I am so excited to share this episode of Getting to the Heart of Why We Write with you featuring author Christine J. Ko! She is a part of Picture Book Peeps with me and appears regularly on our shared podcast, The Curious Compassionate.  Please enjoy hearing about her writing journey and her book, Sound Switch Wonder illustrated by Katie Crumpton, which she co wrote with her son, Owen Whang. So cool! Some Highlights: “I love books and I think books can change the world. They can change people and by changing people, they can change the world.” Ideas in Confucianism (shared with Christianity) that keep some narratives from being told. Finding gratitude through reading and questioning structures in place. “We cannot forget what humanity is capable of–each one of us. I think the remembrance of it will keep that kind of thing from ever happening again. Because we have the capability to be monstrous, sadly.” “Each one of us is unique, you really can't assume one person's experience is the same as another even if they maybe have outward characteristics that are similar. I really love the fact that more and more and more you can find more books with different experiences in them.” Links Mentioned

I forbindelse med Edderkoppesagen blev han dømt for at have taget imod bestikkelse, og sågar for at have holdt vagt ved et indbrud i fuld uniform. "Maybe it's a testament to a hardy relationship that there was no resulting argument. Without thinking, I blurted out, 'You are so sexist!' I could immediately tell by my husband's face, his upper eyelids and eyebrows lifted a bit, his mouth freeze-framed in a small 'o' — my exclamation surprised and insulted him. Maybe it was a completely unfair assessment; after all, he was standing at the sink, his hands covered in soap, washing the dinner dishes. Can you be sexist and clean up after a meal? Can you be sexist and love your spouse? Can you be sexist and a female MD?" Christine J. Ko is a dermatopathologist. When we talk about 'rights' and 'justice' are we assuming that there is a shared understanding or universal definition of what those are? In this episode, Manchester Museum's Curator of Indigenous Perspectives Dr Alexandra P. Alberda is joined by Dr Christine J. Winter to expand on these ideas, discuss what Indigenous Rights can encompass from different cultural perspectives, and examine what role museums can play in supporting this work in a meaningful way. Dr Christine J. Winter is a lecturer in the Department of Government & International Relations at the University of Sydney. Her research focuses at the intersection of intergenerational, indigenous and environmental justice. Drawing on her Anglo-Celtic-Māori cultural heritage she is interested in decolonising political theory by identifying key epistemological and ontological assumptions in theory that are incompatible with indigenous philosophies. In doing so she has two aims: to make justice theory just for Indigenous peoples of the settler states; and to expand the boundaries of theories of intergenerational justice to protect the environment for future generations of Indigenous Peoples and their settler compatriots. Christine Winter is the Research Lead on The Re-(E)mergence of Nature in Culture. Season 3: Episode 1 Transcript ----- Manchester Museum is on a mission to become the most imaginative, caring and inclusive museum in the world, and in this podcast we will share open and honest conversations with special guests, which will inform, entertain and inspire. Through these conversations we hope to reframe what it means for museums to care, and explore how we can build understanding, empathy and love for our world and each other.

What are some unexplored ways that online environments can help us rethink “the archive”? How might i-doc storytelling tools expand what an archive can be as well as public engagement with history itself? This presentation explores these questions through a demonstration of the online Southeast Chicago Archive and Storytelling Project. The project is based on a collaboration with the Southeast Chicago Historical Museum, a small volunteer-led museum in a diverse former steel mill region. The digital archive highlights objects saved and donated by community residents, what those items meant to donors, and the stories told around and through these objects. The website uses a variety of online storytelling techniques to help viewers connect with the objects and the histories from which they emerge. It also highlights how the historic conflicts found in this multi-racial working-class community – including those around labor, immigration, racial, and environmental struggles – continue to resonate in the contemporary moment. The website helps diverse working-class histories come alive for viewers through both objects and the spoken word in ways that are simultaneously striking and reflective of everyday life. Presenters include creative director and i-doc pioneer Jeff Soyk and the project directors, anthropologist Chris Walley and filmmaker Chris Boebel. Jeff Soyk is an award-winning media artist with credits as creative director and UI/UX designer on PBS Frontline’s Inheritance (2016 News & Documentary EMMY winner and Peabody-Facebook Award winner) as well as art director, UI/UX designer and architect on Hollow (2013 Peabody Award winner and News & Documentary EMMY nominee). Christine J. Walley is a Professor of Anthropology at MIT. She is the award-winning author of Exit Zero: Family and Class in Post-Industrial Chicago (University of Chicago Press, 2013) and a co-creator of a documentary film Exit Zero: An Industrial Family Story (2017). Chris Boebel is Director of Media Development at MIT Open Learning, where he oversees media production for professional education and explores the uses of media in education, including VR and interactive media. A filmmaker by training, he has produced and directed feature films, documentaries, and television. His work has been shown on many networks around the world, including PBS and the BBC, and at more than 50 film festivals, including Sundance.
