, country radio & country fans are loving her song with Don Amero entitled "Let You" for which there is a music video. Raquel will be performing at the Cavendish Beach Music Festival which runs July 7th through July 9th in Cavendish, PEI. Full schedule & tickets at cavendishbeachmusic.com.

On this episode of Face to Face: Life could have turned out a lot different for Don Amero. The award winning musician’s parents split up when he was around 11 years old in what he says was a “really bad divorce.” Growing up, there was always music in the house. Both of Amero’s parents played and sang. Life in the north end of Winnipeg was also rough where Amero says there was a high rate of poverty and a lot of broken homes. For Amero, music quickly became his vice.

This week’s episode is a light edition with three stories. Our first story is an interview with Winnipeg-born Juno-nominated musician Don Amero, who is currently on his “Amero Little Christmas” tour which ends in Winnipeg. We also cover the exhibition titled “Forest Encounters” that is currently on display at the School of Art Gallery. Finally, we spoke quickly with fifth-year player on Bisons men’s volleyball team Dustin Spiring to talk about his career. We cap off the show with “Cheers” featuring Q‑Tip off of Anderson .Paak’s latest album, “Oxnard”.
Mike sits down for an in-depth chat with Louis O'Reilly, the VP of country music powerhouse Invictus Entertainment and the manager for Brett Kissel and other country stars. They discuss the ins and outs of artist management and building an artist's career in the modern music industry, what informs Louis' decision to sign an artist, the transition into the streaming era, and what he sees as the four key ingredients for a successful career. As well, we have a bonus conversation with fast-rising country/roots/pop artist Don Amero, who discusses the creation of his latest album, Evolution, and the pressure of following-up the Juno-nominated album Refined that brought his career to another level. Don and Mike also discuss why Indigenous artists are, in recent years, receiving a higher level of critical acclaim and commercial success even though the deep well of artistic talent always existed in the community.
