Welcome back to Collecting Issues, the comic book book club where this month we're pulling a rabbit out of a hat and diving into Zatanna: Bring Down the House! Join us as we review issues #1-5 of the 2025 DC Black Label series by the incredible team of Mariko Tamaki, Javier Rodriguez, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou.Is this spooky, Halloween-adjacent tale a true horror comic or more "spider decoration spooky"? We break down this visually stunning "Year One" style origin story for DC's premier magician. From its unique narrative approach to its mastery of the female gaze, we explore how this comic redefines Zatanna for a new generation. Plus, we have to talk about that impossibly clean, muscular, and croissant-eating John Constantine.Tune in for a breezy, fun, and pop-art-infused discussion that's part comic review, part art appreciation, and part therapy session for our hosts' confused sexualities. In This Episode, We Discuss:The Art of Magic: A deep dive into Javier Rodriguez's spectacular, psychedelic, and masterful visuals. We explore his innovative panel layouts, mastery of colour (including that CMYK flashback style!), and pin-up aesthetic.A Millennial Magician: How Mariko Tamaki's writing transforms Zatanna into a relatable millennial hero grappling with imposter syndrome, parental legacy, and finding her own power.Narrative Tropes & Themes: We tackle the "Chosen One" narrative, the mystery of Zatara's dark past, and whether the story holds up to the incredible artwork. For the Female Gaze?: An exploration of how the comic flips the script on Zatanna's traditionally fetishised character design, creating a powerful and sexy story from a distinctly female perspective. That Constantine Cameo: Was John Constantine's appearance necessary, or did he just show up to ruin a perfectly good lesbian romance? We have thoughts.Follow the Podcast:Join the Discord and read alongRead Our SubstackFollow us on InstagramFollow us on TiktokWatch us on YoutubeNext Comic:Get ready for Spooktober! Dan & Manny are joined by friend of the show, artist & pop culture enthusiast Andrew Breen to put the 1989 fantasy comedy horror film Little Monsters to the ultimate test—THE NOSTALGIA TEST! “Little Monsters is one of the most repellent, distasteful, truly creepy movies I've seen in a long time, a movie so unpleasant I can't really figure out why anybody wanted to make it, and I don't know why anybody would wanna see it.” -Roger Ebert It's officially Spooky Season and what better way to celebrate than to put one of the weirdest and creepiest movies ever made to the ultimate test. Little Monsters makes the plot of every David Lynch film look totally normal. This movie was suggested by the guest, Andrew Breen, who's an amazing artist and a pop culture nerd like Dan & Manny. Little Monsters looks like a club Bill Hader's SNL character Stefon would be partying at until everyone turns into a pile of clothes. This movie has everything, Fred Savage, Daniel Stern on the verge of murdering his whole family, the woman who owned The Cleveland Indians in Major League, and a monster named Snick, who's a cigarette cross from between the girl who turned into a blueberry before she died in Willy Wonka and a broke down Meatloaf. Not to mention a PCP riddled Howie Mandal as Maurice the monster, who is an eleven-year-old/200-year-old blue lunatic getting children grounded, yelled at, and probably hit (hey, it's the 80s). So set your monster catching traps, make your peanut butter and onion sandwiches, make sure to check the apple juice before you drink it, and come hangout as we see if Little Monsters passes The Nostalgia Test. Definitive Ranking returns! This time around, we're examining the single-player campaign of Metroid Prime Hunters. We cover the good, the bad, and the ugly, as we cover the cool character designs, awesome weapons, lacklustre boss battles, OST, and the make-or-break point of the game: those darn stylus controls! Come play along, and as always, here's the criteria for the Definitive Rankings: World / Atmosphere (the vibe, the setting, the mood) Art Style (design of Samus, the enemies, the graphics in general) Story (what works, what doesn't) Pacing / Progression (are there any parts that really bog the player down, or is it still fun getting lost?) Gameplay / “Gimmick” (what new or different gameplay aspects we like) Items / Abilities (how are the powerups and are they cool and practical) Areas (how does each individual area look, feel, play, etc.) Enemies / Bosses (are they fun, creative, etc.) Expansions / Powerups (are the expansions hidden throughout the world fun, creative, and enjoyable to collect?) Music (are we humming along?) Of course, all of these are subjective, and we're putting our critics hats on, but we want to hear what you have to say on Bluesky! Visit OmegaMetroid.com! Subscribe! Check out my Free Brainstorming Workshop: https://mightyartisan.com/worldbuilding Learn to silence your inner critic. Ignite creative ideas. And watch a live demo of these techniques in action.---This is The Fifty First Episode of the Visual Scholar Podcast - With Tim Mcburnie. What if style isn't something you choose, but something that emerges from three specific elements working in the right sequence?Below is in Automagically generated summary so you can check out the content and also to help with search functionality!---This episode breaks down the three fundamental elements that determine every artist's style and explores why most artists approach style development in the wrong sequence. Rather than treating style as something you pick from a menu, the discussion examines how style emerges from the intersection of aesthetic DNA, process choices, and functional constraints. The episode explores how visual aesthetics come from early influences and mental landscapes that artists uncover rather than choose, drawing examples from childhood inspirations and the concept of investigating the influences of your influences. It examines how process - from tools and techniques to thinking patterns - directly shapes the surface appearance of work, using examples from comic book penciling techniques to concept art workflows. The final element addresses how functionality and production constraints actually drive many stylistic choices, from publishing schedules affecting comic book aesthetics to career requirements shaping artistic approaches.—CHAPTERS:00:00 Intro01:10 Welcome02:26 Artists Think Style Is a Choice…07:05 Aesthetic - Your Visual DNA18:57 Process - How You Actually Make Art26:35 Functionality - Purpose Drives Style41:20 The Analytical Takeaway43:59 The Simple Takeaway44:12 The Practical Takeaway48:16 The Philosophical Takeaway53:15 Outro—---The Visual Scholar Podcast is designed to help you demystify the world of Art, Productivity, and Creativity.
