When today's podcast guest, Dr. Jantz, mentioned that he wanted to do a podcast about the impact of toxic people on our health, I was all in! Spending time with toxic people can affect your health in the following ways: It can increase your sympathetic response, leading to higher heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate. Your body may produce more stress hormones, which can cause inflammation. It can also damage your confidence and affect your sense of identity. How do you move the toxic people out of your life, especially if they are family members? Dr. Jantz suggested having a friend or spouse nearby when dealing with difficult family members at events. If you get upset, use a pre-agreed safe word to signal for support in removing yourself from the situation. With some pre-planning, you can avoid getting caught up in their negativity. Episode Summary:  Have you felt the pang of loneliness? Do you find yourself longing for deeper connections, for meaningful friendship? People are designed to be in community with one another, yet so many of us suffer from loneliness and isolation. Feelings of disconnect are more common than you may have realized and can have devastating consequences. My colleague, Dr. Gregory Jantz, and I want to help you with that. In this episode, we talk about how building meaningful connections can combat the effects of loneliness.   Quotables from the episode: Pre-pandemic studies revealed that over 61% of the population admitted to feeling lonely. The majority of people can't name one close friend. Everything on social media is instant, and social media says we're more connected when in reality, the opposite is true. Those who are lonely tend to experience a foreshortened future with no hope. Loneliness is really disconnection and longing for relationships. Isolation and loneliness are serious problems with real and often devastating consequences. Humans are social creatures in need of connection with others. Lack of strong relationships increases premature death by 50%. When we need people the most, we tend to withdraw. Real connection means connecting with real people. It requires an investment of time, emotions, and trust. There is a high cost to loneliness including decreased immune system, physical ailments, decreased mood, increased anxiety, decreased self-esteem, and increased panic. A universal critical need is the need to feel understood. Hope comes with a plan.   Scripture References: Genesis 2:18 “It is not good for the man to be alone.” Proverbs 27:9 “The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense.” Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.”   Recommended Resources:  The Power of Connection: Maximize Your Health and happiness with Close Relationships by Gregory L. 18. Protect Your Peace to Prevent Disease (with Dr. Gregg Jantz)   Mental health, stress, and anxiety: we've all experienced these feelings.   I work to protect my peace.   What does that mean?   I'm careful about who is in my life, and I'm cautious about what I listen to because that goes directly to my mind.   Listen to today's podcast with Dr. Gregg Jantz to learn his easy tips to help you protect your peace. He was very clear with me that there are things we can do daily to have more peace and, thus, better health. Here are some of my favorite tips that I do daily to create more peace in my life (all of my tips received a big thumbs up from Dr. J!). I've worked hard to surround myself with encouraging and kind people. I've also canceled our television cable, which allows me to choose how and when I hear the news.   I had to recognize what I could control to guard my peace.   What I can control today: What I'm hearing. What I'm eating and drinking. How did I respond to negative situations or people? My attitude. That. Is. It.   Once I realized that I could control these things and only these things (newsflash, I had to learn I couldn't control people), my stress levels started to change, and I found my joy returning.   Here's the daily ritual I do to protect my peace: I start my day with a glass of water while I look out my window and not at my PHONE. I make a cup of coffee and walk outside, rain or shine, and look toward the sun, not at the sun as that can damage your eyes. I return inside and read my Bible and write in my gratitude journal. I take five deep breaths and do a little bit of stretching at the top of every hour.   Dr. Jantz is the founder of The Center A Place of HOPE in Edmonds, Washington, voted a Top Ten facility for Depression Treatment in the United States. A narcissist will exaggerate achievements, and expect to be recognized as superior without accomplishments to support it. They have a heightened sense of self-importance, and are pre-occupied with fantasies of achievement, brilliance, beauty, and more. They demonstrate a sense of entitlement, and want and expect to be treated with extra favor, automatic compliance, and excessive admiration. They believe they are special, unique, and can only be understood by other special, high status individuals. Of importance, there is a noted lack of empathy and compassion for others. As a mental health counselor, I have treated a number of people who fit this narcissistic behavior. Many people exhibit one or more of these issues occasionally, and even frequently. That doesn't necessarily mean they are narcissists. And we need to be mindful of using labels when we talk about individual behavior. Narcissism is deeply engrained, and persistent over time. And it is, again, characterized by a note lack of empathy. Narcissism is challenging to overcome. It is a deep-rooted sense of self that stimulates and sustains the ego. It is a power thing, and often imposed on “victims.” A first step is for the narcissist to see that they actually have a disorder. Once that realization occurs, then the process of creating a more balanced, even, and compassionate life needs to occur. But this podcast is intended for the victims of those who are in a relationship with a narcissist. In this podcast, I help the listener understand whaat defines a true narcissist. Then we talk about what you can do if you are in a relationship with a narcissist. If you are, you understand the victimization that can take place. Finally, I provide some actions and techniques you can incorporate to begin healing. In this post-pandemic, stress-filled world, we need to be able to triumph over daily challenges – triumph over trauma, over emotional struggles, over physical and spiritual challenges, and more. During the pandemic, we became saturated with anxiety, chronic stress, depression, and maybe some addiction or substance abuse issues. Suddenly, this accumulation led us to break from reality. I call this a reality break resulting from oppressive anxiety. Most of us are somewhere within the spectrum of post-pandemic stress and saturation. Some are still struggling mightily with high anxiety saturation. Others are still just feeling “blah,” like you can't get your old mojo back. But now is the time to experience post-pandemic growth. In this podcast, I'm going to talk about how to not just keep yourself emotionally well, but to keep growing and achieving triumph over the challenges of daily life. The key is to create consistent resilience, reinforced by hope, strength, and balance. What happens when phobia and anxiety take hold of your life? For many of us, and especially Gen Z, we continue to struggle with a society that seems filled with stress, worry, and fear. There is a newer term that psychologists are using to describe the hopelessness and apathy being felt by many – especially Gen Z. It is the term foreshortened future. A foreshortened future describes those who don't see any hope for the future, who are struggling to sense their place in society, feel apathy and often withdraw from daily life. In this podcast, Dr. Jantz helps us understand why we feel such anxiety in today's world. He goes over phobias that can take hold of our thoughts, making us feel, say, and react in ways that are not who we want to be.
