In 2004, just three months after her wedding, 31-year-old corporate giant Caryn Sullivan was diagnosed with breast cancer. Caryn's treatment of choice was aggressive therapy; she had a bilateral mastectomy followed by chemotherapy. Physically and emotionally, she was a mess, she recalls, until she got the green light. She was cancer-free. She jumped back on the corporate bandwagon believing she was one and done, and nine years later, the cancer returned. Caryn was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. The young, corporate mother was determined to beat the odds. “It was devastating, but you don't have to be devastated,” she reflects. Instead of trying to survive, she was going to thrive. She changed her eating habits overnight, started taking hot yoga classes, walked away from her corporate job and started her own business dedicated to inspiring others to improve their health and happiness. She even wrote a book – Happiness through Hardship, a practical guide full of ideas for cancer patients to help them navigate their unexpected journey. To hear Caryn's inspirational story, listen to The Breast of Everything podcast, hosted by Comprehensive Breast Care Surgeons Linsey Gold, DO, FACS, FACOS; and Ashley Richardson, DO, FACOS.

I am so happy you’ve joined me for this podcast episode. I’m chatting with a remarkably inspiring guest, one whom I think you’ll love learning about and learning from. Caryn Sullivan is a two-time breast cancer survivor who spent nearly 20-years working in the world of sports and entertainment. It wasn’t until her wake-up call with stage IV cancer however, that her focus shifted from looking good to being well.   In an effort to help others embrace a lifestyle of well-being, Caryn founded Pretty Wellness where she chronicles her journey toward better health and happiness. Caryn is also the author of Happiness through Hardship and has podcast Happiness through Hardship - The Podcast where she and her guests share inspirational stories of hope.   During our chat, Caryn shared so many wonderful words of wisdom, but here are some which I found to be especially impactful: No matter your circumstances, remember that small steps can lead to significant changes in your life.  When looking for a support system, find what feels right for you and what you need. There is always a way to find some joy no matter your journey. Remember to be flexible with yourself; what you need today might be different from what you need tomorrow. Healthy living means having healthy practices that are consistently part of your life.   Want to connect with Caryn? You can do so via her book Happiness Through Hardship: A Guide and Journal for Cancer Patients, Their Caregivers and Friends During an Initial Diagnosis (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1982227567/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1982227567&linkCode=as2&tag=prettwelln-20&linkId=dbdb3f9e82ae9346591ebefedf08d2b6), the Happiness through Hardship podcast (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/happiness-through-hardship/id1501057346), Pretty Wellness (https://prettywellness.com/), her website (http://www.carynsullivan.com/), Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/prettywellness/), Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/prettywellness), and Twitter (https://twitter.com/prettywellness).

Caryn was a newlywed when she first discovered that she had stage 2 breast cancer. After treatment, which included a double mastectomy and chemotherapy, she was able to have a baby that she and her husband always wanted. Then nine years after she completed treatment, she discovered that her cancer had metastasized. For the past seven years, she is thriving. She created an entire wellness program, Pretty Wellness. She wrote a book and has her own podcast, Happiness Through Hardship. Needless to say, Caryn is living her best life. You can follow Caryn Sullivan, a two-time cancer survivor, founder of Pretty Wellness, on facebook, instagram and twitter at PrettyWellness or even better, go to her website at PrettyWellness.com. When we started the podcast production, taping many episodes, it was before COVID-19 became a global pandemic. Within weeks, even days, the world changed immensely and I wanted to connect with someone who understood the hardship dealing with the virus. Even now as many people are phasing back into socialization, this virus is still a threat and top of mind especially for those touched by a compromised immunity...like myself and today’s guest, Rachel Rosenthal, founder of the professional organizing agency, Rachel and Company. Rachel is an authority focused on home and office organization that’s simple and practical. She left a powerful desk job to follow her passion and now 2500 clients later, has made it into a booming business. In addition to being a successful entrepreneur recognized worldwide, she’s also a mom of identical tween daughters and living a life with Hashimoto’s disease. Rachel spoke with me just weeks into her recovery from COVID-19. She shares with us how she got through, demonstrates some exercises for COVID chest congestion that she learned from CNN’s Chris Cuomo and how her passion for organizing helped her find a little peace during her journey. We also laugh about meal planning, lipstick and touch upon a few tips along the way. Please enjoy and take a minute to rate, review and subscribe. My guest today is not just a one, but a TWO time breast cancer survivor, which is not once inspiring but DOUBLY INSPIRING. (I really couldn’t come up with something more creative there.) Caryn Sullivan spent nearly 20-years working in the world of sports and entertainment largely at Disney & ESPN and the Minnesota Timberwolves, crushing her job in that intense environment by fueling herself with good ol’ Diet Dr. Peppers and endless bags of baked quote unquote “HEALTHY” chips. It wasn’t until her wake-up call with stage IV cancer  that Caryn changed her focus from looking good to being well. She launched her blog Pretty Wellness to chronicle her journey toward wellness by sharing stories and lessons learned through her own hardship and has since been a champion in motivating peeps to thrive in their lives. Caryn’s been seen on The Doctor Oz Show, Hallmark Channel’s Home & Family and inspires thousands to embrace wellness in the motivational speeches she gives throughout the country and in her motivational interview she gave me right here, right meow!   Press Play to Hear:   How it took two cancer diagnoses for Caryn to have an ah-ha moment How the magical unicorn Kris Carr majorly inspired Caryn to take action How to merge natural and traditional treatments safely Some tips for staying positive when facing adversity Why you need to have a cut-off time for your pity party How you can support a loved one through a new diagnosis Thoughtful gifts you can send someone healing -- instead of a casserole How to keep up with healthy habits when you're not feeling so healthy How to build a wellness team and why you should even if you're not sick How often you should be doing a breast self-exam The first thing you should do after a frightening diagnosis AND SO MUCH MORE!   Links related to this episode: The full show notes with all the deets from this episode! Pretty Wellness chronicles tips and tales on making the journey toward optimal health easy for her and her family. She traded in diet sodas, toxic make-up, and a chaotic routine for green juices, clean products, and a more-Zen lifestyle. In this segment, she shares some of her top ideas for healthy summer snacks. Hydration is important, but avoid sugar-laden sports drinks. Instead, create your own fun drink with infused water (strawberries, lemons, limes, cucumber, watermelon).  Fresh fruits are easily portable (bananas, apples, avocados), and veggies with side dips like hummus or guacamole can be filling and hearty.  It's not realistic to get rid of ALL the packaged foods, especially if you're running around with your kids. Aim for nutrition bars with minimal ingredients, seasoned popcorn, and chips prepared in avocado oil (or another healthy oil).
