Join us as coach DJ Butler of Barnesville High School (OH) sits across from me, Ken Carpenter, and we unravel the playbook to success that transcends mere wins and losses. We dissect the crucial foundations set by youth programs and the ethos of self-improvement that can turn any coach into an architect of victory. Our conversation ventures into the unique terrain of small-town sports, where each player's contribution is magnified, and the challenges of indoor practices are met with inventive strategies. The echoes of cheers from the Ohio Valley are still fresh as we reminisce about the high school baseball team's heart-stopping journey through a regional tournament. Making their second appearance in the state final four. It's a tale of perseverance, community bonds, and the embrace of chance moments that can define a season. We recount the energy of a 12-inning game that danced with the twilight and reflect on the deep-rooted support systems from parents, administrators, and entire towns that fuel the passion and dedication of long-standing coaches like Coach Butler. But what about when the cleats are off, and it's time to address the delicate waltz between coaches, parents, and athletes? Sharing from my own coaching playbook, I open up about the strategies that foster clear communication, respect, and understanding within the team's extended family. We pay homage to the value of alumni in linking the past with the present and future of the program. It's not just a game; it's a lineage of shared experiences and wisdom that Coach Butler and I are thrilled to pass on to you, our engaged listeners, in a discussion that's as enriching as it is enlightening.Support the show Follow: Twitter | Instagram @Athlete1Podcast https://www.athlete1.net Sponsor: The Netting Professionals https://www.nettingpros.com
When it comes to outfield play, Andre Butler is one of the best in the coaching profession at developing high level outfielders. With 11 years of coaching experience he's never been more passionate about the outfield position than now. Dating back to 2012, Coach Butler noticed the lack of outfield attention given to players at the high school and collegiate level. Since then he has created an aggressive mentality that allows players to play free and easy while having a plan for their every move. In the Graveyard we use both mechanics and mentality to form the complete outfielder. We also embrace the idea of playing multiple positions. Graveyard Training offers defensive and hitting sessions. We're making Team Player Podcast history for a 4th week in a row as we welcome our 1st ever coach who works with our middle school athletes into the Team Player Studios! He has worked at all 3 levels - elementary, middle, and high school, and his list of accomplishments was so long that Coach Kovo had to take a water break to read them all! He is the Athletic Coordinator of the record-breaking, uber-successful Jones Toro athletic program and an old friend, welcome Laurentis Butler-Thomas to the show! - Growing up in Rushwood, TX in the Greater Greenspoint/Spring area right at the confluence of 3 school districts, where he could have just as easily went to Eisenhower (Aldine ISD) or Klein Forest (Klein ISD) as he did Westfield (Spring ISD) - It was Westfield where he ended up at and Coach is a true student of Westfield history, and names off a laundry list of Mustang greats, including some legendary coaches he played for such as Emory Bellard who is credited as the Father of the Wishbone Offense! - Laurentis is the true example of someone who was doing amazing things for years in relative obscurity because he wasn't racking up championships early on in his career. But he kept working hard and loving kids, and once he got his big opportunity, boy did he ever take advantage of it! Great reminder to all of us coaches that our value is defined by more than just wins and losses! - For the 2nd week in a row do not call this man a Texans fan! Much like Jerry Hurtado the week before, Laurentis bled Powder Blue, but instead of taking his fandom to Tennessee like Jerry, Coach Butler reps Them Boyz!! We do another fun Oilers Mount Rushmore with a slightly newer generation than last week, and for any Westfield and Aldine alums, you are in for a real treat as we do a special edition of Westfield HS and Aldine ISD Mt. Rushmores!! Join the Team Player Revolution! The biggest help is to leave a 5-star rating.
