Nahko is a singer/songwriter — a musician — who truly journeys between genres and manages to reinvent his style with each successive expression. He sits down with Michael and returning guest, Adam St. Simons in the middle of their North American tour to discuss the creative process, his humble beginnings of farm work, and how great trials are often opportunities to make great music. Nahko can be found here and his tour dates here.
Love is forever calling me, To let go of my self-centered ways, And not let my fear of losing my truth, Make me go when I could have stayed. ☉ It's time to clean up our act, put the final touches on our makeup, and get ready to get out there as the show's about to begin! As I said in the video today, the equinox is an "evolutionary gate." It's a turning point. That means it's time to make choices. Choices about what and who comes with you and what and who gets left behind. This is also reflected in several other aspects occurring at this time. The Sun's inconjunct Saturn in Pisces indicates that this is a time to break free from past structures that once provided security. In addition, let's not forget that the Sun is just finishing an opposition to Neptune. That aspect brought up our illusions to help us see them and let go of pipedreams so we can create a reality more true to ourselves. The Sun/Neptune/Saturn aspects are also emphasized again in this week's Sabian Symbol, which ends with the "CONQUEST OF ILLUSION." These last few weeks of the Sun/Mercury in Virgo have shown us what is real and what needs adjustment/cleaning up/cleaning out so we're not carrying too much baggage into a new future. Take a few days of "total concentration," get to the heart of the matter, and start anew next week! A great place to do that would be with the dolphins in the Bahamas or with a good Pluto workshop in Daytona Beach! There are a couple of spots left, so jump on it! https://bit.ly/kaypacha-events I've settled on Nahko's FUNCTIONAL for this week's song. Check it out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BVGgObnC8E So Much Love, Kaypacha https://newparadigmastrology.com/

Beginning his musical journey at 6 years old, Nahko began traveling widely in his teens, wrestling with identity, purpose, and perception. Busking on streets, selling CDs out of his guitar case, he earned a cult following. Backed by his band, Medicine For The People, Nahko's 2013 commercial breakout album Dark As Night landed in the Billboard Heatseekers Chart top 10. Medicine For The People played major festivals including Outside Lands, Electric Forest, Wanderlust, and Bumbershoot, and sold-out Colorado's 10,000-capacity Red Rocks Amphitheater as headliners. https://www.nahko.com/ https://www.instagram.com/nahkobear/ https://open.spotify.com/artist/7gkeG... Todays Quicky is an excerpt from Season 2, Episode 3; #18 Transformations and Self-Discovery (with Franko Heke) Today on the podcast I chat with a beautiful man who I met in New Zealand a few years ago. We shared a meal together and I resonates with so much of his story. His name is Franko Heke and he is on a mission to raise consciousness through his music and workshops. Drawing on ancient mantra in combination with his own cultural roots, Franko's devotional sessions are bound to coax your own divine voice into the open with his distinct fresh sounds for today. With years of touring rock music under his belt, Franko's compass has drawn him north toward a movement, which brings people together, celebrating our unique gifts, our connection to one another and to mother earth. Sought after for yoga, meditation and transformational festival events, Franko's boundless energy for the betterment of all beings. Having opened for Xavier Rudd and Nahko & Medicine for the people as well as sharing the microphone with Donavon Frankenreiter, Franko is poised to have his message heard far and wide. We spoke about personal transformation and choosing a different path by return to the self and not being scared to make mistakes. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/cam-fraser/message

Inner silence is the key, To knowing all I am. It stills my mind and allows my soul, To take the reins of my will in its hands. The “trapeze artist” is another way of feeling into this death/resurrection process going on with Mercury now for the next two weeks and then Venus/Mars. We have swung as far as our current trapeze (identity) can take us. We need to let go of that trapeze, and when we do, we are “in the void,” nothing to hold onto, flying solo through space. It is a long way down to the safety net, and we must be awake, present, strong, and ready to take hold of the empty, flying trapeze ahead of us. We need to surrender to the unknown, release the known and enter into a state of true faith, hope, and trust in the mysterious, in the “force of life,” in Spirit. A bit like cliff diving and some other sports where confidence in your body, your Self, and in Life gives you the courage to let go. In this space, this limbo, we allow our soul/spirit to carry us forward toward our destiny here on earth. We don't know where we're going or what's going to happen. It can be frightening. Yet this is precisely where and when the magical, spiritual beings catalyze our process of metamorphosis that transforms us from the old, earthbound caterpillar to the colorful butterfly. Fear, lack of faith, hope, and knowing can lead us to resist this process. This is to our own and the world's detriment. Fighting the evolutionary process is a causal factor of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual pain. Let's not be dragged into the new paradigm, bruised, victimized, and powerless. Instead, let us open our Heartmind to the reality of Spirit and its working in the material world, especially through us as human beings! This week's song is by Nahko, Love letters to God: https://youtu.be/E-QGkYNc0Ls

Guest Bio:“Montana isn't just where I live,” says Satsang's Drew McManus. “It's my heart, my soul. Along with my family, it's my everything.”It's little wonder, then, that the state played such a pivotal role in inspiring ‘All Right Now,' Satsang's extraordinary new album and debut release for venerated indie label Side One Dummy. Written and recorded during an extended hiatus from the road, the record finds McManus reconnecting with his western roots and exploring a whole new palette of sounds and textures, drawing on classic country and modern Americana to forge a joyful, rustic collection all about letting go and living in the moment. McManus produced the album himself, and while the songs here are certainly honest and deeply personal, they're written in a spiritual language that taps into something far more universal, something inherent in the human condition that binds us as brothers and sisters on a shared journey to find ourselves and our place in this world. The performances and arrangements are broad and spacious to match, reflecting the wide-open fields and soaring mountains that surrounded the band during the whirlwind recording process, and the result is a lush, organic collection fueled by acoustic guitars, fiddle, and pedal steel, a warm, inviting record that hints at everything from Uncle Tupelo and The Jayhawks to Gregory Alan Isakov and The Head and the Heart as it meditates on the power—and the pull—of home.“I've been on the road for the last five or six years straight,” says McManus, “so being back in Montana for a whole year was a big change. Having that kind of uninterrupted time at home helped me fall back in love with songwriting in a whole new way.”Though McManus was born in Montana, he actually spent much of his formative years in Des Moines, IA. His childhood was troubled, to say the least, marked by physical abuse at home and a nose for trouble that surrounded him. Music offered an escape, though, and McManus found solace in the punk rock and hip-hop he discovered through his love of skateboarding. Brash and aggressive, the songs were a far cry from the country tunes his mother played on endless loop around the house.“She loved the old stuff like Buck Rogers and Hank Williams,” McManus recalls, “but she was really into that mid-to-late-nineties sound, guys like Garth Brooks and Randy Travis and Travis Tritt. I didn't get it at the time, but she always used to tell me, ‘Someday, when you're older, you'll come back to this music.'”Desperate to escape his surroundings and convinced that he'd wind up in jail like his brother if he stayed, McManus left home as a teenager and moved in with his older sister in Chicago. His first few years there played out like one long party, but as time wore on, it became apparent that the party was spiraling out of control. “It was clear to everyone else around me that I was an alcoholic and a drug addict,” McManus explains. “Eventually, my friends just sat me down and said, ‘We think you're going to die if you keep this up.'”So McManus packed his bags and headed back to Montana, where his biological father worked at a rehab clinic. The road to recovery was a long and arduous one, but McManus eventually got clean and sober, fell in love, and married the woman of his dreams. For the first time in a long time, life was good, and yet it still felt like something was missing, like some fundamental building block of his personality was being neglected. It wasn't until McManus found himself on a backpacking trek in the Himalayas that the final piece of the puzzle fell into place. “I realized on that trip that you only get one shot at life,” says McManus, “and if you've got a chance to utilize your talents and follow your dreams, then you've got to go for it. It gave me this renewed sense of purpose, and within a week of getting back home, I started playing shows and launched the band.”McManus filled notebook after notebook on that Himalayan journey, and the material would eventually go on to form the basis of Satsang's breakout 2016 debut, ‘The Story of You.' Steeped in reggae, hip-hop, and world music, the album was an uplifting affirmation that connected with fans around the world, racking up roughly 15 millions streams on Spotify alone. McManus and his bandmates returned a year later with their similarly successful sophomore effort, ‘Pyramid(s),' which hit #1 on the Billboard Reggae Chart and #2 on iTunes, and pushed their sound even further with 2019's ‘Kulture,' which incorporated a wider swath of influences from Motown to Tom Petty. Relentless road warriors, the group built a devoted following one night at a time, sharing stages with the likes of Michael Franti & Spearhead and Nahko and Medicine for the People as they worked their way up from bars and clubs to massive festivals.

In this edition of The Way Out co-host extraordinaire Jason has a certified must listen interview with person in longtime recovery and co-founder of the Recovery group Sober Squad, Colin Cash. Colin was born on a reservation in northern Minnesota but was raised as a ward of the state, bouncing between foster homes and group homes. With no roots and no loving home, he shares about where his problems took him and how he ultimately found a way out. No doubt one of the over-arching themes of Colin's recovery story is the false beliefs that kept him stuck and in his addiction, and the positive beliefs, like in that of his Higher Power, that helped him achieve a meaningful and lasting recovery and a very special belief that led him to start a movement which would help those within and outside of his community! Colin's come from thinking he was a zero to a being a true recovery hero and he's just getting started so listen up. Nahko is a singer, songwriter, and musician who blends socially conscious folk and rock with soulful, alt-R&B, genre-bending production. In a career built on reflective, deeply personal songwriting, Nahko's new album, ‘Take Your Power Back,' grapples with grief, trauma, reconciliation, and learning to face heartache head-on by embracing the peace and serenity that comes with understanding and acceptance. It's an album of growth, courage, and resilience, a testament to the beauty and evolution that can come from fully inhabiting our pain. It's also proof that our true power —spiritual, physical, and emotional — inevitably comes from within. Born to a Puerto Rican/Native American mother and a Filipino father, Nahko was adopted by a white, conservative, Christian family in Oregon and raised under the name David Bell. He later learned that his birth was the result of a rape, that his biological mother had been fourteen and sold into sex work at the time he was conceived, and that his biological father was murdered. A sixth-generation Apache, he took on the moniker of Nahko — a play on his middle name, Nahkohe-ese, which translates to Little Bear — as a way of reclaiming his roots, and in his late teens and twenties began traveling the country, spending time in Hawaii and Alaska as he wrestled with identity, purpose, and perception. Backed by his band, Medicine For The People, Nahko released his debut album, ‘On The Verge,' in 2011, but his breakthrough came two years later with ‘Dark As Night', a critical and commercial breakout landing in the Top Ten on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart and earning festival slots at Outside Lands, Electric Forest, Wanderlust, Bumbershoot, and more. Over the next four years, he would release two more albums with his band, solidifying his reputation as an outspoken activist and advocate for social and environmental justice. A few of my favorite songs of his are this one, and this one, and this one, and this one. Also, here is the song, San Quentin, inspired by the visit to the jail that he referenced near the end of the conversation.
