Dean's Chat hosts Drs. Jeffrey Jensen and Johanna Richey,  welcome Dr. Ronald Ray DPM, who currently practices in Great Falls Montana. Dr. Ray completed his undergraduate degree at California State University at Long Beach with a Bachelors of Science in Physical Therapy. He worked as a Physical Therapist for several years and ultimately became interested in podiatry from his interest in the mechanics of the lower extremity.   Through his work, he explored podiatric medicine and decided to return for his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree obtained from the California College of Podiatric Medicine.  He went on to complete his surgical residency training at one of the top programs in the country at Waldo Podiatric Surgical Residency Program in Seattle Washington (now known as the Swedish residency program). Here he was introduced to many of his mentors. It was through his training he met Dr. Sig Hansen MD with Harborview Medical Center and had the privilege of doing an AO Fellowship with him.   Listen, as we hear his experience of working with Dr. Hanson and the beautiful lessons that he learned watching a master of surgery. Join us as we discuss all things podiatric medicine and surgery as we discuss Dr. Ray's many service opportunities.   Dr. Ray discusses what it means to be involved with professional organizations. As a past president of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery as well as leader in the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (serving on many different committee including: Annual Scientific meeting, Leadership Development Committee and Surgical Skills Committee).  Dr. Ray is no stranger to advancing our profession in the education world. His continued dedication and service are predicated on his passion, which is clear as you hear him speak.  Dr. Ray discusses tricks to elevate speaking in public which our students will surely benefit. Tune in, as he discusses his mentors, Dr. Jeffrey Christensen DPM and Richard Bouche DPM, who helped encourage him to take on lecture opportunities and get engaged in the profession. He provides great wisdom and tips into stretching your comfort zone and being willing to jump in and take the leap into the unknown. His physical therapist framework of learning and developing a skill set-verbalizing, and saying lectures out loud to develop proprioception and muscle memory to improve public speaking are fascinating!  Dr. Ray has been integral in the development of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons collaboration with the AO Foundation to build the curriculum for the Advanced Principles Course for Foot and Ankle Trauma and Surgery. He talks about how this collaborative effort has been a harmonious, but delicate balance of earning trust and maintaining the highest standards to propel our profession forward.   If you are interested in more information about how to join the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons or the AO North America https://www.aofoundation.org/aona/engage-with-us/Become-a-member https://www.acfas.org/membership/joinrenew  To find upcoming AO-ACFAS courses:  https://www.aofoundation.org/aona/our-community/DPM/DPM-courses-and-events#sortCriteria=%40startdate%20ascending&f-speciality=DPM https://www.acfas.org/education-professional-development/educationcalendar

Dean's Chat host, Drs. Jeffrey Jensen and Johanna Richey, are joined by leadership of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, Ms. Kathy Kreiter, CEO, and President, Michelle Butterworth, DPM, FACFAS. Join us for a fun discussion highlinght Board Certification in foot and ankle surgery!   This Dean's Chat episode is sponsored by Bako Diagnostics!   An overview of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS) from their website:  "ABFAS safeguards public health and well-being by certifying and continuously assessing the knowledge, skills, and abilities of podiatric surgeons to ensure excellence in surgical care.  Our Core Purpose is to promote the health and well-being of the public.  Our Values - Excellence: Embracing innovation, continuous improvement, and adaptability. Integrity: Upholding fairness and transparency in all our actions. Quality: Committing to high standards and trustworthiness. Service: Dedicated to serving the profession and the public.  Recognizing the need for a surgical specialty board within the field of podiatry, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) approved the creation of the National Board of Podiatric Surgery. Today, that board is called the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery® (ABFAS).  The primary function of ABFAS is to certify qualified foot and ankle surgeons. Initially, we offered a single certification in foot and ankle surgery. Today, ABFAS offers board certification in foot surgery or foot and reconstructive rearfoot/ankle (RRA) surgery.  Prior to achieving ABFAS Board Certification, candidates must become ABFAS Board Qualified in Foot Surgery or ABFAS Board Qualified in Foot and RRA Surgery. To become ABFAS Board Qualified, DPMs must complete a three-year residency program and pass ABFAS Part I Board Qualification Exams (or the equivalent Final-year In-training Exams). Once board qualified (or "board eligible"), candidates must pass the rigorous Case Review process to achieve ABFAS Board Certification.  ABFAS board-certified surgeons, called ABFAS Diplomates, engage in a process of continuous learning to remain certified through the LEAD Continuous Certification Program."  https://www.abfas.org/about-us https://bakodx.com/ https://bmef.org/ www.explorepodmed.org https://podiatrist2be.com/ https://higherlearninghub.com/

A year and a half ago, Paige Onweller was working as an emergency PA and racing bikes on the side. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, she won Big Sugar. Recognizing that she had a fraction of the racing experience that her competitors had, Paige quit her job, built out her sprinter van, and got to work racing weekend after weekend around the country. She tried everything from time trialing to mountain biking, eventually deciding to commit to gravel and the Grand Prix. At Unbound this year, despite having spent barely any time on the bike since undergoing major ankle surgery, she placed third overall and first in the Grand Prix. Paige sat down with Payson in Bentonville shortly after the race to talk about how her nerdiness and curiosity have helped her go from amateur to top pro within a mere 18 months, the rare ankle injury she suffered during a crash in February that brought her season to a standstill, and how she played to her tactical strengths during Unbound to ensure she would stay at the front despite having almost no training under her belt. They also talk about how groundbreaking the race was for the women's field and how the past four months have taken her to the darkest and brightest places of being a professional athlete. Dean's Chat hosts, Doctors Jeffrey Jensen and Johanna Richey, are joined by a legendary podiatric physician, Dr. Allen Jacobs. Join us for a trip down memory lane in podiatric medicine; from early residency training at Kern/Civic Hospital to opening up hospitals for podiatric privileges in St. Louis, to training residents for 4 decades. Dr. Jacobs is a true icon in our profession! Dr. Jacobs highlights the value of personal interactions in healthcare by sharing stories from his own practice. He recounted instances where simple gestures, such as bringing a patient their favorite breakfast or giving them roses after surgery, made a significant impact on the patient's experience and healing process. These acts of kindness and personalization not only enhanced the patient's satisfaction but also contributed to their overall well-being and recovery. Despite the increasing trend towards corporatization and reliance on AI in healthcare, Dr. Jacobs stressed the irreplaceable role of human connection in patient care. He expressed concerns about the potential loss of personal touch and empathy in modern medicine, where patients may feel like commodities in a system focused on efficiency and automation. Dr. Jacobs emphasized the importance of taking the time to sit down, listen, and engage with patients on a personal level, as these small gestures can have a profound impact on their perception of care and the healing process. Dr. Jacobs is a 1973 Summa Cum Laude graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine. He completed his residency in surgery at Monsignor Clement Kern Hospital for special surgery in Warren, Michigan in 1975. Dr. Jacobs is in private practice in St. Louis, Missouri. He is board-certified in reconstructive surgery of the foot and ankle by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. For 25 years, Dr. Jacobs served as a Director of Podiatric Surgical Residency Training; and has also served as a contributing editor to the Journal of Foot Surgery, Podiatry Today, Foot and Ankle Quarterly, and Clinics in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery. Additionally, Dr. Jacobs has served as the Scientific Chairman of the American Podiatric Medical Association, The Missouri Podiatry Society, and on the Journal Management Committee of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He was the first podiatrist to receive the rank of Fellow by Temple University. Dr. Jacobs was voted a Lifetime Achievement Award and to The Podiatry Hall of Fame. He has received numerous awards from the APMA and ACFAS for his dedication to podiatry and podiatric education, as well as recognition from the governors of Missouri, Arkansas, and Massachusetts.  Dr. Jacobs has published over 80 scientific articles in various publications and 17 chapter contributions in various textbooks and has presented over 1000 papers at podiatric and medical society meetings. He is a nationally recognized author, researcher, and a noted authority of surgery of the foot. Reflecting on the stories and experiences shared by seasoned podiatrists like Dr. Jacobs, helps current and future podiatrists gain insights into the importance of building strong doctor-patient relationships, providing personalized care, and maintaining empathy and compassion in their practice. These historical anecdotes serve as valuable lessons that can guide podiatrists in navigating the evolving healthcare landscape while prioritizing patient-centered care and human connection. https://explorepodmed.org/ Dean's Chat Website Dean's Chat Episodes Dean's Chat Blog Why Podiatric Medicine?  Become a Podiatric Physician https://lelandjaffedpm.com

Join us as we discuss the challenges in resident training and how to build guard rails in our own lives to provide opportunities to safely explore and expand your skill set. As lifelong learners, surgeons rely on support systems to help provide programs and services as well as networks and communities to foster growth. Listen as Dr. Fiala talks about the importance of grit and resilience as well as the importance of hard work, within a balance of maintaining our own mental health.  Self-motivation, hard work, and a willingness to learn are essential attributes for success in the field of podiatry. Dr. Fiala stressed the importance of being self-motivated and putting in continuous effort to grow and excel in the profession. These qualities are highly valued in prospective residents during interviews, indicating their significance in the field. Building relationships, being a team player, and being resilient are essential for residents in the medical field. These attributes not only promote personal growth and development but also enhance patient care and overall success in the healthcare profession. Residents embodying these qualities are better equipped to navigate the challenges of residency training and establish a successful career in medicine. Dr. Jensen and Dr. Fiala also discuss the value of hard work and dedication in residency training and beyond. They emphasize the need to work diligently, study hard, and build strong relationships with colleagues, attendings, and co-residents. This dedication to continuous learning and improvement is crucial for success in podiatry, as ongoing skill development and knowledge enhancement are essential in the field. Dr. Jaffe is board-certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery.  In the episode, Dr. Jaffe discusses the benefits of virtual settings, such as Zoom, for various educational activities. While he acknowledges the challenges of engaging and challenging students in a virtual environment, he emphasizes the advantages of individualized support. For instance, virtual settings are particularly useful for one-on-one tutoring and exam preparation, allowing students to receive personalized assistance when studying or reviewing material.  Additionally, Dr. Jaffe highlights the effectiveness of Zoom in certain courses on campus, specifically for activities like annotating and analyzing medical images such as X-rays and MRIs. By utilizing individual screens, participants can mark up the images and collaborate more efficiently compared to traditional methods involving a shared projector. Overall, Dr. Jaffe recognizes the value of virtual settings in facilitating educational activities that require individual attention or collaborative analysis of visual materials. In the episode, Dr. Jaffe and Dr. Jensen discuss the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of virtual interviews in student recruitment. They note that virtual interviews have become a valuable alternative to in-person interviews, saving time and money. This benefits both prospective students and universities.  Prospective students no longer need to bear the burden of expensive travel expenses, while universities can conduct interviews more efficiently without requiring physical presence. Dr. Jensen mentions that while they encourage students to visit in person to gain a better understanding of the profession and the school, virtual interviews still play a crucial role in the recruitment process. Overall, virtual interviews are seen as a helpful tool in student recruitment, providing convenience and cost savings.   www.lelandjaffedpm.com https://explorepodmed.org/ Dean's Chat Website Dean's Chat Episodes Dean's Chat Blog Why Podiatric Medicine?  Become a Podiatric Physician
