Plant-Based Dietary Patterns Linked to Slower Epigenetic Aging

BUFFALO, NY — March 31, 2026 — A new #research paper was #published in Volume 18 of Aging-US on March 20, 2026, titled “Plant-based dietary patterns are associated with slower epigenetic aging.” Led by first and corresponding author Hyunju Kim from the Department of Epidemiology and the Cardiovascular Health Research Unit, Department of Medicine, University of Washington, the study examined whether four plant-based diet indices — overall PDI, provegetarian diet, healthy PDI, and unhealthy PDI — were associated with DNA methylation-based measures of epigenetic aging. The authors analyzed data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study (n = 2,810) and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, n = 2,056), and assessed associations with GrimAge2, HannumAge, and PhenoAge. The researchers found that each standard deviation higher in the overall PDI, provegetarian diet, and healthy PDI was associated with decelerated GrimAge2, while higher overall PDI and provegetarian diet were also associated with decelerated PhenoAge and HannumAge. By contrast, unhealthy PDI was not significantly associated with epigenetic aging. The findings suggest that plant-rich dietary patterns, especially those emphasizing healthier plant foods, may be linked to slower biological aging in largely non-vegetarian populations. “No significant association was observed for unhealthy PDI and any of the DNA methylation-based aging.” The authors note that these are observational data and do not establish causality. They call for longitudinal and interventional studies to determine whether sustained adherence to healthy plant-based dietary patterns can directly influence epigenetic aging and related health outcomes over time. What if repairs didn't stall your schedule or drain your cash while invoices pile up? We sit down with Starwind Equipment Services' president, Randi Glaszer, to unpack a smarter way to protect heavy equipment—one that matches the way contractors actually buy, finance, and fix their machines. We break down how multi‑year physical damage insurance on admitted paper can be written to the life of a lease or loan, with rates locked, loss payees satisfied, and premiums often rolled into financing. Randi explains why Starwind pays 100% actual cash value up front instead of staging replacement cost, and how broad PDI protection follows the machine through real‑world risks like transit damage, overturn, flood, theft, and job site incidents. The real unlock is claims. Starwind assigns one adjuster to coordinate both PDI and ESC from day one, opening files together, paying verified labor during parts delays, and ensuring towing, cranes, and protection costs don't slip through notice windows. We also talk eligibility, state availability, equipment age and exclusions, and why this model was built to advocate for small and mid‑sized contractors who can't afford friction when iron is idle. If you want fewer surprises, faster releases from the dealer, and protection that keeps projects moving, this conversation is for you. Is a vegan diet always healthy? It appears that even with ultra-processed plant-based foods there are substantial health benefits.   The results of an analysis comparing a vegan diet containing "junk food" indulgences and a standard diet containing meat and dairy are examined by Hana Kahleova, MD, PhD, who co-authored the study.   After analyzing the results of nearly 250 study participants, she joins “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room Podcast with the surprising findings.   About The Study The analysis assessed the association of a plant-based diet index (PDI), healthful plant-based diet index (hPDI), and unhealthful plant-based diet index (uPDI) with weight loss. The PDI measures adherence to a plant-based diet in general, the hPDI includes more fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans, and the uPDI includes more foods such as refined grains and fruit juices.   The findings are from a secondary analysis of a Physicians Committee study in which 244 overweight adults were randomly assigned to a vegan group that followed a low-fat vegan diet or a control group that made no diet changes for 16 weeks. Calorie intake was not limited for either group, and neither group was given diet quality instructions. — — STUDIES — — Vegan Diet Quality Study https://go.nature.com/48H1NkV   — — EVENTS — — What: The Power Foods Revolution Where: Washington, DC - The National Press Club Date: March 26, 2024 Time: 7:00pm Who: Dr. Neal Barnard, Chuck Carroll, Dustin Harder, Stefanie Ignoffo Tickets: https://bit.ly/PowerFoodsTixDC   — — BECOME AN EXAM ROOM VIP — — - Exclusive early access to select interviews - Pre-sale opportunities for live event tickets - Exclusive live online events   VIP sign up: https://www.pcrm.org/examroomvip   — — FOLLOW US — — The Exam Room Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theexamroompodcast — — — Chuck Carroll Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ChuckCarrollWLC X: https://www.twitter.com/ChuckCarrollWLC Facebook: http://wghtloss.cc/ChuckFacebook — — — Physicians Committee Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/physicianscommittee Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PCRM.org X: https://www.twitter.com/pcrm — — — 5-Star Success: Share Your Story Apple: https://apple.co/2JXBkpy Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2pMLoY3 — — — Share the Show Please subscribe and give the show a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or many other podcast providers.
