The Marvel Cinematic Universe gets a fresh jolt of paranoia and political intrigue with "Captain America: Brave New World," a thriller that sees Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) trying to define his place as the new Cap while dealing with international chaos, rogue superhumans, and some very questionable allies. Directed by Julius Onah, the film doesn't just bring back some familiar faces—it makes them part of a tangled political mess of past sins and present-day power plays. Tim Blake Nelson's Leader resurfaces with a grudge, Carl Lumbly's Isaiah Bradley adds emotional weight, and oh yeah, Harrison Ford steps into the formidable shoes of Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, who may or may not be hiding a very big, very angry, very red secret. READ MORE: ‘Captain America: Brave New World' Review: Sam Wilson's Heart, Grit & Determination Trump Superpowers In Marvel's New Conspiracy ThrillerDirector Julius Onah joins The Discourse to talk about all of the spoilery details on Marvel's latest, including what he thinks won him the role of director. In his pitch, Onah sought to explore a more grounded and cerebral take on what it means to be Cap in a world that isn't sure it needs one. "It was about a point of view more so than anything," Onah explained about pitching the film to Marvel. "They were familiar with my last film, a small indie film called 'Luce,' and I first had just a general conversation with Nate Moore and Kiana Davidson at Marvel. We talked again, more generally, about theme tone and character. And, for me, it was sort of a gut check moment of like, you're going to go down the road with people. Are these people that you would even just love to have a conversation with about movies?"

We're now up to the 35th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and that movie is “Captain America: Brave New World.” At the end of “Avengers: Endgame”, the OG Captain America, Steve Rogers, gave Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) the Captain America shield. Sam, had been Falcon up until that point, starting in the movies with “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” After, the “Falcon And The Winter Soldier” Marvel TV series, the Sam Wilson version of Captain America is in his own movie. Captain America is tasked with making sure that some bad characters don't get their hands on some adamantium retrieved from the Celestial Being, seen in “Eternals.” It's crucial because if it's lost, it threatens dismantling a peace deal that President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross is trying to strike with countries, all who want to harvest materials from the Celestial Being. This triggers a chain of events which include an assassination attempt on President Ross, the discovery of a secret lab with clues of nefarious activity and the appearance of Red Hulk. Is this movie worth checking out at the theater? Watch this episode to find out! “Captain America: Brave New World” also stars Danny Ramirez, Carl Lumbly, Shira Haas, Tim Blake Nelson, Giancarlo Esposito, Xosha Roquemore, Johannes Haukur Johannesson, William Mark McCullough, Takehiro Hara and Harsh Nayyar. Captain America: Brave New World marks the beginning of the second half of The Multiverse Saga. This installment weaves long-dangling threads from 2008's Incredible Hulk, events from Captain America: Civil War, and a world-shifting revelation from Eternals into an action-forward political thriller. In keeping with early Captain America storylines, Brave New World blends its “state of the sociopolitical landscape” level-set into a plot driven by high-stakes mission and a changing of the political guard. If you're coming into Captain America: Brave New World off of a (re)watch of The Falcon and the Winter Solider series, temper those expectations. In director Julius Onah's (Luce) film, Wilson may no longer be conflicted about assuming the mantle of Captain America; but he is wrestling with his role in the US military industrial complex, the pressure to be an unassailable Black hero, and taking repeated hits to his sense of self in an anti-Black system. It's a subtle (often too subtle), but intentional, schism at play throughout the entire movie. But it pays to remember, Sam Wilson's tenure as Captain America has just begun. This is not the moment he shakes off the fetters of respectability. Just like in the comics, Wilson's path forward is a more measured and pragmatic approach to combating inequity and defending against evil; seeming to operate within the realm of current reality rather than aggressively rejecting and dismantling oppressive ideologies and their attendant institutions. As a veteran and counselor (who specialized in helping other veterans suffering from PTSD) he openly advocated for the necessity of harm mitigation while carving out sustainable solutions. He still believes that despite the obstacles and judgment that we (society) can do better. Think John Lewis, not Stokely Carmichael. And that fact alone will be reason enough for some viewers to bounce off Brave New World. On this episode, Matt & Eric review Captain America: Brave New World starring Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, Xosha Roquemore, Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson, and Harrison Ford.
The first MCU movie of the year - Captain America: Brave New World - is now out in theaters. Honestly, I've been shockingly not excited for this movie. As much as I love Sam Wilson and I did enjoy Falcon and Winter Soldier more than most people, the behind the scenes drama on this movie and the creative team announced just kept killing my excitement as we got closer to release. I've liked the tone of the trailers but all we heard from behind the curtains weren't spelling good news for this movie at all. Of course though, I went in really wanting this movie to be good; the only reason this podcast even came to be in the first place is because of my love for the MCU and Steve Rogers has always been my favorite character in the franchise. The movie has now released worldwide. Does Captain America: Brave New World continue a winning streak for Marvel after Deadpool & Wolverine... or are we going to have to wait for Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four (two MCU movies I AM excited about) to get the good stuff? This is our interview with Julius Onah, director of Captain America: Brave New World, and Giancarlo Esposito, who plays Seth Voelker (Sidewinder) in the film. With Onah, we discuss the creative decisions behind balancing the grounded storytelling of past Captain America films with larger-than-life elements, such as a Celestial island and the Red Hulk. With Esposito, we explore what drew him to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and how he approaches playing a villain like Seth Voelker with a physicality and confidence that set him apart from his previous villainous roles.Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World hits theaters on February 14, 2025.Check out our interview with Giancarlo Esposito on YouTube HereCheck out our interview with Director Julius Onah on YouTube Here Check out Geekcentric onYouTube | Instagram | Twitter | TikTokJoin the Geekcentric Discord HERE
The next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is here and so is comic book expert Erik Laws to talk with Erik Childress on how it plays out. Does it follow through on some of the ideas raised by The Falcon and the Winter Soldier or is it merely just continuing a story most many have forgotten about? Laws fills in the blanks left by the treatment of Shira Haas' Widow and the remnants of the Serpent Society. Is this a genuine new beginning for the Universe or does it continue the rut that has befallen the MCU since Endgame.

Welcome Dr. Linda Thornton to The Mark Howley Show! Tune in today for this inspiring TRUE story! Dr. Thornton is the first female trained black prosthodontist (aka she is an expert in dentures) and a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army Dental Corps. She grew up in a poor family in New Jersey as the youngest of five girls. Her father was determined to educate his daughters and support them in becoming doctors. Their story feels oddly similar to the infamous tennis athletes of the Williams sisters. To raise funds for college, the family started a band The Thornton Sisters which became so successful they sang alongside The Supremes. Her father worked many jobs like ditch digging that led to many of the connections landing them gigs in prestigious universities. Her mother did all the costume creation and managed the entire family while working. All five of the sisters indeed became physicians and their story inspired a book, The Ditchdigger's Daughters later turned into a movie starring Carl Lumbly who was cast as their father. They appeared on the Oprah show as a result of their fame as their story gained more traction. Dr. Thornton is currently on the staff of Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) where she is in the process of starting a business DanTass (named after her parents) to help students through the expensive process of becoming a doctor. Her joy for life, her passion for dentistry and incredible personality captivated us from the beginning. Tune in today for this inspiring TRUE story.
