10 years ago, Mother Jones investigator Shane Bauer went undercover at a private prison in Louisiana. Disguised as a prison guard, he observed the violence and neglect at Winn Correctional Center in Winnfield, Louisiana. His report drew the attention of many, including President Obama, who stated the government would discontinue sending federal inmates to private prison, which was ultimately unfulfilled when President Trump took office.10 years later, Winn is still operating. Now it serves as a processing and detention facility for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Bauer spoke with Louisiana Considered's Alana Schreiber about how he's reflected on the ten years since his investigation, and the state of the private prison industry today. You might look at other people and see them as confident, but despite your experience and successes, you still doubt yourself at times. In this conversation with Tara LaFon Gooch, 2X bestselling author and TEDx speaker, she shares her perspective - confidence is not a personality trait, it is a practice. It is not something you are born with, it is something you build. We explore why so many capable leaders chase success, when in fact, success is the byproduct of confidence. When confidence increases, competence is perceived to increase, trust strengthens and opportunities follow. This is not about projecting arrogance. It is about building self-trust. If confidence has ever felt elusive to you, this episode will give you practical ways to start. What You Will Learn: Why confidence is learnable, not innate Tara's GRASP framework for sustainable confidence How gratitude strengthens self-belief and leadership presence The link between confidence, trust and perceived competence Why small compounded action creates sustainable change How environment and purpose influence your level of confidence Confidence is not for everyone else. It is available for you too. Tara LaFon Gooch, MBA, is the CEO of Best Branding Solutions, a 2X bestselling author, international TEDx speaker, and host of the GRASP Confidence podcast, a top-ranked personal development show for leaders and high performers. Known for her GRASP Method (Gratitude, Responsibility, Action, Sight, Purpose), Tara helps leaders, speakers, and entrepreneurs build authentic confidence, expand their influence, and step boldly into their purpose. Today we dive into Part 2 of my conversation with Tara Lafon Gooch — an episode centered on what it really means to rewire your brain. This isn't just positive thinking. It's restructuring your mindset, reshaping your beliefs, and building a stronger foundation for your leadership and your life. Tara brings us back to the starting point of the GRASP Method: Gratitude. Gratitude isn't soft — it's hardwiring. It forms new beliefs, and when you form new beliefs, the old lies lose their power. From there comes Responsibility, the essence of self leadership. As Tara says, “You can't lead a team of many if you can't lead a team of one.” It starts with us. No victim mindset. No excuses. Own your choices, and you begin to transform your future. Then comes Action — the step none of us can skip. Tara reminds us: “An ounce of doing is worth more than a pound of theorizing.” Ideas don't change your life. Action does. “Hopes and dreams,” as I said — and Tara added, “Castles built with sand” — can only stand when you build on responsibility and intention. We also dig into vision and purpose. You can't know your purpose if you can't see where you're going. Too many of us live in the rearview mirror, replaying what already happened. Tara says it perfectly: you can't drive 70 mph while looking backwards. Your power as a leader is in the next step you take, not the step you regret. We talk about forgiveness, too — why we hold onto hurt to feel in control, and why real control actually comes from letting go. And Tara shares her own transformation — hitting rock bottom, surrendering, and finally hearing gratitude in a way that changed everything. “When the student is ready, the teacher appears.” And from that moment, she was never the same. Finally, Tara gives us a glimpse into her daily grounding: prayer, gratitude, Scripture, protecting her mind from comparison, and choosing family over scrolling. Small habits — 1% a day — that create long term transformation. This conversation will challenge and encourage you. It's about rewiring your thinking, reclaiming your power as a leader, and choosing the reality you want to build. Let's jump in.

On July 4th, my precious friend, Dr. Gregg Jantz, died in a tragic accident. I'm still in a state of shock as I write this email to you. If there has been anyone in my life who has done more good for the world, I can't imagine who that would be. Dr. J was a mental health WARRIOR and assisted thousands of people with eating disorders, addictions, and PTSD. I'd love for you to listen to our final podcast recording. Let me tell you how it came about. Steve and I ran into Dr. J and his wife, LaFon, at a church event. We ended up having lunch together, and I mentioned I would love to have him back on my podcast. At the end of our lunch, he handed me a note and said This is what I'd like to talk about: the impact of toxic people on our health. I read the note and said, That's exactly what I wanted you to talk about! On this podcast, he explains the impact of toxic people on our health, along with practical tips to take control back, all while protecting your peace. I've heard from so many of you about how this episode touched you and helped you remain peaceful in the presence of a difficult person. I'm grateful that Dr. Jantz used his gifts to make the world a healthier place.
