Show notes: On this episode I do an interview with Casey and Melissa Smith, the owners of the art store "Casey's Art Box". The shop is located out in Germantown, TN and combines retail space, gallery wall space, community gathering space, and Casey's art studio space. The dynamic duo are both former educators and have been together since the 1993 Cooper Young Festival. They've been married for almost 30 years. Casey Smith was born in Memphis and raised in Germantown. He has been creating art his whole life. His early years began at Ronnie Grisanti & Sons restaurant where he shared his love of murals. He spent 20 years teaching art to kindergarteners through high school seniors. Now Casey is ready to share his works and hopes to encourage other artists to go after their passion. Melissa Smith moved to Germantown at the beginning of her high school career at GHS. Not one to be far from her family, she attended Memphis State, but ended up graduating from the University of Memphis! While there she met and married Casey, being his number one visual art & music fan and (most importantly) best friend. After 27 years in elementary technology education, she is ready to encourage others to unleash their creative energies. The shop is open Mon-Sat, but are always standing by for any Sunday or after hours art emergencies that might arise! When you stop by be sure to ask about their customer loyalty program. I bought a few paint pens to try out.I also fill you in on some Mid-South Cartoonists Association news, including our upcoming art shows, zine deadline and monthly dinner gathering at Garibaldi's Pizza (April 1st), the MSCA Con Cards, and the Rogue's Gallery moving to Lootz Collectibles in Atoka for Free Comic Book Day.Plus I share some info on Comic Geek Speak's 20th anniversary celebration up in Reading, PA and recent Diamond acquisition by Alliance Entertainment. This week I dropped off a couple of my paintings for upcoming auctions/sales at Playhouse on the Square ("King Arthur/Spamalot") and Germantown Community Theatre ("Annie & Sandy"). Both were done in acrylics on canvas and for previous art shows at GCT. Proceeds to benefit the two theaters. I'll have new art to benefit my wallet at both theaters this year. Thanks to Casey and Melissa for talking toons with me. Hope this episode inspires you to check out their art store and create some art of your own!"Stay Tooned!"LINKS:Drawing Funny Podcast website – www.drawingfunny.comDrawing Funny Podcast on Spotify – www.podcasters.spotify.com/Drawing Funny Podcast on Apple – www.podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/drawing-funny/Mid-South Cartoonists Association/MSCA (Memphis, TN) – www.midsouthcartoonists.orgMy art website – www.linworkman.comCasey's Art Box (Germantown, TN) – www.caseysartbox.com/Garibaldi's Pizza (U of M) – www.garibaldispizza.comLootz Collectibles – www.lootzcollectibles.com/Rogue's Gallery Memphis – www.roguesgallerymemphis.com/Free Comic Book Day – www.freecomicbookday.com/DeSoto Arts Council – www.desotoartscouncil.org/Comic Geek Speak/CGS podcast – www.comicgeekspeak.com/Comic Book Central podcast – www.comicbookcentral.net/Theme: “Silly Bank Heist” music by Steve Oxen. Show notes: On this episode I do a few interviews with some of the Mid-South Cartoonists Association members. I recorded at their March monthly dinner gathering at Garibaldi's Pizza- first I talked with That Katie Jones about The Rogue's Gallery at Centerpoint Toys & Games. and then I caught up with MSCA prez Kevin L. Williams about art goings on around the M-town, including a special "shocking" announcement of a new MSCA art show at Germantown Community Theatre. The MSCA meets at the Garibaldi's U of M location on the first Tuesday of each month from 6-8pm. The next gathering is on Tuesday, April 1st! The meet-ups are free and open to the public, but be sure to bring a few bucks to order off the menu and some art to show around. The following night after work I stopped by 901 Games to discuss Con Cards with the card game's creator (and longtime MSCA and NCS member), Greg Cravens. Greg can be found there on the first Wednesday of the month at 6pm, and can be spotted at many local conventions selling Con Cards and teaching event attendees how to play the game. A new MSCA expansion deck is in the works! In the news section at the end of the episode I fill you in on some S/uper news about our long time friend Mike Norton's new "Krypto The Super-Dog" comic series and his recent Comic Geek Speak podcast appearance on episode 1997. Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton is set to debut on June 18, 2025 from DC Comics.I update you on my recent sketchcard gigs for RRParks Cards, and share some not so super news about me no longer working at 901 Comics. Yep, I was let go just a couple days after these interviews were recorded, so I'll be promoting 901 no more.Oh, speaking of sketchcards, don't forget that I have hand-drawn sketchcards for sale at The Cellar out on Bartlett Blvd. All cards are done in markers and are $35ea. More of my art is for sale at the DeSoto Arts Council in Hernando, MS.In this episode I also include a promo for the Comic Book Central podcast. Ryan had a successful Kickstarter campaign for this new Thrill Comics zombie comic series set in the M-town. I caught up with him out at 901 Comics East for his second signing of the weekend. Show notes: Well, I'm back to basics with this episode of Drawing Funny. This is a bit of a follow up for Episode 40 – “Where Do I Begin?”. After a couple conversations with some new comic creators, I wanted to share some more thoughts on creating comics with you. Trust me, they're very basic, but knowing the basics of creating comic books is something I feel can be often overlooked by those new to writing, drawing, printing, and promoting comics (and themselves). I also have some local MSCA news about upcoming dinner meetings (next one is Tuesday, December 6th), current art shows, and plays around town, as well as some very sad Bat-news about the passing of Kevin Conroy- the iconic voice of Batman for 30yrs. Plus I send out some congrats to Joe Stuber on his Comic Book Central podcast's 9th Anniversary! I hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving. Stay safe, stay tooned, and keep drawing funny! "The Deep Freeze" April 23, 1977 Mr. Freeze returns to chill in Gotham and he has a plan where he wants to take advantage of a new freeze weapon. John and Joe Stuber of Comic Book Central are back in the Batcave talking about an episode that is much better than it has the right to be, considering how Filmation handled Mr. Freeze in the past. In it, they discuss how Mr. Freeze seems more like the Batman 66 character rather than the Filmation 68 one, how the cold puns were just the right amount and how Michael Uslan lands on Batmite. "He Who Laughs Last" April 16, 1977 The Joker is back in Gotham City and he's bent on revenge on Batman for putting him away previously. John and Joe Stuber of Comic Book Central are back in the Batcave talking about an episode that ticks all the boxes when it comes to Filmation Batman 1977. In it, they discuss how this story seems more like a Riddler story, muse about Batman leaving Batgirl alone in the Batcave, and wonder how a Joker plane looks more like a helicopter. Let us know what you're thinking as you listen to the episode by commenting here or by writing us at thebatcavepodcast@gmail.com.
"The Chameleon" April 9, 1977 The Chameleon is in Gotham City, looking for revenge against Batman. They also discuss the joys of introducing new villains to the Batman universe through vehicles such as this. Show Notes: If you're wondering about the title for this episode, the Memphis and Southaven area near me are getting some new Whataburger locations, so I thought I'd play off that and discuss what tools and materials I use for producing my art. I'll be discussing my early days of airbrushing in malls in the '80s, literally cutting and pasting art, starting off on working digital, creating early webcomics in the '90s, my sculpting experiences, how I got into using markers, and some other ways I like to get the job done. Plus I send out some congrats to fellow podperson Joe Stuber for Comic Book Central's 400th episode/8th anniversary, and give you some info on former guest Sal Abbinanti's new Kickstarter campaign for his "Atomika" omnibus. BTW: If after listening to this episode and still have art questions or have suggestions on what types of tools and materials you use, or would like to come on the show to discuss your techniques and/or just talk toons, please give me a shout. In this episode, we are honored to chat with Shannon Farnon, an accomplished actress and voiceover artist. Most fans remember her as the voice of Wonder Woman on "The Superfriends", a part she played for 10 years. She is a charming woman, and lovely inside and out. We know that you will enjoy our chat with this fantastic lady! Shannon starred in film, television, commercials and cartoons, however her first role was in 1965 in an uncredited role on Burke's Law. She went on to appear in multiple other television series, but was most active in commercials. While playing a mother in a live-action commercial in 1973 for Flintstone vitamins she was approached by voice director Wally Burr to audition for what was to be her most long-running famous role, Wonder Woman on Super Friends. From 1973 to 1983, Farnon voiced the Amazonian superheroine on Super Friends, Challenge of the Super Friends, The All-New Super Friends Hour, The World's Greatest Super Friends and the revival of Super Friends. Farnon did voice several incidental characters, such as Lois Lane and Hawkgirl on some of the series and also played Kim Butler in Valley of the Dinosaurs in 1974, but mainly she did the voice of Wonder Woman. She voiced Wonder Woman on many Cartoon Network promos and went on to appear in several films and television series, but since 2005, her acting appearances have been infrequent. She has voiced various commercials, including Betty Crocker, Nivea, Kodak, National World War II Memorial, Oil of Olay, Scotchgard and Cartoon Network spoofs of The Super Friends.
