You never know what's going to drive you to the brink....On this episode we dive into the complex areas of obsession and even Men's mental health with 'Sharp Corner'.Josh (Ben Foster) is increasingly consumed by the fatal car crashes in front of his house. As Josh's obsession takes hold, he begins to spiral, placing his wife and son in jeopardy and setting in motion a series of events that threaten to permanently break the family apart.'Sharp Corner' is a shocking reminder of the psychological labyrinth's that are around all of our corners each and every day. Co-Writer/Director Jason Buxton manages to take us into an emotional maelstrom that quietly and rather powerfully walks us to the edge of a life on the brink of falling apart.Buxton and his team crafted a truly fantastic set piece and we had the please of sitting down with him before the release to talk about the origins of the story, getting his ensemble on the same page and so very much more....

“Whedon at the line….oh, no, another brick!” - Steve, on the screenplay clunkers On this week's episode, the 2025 Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza kicks off with a trip to Franchise Town as we discuss the fun, Spader-tastic sequel, Avengers: Age of Ultron! How great is James Spader with this Ultron performance? Are there too many characters in this fully-loaded movie? Should they have written mutant characters when they couldn't use the word ‘mutant' anywhere in the script? And would Ultron have been more menacing if he was given a big, mechanical mustache? PLUS: What in the world is going on with the Maximoffs' accents here? Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Don Cheadle, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Cobie Smulders, Anthony Mackie, Hayley Atwell, Idris Elba, Linda Cardellini, Stellan Skarsgård, Claudia Kim, Thomas Kretschman, Andy Serkis, and James Spader as Ultron; directed by noted jerk, Joss Whedon. This week Brian Mix stops by to catch up on his recent barnstorming tour across the country. The who, what, where and when of the events and conventions he hit leave the other Joes seriously jealous of Brian's “retirement.” Barry and Dave also attended a con , yes just one. But, based on their report, TerrificCon sounds … well, terrific. If you doubt this we need only say two words, “Cobie Smulders.” And of could, there's also a pretty extensive run down of Random topics. Thanks for listening!

Minute One Hundred Thirty Four: From A Big A to Iron Man's PalmAndrew Darowski from Disney Animation Minute Essentials and Joe Darowski from the Protagonist Podcast join us in this episode! In the one-hundred-thirty-fourth minute of The Avengers...We finish pulling out of the broken windows at Stark Tower, finding just the A left in the STARK signage out here. We also get a small WHOOSH right when we pass the A, as if to tell us that it's something we need to notice. We talk about ideas like this, who decides them, and how they end up in here. We finish our chat about Tony and Pepper and whatever it is they're doing with their hologram of the building blueprint. Did you notice the quinjet in it? It's pretty cool. As promised, today is our conversation looking at the alternate ending with Maria Hill closing out her questioning by the World Security Council. It's a bit awkward and way too long. While it gives us the rest of the bit of Hill that we've been enjoying develop since those opening moments and would've been great to give that extra bit of character development to Cobie Smulders, it really does feel unnecessary in the end. But maybe that's because it's so long and has such clunky dialogue. And we're done! It's time for credits. Andrew says his kids call this section the ‘special credits,' so we'll adopt that from them. We briefly discuss some of the team here that's new to the MCU, but largely we talk about the art that comes with these special credits. Why is Cap so dominant throughout, to the point where we're getting the buckle on the back of his shield and his torn and damaged shoulder of his costume featured? Black Widow's only featured once? Some of the items are cool to look at, but it's a strange set of choices they used as the featured elements from our heroes. Not to mention Iron Man takes forever to show up and Hulk doesn't even appear by the time this minute ends. What gives? It's all interesting and worth thinking about. Tune in as pod friend Guy Bradford comes back to the show for a review and recap of Secret Invasion, the first Disney+ MCU series of 2023. The show's horrible and lifeless AI-created opening credits, MCU fatigue, Guy mixing up Nic Cage and Nick Fury's names numerous times, and the apparently gut-wrenching film that is Requiem for a Dream (which remains on Arthur's watchlist) comprise just a few of this episode's talking points. As a spy story involving the shape-shifting Skrulls, Secret Invasion always presented itself as a twisty adventure in which nothing is what it seems. So while some people were certainly shocked when the first episode of the series ended with the death of Maria Hill, others assumed that the scene would echo CIA Agent Everett K. Ross's death during the cold open. She would be revealed to be a Skrull and the real Maria Hill would return, probably to save Nick Fury in an exciting set piece. But the real Maria Hill has arrived to disabuse us of those hopes. Speaking with Vanity Fair, Hill's actor Cobie Smulders weighed in on her character's fate with some disappointing news for anyone writing the above headcanon. “Maria Hill's passing is very real, and it's shocking, and it feels very human,” Smulders explained. That last word carries particular weight, given the possibility of Skrulls masquerading throughout the story. But for Smulders, the human aspect presented a unique challenge for her as an actor. “It was a sad day,” she admits, while also acknowledging the opportunity to stretch some new performance muscles. “I don't think I've ever died on camera,” she enthused. “I got a real death scene!”

Fans of the Marvel Universe, "How I Met Your Mother" and Canada rejoice because this week we are joined by actress and all-around great person, Cobie Smulders! On this episode of the podcast, Vanessa discusses why one of the greatest nights of her life was spent watching THE BODYGUARD at Cobie and Taran's house, Cobie gives us the sweet details about the Tom Cruise holiday cake and Jonah recalls his teenage fascination with Steven Seagal. Even though Cobie grew up without cable television in a rural part of the Canadian outback, she did have access to a little show called SAVED BY THE BELL and we discuss how it informed Cobie's perception of the United States and teenage life in general. To bring things full circle, Cobie also recounts the time that she met Mark-Paul Gosselaar as an adult... and had a very different experience than Vanessa did. Finally we play a powerful round of CHANGE DOT DORK where we review petitions about a "How I Met Your Mother" reunion, bringing back chicken noodle soup at Tim Horton's and, finally, the three of us try to give a definitive answer of the age-old question: Is lasagna technically cake? Taran Killam (SNL, Killing Gunther) joins us this week to share his opinion on attention and rejection as an actor with a unique perspective of having been cast in two iconic sketch shows: Mad TV and SNL. Love the honesty in this episode… Taran shares some pretty uncomfortable moments with heroes like Jack Black and Dave Grohl, while also being open about how he rekindled his relationship with his now wife, Cobie Smulders. We also talk about his audition for Pete in Smallville, who made him crack the most on both Mad TV and SNL, and what it was like to work with Arnold Schwarzenegger on his self directed film. Cobie Smulders is an actress who is known for her role as Robin Scherbatsky in the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. She's also starred in many movies, including her role as agent Maria Hill in Marvel movies. She also knows a thing or two about resilience. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at age 25. She underwent multiple surgeries while starring in How I Met Your Mother and did not make her diagnosis public until several years later. Now, she's teamed up with Colgate because she wants kids to learn skills that can help them be resilient. She's concerned about the mental health health of young people following the pandemic, and she's launched a campaign to ensure young people are learning the skills they need to thrive during uncertain times. Some of the things she talks about today are why hope is such an important part of resilience, how nature improves her mental health, and why she apologizes to her kids (even though her parents never apologized to her).
Our first topic for 2005 is the classic sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Brad chose this after watching the whole series as it was aired, and then after reliving its brilliance on a second watch a year ago. We break down a couple of the early episodes, including the pilot, but we get into much more. Giff is also a huge fan, and now Pete is on his way as well. In addition to our discussion of the show, we each also share our top 5 sitcoms of all-time. Does HIMYM make the cut? Does your favorite show match up with one of us?
