As a wife, mother, friend, coach and business woman, I have experienced the highest joys of happiness and the lowest pains of loss. My purpose and passion is to use the experiences of my journey to help others embrace their own. All people start from the same place of being whole when we are born. Most of our lives we strive to find our way back to feeling whole. Life is about this journey: the journey of removing the blocks preventing us from having peace, love and success. Whatever your priorities are – family, relationships, spirituality, professional or financial – I am invested in helping you achieve personal satisfaction and balance. My Education Growing up in Los Angeles, my life has been strengthened by the diversity of the connections I've made. My parents are life-long political activists and their commitment to equality and justice for all exposed me to diverse cultures, religions, languages and socioeconomic backgrounds. Understanding this, I carried this thread throughout my educational journey by studying inter-group conflict and the social costs of prejudice in undergrad at UCLA where I received a B.A. in Sociology and World Arts and Cultures.

On this episode I talk to two of my favorite people, Joe and Celia Ward-Wallace about how their business, South LA Cafe, has come to be a main staple in the community. We talk about how they got started, their passion for change and equality, why love is the language we all speak, and so much more. In honor of Mother’s Day, I’m releasing episodes each week in the month of May that I will think will help us pause from the busyness and prioritize and invest in ourselves. I found a powerful guide for this purpose in Elena Lipson, someone I met through another mentor and coach of mine, Lindsay Pera, who beautifully dedicated this episode. As a retreat leader, speaker, writer, coach and podcaster, Elena inspires women to redefine the hustle in exchange for creating a life they love with what she calls the Feminine Metrics of success: Pleasure, Play, Ease, Grace and Trusting Your Own Pace. In this conversation, we explore Elena’s journey from a life that began in Russia to one based today in the fresh air of the Pacific Northwest with her husband of over 19 years and their teenage son Miles. The best adjective I could think of to describe this conversation is “juicy” filled with so much goodness, insights, and examples for how to connect to our bodies, speak our desires, and lean into presence and inquiry instead of assumption... with ourselves, our children and our partners. In fact, toward the end of the conversation, we begin to explore how we can keep the “pilot light” burning in our romantic relationships, so if you’re listening with children around, you may want to put in some earbuds. I left this conversation recommitted to building presence in my life, with greater awareness of the importance of body, heart, gut, and brain alignment, and excited to explore Elena’s challenge to us to get in touch with what we really want and then to ask for it. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did and that it sparks a shift in you, as it did me, to claim our self-care and speak our desires. Much appreciation, P.S. As you'll hear in the episode, Elena agreed to share more on the topic of "Movement and Pleasure" through a presentation in the Mother's Quest Facebook Group. OOOOOhhhhhh my goodness this week's podcast episode is good... Meet Celia Ward-Wallace. She's an activist, a community building and organiser, a powerhouse entrepreneur, a gatherer of beautiful souls and a mama to two beautiful black girls growing up in South Central Los Angeles. Along with her husband, Celia is raising two upstanding citizens who are already making a difference in our world. In this week's conversation, Celia and I touch on racial discrimination, what it's like to be growing up black in today's America, activism and the role it played both in her upbringing and how it continues to impact her life now, spirituality, white privilege and how to educate ourselves about it, and so much more. I could spend ages writing about this conversation but honestly: LISTEN. Then SHARE. We need to be having these (sometimes uncomfortable) conversations. If you'd like to connect with Celia, get a list of her recommended reading or learn more about her work in the world, click here to get everything you need. When you're finished listening, be sure to head to the MamaFuel Virtual Village to join the conversation about this and other podcast episodes. It's a totally free group and we're waiting there to have you join us. And finally, if you'd like to join the MamaFuel Sisterhood, drop me a line at anne@mamafuel.me and let's talk.

I’m excited to share this second special episode this month of the Mother’s Quest Podcast, in honor of Father’s Day, with someone I’ve known and admired for over a decade through our connection at Alternatives in Action, California Assemblymember Rob Bonta. This month of June has been a time to focus on the amazing fathers in our lives. It’s also been primary election month in many communities. And when I thought about who I could interview who is both an amazing father and committed to a life of public service, Rob immediately came to mind. When we pressed record on this interview, Rob had just been elected for a fourth term to the California State Assembly’s 18th District, where he represents the cities of Oakland, Alameda, and San Leandro and became, in 2012, the first Filipino American legislator in the 165-year history of California. Prior to this, Rob utilized his law degree from Yale to serve as Deputy City Attorney for the City and County of San Francisco, and served as the Chair of the City of Alameda’s Economic Development Commission and as board president for the Social Service Human Relations before becoming Vice Mayor of the City of Alameda, the position he held as he ran for the State Assembly. We started our conversation reflecting on Rob’s childhood and how his father, who stood with Dr. Martin Luther King in the Civil Rights Movement, and his mother, a long-time leader in the Filipino social justice movement, taught him to understand injustice and the importance of joining the struggle to empower vulnerable communities. We reflect on some E.P.I.C. snapshot moments from Rob’s childhood. Growing up in a trailer just a few hundred yards from César Chávez’s home, Rob watched closely as his parents organized Filipino and Mexican American farm workers, infusing his formative years with first-hand experience of one of the greatest peaceful social, racial, and economic justice movements of all time. Then, we delve into how the E.P.I.C. guideposts show up in Rob’s life, how he makes space for each of his four children and allows them to step into leadership and activism on their own, his passionate and purposeful work and the causes he’s championing as an Assemblyman, from early childhood education to affordable housing, the deep connection to his community that fulfills and restores him, and the family relationships that are everything to him, especially the one with his wife Mialisa, who he met in college and has been married to for 21 years. We also had the opportunity to talk about AB-931 and SB-1421, two bills aimed at reducing instances of police brutality and increasing police accountability. Moving through some discomfort I felt in the moment, I asked and Rob agreed to work toward getting these bills passed, to talk with the founders of Mothers Against Police Brutality for policy insight, and to explore bringing a powerful play called (M)others to Sacramento to shine light on the real stories of families who’ve lost loved ones to police violence. At the end, Rob challenged me and all of us to hold him and other lawmakers accountable to the issues and causes that matter most to us. In a heart-wrenching week when our government has been separating children from their families at the border, Rob’s message and call to action to hold our leaders accountable resonates deeply. I left the conversation with renewed commitment to do so, modeling engagement, not apathy, for my children and saying “yes” to creating my own family’s legacy of activism and leadership. How Rob’s parents fled the Philippines for the security of the family before the Martial Law era of Ferdinand Marcos The way that Rob and his wife, Mialisa, make time for each child and share with their kids what they love and care The many causes Rob is championing in his role as Assemblymember. Rob’s position on the gravity of solving the problem of police violence in our country, an exploration of two new California bills aimed at reducing police violence, and the requests I made of Rob to go further in his commitment. How being in his home community restores and fulfills Rob and how his love of soccer, since the days that he served as captain of Yale’s Soccer team, continues to be a way that Rob invests in his own well-being. Rob and Mialisa’s love story, how they continue staying together, and the extended family that supports them Rob’s awareness that this interview provided an opportunity to “Get off of the dance floor and onto the balcony” to survey the big picture and reflect What Rob really thinks is the enemy of democracy and his challenge for all of us This Week’s Challenge: Rob believes that the enemy of strong communities and Democracy is apathy. He challenges us to step up and hold him and our other leaders accountable, even through discomfort, to the issues and things that we value and are passionate about. I later focused on civil rights law and women's legal rights in pursuit of my J.D. from the People's College of Law. After working to promote equal access to public recreation services, I attended the Community Counselor Program at the Southern California Counseling Center where I learned techniques to help people face their struggles as a result of poverty and abuse. Through this journey, I affirmed my purpose in life—to advocate for empowerment through self-exploration.— Celia Ward-Wallace

My purpose and passion is to use the experiences of my journey to help others embrace their own. All people start from the same place of being whole when we are born. Most of our lives we strive to find our way back to feeling whole. Life is about this journey: the journey of removing the blocks preventing us from having peace, love and success. Socializing, Conversation & Laughter One of the best ways to unwind is to think of who in your life you enjoy the most and spend some quality time with them having fun. When we spend time with our favorite people, it allows us to release stress and let go of anything weighing on our heads. Talk therapy and laughter therapy are two of the lowest cost and most effective ways to let go of the trouble we have bottled up. Now you can save money on your life insurance just for being healthy. Meditation Meditation is a simple and extremely effective way of quieting our minds and alleviating stress in the moment. Meditation can be the act of doing anything where your mind concentrates on one thing. It can be gardening, reading, cooking and of course sitting still and breathing. Taking as little of 5 minutes a day to sit still and breathe has been proven to lower stress and ease many health issues, such as high blood pressure, depression, and anxiety. 3. Positive Affirmations We all have so much mind chatter and negative self-talk going 24 hours a day! In order to de-clutter our minds it is SUPER helpful to become fully aware of the conversations we have with ourselves in our head. Once we become conscious of the negative self-talk, we can create positive self-talk to replace those thoughts. So, write down all the negative stories you tell yourself about your past, your failures, mistakes, worries and fears. Then take each statement and write a positive affirmation in opposition to that statement. When that negative statement comes back into your mind, recognize it and say the positive affirmation over in its place. You can also write all your affirmations down and print them out. Read them daily in the morning and at night this will reprogram your subconscious so that you don’t have the negative thoughts, instead the positive thoughts will begin to be your default setting. 4. Sleep Sleeping lets your mind rest and hit the reset button. Sleep is one of the best and easiest tools we have to de-clutter our mind. Usually when we wake up we feel lighter, refreshed and energized and often have a shift in perspective. Often sleeping is where we have some of greatest creative inspirations, waking up full of excitement about a new idea which came forth because of the space made in the mind by going to sleep. When you have a decision to make and your mind feels too full, before going to bed, ask yourself “what should I do about this situation?” and then go to bed. Many times, this will give you so much more clarity and you will know exactly what to do. 5. Staycation AWAY from Home Stay-cations are awesome because you don’t have to pay for travel, but get all the benefits of a vacation. Pick a day or two a month to go to a local hotel. It’s ME-TIME and so schedule it in advance. This is an easy getaway because there is no housework, bills and distractions. Taking the time to unwind is so helpful in releasing stress and mind-clutter. 6. 24 Hours with NO Electronics (DEVICE DETOX!!) In this crazy instant communication world this piece of advice may be one of the hardest to implement, but it is one of the most valuable! One of the reasons for our mind-clutter is that our sub-conscious mind is processing so many pieces of information every second. The more you get on the computer to do emails, use Facebook and watch TV the more info overload your mind experiences. Plan one day a month to Learn more about your ad choices. In this video I talk with Celia Ward-Wallace, (http://celiawardwallace.com) coach author and public speaker. This conversation spans a wide range of topics from Celia's personal story growing up in the social justice movement; her journey to find happiness; how white women can better address internalized racism and be a good ally to POC; and how the coaching industry often re-inforces racism and classism. CW: this video is a conversation between two white women around exploring privilege and examining internalized racism.

Check out the answers to these important questions I received following my interview with Celia Ward Wallace where we discussed Self-Worth: How To Stop Comparing Yourself To Others. Do you think it’s really possible to have and create anything I want in this world? Celia said that 95% of what’s going on is in our subconscious mind, any tips for how to tap into our subconscious? I get jealous thinking about my boyfriend’s ex! I’m typically a very confident person, but she is beautiful and successful and I can’t help but wonder if he feels like he’s missed out on “the best.” How can I put a halt to these feelings once and for all? What are some these top limiting beliefs so I can talk to my children about it (in hopes they will never lose their child-like sense of wonder and positivity)?
