Ep.92 The Prophet Jonah Preaches at Nineveh, Jonah 1:1-4:11 World's Bible Story Library, Volume 5 In this episode Jonah was told by the God to go preach to the people of Nineveh. First Jonah tried to flee the presence of the Lord by jumping a ship to Tarshish which ended with Jonah in the belly of a fish. God spared his life and ordered him a second time to go preach to the people of Nineveh. This time Jonah obeyed and let the people know that the Lord would destroy their city unless they repented, the people repented. Because this is not the message that Jonah wanted to give to the people of Nineveh, he became angry with God and asked God to let him die, but God did not grant his wish. Jonah wanted a God who would punish evil. Question for the LISTENERS: Can we accept and love God as God is? Thank you for listening! Is God less than loving by commanding his prophet Jonah to go to Nineveh? No. God loves Jonah, but God has every right to call His servant to be His mouthpiece to a hostile nation. Is God less than loving if Jonah suffers persecution, torture, or death as a result of this assignment? No...God is never less than loving in anything God does because God IS love. But that's a hard pill to swallow, particularly if you are Jonah.Support the showThanks for listening! Follow us on Facebook or Instagram more info colonialkc.org

By Jonah 3, we see the prophet hearing the call of God, reinstated, and ready to go to Nineveh. We know Jonah went into the city and preached repentance. We know also that everyone in the city, from the king down to the citizenry, repented and fasted. By the end of the chapter, we see that God relents from His decision to destroy Nineveh. From this chapter alone, we learn much about how God feels towards the lost. As believers in Christ do we have this same care and compassion over those who do not know Him? Join me once again as we dive in and look at this amazing story!
The Rev. Nick Lannon preaches a sermon on Jonah. We need—and have—a God who will do all manner of seemingly impossible things in order to accomplish our salvation.

The book of JonahMatthew 12:40 (ESV)“For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”Jonah 1:1-2 (ESV)“Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah… saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.”Jonah 1:3 (ESV)“But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord.”Jonah 1:4 (ESV)“the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea”Jonah 1:5 (NIV)“Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep.”Jonah 1:9-10 (ESV)“I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.” Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him, “What is this that you have done!” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them.”Jonah 1:11-12 (ESV) “What shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us?” For the sea grew more and more tempestuous. He said to them, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you, for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.”Jonah 1:15 (ESV)“So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging.”Jonah 1:17a (ESV)“the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah.” Jonah 1:17b (ESV)“And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.”Jonah 2:6 (ESV)“you brought up my life from the pit, O Lord my God.” Jonah 2:7-9 (ESV)“When my life was fainting away, I remembered the Lord, and my prayer came to you…what I have vowed I will pay. Salvation belongs to the Lord!” Jonah 2:10 (ESV)“the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land”Jonah 3:1-3 (ESV)“Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.” So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh”Jonah 3:4 (ESV)“Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” Jonah 3:8 (ESV)“Let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands”Jonah 3:10 (ESV)“When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.”Acts 3:19-20 (ESV)“Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord”1 John 1:9 (NIV)“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”Jonah 4:2-4 (ESV)“O Lord, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster. Therefore now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.” And the Lord said, “Do you do well to be angry?”Jonah 4:8 (ESV)“It is better for me to die than to live.”Jonah 4:10 (NLT) “Then the Lord said, “You feel sorry about the plant, though you did nothing to put it there. It came quickly and died quickly. But Nineveh has more than 120,000 people living in spiritual darkness, not to mention all the animals. Shouldn't I feel sorry for such a great city?”

POPULAR DECEPTIONS OF OUR DAY:Deception #8: The God of the Old Testament is a Vindictive BullyPastor Jay Childs God's Mercy on Adam and Eve (Genesis 2-3)God's Mercy on Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 18-19)God's Mercy on King Ahab (1 Kings 21)God's Mercy on King Manasseh (2 Chronicles 33)The Great Love Chapter (Psalm 136)God's Coming Sacrifice for Sin (Isaiah 53)God's Mercy on Nineveh (Jonah)
In the huge city of Nineveh Jonah warns them that because of their great wickedness and violence God will destroy their city. He rather enjoyed pronouncing God's judgment against them, but they humbled themselves before God and repented with prayer and fasting and the wearing of sackcloth. When the forty days were up, Jonah was outside the city on a hill waiting to witness the prophesied destruction. He is disappointed when God, because of their repentance, in his great mercy forgives the men of Nineveh.
In this sermon, pastor Mitch reminds us of the profound truth this familiar story teaches us: that God is rich in mercy for all who turn from their sin and take him at his word. Here we find the irrefutable proof that God does not desire the death of the wicked but that all should repent and believe his word.
In 1854, a young Russian artillery officer viewed the battlefield carnage occurring far below his cannon’s hilltop placement. “It’s a funny sort of pleasure,” Leo Tolstoy wrote, “to see people killing each other. And yet, every morning and every evening, I would . . . spend hours at a time watching.” Tolstoy’s outlook soon changed. After seeing firsthand the devastation and suffering in the city of Sevastopol, he wrote, “You understand all at once, and quite differently from what you have before, the significance of those sounds of shots which you heard in the city.” The prophet Jonah once climbed a hill to view the devastation of Nineveh (Jonah 4:5). He’d just warned that brutal city of God’s looming judgment. But Nineveh repented, and Jonah was disappointed. The city, however, relapsed into evil, and a century later the prophet Nahum described its destruction. “Shields flash red in the sunlight!” he wrote. “Watch as their glittering chariots move into position, with a forest of spears waving above them” (Nahum 2:3 nlt). Because of Nineveh’s persistent sin, God sent punishment. But He’d told Jonah, “Nineveh has more than 120,000 people living in spiritual darkness. . . . Shouldn’t I feel sorry for such a great city?” (Jonah 4:11 nlt). God justice and love go together. Nahum shows the consequences of evil. Jonah reveals God’s keen compassion for even the worst of us. His heart’s desire is that we repent and extend that compassion to others.
Pastor Mike Dahl brings us a message of God's love through both judgement and mercy.
This week, pastor Jason Knapp is beginning a new sermon series in the book of Jonah entitled: "God's Abounding Love". This sermon's passage of Scripture is Jonah 1:1-3. Here is the Sermon Outline: Taking God's Way or the Highway 1) Jonah, son of Amittai (Jonah 1:1) 2) Jonah, go to Nineveh (Jonah 1:2) 3) Jonah fled from the Lord (Jonah 1:3)

“GO” This is more than a Theme for a year; it's a life time commitment. The most effective way to do it, is to just “do it” Matthew 28:19 (NIV) - 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, This instruction is very clear; however, it would appear the problem lies by the implementation of this command, not a suggestion. Acts 4:12 (NIV) - 12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” If we don't “Go” how will mankind be saved? What is God's heart toward the lost? 2 Peter 3:9 (NIV) – The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 1 Timothy 2:4-5 (NIV) – 4Who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus. John 3 :16-17 (NIV) – 16For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. The question is, why would God delay the coming of the Lord, when I'm sure He knows it is impossible that the whole world will repent? The only answer can be, that God knows it is POSSIBLE This is where you and I come into God's great plan of salvation We have been called to “GO” 2 Corinthians 5:19-20 (NIV) – 19That God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting people's sins against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as through God were making His appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. I thought about calling this message “It's Time to Go” but I was afraid you'd get up and leave. But one thing is for sure: We have reached a great crossroad as a church… We have come to a STOP sign - and pause for the cause. We look right and left and consider God's will, we must not just sit and idle, we should rather turn the throttle and say, it's GO time! Mark 16:15 - “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. What are the first 2 letters of the gospel? GO! Psalm 126:6 - Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy carrying sheaves with them. Nothing happens until we go! If no one reaches no one get touched Acts 5:20 - Go, stand, and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life. Most Christians are standing, but you must stand out. Many Christians are breaking some ground; but you must breakthrough. Not many are going, don't you be one of them! God reminded me of the Prophet Jonah. How similar this story is to many Christians today? Jonah 1:1-5 (NIV) – The word of the Lord cam to Jonah son of Amittai: 2”Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.” 3But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord. 4Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up. 5All the sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. NOTICE GOD called him!! When God said GO to Nineveh – Jonah decided to Go to Tarshish Verse 2: You must be aware that God sees the ungodly world and how desperately they need to hear about the Saviour. What we learn from Jonah is that there are consequences to our disobedience Verse 5: Notice the indifference of Jonah The sailors were struggling for their lives, and Jonah had the answer -- he was taking a nap! Romans 13:11 (NIV) – And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber. Because our salvation is nearer now that when we first believed. Is Jonah's life a reflection of your life. How many people will end up in hell because you didn't go What are the regular excuses you make because you are not Going? Jonah 4:2 (NIV) – He prayed to the Lord, “Isn't this what I said, Lord, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. What are you allowing into your life that is causing you to choose comfort, convenience, avoidance? What are you afraid of when it comes to sharing your faith? 2 Timothy 3:12 (NIV) – On fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. Do you really believe that you are called to GO?
Hello and welcome to the show today! You will remember that last week we talked about Peter's healing of a lame man by the name of Aeneas and how for (Aeneas) that healing completely changed the way he would live his life forever. And today Peter will perform another healing; and in many ways it is a healing that grows out of the people's response to the healing of Aeneas. It says in… Acts 9:35 (NKJV)— 35 So all who dwelt at Lydda and Sharon saw him and turned to the Lord. People Established— Sharon is the plain surrounding Lydda and Joppa, and which extends N to Caesarea.] And so, as we see so often in the book of Acts (cf. ch. 3), this healing leads to the further spread of the Gospel, as [The news spread beyond the town of Lydda to the whole coastal plain of Sharon.] And I mean just seeing this man {walking} was enough to convince everyone who saw him that Jesus was indeed alive and that they needed to place their faith in Him (See John 12:10–11 for a similar instance.). And Peter no doubt was engaging these people, teaching them; discipling them; moving them beyond just the fireworks of the healing to their being able to actually experience in their own lives the presence of God in and through Jesus Christ and the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit as well. And so Peter was being faithful to the commission Jesus had given him in John 21:15-17 to care for the sheep and help them to get established in the faith. And if we are to truly be the Church, that must always be our focus as well. Now it says… Acts 9:36a (NKJV)— 36 At Joppa there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, which is translated Dorcas. Joppa— Now Joppa was a seacoast harbor town that is known today as Jaffa/Yaffa, and is S of Tel Aviv and 11 miles (18km) northwest of Lydda. It [sits 125 feet above sea level overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. {And it may interest you to know that} Joppa was the town into which the cedars of Lebanon had been floated to be shipped to Jerusalem for use in the Temple construction (2 Chronicles 2:16; Ezra 3:7 ).] But perhaps even more emblazoned in your memory is the fact that it was from the port at Joppa that Jonah left in his attempt to flee from God's call to go to the Gentile city of Nineveh (Jonah 1:3). And that was both because of Jonah's hatred of the Ninevites, but also (more generally) because of his nationalist attitude when it came to his faith. In his mind God was for Israel and Israel alone. But God has such a wonderful sense of humor; and sometimes we don't notice it unless we step back and look at the overall spread of human history. Because (as we will see in our passage next week) it is in Joppa that Peter receives his call to go to the Gentiles! The Jews of the time probably immediately picked up on the irony here. And in both stories God sends a mighty wind. In Jonah's story it took the form of a storm that causes the Gentile sailors to tremble in fear. But we will see that here it will be the “wind of the Spirit”, who will bring to the Gentiles joy and peace. Such an amazing and beautiful contrast. The Gazelle— Now in Joppa it says there was a certain disciple named Tabitha. And she may have been [more commonly known by her Gr. name, “Dorcas.”] Now while we don't know too much about her, if she is anything like her name, she was a very beautiful person because “Tabitha” (like Dorcas) [means Gazelle, "the creature with the beautiful look" (or eyes)… {If you know a bit about ancient writings, you'll know that} The gazelle was a favourite type for beauty in the orient (Song of Solomon, Acts 2:9, 17; Acts 4:5; Acts 7:3).] But I don't think it was her outward beauty that most attracted people. It says in the rest of verse 36… Acts 9:36b (NKJV)— This woman was full of good works and charitable deeds which she did. Who God Uses— And so we see that the way Tabitha impacted her community was by [“always doing kind things for others and helping the poor,” by making “coats and other clothing” (9:39). {And we see that} When she died, the room was filled with mourners, very likely many of the people she had helped.] And you know that speaks volumes to us about the nature of how and who God uses. Kelcie Huffman's Funeral— I remember being part of a funeral service for a man from our former church in Ohio; a man by the name of Kelcie Huffman; the kindest, sweetest guy you could ever meet. When I think of men who truly embody what it means to live a godly life, his life will ever be a picture to me of what that looks like. A man always looking for ways to help others. In fact right when I got to that Church he asked me if he could come with me on hospital visitations to help be an encouragement to those in the church who needed it. And looking back, I could count on one hand the people who have ever offered to do that. And I remember just how astonished I was; of all the ministries to volunteer for, that can often be one of the most difficult and (at times) disheartening. But he didn't care. He wanted to be right where the greatest needs was. Now you know what position he held in the Church? He was our janitor. And yet at his viewing would you guess it, the line of people who came to see him and say their goodbyes stretched around our huge sanctuary and out into the parking lot. And usually you'd expect the lines to dissipate after a while, which is what I expected. But hour after hour the line of people continued to move in through our double doors in the back; people who had been impacted by this tiny little man. It was the largest gathering I ever participated in in all my years of pastoral ministry. And for who? Not a big church leader; not a mighty evangelist; but for a quiet and assuming man who was simply willing to show God's love to other people. And what this shows you and me is that while God can (and often does) use great preachers like Peter and Paul, he also uses the Tabithas; the Kelcies of the world as instruments of His kindness and healing in the world. And so maybe rather than looking around and wanting the gifts of other Christians, we ought instead to ask God to help us to make good use of the gifts God has already given us. Now it must have seemed so tragic to lose such a beloved person like Tabitha, especially because people like her are so greatly needed by the Church today. But it says… Acts 9:37 (NKJV)— 37 But it happened in those days that she became sick and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room. Irreplaceable— You know, in recent days we at our Church here at Renton Park Chapel have faced a very similar loss as a couple of weeks ago we had a memorial service for a very dear member of our congregation. And that is a hard blow to take. During ministry over the years I have seen heaven gain so many great men and women who were very difficult to replace; never were really replaced, honestly. And in times like that, all we can can really say is what Job proclaimed in Job 1:21: “The LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD”. But death can be hard to process. And it was no different here. The Interment— It says that when they had washed Tabitha, they laid her in an upper room. [This arrangement was similar to that of the upstairs room in 1:13; 2:1.] [It was a Jewish custom first to wash the dead body, and then to anoint it with spices for burial.] And it is important to note that the interment was not hurried as it probably would have been in Jerusalem, where it was customary to bury the body immediately, as they did with Ananias and Sapphira. Here they take their time, even though the final result they expected to be the same. However, then comes a wonderful bit of news. It says in… Acts 9:38 (NKJV)— 38 And since Lydda was near Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent two men to him, imploring him not to delay in coming to them. Faith-filled Believers— Now it is very clear that these early Christians recognized [that an unusual level of the Holy Spirit's power was present in the apostles.] But at the same time, this shows a tremendous amount of faith because there is no record in Acts that any of the apostles had raised the dead. And yet here they are convinced that the God who would heal a lame person in Lydda could also raise a dead woman in Joppa. And their logic was probably very simple; like the faith of a child. If Jesus raised the dead during His ministry on earth, is He any less powerful now that He is sitting on His heavenly throne? No, if anything, you would think He was MORE powerful. And you know what, I just LOVE that rationale. What could God do through us if we were to believe like that? Now does that mean that God will raise every dead person; that He will heal every lame or sick person. No it doesn't. Note that Stephen (whom you could also argue was greatly needed by the Church); God didn't choose to raise him. And there were sicknesses and infirmities in Paul's life that God allowed him to struggle with. But that doesn't mean we should believe in God's power any less. It just means that God is going to be glorified differently in that situation or circumstance. But this passage does reveal to us that God will be faithful to do whatever He impresses upon our hearts to ask Him to do; whatever He is leading you to pray for. Remember that Peter wasn't acting on the basis of his own wishes; but rather was being led by the Holy Spirit into doing what God already intended to do from the start. And not just through the Holy Spirit speaking directly to him; but also the Holy Spirit speaking to him through other believers. Serving The People— And something interesting that can often times get overlooked about Peter's ministry (and really that of all the apostles) is the fact that while at times they may have told other people what to do, we see that [often the people commanded them!… {I love how here in this verse, not only do they send two men to implore Peter to come, but to come without delay. In other words “Don't be tardy! Get here quickly!” And Peter obeys. You see Peter was a leader who {recognized that he} served the people and {therefore he} was ready to respond to their call.] That (in and of itself) is an incredible picture to me of what godly leadership looks like. It says in… Acts 9:39 (NKJV)— 39 Then Peter arose and went with them. When he had come, they brought him to the upper room. And all the widows stood by him weeping, showing the tunics and garments which Dorcas had made while she was with them. The Widows— So we see that [When Peter arrived in the upper room where Dorcas lay in death, he finds a group of weeping widows who had been helped by her ministry. Keep in mind that there was no “government aid” in those days for either widows or orphans, and needy people had to depend on their “network” for assistance. {Well, Tabitha was a part of that network. And we must never forget that} The church {still} has an obligation to help people who are truly in need (1 Tim. 5:3–16; James 1:27).] Government programs can sometimes do some good; but no entity is as powerful and effective at ministering to the poor and needy as the Church; because the Church is the very extension of the hand of God. And you can't beat God when it comes to loving the poor and disenfranchised. Garments— Now as these widows are standing around Peter, weeping, they are presenting (literally pointing to) the garments she had made. And these were both inner garments (which were worn underneath), but also outer garments (very similar to the Latin tunica and toga). And I mean this was such a heart-breaking scene. But it says… Acts 9:40-41 (NKJV)— 40 But Peter put them all out {(just as Jesus had done when He was about to raise Jairus' daughter; Peter is following the pattern of his Master. And then it says}, and knelt down and prayed {(which, by the way is very similar to what Elijah had done before raising the dead son of the widow in 1 Kings 17:20 and what Elisha had done before raising the Shunammite's son in 2 Kings 4:33) Peter didn't just somehow know what to do; no, he followed the pattern of Jesus, which was also the pattern given in scripture. And it says…}. And turning to the body he said, “Tabitha, arise.” And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up. 41 Then {(just as Jesus had done with Jairus' daughter)} he gave her his hand {(not being afraid to be defiled)} and lifted her up {(By the way, [The Greek verb for raised her up is the same word used throughout the NT for Jesus' resurrection (Gk. anistēmi). {And so} Though her restoration to life was not permanent, it served to remind Christians of their promised resurrection in Christ.] Now after Peter lifted her up, it says…)}; and when he had called the saints and widows, he presented her alive. Joyous Celebration— And we cannot even begin to imagine the eruption of joy this created amongst all the people. I mean imagine the celebration; the partying. They probably had the funeral dinner all ready and set to go (probably with all of Tabitha's favorite foods) and (lo and behold) she gets to partake of it. How awesome is that! And I would even say that this was a blessing for Peter as well, who was not only excited that God had raised Tabitha, but that He was willing to do so through him just as He had done through His Master Jesus. And let me tell you, we need to learn exactly what Peter learned that day; that God is willing to move in and through us as well to do His mighty works. Now it says of this miracle… Acts 9:42 (NKJV)— 42 And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed on the Lord. And of course those believers needed a Shepherd; a discipler. And so the kind-hearted, Jesus-like Peter does exactly what he had done in Samaria. It says in… Acts 9:43 (NKJV)— 43 So it was that he stayed many days in Joppa with Simon, a tanner. Peter's Preparation— And so we see that (because a faith based on miracles is not enough) Peter takes the opportunity to ground these new believers in the truth of God's Word. And it is a good thing he tarried here in Joppa, because (as we will see) God meets him here in an amazing new way, instructing him to use his keys to the Kingdom of Heaven to open up the kingdom to the next group of people; the Gentiles. And even now we see God breaking down the barriers Peter had previously had for certain types of people, as we see that he is staying with a man by the name of Simon, a tanner. Not only was this a smelly job (because it involved working with animal hides; which would explain his location close to the ocean breezes (10:6), but this also meant he was often left in an unclean state,] which is why it was [an occupation despised by Jewish society because the tanner dealt with the skins of dead animals. The local synagogue probably shunned Simon.] [One of the rabbis said: "It is impossible for the world to do without tanners; but woe to him who is a tanner." A Jewess could {actually} sue for divorce if she discovered that her husband was a tanner.] But lo and behold Peter (once again, just like Jesus) is willing to break out of the prejudice in order to meet the needs of people. And so God is already at work in Peter's heart. And as we close today, let us also ask God to work in our heart; to make us like Peter and like Tabitha; to (no matter what ministry He calls us to) to keep at the forefront the needs of people; and for us to have the faith that God can and is willing to do whatever He is calling and leading us to do in the lives of those around us. Let's do so. Amen.

The Repentance of Nineveh
Chapters 1 & 2 – Jonah acts like the prodigal son who ran from his Father in disobedience (Lk 15:11-24). • An act of rebellion – Jonah disobeyed God’s call o God said go to Nineveh, Jonah went 180 degrees the other way • An act of mistrust – Jonah did not trust God’s goodness o Jonah did not believe it was good to warn Nineveh Chapters 3 & 4 – Jonah acts like the older brother who was angry at his father for his mercy toward sinners (Lk 15:25-32). • An attitude of self-righteousness o He believed only his people were “worthy” of God’s grace. Jonah acts like the priest and the Levite who pass by the the wounded man in the parable of the Good Samaritan (Lk 10:29-37). • An attitude of comfortable self-absorption • An attitude of indifference toward others One God Who Abounds in Compassion • God pursues the rebel o “The Lord hurled a great wind… appointed a great fish” (Jonah 1:4, 17) o “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced” (Lk 15:20) • God invites the self-righteous into his acts of grace o “Arise, go to Nineveh…” (Jonah 3:2) o “His father came out and entreated him.” (Lk 15:28b) • God shows the self-absorbed and indifferent their need for change. o “Should I not pity the 120,000 [lost] persons” (Jonah 4:11) o “He said, ‘The one who showed him mercy.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘You go, and do likewise.’” (Lk 10:37) Can God save the rebel who runs from God? Can He cure the self-righteous attitude that looks down on “others”? Can he heal a comfortable, self-absorbed heart, that is indifferent to “others”? Philippians 2:3-11 Christ’s Example of Humility Jesus is wholly other from us. He is eternal and glorious. Jesus himself is the One Who is wholly “other” from us. • In him the fullness of God dwells. (Col 2:9) • He is the image of the invisible God.(Col 1:15) • He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature (Heb 1:3) Yet, he emptied (and humbled) himself to be like us: fragile, mortal. He humbled himself further to be a servant. He humbled himself further to die in our place. He humbled himself further to die in shame on a cross. Can God save the rebel who runs from God? • Christ came to to give his life as a ransom for yours, • that you might be reconciled to your Father. No one is beyond his reach. Can He cure the self-righteous attitude that looks down on “others”? • He came as wholly “other”, different from you to show you that you can not save yourself. Can he heal a comfortable, self-absorbed heart, that is indifferent to “others”? • Christ came precisely because God will NOT be comfortable and indifferent while his children are lost. • God took drastic and costly action to demonstrate his love for you. • He gave us a perfect example to follow. Jesus finished the parable of the Good Samaritan this way… Luke 10:36-37 36 Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?"37 He said, "The one who showed him mercy." And Jesus said to him, "You go, and do likewise."
Lectio Divina with Cardinal Thomas Collins - Archdiocese of Toronto
Cardinal Thomas Collins delivers a reflection on Jonah's Mission to Nineveh (Jonah 3 and 4)
Dear Manna Family, The Bible is a record of the extreme measures that God took throughout history in order to reconcile the human race to Himself. This world-wide Covid-19 pandemic is certainly an extreme event that God is using to draw people to Himself. Today we want to look at the book of Jonah which may be one of the greatest illustrations of John 3:16 that is recorded in the Old Testament. This book demonstrates that the God of the Bible loves the whole world, even the enemies of God’s own people. God called Jonah to pronounce judgement on Israel’s enemies, the Assyrian Empire. Miraculously, the entire capital city of Nineveh, about 500,000 people, repented, and God graciously held back His judgment for another 150 years. Instead of being thrilled, Jonah became bitter because God showed mercy toward the people that he hated. Jonah 3:10 When God saw their deeds that they turned away from their wicked way, then God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would bring upon them. And He did not do it. 4:1 But it greatly displeased Jonah, and he became angry. Vs 2 And he prayed to the LORD and said, “Please LORD, was not this what I said while I was still in my own country? Therefore in order to forestall this I fled to Tarshish, for I knew that You are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, and one who relents concerning calamity. Vs 3 “Therefore now, O LORD, please take my life from me, for death is better to me than life.” When God called Jonah to go to Nineveh Jonah tried to run away from God. Jonah is an illustration of the proverb, “you can run, but you can’t hide.” God sent a storm and a great fish after Jonah in order to get His disobedient prophet to Nineveh. Jonah was not afraid that Nineveh would reject God, he was afraid that God would accept Nineveh, which is exactly what happened. When Jonah preached, Nineveh repented, God forgave them, and Jonah became angry because God showed mercy to Israel’s enemies. Jonah really thought that God should love who he loved and hate who he hated. He forgot that God’s purpose in blessing Israel was so that they would be a blessing to others by telling them about their gracious God. We often forget how much God loves people, even the ones we don’t love. God loves people enough to do extreme things to bring them to Himself; things like allowing a global pandemic. People are now reconsidering their lives, and some are more open to discuss spiritual realities. Some people may only come to Christ and go to heaven……….because of this virus. Let’s ask God to help us see people like He sees them, and love them like He loves them. We have been saved so that we can tell others how to be saved as well. After all, God loves them just like He loves us. Remember, God designed us to “do life together!” Love and prayers, Brad ••• Subscribe to listen each week as the Manna class learns and grows together through their in-depth study of God's Word. 2012/03/11 - The Overthrow of Nineveh (Jonah 3) | Pastor Michael Chung by Indelible Grace Church
Jonah became angry when God relented of his wrath, having mercy upon Nineveh (Jonah 4:1) specifically because he knew God would be a merciful and gracious God. Jesus, in Matthew 12:40-41, responds to the Pharisees, likening himself to Jonah in his bearing (and in his being!) the word of God, and his death and resurrection. Yet Jesus says, “something greater than Jonah is here.” (Matt. 12:41). Jesus not only speaks the word of God, he is the Word of God, bearing sin, bringing both judgement and mercy.

Sermons from our Sunday Services at St.Peter's Free Church, Dundee
When Jonah disobeyed God in not going to Nineveh (Jonah 2), God had already prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. Inside the great fish, Jonah acknowledges his disobedience and vows to turn around and do what God had asked him to do. When we SIN, we shouldn't just say we made a mistake. That would make us a MISTAKER, not a SINNER. When we sin, the only way to be free from the guilt we feel is to REPENT and TURN AROUND - to quit sinning with the help of God. If you are a mistaker, you will keep trying to get better. If you are a sinner, then you need a Savior.
Open air preaching can be Loving, compelling, intellectually stimulating and engaging. There is a method, I am looking forward to sharing with you some tips and effective principles to reaching many with the gospel at one time! You may could never see yourself open air proclaiming the gospel....... neither could I! Is it a biblical and effective way to share the gospel?Who else Open Air preached? Great preachers such as Billy Graham, Ray Comfort, Charles Spurgeon, Jonathan Edwards, George Whitfield, Charles Finney, D.L. Moody,The Apostle Paul, Peter, John, The prophet Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Jesus.Noah was a “herald of righteousness” (2 Peter 2:5).Solomon addressed the entire nation of Israel “with a loud voice” (1 Kings 8:54-56).Ezra called the people of Israel to repentance as they sat in the “open square” (Ezra 10:9-14).Ezra read the law of God and explained it to the people of Israel while standing before them (Nehemiah 8:1-8).Jeremiah stood at the gate of the Lord’s House and “proclaimed” the very words of God (Jeremiah 7:1-3).Jonah preached on the streets of Nineveh (Jonah 3:1-5).The prophets of old were hated by the people, because they heralded the word of God at the city gates (Isaiah 5:29; Amos 5:10).The first street preacher, the first to herald the good news in the open-air, was John the Baptist (Matthew 3:1-2; Mark 1:4; Luke 3:3).Jesus sat atop a hill and preached the greatest sermon ever preached in the open-air -- the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7).Jesus’s disciples preached on the streets in many villages (Luke 9:5-7).Peter preached in the open-air at Solomon’s Portico, after healing the lame beggar (Acts 3:11-26).Philip preached the gospel to large crowds on the streets of the city of Samaria (Acts 8:6-8).Paul preached the gospel to the entire city of Antioch. He was viciously heckled, yet all those whom God had appointed to be saved believed the gospel (Acts 13:44-52).Apollos boldly and publicly refuted the Jews and proclaimed Christ Jesus in Achaia (Acts 18:27-28).Paul stood before the judiciary of Athens, atop of Mars Hill, and preached to the men of Athens in the open-air (Acts 17:22-34).The Scriptures are rich with examples of street preaching. Street preaching is clearly a biblical practice, and those who engage in it follow in the footsteps of great men of the faith and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
PRAYER THAT CONNECTS - “FASTING” (series) Nov 26, 2017 Matt. 6:1 Be careful not to display your righteousness merely to be seen by people. Otherwise you have no REWARD from your Father in heaven... In the next 8 verses Jesus lists the 3 Christian Displays of Righteousness that GOD REWARDS: Praying, Giving, & Fasting Jesus didn’t say IF, but WHEN you Give, Pray & Fast GOD Expects us to Fast because He Plans to reward it. 2Chr. 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall HUMBLE themselves, and pray, and SEEK my face, and TURN from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. There can be no doubt that GOD desires to Forgive the sins of His people and Heal our lands. But there must first be a Humbling, Seeking, and Turning, on our part. Fasting empowers Humbling, Seeking, and Turning by redirecting our dependence on natural food into desire for greater closeness with the LORD. Fasting repositions our desire over our dependence It's simply curbing the appetite of the flesh in order to increase our appetite for the things of GOD. DANIEL — In Daniel’s 1st fast (ch 9) he prays with repentance for Israel’s sins, after discovering Jeremiah’s prophecy of 70 years of captivity is completed. And is visited by the angel Gabriel. In his 2nd fast (ch 10) Daniel prays 21 days (fasting) for the explanation of a vision. An angel is dispatched with the answer, on day one, but fights the demon of Persia during the 21 days, before breaking through! How many Answers, Breakthroughs, and Deliverances, have not reached us because we don’t fast, or quit too soon? In many areas we receive partial blessings without complete victories, because our faith needs to be applied with fasting... The disciples ask Jesus why they couldn’t cast the devil out of a seizure-ridden boy. And He replies...Matt. 17:20 “It was because of your little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; nothing will be impossible for you. Mark 9:29 And he said unto them, This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting. Sometimes the answers from GOD that we seek remain beyond reach, waiting for Faith through Fasting to hit critical mass and vault over the walls of impossibility. Fasting Is a way of reprioritizing yourself; making the demands of your body subservient to your spirit. In Jn 4, when the disciples brought food to Jesus, he said, “I have food to eat that you don’t understand. My food is to do the will of Him who sent me, and to complete His tasks.” Paul writes in Ro 12:1-2, Therefore I exhort you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a sacrifice—alive, holy, and pleasing to God–which is your reasonable service. Do not be conformed to this present world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may test and approve what is the will of God—what is good and well-pleasing and perfect. GOD has perfect plans for your life, your family, ministry, and job. Don't you want to know what they are and apprehend them? Fasting is a holy & healthy way for you to make your body a sacrifice to GOD, so that your Mind can be renewed, and you can KNOW THE PERFECT WILL OF GOD. Who are the people on your boat and do they know the hope you have in Christ? The captain asked Jonah how is it you are sleeping, don't you know we are dying here? Have we forgotten that we were once dying as well? If we belong to Christ then we no longer have a right to be absorbed with our "goals", but rather we are free to follow God's calling on our lives.
